Part 360s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1832 James Smith, Benjamin and Sophia Ventour

16 September 2010

Afternoon,

And here’s a simple recipe. I’m doing it again but the combinations are endless, that is except for the cabbage, eggs, and flour. It was Okonomiyaki, the dreaded word, but a fantastic and quick meal… Japanese pancake for supper. Okonomi means “what you like” or “what you want” and yaki means “grilled” or “cooked”. And of course there are variations – modanyaki and negiyaki. I can almost guarantee that you’ll like it.

Oh and by the way if you’re asking what the hell is Smith doing posting about Japanese food in with his Grenada genealogy, it’s simple. I like food. I like food, and just to throw in a twist in my genealogy and ancestry search I am aware of a gg-granduncle who was a merchant in Japan and married a Japanese lady. He was a brother to my gg-grandfather Benjamin Victor Abraham who lived in London, England, and British Guiana. Maybe one day I can add a small knowledge of the Japanese language to pursue my Japanese connections and distant cousins.

Back to my search and research for the origins and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. Following Part 359s I promised to present my work and transcription of the second part, Schedule (B) of the Indenture from the Grenada Registers of Records.

Within the body of this Record and Document there are 11 references each to the surname Smith and the name James. As this James Smith occupation, in 1832, is identified as “Carpenter” and the fact that there is reference to one Sophia, wife of Benjamin Ventour, I can logically accept that this is definitely ggg-grandfather James. But sorry to say that is as far as it goes. There are no, from what I can read or see, any additional clues as to the ancestry or origins of ggg-grandfather James.

Here are the images, Pages 161 through and including 170 from Item 9 of the microfilm FHL [1563329] of the Grenada Registers of Records.

And here is my lengthy transcription.

And my apologies for the wrapping in my transcription. It appears the the Writing Clerk, possibly James R Hill, was extremely frugal with the sizing of and the use of ink on each of the Document's lines.

There is a Schedule (C) which follows. It is my next work.

Enjoy,
