Part 335j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1824 Jean Jacques July

17 August 2010

Good Afternoon,

My desktop is in the shop. Not sure what happened but something happened to my Ubuntu operating system... and the Windows 7 configuration seemed to be running a wee bit slow. I’m now using our new Sony Vaio. This will be my fourth Vaio, and I guess I find it hard to change. Number 3 has been around six years and to refurbish it would probably cost as much as to replace it with a new one.

And as I do not have my desktop, I’ve been going somewhat antsy without my documents and images readily available for the my Transcription Project of the search of ggg-grandfather James Smith.

All-things-being-equal, I have been asked if there any other projects in the search and research of my genealogy and ancestry that I may be doing. Well it just so happens that I have been gathering images of Actes de Naissance, Birth Registrations, that are and may be included in my July line. The surnames included in this search are Collomière, Dubuc, July, and Merle.

This project of course is both a transcription and translation project; transcription from the script which may be either French or Latin, and then translation to English. Any assistance in both the transcriptions and translations certainly would be appreciated.

The first Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration, is that of great-great-granduncle Jean Jacques July. I have downloaded the image from the microfilm FHL [1647119] and the related Index from the subsequent microfilm FHL [1647120]. Both of these films are a part of a series of 297 microfilms titled Registres de l'état civil, 1793-1888 of Bourdeaux, Gironde, France.

Bon après-midi,

My Tangent – Laab – Genealogy Organization

29 July 2010

Morning,

This morning, before my volunteer stint at the local Family History Center, I’ve been trying to think of what I need to accomplish. The deeper that I reach into the search and investigation of my genealogy, ancestry, and family history the more I realize that I have to, and want to do.

But before I go into that you have to try a very quick salad, sort-of, Laab. It’s ground pork marinated in some fresh lime juice. It’s then cooked in two tablespoons of water in a hot, hot frying pan. Once the pinkness is gone, take the pork off the heat, and let it cool down a bit. Next mix in some sliced onions or shallots, some chilis, fresh chopped cilantro or culantro, and some mint. Two tablespoons of fish sauce and some more lime juice. (The recipe called for a tablespoon of toasted rice grains which I forgot… and some recipes add a bit of chopped peanuts.) Toss together and then place on top of some lettuce and greens. I really liked it… and will repeat. Laab… can also be created with chicken or beef. Simple and so good. Laab.

I will continue with my Transcription Project of the Grenada Registers of Records in the search of the origin and related genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. As a side note my paternal DNA, my confirmed Y-DNA Haplogroup is R1b1b2a; Shorthand: R-L23. The implication of course is that all Smith males in my family tree should be of the same Y-DNA Haplogroup.

Currently I am still working on Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380] The Transcription Project has produced and introduced me to a number of Smiths associated with Grenada during the period of time 1799 and 1834. I know that there is one more Item, number 7 for the above-mentioned microfilm, and then I must make a decision as to the next microfilm that I will research and transcribe. My bet is that I will choose FHL [1563377] which incorporates the years 1791 to 1799.

I have also been working on capturing Actes de Naissance, Birth Registrations, of Bordeaux in France in my research into four of my family lines. These lines include Collomière, Dubuc, July, and Merle. The Family History Library has 297 microfilms just in this category of civil birth registrations. To date I have had the chance to review beginning with the year 1840 back through 1799. It is extremely time-consuming as there may be just about a year-and-a-half per microfilm.

Another goal that I have set for myself is to organize a new Access database just to put some sense and sequencing into those microfilms that I have reviewed. There are a flurry of pink receipts floating about that just keep multiplying and multiplying.

There is also the self-imposed overhanging cloud of my new website. I’ve got a title – A Genealogy Hunt, the same as my Blog. The website will be an archive and a library of and including both the Smith and Brunhammer family lines… The basis of course will be 16 immediate family lines. The success of the A Genealogy Hunt Blog has pointed out to me that I need really consider an online forum and resource so that our family members worldwide will be able to enter into a self-sufficient “cloud” or “Internetland” library.

I’ve got a lot more ideas, but I think I will stop there. I now will translate this Posting into French, so that our French relatives and readers will get some understanding of where I’m going and what to expect.

Enjoy,

Jim

Matin,

Bonne chance,

Jim

My Tangent – Paper Mountains and Cheerios

17 July 2010

Morning,

I’m in a quandary. There are a number of things specific to my research that I have to do and I just seem to be sitting on a mound of paperwork. My immediate reaction is “humph”. The paperwork in my genealogy research and from the various projects seem to be overwhelming… but not overwhelming in a way that I can’t do or know what to do… but just where do I start. Have you ever had one of those days?

The Transcription Project of the Grenada Registers of Records is going very well. The next 1832 Record that I am working on involves gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour, his wife gg-grandaunt Sophia (née Smith), and ggg-grandfather James Smith. It is about 10 pages long. My issue is that my grey matter keeps trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

I’ve been collecting Actes de Naissances, (aka Birth Certificates) for my July, Merle, Collomière, and Dubuc lines from the Civil Registers of Bordeaux, France. I have reached to about 1807 so far. This Project leads me back to the late 1700s. Next the transcriptions and the translations. There is also a few thoughts ringing in the vast emptiness of my skull as to the search for the birth documentation of gg-grandfather Benjamin Victor Abraham.

The work on A Genealogy Hunt blog site and the imbedded links has progressed to 5 April 2010. I have to change each embedded link that refers back to a previous Posting. There is no automatic way to change the coding shy of doing it manually by editing each individual link. It is key that I finish this task in order to avoid the frustration of bouncing between the old blog site and the new.

Effort has been delayed on my website. I have many thoughts and considerations about it and what I need to get done but it is either age or my other self-imposed projects that keep me from getting to it.

Nine new microfilms arrived for me at the local Family History Center. I’ve got to get my new Access 2010 database going in order to develop my tracking system. This system helps me to get somewhat organized and avoid duplicating orders. You have to realize that I have become a microfilm junkie. There is so much information out there, and as it keeps on becoming available daily that there are times that one could think of being buried by an electronic avalanche. Many of those brick walls are falling down.

I know I attempt to work at this obsession of mine 24/7, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a 30/7 week. I think I’ll move to Mars… as long as the Internet and WiFi connections work.

And this is just about my genealogy. And each of the quadrupeds got their three Cheerios this morning. Now back to work…

Oh and by the way I’m working on a new line of Christmas quilts. Check out the latest additions at Quilts SB.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 190s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1807 Gavin Smith

28 January 2010

Evening,

No Christmas trees this posting. I just got in early from my shift at the FHC, and I just put away, i.e. reviewed six microfilms all of Bordeaux, France. This review project is the search for Birth Registrations for the Collomiere, Dubuc, July, and Merle. The ranges of my search included 1819-1822 and 1837-1840.

The next work of my transcribing is of the Document on Page 287 as found in Item 5 of microfilm FHL [1563328]. The Smith, this time is Gavin Smith the Surveyor. My previous references to Gavin Smith are included in Part 131v and Part 174s.

The Document is extremely short.

My eyes are given a rest, but I had to check out the reference to the “Levera Estate”. I discovered two cross-references in my stash, thanks to Steve. Both are publications by the Surveyor Gavin Smith. The publications are:

1801 Map of The Island of Grenada, and
1824 Reference To The Plan of The Island of Grenada.

The information is extremely interesting and the above inserted clipping from the 1801 Map highlights Levera in the Parish of St. Patrick. Once again, no hint of a connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The Page 287 Document appears to be a Letter of Certification; as follows:

And my transcription:
287
Entered 26th June 1807
These are to Certify that the Admeasurement of the
Land of Levera Estate made by me and which was sold by the
late Charles Ashwell Esquire to Meʃss Fraser Stuart & Lackey
containing as by the Diagram annexed to the said Sale 257 ½
acres (and which Diagram is copied in the Secretary’s Office) is to
the best of my knowledge and Judgment correct and I am of Opinion
that the Seller of the said Land has a Right according to the Customs
and Usages of this Island to include the King's fifty Paces in the said
Sale and to receive the Money from the Buyer for the same fee which
Reason (and not by mistake) I did include the said King's fifty Paces
in the above 257 ½ Acres. St. George's Grenada 26 June 1807

Gavin Smith
Grenada Acknowledged before me by the above named Gavin Smith
the sworn Colony Surveyor of this Island the Party signing and executing
the above Certificate as his Act and Deed this twenty sixth day
of June One thousand Eight hundred and Seven.

Ousley Rowley, DRegr
A point of information - Charles Ashwell, who is noted in the Letter, passed away in 1798.  The next transcription should be interesting. Stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent – Genealogy and Side-tracks - Research

13 November 2009

Afternoon,
And I was wondering why I stay awake and not sleep like the dolphins. I’d get a lot more done in the course of 24 hours. Since they have to breathe air, and they have to stay submerged in water, dolphins have this mechanism that allows each half of their brain sleep for eight hours at a time. Their schedule: eight hours active; eight hours half-active; and eight hours half-active. Makes sense… Who cares about sand in Afghanistan? Let’s spend our tax dollars on trying to efficiently sleep and stay awake at the same time.

Hope you got the Pierce Descendant Chart yesterday, in Part 111p. The information that I used to create the Chart was data that I had had on file from a couple of years. Putting that Descendant Chart online made me realize that there’s one hell of a lot of work that I’ve got to do with the data filed in this house, on shelves and in my hard drives. I pulled down some of the binders and stacked them beside me and I’m now feeling a wee bit claustrophobic. Stay tuned for the Sheridan and Gallagher Descendant Charts.

I need to put reins on myself, and not extend into too many new searches, if I do expect to organize that which I hope to work on. Will, one of the exciting parts of this research, to me that is, is the searching for new (albeit old) documents, paper, and data. Yesterday I reviewed three new microfilms regarding my Collomiere, Dubuc, July, and Merle families in Bordeaux, France. And yes, all the documents are in French. The three microfilms consisted of birth entries between 1826 and 1828.

Some of the images are relatively clear, but there are those where the ink in the documents appears to have bled a lot. Also, it appears, in some cases that the writing nibs of the quills seem not to have been sharpened to a single point but left unfiled at a double point and therefore cause a duplicated writing... that is, writing of near parallel lines. My eyes were getting their exercise.

Today I’ve been reading and researching ways and means to improve the Blog. If you have any thoughts and or ideas, please email me.

And Paula, I've never had quail eggs outside of Sushi.

Enjoy,

Jim

Transcription Update - The Ice Lady Cometh - Part 48

02 September 2009

Good Afternoon,

It just crossed my wee brain that we have many more hours than just those that my fingers have in my part of the world. It's as if work on our July family line never stops and that our family tree research is going on constantly to just about 24 hours a global day.

When I woke up this morning, Yann's email was waiting with his update to the transcription from Part 47. And Deborah you are so right about me being "one lucky rascal". With a family and friends network spread across the world it's great to know and appreciate their inclusion and participation.

Yann's update --

Busquet p busquete Boulon? Off(officier) Public

Well with this updated transcription and new information, the date of birth could now be construed to be the 20th August 1796. This would adjust the actual date by one day as I first presented in Part 47.

(English ice cream pail, Derby 1790. Image from Historic Foods.)

And now comes the next mystery... if gggg-grandmother Jeanne was a "glacière du chateaux", literally translated "ice stocker of the castle", what sort of occupation did she have? I discovered the following of the word "glacière" from Wikipédia:

Translated --
In Europe, many castles were equipped with special facilities for storage on ice until the late nineteenth century. Large parts buried in which were piled ice harvested from ponds in winter. The ice was isolated from soil and air outside with straw and branches. Meltwater was eliminated. The large ice castle of Chantilly was 9.25 meters in diameter and 11 meters deep, the natural iron could represent up to 500 pounds of ice per day, but it could hold 600 000 kilos.

The inserted pictured is an exterior vier, of the "cooler" found at the Medieval Park of L'Évêque of Coutances. It certainly is not the one that gggg-grandmother Jeanne (née Colommiere) July may have worked at, as this one is about 700 km, 435 miles, north of Bordeaux. No fast refrigeration transit in 1796!

Enjoy,

2 septembre 2009 - Transcription Mise à jour - La Dame de glace vient - Partie 48

Bonjour,

Bon chance,

GGG-Grandfather Jean François Jully/July - Part 47

01 September 2009

Good Afternoon,

And since I mentioned ggg-grandfather Jean-François July in Part 46, I figured I better not wait too long to present his 1796 birth registration.

Annie fantastically found this copy in the Archives in France. I'll need to find another clearer copy if one is available through the FHL, which I may have narrowed down to the collection Bordeaux Registres de l'état civil, 1793-1888; microfilms FHL[1647070] and FHL[1647081]. You'll notice that the surname is entered as "Jully".

My transcription, first attempt --

Busquet p busquete Boulon? _____ Public? _____ declaré précèdant temoins

I'll be attempting a complete translation once I get a better copy of the same. From the registration I can make out that ggg-grandfather was the son of gggg-grandparents Pierre and Jeanne (neé Colommiere) Jully. And it appears that the time of birth; "née avant hier soir à quatre heures" literally translates "born before yesterday evening at four hours".

The sort-of complex part is now the conversion of the date "le Cinq frutidor l'an quatre", the date on the registration. From my limited understanding and translation it would read "5 Fructidor Year 4". And that in turn should correspond to Monday, 22 August 1796, if I'm reading the calendar I found at Wikipedia. Fructidor was the 12th month of the French Republican Calendar.

So if the registration of the birth took place on Monday the 22nd of August, the date of birth could be the 21st of August.

And I'm so glad that Yann is the fluent one in French. Here's his update to my update of the 1816 Jully/Poujeau marriage registration, found in Part 46. He's able to catch my misses on the accents and the idiosyncrasies of the French words and spellings.

Septembre 1, 2009 - AAA-Grand-père Jean François Jully / July - Partie 47

Bonjour,

August 28, 2009 - Updated July Descendant Chart - Part 45

28 August 2009

Morning,

Before I get to a translation of the 1816 marriage registration of great-great-great-grandfather Jean François July and his first wife Françoise Poujeau, I thought that I would update the July Family Descendant Chart that I created in GenoPro. From the information I've garnered from the 1816, (see Part 44) and the 1830, (see Part 42), marriage registrations I've added the parents of Françoise (neé Poujeau) and great-great-great-grandmother Catherine Rosalie (née Dubuc).

And of course, based on the information gathered thus far, Aymond and Marie (née Laverne) Dubuc are my great-great-great-great-grandparents. That's four-times great-grandparents! Going forward I'll be abbreviating the word "great" and using the letter "g". The number of "g's" will represent the number of "greats". For example, visually you will now read gggg-grandparent, which will mean the same as great-great-great-great-grandparent. This will certainly save typing.

I've learned a new trick. I had got myself weighed down with the effort of inserting special characters any time I needed an accented letter... Eh, Zöe? Now I just have to remember which keys do what to what. The change is a function of the "Regional and Language Options" of "United States-International" in the "Control Panel".

The translation of the 1816 marriage registration to follow.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bon chance,

Jim

August 27, 2009 - The Green Containers Work - A Marriage Registration Jully and Poujeau - Part 44

26 August 2009

Morning,

And those "$19.95 but wait" green containers you see occasionally on TV, advertised in the wee hours of the morning work.

I love fresh vegetables but I always buy too much... especially mung bean sprouts, and they always go bad, cause I really don't want to have to have bean sprouts at every meal for the next umpteen days. I don't like them canned, just fresh and crunchy. I get them, and other exotic vegetables at this great Oriental Market a short drive from the house. They always have the bean sprouts packaged in one pound lots in plastic bags. And by the third day I'm always throwing out about half. Bean sprouts don't last too long. And the small packets I can get at the local grocery chain always cost too much and look like someone has picked through them and tried to cut them off at even lengths. I don't need sad looking, evenly groomed mung bean sprouts.

Well the "$19.95 but wait" green containers seem to work. I bought the bean sprouts last week, have used them in two meals and the remainder, I just checked, still look fresh and crisp. So tonight's menu is going to include bean sprouts, ground beef and carrots, at least... a variation on something called Bindaeddeok, a Korean mung bean pancake.

And following up from Part 43, from FHL[1633515] microfilm I was able to track down the 1816 Marriage Index from Bordeaux.

Everything corresponds to the 10-Year Table, even the spelling of the surnames of Jully and Poujeau. The entry reads:
486 Jully, Jean-François......" (&) Poujeau, Françoise....12 Dbre.
The new piece of information is the number 486. And on the same microfilm, Registres de l'état civil, 1793-1888, I was able to locate number 486 marriage registration, on two pages.

(I've taken the liberty and cut the images from the pages to fit into this blog.)

And so I begin the transcription -

August 18, 2009 - A July/Jully Dubuc Marriage and Address - Part 42

18 August 2009

Good Evening,

Can an address resolve the Marie Dubuc versus Catherine Rosalie Dubuc question? (See Part 41j.)

I discovered the following 10-Year Table entry of marriage registration from Gironde Archives. http://fonds-archives.cg33.fr/EC/ Etat Civil - Sadirac - Sadirac - Tables - Tables NMD - Collection communale - 1803-1882 - Naissance-Mariages-Décès: Informations Cote: 1 Mi EC 60 R9. Image 36/117.

And of course, the entry is Jully and not July...

Following the same sequence Etat Civil - Sadirac - Sadirac - Registres d'état civil - Collection communale - 1813-1832 - Naissance-Mariages-Décès: Informations Cote: 1 Mi EC 60 R5. Image 589/752, I discovered the 1830 Marriage Index.

The Jully/Dubuc marriage index entry reads, as transcribed:

18 août 2009 - Une Juillet / Juillet Dubuc mariage, et adresse - Partie 42

Bonsoir,

Suite: Etat civil - Sadirac - Sadirac - Tables - Tables NMD - Collection communale - 1803-1882 - Naissance-Mariages-Décès: Informations Cote: 1 Mi EC 60 R9. Image 36/117.

August 12, 2000 - A New July Descendant Chart - Part 40

12 August 2009

Morning,

The tropical storm and hurricane watch has now really begun.

The July family data I presented in Part 39 can appear to be somewhat confusing and overwhelming... And it is. I've gone ahead and created a Descendant Chart that includes the generations before great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette and her siblings. Please remember that this Chart can change, as can all others placed on this Blog based on new and current information. If you do have any July information that you think would be helpful in developing this major family line please forward it to me and/or contact me.

The new July Family Descendant Chart is as follows:

That's all for this posting,

Jim

---------------------------
Matin,

Jim

August 3, 2009 - Difference Between Transcription and Translation?

03 August 2009

Good Afternoon,

Just thought you needed some clip art.

Some of you have been asking me what is the difference between transcription and translation... and so here's my short answer...

Elizabeth Shown Mills in her article "Transcribing Source Materials," from OnBoard 2 (January 1996):8, writes that
When applied to historical documentation the word transcript means an exact copy. Those three words are crucial. That definition is unyielding. When a document - be it recorded on parchment, granite, or film - is transcribed, the result must be an exact copy.
And what's the difference between transcription and translation, especially when going from one language to another. I discovered online at WikiAnswers.com a good and short explanation:
For example --

μήλο is a Greek word...

To transcribe it, you would replace the Greek letters with English ones like so: μήλο - milo

To translate it, you would write its meaning like so: μήλο - apple.

There are many different levels when one is working with two different languages, and as I mentioned before, any assistance with transcribing the July family line documents, I welcome any and all. More eyes are definitely better than just my two. For an in depth discussion check Wikipedia, Translation and Transcription

In my recent conversation with Yann...
Thank you for the information. You are correct. The work that I did, took me to Sadirac. Over the past two years, I have gathered more than 200 documents, that include the families of Merle, Dubuc, Poujeau, Collomiere, and of course, July.

I collected these documents from the Archives of Gironde, France, and from the FHL in Salt Lake City. And I can not forget the great help from Annie and Guillaume, and Bernard, David, Toni, Z
öe, Thierry and Dieter.

It is now that I am organizing. At times I wonder at my own filing system.

I am very thankful for your help with each transcription. Once the transcription, of one document is almost complete, I can then translate the document, into English.

I was on the phone last night with our cousin, Zöe. She wanted to help, but thought that because her knowledge of French was limited, transcribing would take too long. I explained that, like the English documents of the Smith and Abraham families, transcribing is the part that is the most time consuming part. Translating from French to English is the easy part, once I know the script of the French.

I am frustrated, at times because of the conditions of the documents, and at times at the script, or the handwriting of the scribe. It is very helpful, when there are more sets of eyes working on the transcription.

And then there is the issue of understanding the idiosyncrasies of the reporting, and record keeping of the various countries, where our ancestors lived. A perfect example is my great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham. She lived in, at least, five different countries.
Those are my thoughts today.

Enjoy,

Jim

μήλο est un mot grec ...

Tu as raison.

Cordialement,

Jim
