Part 893s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – GGG-Grandfather James Smith – The Continued Search

Good Day,

I'm back.

The search never, ever ends. I am still looking for the possible origin of my 3-times great grandfather James Smith.

In the past couple of weeks my cousin made a fantastic discovery. It was a letter penned by a great-aunt to his mother. The discovery is a possible measure of luck which may or may not provide a clue to the search of the origins of our great-great-great-grandfather James Smith. The last sentence of the note/letter is what has definitely piqued our interest.

As transcribed, (thank-you David) –

“Your great grandmother (Ella) Granny Smiths was born in Eng. (York I think) he was an Anglican priest; Rev Alexander Scott- he married Sarah Ann Roseta McKowen, whose father was an Irish D; Mckowen-Mrs. Mckowen was the daughter of a Mrs. McEwen they came from Aberdeen Scotland. Granny Smiths; father & mother went to Nassau when they married. Their children were born there. They then went to Jamaica, where grandfather Scott died & Gran Scott came back to Grenada with 3 children. Ella, Hubert & Percy. Ella (your gran) Hubert lived in Trinidad and died there & Percy died at the age of 92 and is buried here. Ella my mother, & your Gran (Scott) married William James Smith my father whose Grandfather came from Glasgow.”

It is great-aunt Olive’s last sentence

“Ella my mother, & your Gran (Scott) married William James Smith my father whose Grandfather came from Glasgow.”

that provided me with the impetus and motivation to check another path of research.

From my previous research and write-up, Part 347s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1842 James Smith – LWT – Distribution ggg-grandfather James Smith in his last will and testament mentions his sister Betsy (née Smith) La Grenade two times.

Given this fact, ggg-grandfather James had a sister Betsy, and that grandaunt Olive mentions that her father, my great-grandfather William James Smith’s grandfather came from Glasgow, I thought that I may search the FHL Scottish Parish Records for the birth and/or christening records of a brother and a sister born in the area of Glasgow. I increased my search to include the county of Lanarkshire as on older maps Glasgow is found within the area pre-1975. As ggg-grandfather James passed away in Grenada in about 1843 I set the range of my search for the siblings’ records to 1760 through 1800.

These are the parameters of my search –

1. The years 1760 – 1800, first pass.
2. All birth and christening (baptism) records as indexed in the Scottish Parish Records LDS database.
3. All birth and christening records specific to the county of Lanark.
4. All birth and christening records record for a male child named James.
5. All birth and christening records record for a female child named Elizabeth, Elisabeth, Betty and other variations. I did not find a record for the spelling of Betsy. (I did find a site which very nicely charts out names that may be related to that of Elizabeth – Behind the Name ).

To date I have found 72 Elizabeth, et al, records and 146 James records. Now the matching to same/mutual parents begins, if possible.

Part 403s – Smith Robertson – Indenture Research – 1817 Smith Plus Smith Plus Smith… Plus Smith – Is This GGG-Grandfather James Smith?

Afternoon,

The scribe of these next few pages of an Indenture of the Grenada Registers of Records has certainly given my pair of eyes a most definite “squint-and-blurred” exercise. All-things-being-equal ggg-grandfather James Smith and his possible brother-in-law Louis La Grenade may have been mentioned in this next document.

The Smiths, that is the prime Smiths mentioned in this next document, more than likely are of the Smith Family which I have given the labeling the “Jordan Hill Smiths”. This is the first time that I have actually found any type of reference made, to him who I think was my ggg-grandfather James Smith, included with the Smith Family, that I have labeled the Jordan Hill Smiths.

On Page 246 of this Indenture reference is made to the “Me∫sieurs Smith and La Grenade”. These two gentlemen could possibly be ggg-grandfather James Smith and his brother-in-law Mr. La Grenade, (possibly Louis La Grenade) who may have been the husband to ggg-grandfather James' purported sister, ggg-grandaunt Betsey (née Smith) La Grenade. See Part 88s and Part 61s as cross-references.

The reading in this Indenture comes pretty damn close at either verifying or assuming that the Smith threesome; Archibald, James, and James, Junior Smith could be in somehow related to the Smith of “on the North by Lands….” Is this another piece to the puzzle? Is this unidentified Smith ggg-grandfather James Smith? And are there any familial ties to Archibald, James, and James, Junior Smith. (See my Smiths of Jordanhill, Scotland Chart.)

There is a slight possibility that the “Smith and la Grenada” mentioned on Page 246 of this document could be ggg-grandfather James Smith and the husband of ggg-grandaunt Betsey (née Smith ) La Grenade. At this time this is all I can offer and present from this latest document and work.

Part 88s – Smith Records – 1815 GG-Grandfather James Smith

Morning again,

And following on the heels of his older sister, gg-grandaunt Eley Smith, I was to locate in the same Parish Register of St. George the baptism entry for great-great-grandfather James Smith. From the microfilm FHL[1523656], Anglican Church Parish Records, 1784-1971.

You know this genealogy thing at times can be really strange. I know my name is Jim, James Smith, and before I started this lifetime project I never knew that I had two grandfathers also named James; ggg- and gg-grandfathers James. But my name James is not of a family tradition, that is, of naming the eldest son of the eldest son. I was named for my uncle James Robertson, my mother's Brother Jimmy. (See my posting on May 25, 2009.) The discovery of my two grandfathers, with the same name, albeit the most common name in the English language, ties me to both lines of my ancestry; Smith and Robertson.

Examining the baptismal entry for gg-grandfather James and with today's PC software tools available, I have been able to clean the page up somewhat.

As you can see from the age of the original document, from 1815, 194 years ago, the page which was microfilmed is in good condition. From the newer softwares, and using a gamma function, allows me to reduce the amount of visible bleeding from the back page which was a part of the actual filmed copy. A contrast function then helps me to highlight the part of the document that I want to read and transcribe.

If you compare this baptism entry to the one made in 1814 for gg-grandaunt Eley Smith, you'll notice that gg-grandmother Mary Ann's name is entered somewhat differently. ( See Part 87s.) In 1814, it is Mary Ann Doret, and in the above one of 1815 it is what appears to be Mary Anne Doral. In both cases the person who made the entries appears to be the same, Francis McMahon.

A new question comes to mind regarding the two of the names of the sponsors: Louis Grenade and Elizabeth Grenade. Based on the discovery of the name of "my Sister Betsey La Grenade" as written in ggg-grandfather James' Last Will and Testament, entered 21 February 1843, (see Part 61s), and the possibility that "Betsey" could be a diminutive form of Elizabeth, could this Elizabeth Grenade be gg-grandfather James' aunt and his father's sister? And then the next question… Is the sponsor Louis Grenade her husband? Something to think about…

The document that I am transcribing today is the Last Will and Testament of ggg-grandfather James Smith. It is dated 15 February 1843 and entered 21 February 1843. I've updated the James Smith Descendant Chart as follows:

In the name of God Amen I James Smith of Good
Hope in the parish of Saint George in the Island of Grenada Esquire being
of sound mind memory and undertaking but mindful of the uncertainty of
human life do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form
following that is to say I desire that all my just debts and funeral and testa-
mentary expenses may be paid as soon after my decease as may be convenient by
my Executors hereinafter named and I hereby direct that that? the fund not of
which the same shall be paid shall (if sufficient) be any sums due to me from
any debtors, as well as any sums of money which shall be at my Credit in the
Books of the West India Bank in this Island at the time of my decease I give
devise and bequeath unto my dear wife Mary Ann Smith All that my Estate

Trustees Benjamin Ventour James Smith and Alexander Bain whom I also
nominate constitute and appoint Executors of this my last Will and Testament
do employ any rest residue or remainder of the rents to be received from the said
House in keeping the same in repairs or in the improvement thereof at the
discretion of my said Trustees. And from and after the decease of my said
son Thomas Smith and my Sister Betsey La Grenade I give devise and bequeath
the said Messuage or Tenement lot piece or parcel of land unto the Children of
my daughter Mary Steele by her present Marriage as shall be living at the
time of either of the above events happening their heirs and assignes equally share
and share alike as tenants in common and not as joint tenants. I give
devise and bequeath to my Grand daughter Madelaine Ventour One half of the
Shares which I possess in the Capital Stock of the West India Bank and
the remaining half thereof I give and bequeath to Louis La Grenade Esqr. I give
and bequeath to Benjamin Ventour my Gold Watch Chain and Seals. I give
and bequeath unto my friend Alexander Couper his choice of one of my
Milch Cows at Good Hope. I give and bequeath unto Alexander Bain the
Clothes Press which I have in the Town of Saint George and my copy of the
Encyclopedia Britannica contained in Twenty Volumes. And I do hereby revoke
all former and other Wills be me at any time heretofore made and declare
this to be my last Will and testament. In Witness whereof I the said Testator
James Smith have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and
seal the ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and forty two.

of Saint George in the Island of Grenada Planter who being duly
Sworn made Other that he was present together with John Louis
Alexander St. Bernard and James St. Bernard and did see James

Smith the Testator within named duly sign seal execute and deliver the
within written Will and at the same time did hear the said Testator publish
and declare the same as and for his last Will and Testament and that
the name or signature "Js. Smith" set and subscribed opposite the seal
at foot of the said Will is the proper handwriting of the said Testator James
Smith. And this deponent further saith that in testimony of such due execution
thereof as aforesaid they this deponent and the said John Louis Alexander St.
Bernard and James St. Bernard did at the request of the said Testator in his
presence and in the presence of each other severally subscribe their names as
witnesses thereto and that the names or signatures "J.A. St. Bernard" "John
Ls. A. St. Bernard" and "James St. Bernard" set and subscribed to the attestation
written at foot of the said Will are the respective proper handwriting of this
deponent and the said John Louis Alexander St. Bernard and James St. Bernard
And lastly this deponent saith that at the time the said Testator so signed
sealed published and declared the said within written Will as and for his
las Will and Testament as aforesaid he was to the best of this deponent's
Judgment and belief of sound mind memory and understanding.

Please note that I have attempted to add and make notation to as many of the individuals in the Descendant Chart that are made mention of in ggg-grandfather James' Will. There are a few that I have not included either due to my immediate understanding of their relationship to ggg-grandfather James or for the issue of space in the presentation.

I have not included his granddaughter "Mary Smith the reputed daughter of my son George Smith". I have not included "Mary Ann Smith daughter of the late Frank Smith" as I, at present, cannot ascertain their relationship to ggg-grandfather James. Who was Frank Smith?

I certainly would appreciate anyone's review and assistance. The blanks, "_____", represent words I cannot make out. A question mark, "?", at the end of a word represent my best guess. Any attempt and success, beyond my pair of eyes, please email me your efforts. Thanks.
