Good Day,

Today I have relocated, in my genealogy research, to South Leith, Scotland. And adding to my library, I have been able to pick up a copy of Sue Mowat's 1994 "The Port of Leith".


Using Scotlands People and Family Search, I have been able to get a copy of the 1754 Baptism Registration of GGGG-Grandfather James Scott.

And this Baptism Registration introduces me to my 5-times Great-Grandparents William Scott and Margaret Straiton.

Part 943rs - The Search For GGGG-Grandmother Ann (née Reid) Scott

Good Day,

I am now at a point in my research of my Scott Family line where I need to figure out who and how are GGGG-Grandfather's parents, my 5-times Great-Grandparents. The possibilities are William Scott and Margaret Sraiton, and, George Reid and Sarah Laurie.

Here are a couple of facts and thoughts that I have collected that, hopefully, should point to some answers.

1. GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott were married 9 April 1784 in Leith, Scotland. See Part 942sr - 1784 Marriage Registration - GGGG-Grandfather James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

2. GGGG-Grandmother Ann Reid's father is confirmed as "Mr. George Reid Farmer in Ratho" on her 1784 Marriage Registration.

2. GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann Scott had 11 children. I am currently in the process of searching for all baptism registrations.

3. The 1st 4 of the listed 11 children of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann are named after their Grandparents, my GGGGG-Grandparents William Scott and Margaret Sraiton, and, George Reid and Sarah Laurie. The 1st 4 names are: William, Sarah, Margaret, and George.

4. From findmypast "Search Scottish Records".

"The Scots have for many centuries followed a relatively simple set of rules when assigning given names to their successive children. While these traditional naming patters were not followed by all families, they were widespread enough that a basic understanding of them can come in handy when hunting for Scottish ancestors.

Being familiar with these patterns will allow you to make genealogical inferences, identify potential new avenues of research and reveal all sorts of clues about the lives of your ancestors.

By the latter part of the nineteenth century, these patterns began to break down and fade out of use so be cautious when using them to identify more recent ancestors.

The traditional patterns used when naming boys were as follows:

• The first son would be named after the father's father (variation is after the mother's father)
• The second after the mother's father (variation is the father's father)
• The third son would be named after the father
• The fourth son would be named after the father's oldest brother (variation is after the father's paternal grandfather)
• The fifth son would be named after the mother's oldest brother (variation is after the mother's paternal grandfather)

and for girls:

• First daughter named after the mother's mother (variation is after the father's mother
• Second daughter named after the father's mother
• Third daughter named after the mother
• Fourth daughter named after the mother's oldest sister (variation is after the mother's maternal grandmother)
• Fifth daughter named after the father's oldest sister (variation is after the father's maternal grandmother)"

Part 942sr - 1784 Marriage Registration - GGGG-Grandfather James and Ann (née Reid) Scott

Good Day,

Following the discovery of the 1802 Baptism Registration, (see Part 941ss), and as the Registration identified GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott's parents as James Scott and Ann Reid, my next step is to seek out a possible Marriage Registration. All-things-being-equal James Scott and Ann Reid would have been my GGGG-Great-Grandparents.

I have discovered that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott may have been the youngest of  the 11 children of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

And next, the 1784 Marriage Registration of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

And as far as coincidences go, I noted that GGGG-Grandfather James Scott is listed as a "Wright in Leith".  "The noun "wright" is an Old English word, and it always refers to a person who builds, creates, or repairs something (as in playwright or shipwright).  A Wright: a skilled craftsman.

In my research in Part 512s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – GGG-Grandfather James Smith’s Noted Occupations, I observed that GGG-Grandfather James Smith also at points of time in his life is recorded as having been a Wright.

Good Day,

I am continuing the search and confirmation of my Scott Family line.  I have now traveled from Kingston, Jamaica to Leith, Scotland. Thanks to TK, KM, and AS for their assistance and review.

Today I have the 12 April 1802 Baptism Registration of GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott. The Baptism Registration confirms GGGG-Grandparents James Scott and Anne Reid.

"In this parish are 5142 heads of families, 2439 male child, 2432 female child, 484 male servants, 935 female servants, in all 11432 individuals, and 2893 families. 432 individuals reside in Restalrig, 557 in Abbeyhill and 1497 in Calton of Edinburgh."

Part 940sh - GGG-Grandmother Eliza Hall

Good day,

I’ve begun a journey in the search of information regarding my GGG-Grandmother Eliza Hall. She and GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott were the parents of my GG-Grandfather, the Reverend Alexander Scott.

I have found a Baptism Registration for one Eliza Hall whose parents were Ann Bishe and Harry (aka Henry) J. Hall. Eliza Hall’s baptism occurred in Kingston, Jamaica on 17 March 1804. Included in the registration is her birth date of 30 June 1802.

As GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott’s birth date is recorded as 16 March 1802 on his Baptism Registration dated 12 April 1802, it is safe to say that these two individuals were pretty close in age.

GG-Grandfather, the Reverend Alexander Scott’s Baptism Registration dated 30 July 1833 indicates his birth date as 17 August 1830 in the Parish of St. Andrew, County of Surrey, in Jamaica. His parents are entered as “Alex Reid Scott & Eliza Hall”. In most cases, if the parents are married, the entry could have read as “Alex Reid Scott & Eliza his wife”. This is not a fast rule, but it is something to think about.

In 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott married Eliza Miller. See Part 939ss - 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott Marries Eliza Miller.

Here's some food for thought, and for your ideas.

1. Eliza Hall, according to the required Slave Ownership Accounting instituted between 1812 and 1834, owned slaves.

2. The 1829 Accounting form, Eliza Hall's signature is witnessed by H. I. Hall.

3. The 1832 Accounting form, Eliza Hall's signature is witnessed by Alex R. Scott.

4. 1804 Baptism Registration for Eliza, her parents Henry/Harry i/J Hall and Anne Bishe. Her birth 1802. See 1st document above.

5. 1833 Baptism Registration for GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott, parents Alexander Reid Scott and Eliza Hall. See Part 932ss – 1833 Baptism GG-Grandfather Reverend Alexander S. M. Scott.

Part 939ss - 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott Marries Eliza Miller

Good day,

At long last!

I have found a good source for the 1846 Marriage of GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott to Eliza Miller.

Transcription -

"JULY 8 - BURY AND NORWICH POST, AND EAST ANGLIAN - 1846
MARRIED
Same day, at Lyston, Essex, by the Rev. J. I. Worship,
Alexander Reid Scott, Esq., of Kingston, Jamaica, to
Eliza, only daughter of the late Alexander Miller, Esq,
of the same place."

The "same day" refers to the previous Marriage Registration and the time frame of "On Tuesday last".  Calculating that from the date of the Bury and Norwich Post, and East Anglian, 8 July 1846, I would say that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott's and Eliza Miller`s marriage happened on 7 July 1846.

There is an issue that their 1846 Marriage was registered in Sudbury, Suffolk, England in the 2nd Quarter. According to the Post it took place, from my interpretation on July 7, which is in the 3rd Quarter. Note also, the difference between the two Counties of Essex and Suffolk. Liston, Essex is less than 3 miles north of Sudbury.

Also, something should be noted, that today Lyston is spelled as Liston in Essex.

We have found the Marriages Registered in April, May, June 1846.
