Part 715d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1895 – Birth, Baptism, and Death – Grandaunt Helen Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

15 June 2012

Good Day,

The Genealogy trek continues with the discovery of the vital registrations of grandaunt Helen Doherty (aka Dougherty)’s very short life.

In my project to gather all documentation of all Doherty family and ancestors I have uncovered the pertinent vital records for the life of great-grandaunt Helen Doherty, the only daughter of g-grandparents Gerald and Mary (née Sheridan) Doherty.

The first document and image are the pages, extracted from the 1895 St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms. Grandaunt Helen was born 24 January 1895.

She was baptized by Father M Y Fallon at St. Paul’s Church 3 February 1895. Her sponsors were John and Mary E. Doherty.

Part 705d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Doherty Descendant Chart Updated

05 June 2012

Good Day,

Since I posted Part 665d, my last update to the Doherty Descendant Chart, I have definitely added a number of new bits of information and data. As I continue to mention, and write, my work in genealogy is “Always Under Construction”. Even though everything has happened in the past, I am constantly finding and learning new details about ancestors and family members.

I am a very visual person. I have to see everything in pictures, especially in the form and Descendant and Ancestral charts. Above is my latest update to the Doherty Family Line and the Doherty Descendant Chart.

As always the Doherty Descendant Chart is in reference to the ancestral relationships to Andy. I have highlighted his direct Doherty line by indicating his immediate blood line with yellow and blue symbols. All new, updated, and changed data is emphasized in red. The codes that are interspersed throughout the Chart are the Part numbers as referenced to my Postings and discussion on A Genealogy Hunt.

If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, and ideas, please feel to get in touch with me.

Part 703d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Is Greta Actually Margaret? – And, Were There Eleven Dohertys?

02 June 2012

Good Day,

In my genealogy hunt for the offspring of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty, all-things-being-equal, I can only go by the "11" children as listed as credited to gg-grandmother Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty in the 1900 US Census.

According to the 1900 US Census taken in Wilmington, it enumerated and noted that great-grandmother Margaret Dougherty (aka Doherty) had had 11 children. At the point of time when the 1900 US Census was taken, on 2nd of June 1900, six of her children were still living and they were listed as: "Gerrold, Margaret, Fannie, Mary, Lizzie, and Katie".

1900 US Federal Census, Delaware, New Castle County,
Wilmington Hundred, Wilmington City, 2 June 1900.

I am almost convinced that great-grandaunt Greta was great-grandaunt Margaret.

And here is my logic... 1. Greta is NOT listed in the 1900 US Census.

2. Margaret is listed in the 1900 US Census. Her birth month and year are listed as December 1869, and her age is given at 30 years.

3. Greta is a diminutive form of Margaret, of which Greta is a nickname.

4. Greta's 2nd November 1950 Death Certificate has her birth date, as informed by her sister Catherine Doherty, as December 23, 1871. There is a possibility that great-grandaunt Catherine may not have provided the exact day and year of great-grandaunt Greta (née Margaret)'s birth date.

5. Margaret's Baptism Registration from St. Peter's Register of Baptisms records her birth data as 22 December 1869.

6. The family moved from St. Peter's to St. Paul's just after St. Paul's was established in 1869. St. Paul's was established on around 20 December 1869.

All-things-being-equal, and of course this could change, I would tend to believe, based on the above logic, that Greta was actually Margaret.

I have been examining available documentation that is uniquely different, available for Greta versus Margaret. And as I note that if Greta is Margaret, which is highly likely, then there should be another child, an additional one to make the total 11.

As things went, it would appear that whoever provided the information to the enumerator when he (or she) knocked at the door in June of 1900, s/he, the Doherty providing the information, may have had first-hand knowledge of the existence of 11 children. There were 7 persons listed as living at the house: gg-grandmother Margaret; her six living children, and grandfather Gerald. If the enumerator came during the day to take the Census information I would presume the majority of the six were more than likely at work and grandfather Gerald may have been at school as he would have been about 6 or 7 years old. There is a great possibility that it was gg-grandmother Margaret who may have provided the enumerator with the information.

All-things-being-equal, I would tend to believe that great-grandaunt Frances may have been the "Fannie Annie" who listed in the St, Peter’s Register of Baptisms. It is too coincidental regarding the dates and the fact that, and I believe, she was known as "Aunt Fannie". Fannie is a definitive diminutive of the name Frances. I just think it may have been a case of the Priest getting his bookkeeping done and in the process he may have put down what he "remembered".

This is sort of the same situation as the Greta versus Margaret and the Doherty versus Dougherty spelling issues. Note also that the enumerator listed both great-grandfather and grandfather as "Gerrod" versus their correct names "Gerald".

When it comes to research I have found three things that are usually all over the place - spellings of names, dates of birth, and years of immigration. Putting everything in place, I usually accept all names as I see them. I enter the first found occurrence of a name on the first document I come across into my genealogy database. As I find subsequent spellings and iterations of the name I add them to my database in the section "Also known as".

And now, if great-grandaunt Greta is great-grandaunt Margaret then I am still searching for the 11th Doherty sibling. Who knows whom I may find?

Stay tuned and enjoy,

Jim

Part 701d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1880 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Catherine Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

31 May 2012

Good Day,

You NEVER know what the day will bring in a detailed, or not so detailed, Genealogy Hunt. Just be prepared...

The last child of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty is great-grandaunt Catherine. The 1880 St. Paul's Baptism Registration of great-grandaunt Catherine Doherty indicates that she was baptized 22 August 1880. Her birth date is provided as 11 August 1880.

Above is the page copy from the St. Paul's Register of Baptisms and from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084].

And I thought that this next document in my genealogy search of the Doherty Family was to be my last discovery.  But no, you would not believe what I just found this morning... but I am not going to say that which I found until I see the possible documentation and recording in the Registers of Baptism of St. Peters.  At first glance, it looks like it just might be correct. Stay-tuned...

Part 700d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1878 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Elizabeth Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

30 May 2012

Good day,

And this genealogy thing continues.

It is a wonder at times trying to decipher the possible discrepancies found on individual documents. I have made it a personal goal to gather as many different types of facts and near-facts as I can. I have discovered, through my searches and research... And drive to keep looking, that there are definitive differences of data and information.

Next in the discovery queue is the 1878 Baptism Registration of great-grandaunt Elizabeth Doherty. Great-Grandaunt Elizabeth was either the 9th or 10th child born to gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty.

I will address the issue of 10 or 11 Doherty children, albeit great-grandaunts and great-granduncles shortly. Stay tuned.

Part 699d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1876 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Mary Agnes Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

29 May 2012

Good Day,

Not even June 1st and we're in the throes of a great soaking from Beryl, number 2 on the radar scope. Methinks that NOAA may have to adjust the start of the Hurricane season to mid-May versus the current June 1. The powers that be should set the new schedule for 2013, that is if the Mayans allow us to see a new year.

And I just continue my genealogy trek into the Doherty (aka Dougherty) Famly Line.

The next child of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (nee Doherty) Doherty is great-grandaunt Mary Agnes. She is number 9 of the possible 10 or 11 children.

From the St. Paul's Register of Baptisms and from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084], above is my best copy of the Baptism Register image.

Part 698d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1874 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Fannie Annie Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

28 May 2012

Good day, and once again a meaningful Memorial Day,

One key to Genealogy Research is organization… and boy do I need, at times, a good dose of organization.

The next of the Doherty great-grandaunts and great-granduncles that I have been able to locate is reference to the 1875 Baptism Registration of great-grandaunt Fannie Annie Doherty… The copy of the page of the St. Paul’s Register of Baptism is fairly hard to read and decipher as it is extremely dark. In my work of capturing the image I had to cut and paste a couple of images in order to produce a reasonable and somewhat legible copy.

Initially I was looking for a registration at St. Paul’s Church in Wilmington of one Frances Doherty, but to no avail. The one I did find, and whose parents are listed as “Phil. Dougherty & Margt”, is one for a “Fannie Annie”. According to the Baptism Register document great-grandaunt Fannie Annie was born 20 December 1874 and baptized on either the 5th or 15th of January 1875.

Downloaded from the St. Paul’s Register from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084], here is my reconstructed image.

My transcription, as best as I can read –

65

Register of Baptisms

1874 & 5

Date – Jan 5th or 15th
Name of Child – Fannie Annie
Lawful Child of – Phil. Dougherty & Margt
Born – Dec 20 (1874)
Sponsors – Jas Kelly? ? ?
Name of Priest – M. Fallon?

All-things-being-equal, great-grandaunt Fannie Annie Doherty is the same person as great-grandaunt Frances Doherty. What appears to be coincidental, at this point in my research is the finding of the Death Record of the Fannie Doherty who did live at 731 Madison Street and died on 24 May 1895. (See Part 696d.)

In 1874 and 1875 gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty, with their children, including their newborn daughter, Fannie Annie all lived at 731 Madison Street in Wilmington. Was great-grandaunt Fannie Annie named for the elder Fannie Doherty? Perhaps?

If you have any question, thoughts, ideas, and comments please feel free to email me.

Part 695d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1873 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle John Patrick Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

26 May 2012

Good Day,

This is my 900th Posting to A Genealogy Hunt. A Genealogy Hunt began as a blog in May 2009. All-things-being equal this may mean that I take about 65/6 days off every year. Maybe, but how do I account for the 240 Postings to Quilts SB during the same time period.

The second St. Paul’s document in my genealogy search that I was able to find is the Baptism Registration of great-granduncle John Patrick. His birth, in Wilmington, is recorded 13 March 1873 and his baptism was celebrated 16 March 1873.

Based on the documents that I have found and we now have on file the following are the Doherty (aka Dougherty) siblings up to 1873:

Baptized at St. Peter’s –

1. Gerald – Born 28 November 1864 (Part 678d)

2. Helen - Born 25 March 1866 (Part 679d)

3. Mary Ellen – Born 14 January 1868 (Part 683d)

4. Margaret – Born 22 December 1869 (Part 684d)

Baptized at St. Paul’s –

5. Philip – Born 3 September 1871 (Part 693d)

Here is the image of the page 36 from the St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms. I have downloaded it from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084].

And my transcription –

Part 693d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1871 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle Philip Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

25 May 2012

Good Day,

What exactly has caused me to give into this obsession of genealogy? I think it is the adventure of the search and the thrill of the find. Either that or I am just plain obsessed and headed out of my mind. But the pleasure and rush is sweet when I find that which I am searching for.

And now as I promised, I have found 6 more of the 11 Baptism Registrations that I started out to find. Following from Part 684d and the 1869 Birth and Baptism of great-grandaunt Margaret Doherty I have located the documentation of another sibling. This time it is of great-granduncle Philip Doherty.

It appears that the great-great-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty relocated their family’s place of worship from St. Peter’s Church to St. Paul’s. St. Peter’s is at N. West Street and W. 6th Street in Wilmington. St. Paul’s Church is at the corner of 4th and Jackson Streets, in Wilmington. The relocation happened about 1870.

The first document I was able to turn up is the Baptism Registration of great-granduncle Philip. His birth, in Wilmington, is recorded 3 September 1871 and his baptism is celebrated 10 September 1871.

Here is the image of the page 20 from the St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms. I have downloaded it from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084].

And my transcription –

Note that the Priest did enter the Doherty surname as “Dougherty” in the Register of Baptisms.

Part 684d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1869 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Margaret Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

12 May 2012

Good Day,

The search and research continues into the genealogy and gathering of documentation of the Doherty Family Line. The Baptism Registrations of the first four of eleven children of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty have now been found from the Registers of St. Peter’s Church, now Cathedral in Wilmington, Delaware. And now I have to find the subsequent seven.

This next one is of great-grandaunt Margaret Doherty. Her baptism is dated 26 December 1869 and the Registration refers to her birth date as the 22nd of the same month.

Once again the Priest/Scribe has entered and spelled the family surname Doherty as “Dougherty”. The Priest/Scribe is the same as the one who registered great-grandaunt Margaret’s elder sister great-grandaunt Mary Ellen, a year earlier.

Here is the image of the Page from the St. Peter’s Parish Register and downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

And the Baptism Registration is in Latin.

Decembris

1869

26 Bapt Margaretam, filiam Phillipii Dougherty
et Margareta Doughtery, natum 22 hujus Sponsosores
Joane Kelly et Brigitta Hayes

M.A. McGrane

My attempt to translate –

December

1869

26 Baptised Margaret, daughter of Philip Dougherty
and Margaret Doughtery, born 22. Sponsors
John Kelly and Bridget Hayes

M.A. McGrane

And now begins the search for the appropriate documentation for the seven younger siblings. All-things-being-equal the Doherty Family may have progressed to a different Church.

Based on the possibility that great-grandaunt Greta Doherty was born about 1870, I have been able to find three possible Roman Catholic Churches in Wilmington. Documentation exists for three other Churches apart from St. Peter’s. These three Churches are: Saint Ann – 1870; St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception – 1857; and St. Paul – 1869. All-things-being-equal St. Paul’s may be the closest church to the Doherty home… and as transportation to Church circa 1870 was more or less by foot or some sort of equine mode.

The top inserted image is of 1010 and 1012 King Street in Wilmington. Borrowed from the University of Delaware Library, Special Collections Department. It is from the Wilmington Dental Manufacturing Company. Catalogue of Artificial Teeth and Condensed Price-list of Dental Materials, Instruments, Furniture, &c. Well the search continues. If you have any question, comment, thought, or ideas please feel free to contact me.

Part 674d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1863 Marriage – GG-Grandparents Philip and Margaret Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

03 May 2012

Good Day,

A quiet day on the genealogy front…and the search keeps going on.

I have been working on the 4 January 1863 Marriage Registration of Andy’s gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret Doherty. I discovered an image of the page from Saint Peter’s Church, later Cathedral, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Here is the image of the page as downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787872].

This is my transcription…

Januarius 1863

4th Phillippus & Margareta Doherty,
prius dispensatione obtentio a tertio
gradu Consanguinitatis ab Reverendissimis Domino
Jacobo F Wood - coram
me Matrimonuum inierunt
Testes fuerunt Gulielmus McGonnigee
& Catharina
P. R. O'Brien

Thanks to Lynn, Helen, Paul, and Kitty for assistance with the transcription of the Latin script.

Here is my translation...

January 1863

4th Philip and Margaret Doherty,
first having obtained a dispensation from the third
degree of consanguinity, of the Most Revered
Jacob F Wood - before
I took Marriage

The witnesses were William McGonnigee
and Catherine

P. R. O'Brien

Third degree of consanguinity would indicate gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret as 2nd Cousins.

I learned this about Degrees of Consanguinity at a site at Wikepedia.

"Religious and traditional law

In the Roman Catholic Church, unwittingly marrying a closely consanguineous blood relative is grounds for an annulment, but dispensations were granted, actually almost routinely (the Canon law of the Catholic Church banned marriages within the fourth degree of relationship [third cousins] from at least the year 1215). In the Canon Law system (as well as in the common law system), the degree of relationship is determined by counting the number of steps counted between each party to the common ancestor and taking the higher number of the two. The general rule was that while fourth cousins could marry without dispensation, those more closely related needed dispensation, with it becoming harder and harder to obtain the closer the couple were related."

And if I read this correctly then gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret may have had the same great-grandparents or Andy’s 4-times great-grandparents Doherty/Dougherty...

Any comments, questions, thoughts, and ideas, please contact me.

Part 664d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1889 Wilmington City Directory – GG-Grandparents Philip and Margaret Doherty aka Dougherty

18 April 2012

Good day,

The search continues into the genealogy of the Doherty Family… and it certainly can get confusing as to which Doherty is which Dougherty is which Docherty. The fact that there are a number of documents and publications that spell and present the surname in different ways only means that the scope of search only broadens. Thank you Helen for your insight and knowledge…

One fact that is for certain is that the Doherty/Dougherty family did live at 731 Madison Street in Wilmington, Delaware. This certainty assists me with determining if I am focusing on the correct family regardless of the spelling of the surnames.

Today in The Wilmington City Directory for 1889 I discovered the individual listings for both gg-grandfather Philip Doherty and gg-grandmother Margaret Dougherty.

Even though each is recorded with a different variation of the surname Doherty and Dougherty, they are both listed at the same location 731 Madison Street.

GG-Grandfather Philip is recorded as Moulder and working at P.& J. Co., aka Pusey and Jones Company.  GG-Grandmother Margaret is listed owning a Dry Goods, Notions, and Trimmings business at her home location at 731 Madison Street. Great-Grandfather Gerald is also listed as Gerald Dougherty as a boarder at 731 Madison and his occupation is provided as a Machinist at P. & J. Co., the same company employer as his father, gg-grandfather Philip.

These recordings are unique in the sense that usually it was only the head of household and/or business owner listed in the City Directories… and here we got “a bang for the $5.00”, so-to-speak.

Here are the Pages of the 1889 Wilmington City Directory as downloaded from DistantCousin.com

The top inserted photograph is of P. & J. Co., Pusey and Jones Company from History of Delaware. 1609-1888, Volume II by J. Thomas Scharf. A.M., LL..D.. Philadelphia, 1888.

And the search continues.

Part 663d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1919 Death – GG-Grandmother Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

17 April 2012

Good Day,

Well being home yesterday, I was somewhat exhausted from our trip and showing at MQX East, but I did not want to eat at any restaurant... and I wanted something simple.

And I found it - Chicken Jalfrezi, a Pakistani curry with tomatoes and capsicum. Extremely easy to make - Chicken thighs, onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, ginger, turmeric, cumin, salt, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground cardamon and nutmeg, zucchini, and cilantro. Topped with some plain yogurt, with Basmati rice and Naan bread. It certainly was good and easy.

Last night as I kept searching and following the trail of the Doherty Family genealogy I chanced upon the 29 December 1919 Certificate of Death of gg-grandmother Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty. But here it gets a wee bit confusing, or not… It just might be the way the information was taken down, as provided by the Informant, one of her daughters.

Note the spelling of gg-grandmother Margaret’s maiden name – Doherty, and her married name – Doherty. According to family information her maiden name may have been Dougherty, but as I have encountered since the 1870 Census, I have noted three different presentations of the surname: Docherty, Doherty, and Dougherty. The Certificate of Death certainly doesn’t alleviate the muddle in the way the surname may have originated. It certainly does provide various spellings.

Here is the image as obtained from the Delaware Vital Records from the Delaware Public Archives at Dover, Delaware. Copy was downloaded from Ancestry.com.

The copy is extremely legible and I will not transcribe the actual document. But here is the firsthand news… gg-grandmother Margaret’s parents are listed as Gerald and Ellen (née McGuiness) Doherty. These are Andy’s great-great-great-grandparents Gerald and Ellen (née McGuiness) Doherty.

The ancestry search continues. Stay tuned for my updated Doherty Descendant Chart.

Part 661d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1874-75 Delaware State Directory and Gazetteer – Doherty (aka Docherty, aka Dougherty) – Wilmington, Delaware

09 April 2012

Good Day,

And as we are getting ready and packing for our trip to MQX East 2012 in Providence, Rhode Island, I thought that I would take a few minutes and spend some time on the genealogy of Doherty Family.

I did a bit more searching and I discovered Andy’s great-great-grandfather Philip Dougherty in The Delaware State Directory and Gazetteer, for 1874-75. It includes a complete Directory of the City of Wilmington. The entry on Page 128 for gg-grandfather Philip reads:

Dougherty, Philip, Lab., h 731 Madison

And even though the City Directory is 1874-75, 26 years later Andy’s great-grandaunts Greta, Frances, Mary, Katherine, and Elizabeth, gg-grandparents Philip’s and Margaret’s five daughters, live just about three blocks away around the corner at 911 West Eighth Street.

I noticed that there are a number of other Doughertys, possibly related to gg-grandfather Philip on Madison Street. Also are the two, Daniel and Hugh Dougherty, the same men who were boarding in 1870 with the Doughtery Family.

The source citation of the above pages of The Delaware State Directory and Gazetteer for 1874-75 is the Haith Trust Digital Library.

Stay tuned for the next installment of the Doherty Family Genealogy.

Part 660d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1880 and 1900 Censuses – Doherty (aka Docherty, aka Dougherty) – Wilmington, Delaware

08 April 2012

Good Day and Happy Easter,

And don't you just love genealogy... One can get totally mixed up with names and dates, and then again there really isn't anyone around to ask which name or which date is correct. At times methinks that it is our ancestors having a great big laugh on us.

In my pursuit and current focus on the Doherty Family of Wilmington, Delaware, I've run across some more deviations in the actual spelling of this surname. The 1880 Census has the name as Doherty, and the 1900 Census changes the spelling to Dougherty.

(1880 US Census, Wilmington, Delaware)

The 1880 US Census now lists gg-grandparents Phillip and Margaret Doherty; their son Gerald; and four daughters: Gretta, Fannie, Mary A, and Lizzie all living in Wilmington at 731 Madison Street.

(1900 US Census, Wilmington, Delaware)

The 1900 US Census, 20 years later, lists gg-grandmother Margaret Dougherty, her son Gerrold, her five daughters Margaret, Fannie, Mary, Lizzie, and Katie, and her grandson Gerrold. They are all living at the family home at 731 Madison Street.

By process of elimination, and based on the surname enumerated, it would logically make sense that grandson Gerrold is the son of gg-grandmother Margaret's son, Gerrold. This grandson Gerrold is Andy's grandfather, also known as Gerald.

And now comes another piece of evidence, that should help us in our power search. I'm referring to the above page of the 1900 US Census. The enumerator listed that gg-grandmother Margaret Dougherty had had 11 children… And that at the date of the Census, June 2nd, 1900 five of the children may have passed away.

My next piece and source of evidence is the Delaware State Directory and Gazetteer, for 1874-75. And as I am working in the updating of the Doherty Descendant Chart, I keep stumbling on more and more pertinent documentation... And NO I am not just pressing a leaf.

Stay-tuned, more to follow,

Enjoy,

Part 659d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1870 Census – Doherty (aka Docherty, aka Dougherty) – Wilmington, Delaware

07 April 2012

Good Day,

The genealogy journey continues.

Today I decided to update the Doherty Descendant Chart… and boy, oh boy, have I found some new information. And I will be posting these finds and my notes in a number of Parts. You will have to keep coming back to get the latest and greatest updates.

(1870 US Census, Wilmington, Delaware)

I finally discovered the 1870 US Census highlighting the Philip Docherty Family. Docherty? And so we now have three possible spellings of the surname Doherty: Doherty, Docherty, and Dougherty. The 1870 US Census for Wilmington enumerates that the family surname is Docherty.

The 1870 Census is dated 6 July 1870 at Wilmington, Subdivision No. 27 in the County of New Castle, in Delaware.

In the household included gg-grandparents Philip and Margart Docherty; their five-year old son Jerald (aka Gerald); their six-month old daughter Margartt; and two Boarders, Daniel and Hugh Docherty. There is no immediately apparent relationship indicated between gg-grandfather Philip and the two Boarders, Daniel and Hugh, excepting their last names.

According to the enumeration gg-grandfather Philip there is a possibility that he and the Board Daniel may have been joint owners of the house as it is listed that each has a "Value of Real Estate" of $2,000 for a total of $4,000. Could they have been joint owners of the house?

Is there a chance that there may be some immediate relationship between gg-grandfather Philip and the two Boarders? Based on the ages enumerated there could be a calculated possibility that as the Boarder Daniel Docherty is listed at 60 years old and the Boarder Hugh is noted at 28 years, they may be related as father and brother of gg-grandfather Philip. GG-grandfather is given the age of 38 years. Just a thought...

My source citation for the 1870 US Census is The National Archives, 1870 U.S. census, population schedules. NARA microfilm publication M593, 1,761 rolls. Washington, D.C. The image is downloaded via Ancestry.com.

And now we have a few more pieces to the puzzle of the Doherty Family genealogy. Stay tuned for the next episodes. And stay tuned for the forth coming update to the Doherty Descendant Chart.

If you have any comments and/or ideas, or any actual documentation pre-dating the Year 1870, please feel free to contact me. Does any reader have any idea(s) regarding a possible relationship between gg-grandfather Philip and the Boards, Daniel and Hugh Docherty?

Enjoy,

Part 657d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Doherty – 1940 US Census – Wilmington, Delaware

05 April 2012

Good Day,

The sun is shining through the clouds this morning… and it is a gorgeous day here in Tampa.

As mentioned in my last Posting regarding the 1940 Census and the Brunhammer Family, I would next search for the Doherty Family.

Flipping the images, as provided by Ancestry.com, I started at the 127th Page, where I discovered the Brunhammer Family. All I had to do was flip through four more Pages and there at 2006 Woodlawn Avenue, in New Castle County in Wilmington, Delaware, was the Dougherty Family. Is this the correct Family? Doherty versus Dougherty…

Most definitely the right family… Included in the household are Andy’s grandparents Gerald (Doc) and Myrtle (née Holmes) Dougherty albeit Doherty; his uncles Gerald (Doc), Phillip (Phil), William (Bill), and John (Holmesy); his aunts Katherine (Kitty), Helen, and Nancy; and his mother Myrtle F(rances).

The Enumeration District is indicated as 4-45 and the Census was taken on April 5, 1940.

Here is the image of the page of the 1940 US Census highlighting the Dougherty Family. Obviously the enumerator may not have asked how to spell the surname Doherty. He or she, the enumerator, must have made an assumption and wrote the surname as Dougherty.

As a note and from About.com Genealogy – The name Docherty is from the word “dochartach” meaning “obstructive.” Docherty is the most common Scottish form of this surname, while Doherty and Dougherty are usually of Irish derivation.

The above inserted image from the National Archives and Records Administration shows tabulators recording information from over 120,000 enumerators who scoured the United States to collect data for the 1940 Census.

And now to continue my genealogy trek and search.

Enjoy,

Jim.

Success! Number five expectation of eighteen of myself. I’ve created a new Doherty Descendant Chart using GenoPro. This is the ancestry of Andy’s maternal line, following from his mother Myrtle Francis Gertrude (née Doherty) Brunhammer… also known as “Sis”.

Thank you to Helen and Kitty for providing the information and copies of the Doherty genealogies.

Enjoy,

Jim
