Part 938sr - Figure Out How You Relate To Someone Based on cMs (CentiMorgans)

I have been introduced to a very good tool that assists with trying to figure out the probabilities based on the cM - Centimorgan.

From the International Society of Genetic Genealogy Wiki

"In genetic genealogy, a centiMorgan (cM) or map unit (m.u.) is a unit of recombinant frequency which is used to measure genetic distance. It is often used to imply distance along a chromosome, and takes into account how often recombination occurs in a region...

The genetic genealogy testing companies 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA and MyHeritage DNA use centiMorgans to denote the size of matching DNA segments in autosomal DNA tests. Segments which share a large number of centiMorgans in common are more likely to be of significance and to indicate a common ancestor within a genealogical timeframe."

The tool is the DNA Painter, The specific tool I am referring to is the Shared cM Project 3.0 tool v4. Click on the highlighted links provided.

Here are the results of me to a 1st cousin who's a match at 23andMe. 23andME indicates a cM result of 816.

Here are the relationship probabilities.

As I know that the individual is my 1st Cousin, it is a forgone conclusion that he, KLS, and I are rated at a 95.25% probability.

Part 937ss – GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott – A Confusion?

Good Day,

Note to self – The discovery of more documents may and can change the actual connections of your ancestors to me. Based on the discoveries, everything is subject to change.

From the records I have discovered in my search regarding GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott, there is a wee bit, actually a lot of confusion. The confusion is whether there are 3 or 4 wives and partners. At this point of my search I have followed the trail of the documents and I believe that GGG-Grandfather Alexander had 6 children, that I have been able to account for, belong to his 3 wives and partners.

His wives and partners were –

1. Anne Wall – I have discovered that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott and Anne Wall were not married at the time of their sons’ baptism. They did have 2 sons:

a. William Scott – b. 1824
b. Allan Scott – b. 1828

2. Eliza Hall – I am still looking for the possibility of a Marriage Registration. They had 1 son.

a. Alexander Scott – b. 1830

3. Eliza Miller – GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid married Eliza Miller in 1846. They had 3 children:

a. Isabel Anne Georgina Scott – b. 1847
b. Charles James Cater Scott – b. 1849
c. Fanny Auguste Mary Scott – b. 1853

GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott passed away some time between 1853 and 1861. His death could have happened somewhere between Kingston, Jamaica and Liverpool, England.

After his death, Eliza (née Miller) Scott married George Louthean. GGG-Grandfather Alexander’s widow Eliza became George Louthean’s 3rd wife.

I have presented an almost concise date line of events. Outlining the events in this manner has help me to further hone in on what and how they occurred in GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott’s life.

• 1864 March 16 – Caroline Gordon Louthean baptized, born to George Louthean and Eliza (formerly Scott née Miller) in the Parish of Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester. (Document on file.)

Part 936ss – 1864 Burial – GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott

Good Day,

And many thanks to HS for your assistance researching the Proprietary School in Charlton. See Part 934ss.

I have now found the 1864 Burial Registration for Great-Great Grandfather Alexander Scott.

Great-Great-Grandfather passed away at the age of 36 years and 9 years after he was married in 1855. He is buried in the Marley Graveyard.

In my search and research of Great-Great Grandfather Alexander Scott’s live, I stumbled across the following book by Dr. Henry Bailey and published in 1873, “Twenty Five Years At St. Augustine’s College”.

Great-Great Grandfather Alexander’s Obituary is made mention on page 188 of the book.

Part 935sm – 1855 Marriage – GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott

The day is the 12th of May 1855. It is Saturday, and it is a nice day for a wedding.

This is the date that Great-Great Grandparents Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott were married.

As the 1855 Marriage Registration states that Great-Great Grandfather Alexander Scott was a “Clerk in Holy Orders” and “of St, David’s Parish", is it possible that this may have been one of his early appointments in Grenada once he finished at St. Augustine’s College in Canterbury, England?

Also could GG-Grandfather Alexander have been “stationed” at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Genville in the Parish of St. David’s?

And here is a coincidence. Both witnesses' first names were "Henry". GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah's first son "Henry Alexander Cumberland Scott" was born just under a year later, on 16 April 1856 at Paradise Pen, Kingston, Jamaica.

Part 934ss – 1841 UK Census – Could This Possibly Be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott?

Good Day,

As I made mention in Part 933ss, I have come across a possibility of an 1841 UK Census that could, all-things-being-equal, include GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at the age of 11-years. The Alexander Scott that I may found appears to be attending a school in on Lee Road, Park Terrace in the Parish of Charlton, Kent, England.

Here is the 1841 UK Census for Charlton -

Names of each Person who abode therein the preceding night – Alexander Scott

Age and Sex – Male – 11

Profession, Trade, Employment or of Independent Means – Proprietary School Where Born, Whether Born same County – N(o)

Is this GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at 11 years old? Did GG-Grandfather Alexander attend the Proprietary School?

I started to check Genuki and it appears that not many schools in the area existed prior to the 1841 UK Census. The Blackheath Proprietary School may be the one listed in the 1841 Census. The summary from the Enumerator's Schedule breaks it down as follows - County of Kent, Hundred of Blackheath..., Parish of Charlton.

The Enumerator's description -

"The Houses from the Boundary Stone by Brunswick Place along the East side of Lee Road Cresswell Park, Park Place and as far as the Boundary Stone in Lee Road. All the houses in the Park called Blackheath Park within the Parish of Charlton and that part of Redbrook Upper Farm in the parish of Charlton without the Borough of Greenwich."

A couple of things that make a logical argument that this could be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott.

(1) Same name

(2) Approximate same age, 11 years old. GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott was born 17 Aug 1830. The 1841 Census was taken by the Enumerator on 11 Jun 1841. Ages recorded in the 1841 Census were as close to actual ages for those 15 and under. Anyone over 15 was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.

(3) In the columns "Where Born", the 1st of 2 columns asks, "Whether Born in same County, the response for Alexander Scott is "N". The 2nd column may be the one that indicates that this is not GG-Grandfather Alexander as the question is "Whether Born in Scotland, Ireland, or Foreign Parts". This column is left blank.

There are several files on record regarding the Blackheath Proprietary School at the National Archives. It would be a good luck to check the files, especially the 1841 listings of the student attendees and to discover where they, especially this Alexander Scott originate.

Today, the Blackheath Proprietary School no longer stands, excepting at the possible site there are buildings. Above the portal of one of the buildings is the following sign.

Part 933ss – 1851 UK Census – GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott Attends College

Good Day,

At times, certain “plain” documents can reveal much more than you may be looking to find. In this case, it is the 1851 UK Census.

And a “Hello” to a new family connection TK. We’ve been able to find and trace to our MCRA (Most Common Recent Ancestor) based on our Family Ancestry work and our Autosomal DNA testing.

Our common ancestors are GG-Grandparents Rev. Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott. My Great-Grandmother was Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith. TK is descended from Great-Grandmother Ella’s brother, my Great-Granduncle Hubert Somerville Scott.

Here is a copy of the page of the 1851 UK Census that identifies, who more than likely is GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott when a young man of 20 years old.

This is interesting as GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott, who was born in Jamaica, does, in his early 20s head back to the Caribbean to follow his “Missionary” zeal.

I have come across a possibility of an 1841 UK Census that could be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at the age of 11-years. The Alexander Scott that I have found appears to be attending a school in Charlton, England.

Part 932ss – 1833 Baptism GG-Grandfather Reverend Alexander S. M. Scott

Today I am working with the Baptism Registration of my Great-Great Grandfather Rev. Alexander S. M. Scott. The date of the Baptism registration is 30 July 1833. It is the “Record of Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Saint Andrew in the County of Surry in the year 1833”. This is the same Parish in Jamaica in which I was born and baptized, 118 years later.

3. Leonard Campbell McKowen Scott – born circa 1858

4. Hubert Somerville Scott – born 20 Sep 1858, Nassau, Bahamas

5. Percy St. John Scott – born circa 1861

Regarding my search and research, I would think that GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah were married in about 1855 and somewhere between Grenada and Jamaica.

Part 931ss – More Scott Greats To Add

Good Day,

The search for my Scott ancestors who came before my Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith has been somewhat of a disarranged search and research project.

I am trying to associate and ensure that I get the correct links of relatives in the proper place and generation.

My 3-times Great-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott had 6 children by 4 wives and partners. On my part there is no holier-than-thou-art thought or attitude. One of the 6 children was my Great-Great Grandfather Alexander S. M. Scott.

The first issue I have is that 2 of his wives were both named Eliza: Eliza Hall and Eliza Mitter. Currently, based on my first pass of the documents and my research I believe Eliza Hall may have been my 3-times Great-Grandmother. I believe that she was the mother of my Great-Great-Grandfather Rev. Alexander S. M. Scott. He was the father of my Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith.

The second issue is that I have found the information that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott may have had a child by a 4th partner, name unknown. The child would have been my 2nd Great-Grandaunt Isabel Georgiana Scott.

Here are the names and children that I have been able to connect to GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott.

1. Anne Wall – Wife of 3rd Great-Grandfather

a. William Scott – born 6 Sep 1824, Jamaica

b. Caroline Gordon Louthean – born circa 1864, Cheltenham, England. (Eliza Mitter, I believe married her 2nd husband George Louthean 6 Nov 1862 at Trent Church, Enfield, Middlesex, England.)

This does get somewhat confusing.

It has been sometime since I last wrote an entry to my blog A Genealogy Hunt. Today I begin a research and search project on my Scott Family link.



Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith was born 6 September 1857 at Bilney, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas.

Her parents were my GG-Grandparents Reverend Alexander S. M. and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowan) Scott. (Reference: Bahamas Civil Registration, 1850-1959, Births 1856-1857. FHL #222934; Image 232 of 311.)

As always, I do not take family tree information that I find on the Internet for granted. If an entry does not have any source citation, I will only use the information provided as a stepping-stone and as a guideline to assist with my search.

The following Smith / Scott Family Ancestry line is composed of information that I have acquired from online family trees. I am, now, not certain that the line links are correct. My task is to tract down as many possible source documents that I can find.
