Part 926s – New Autosomal DNA Results – CRI Genetics

Good Day,

Well my results are in. That is, the results of my Autosomal DNA testing from CRI Genetics.

The breakdown provided by CRI Genetics fit into 5 main area categories. I've added the "Unassigned" area category to make sure that there is a sum total of 100%. These are

  • European
  • South Asian
  • AdMixed American
  • East Asian
  • African
  • Unassigned (to add up to 100%)
  • 86.2%
  • 6.5%
  • 4.5%
  • 1.7%
  • 0.9%
  • 0.2%




I have now had my Autosomal DNA testing done by the following companies. (These are not in any specific order.)

1. Family Tree DNA

2. Ancestry

3. 23andMe

4. Living DNA

5. My Heritage

6. National Geographic Geno 2.0

7. CRI Genetics

I have attempted to breakdown the results and tried to lump similar area categories together. As you can see from the Comparative Chart there are some similarities in test results, based on the way each company focuses with their testing procedures. But there are also some differences.


The International Society of Genetic Genealogy provides a very good company to company comparison for 4 of the organizations that provide Autosomal testing. The two (2) that are not included are Living DNA and CRI Genetics.

And as I have always said, genealogy is not necessarily only taking the details of one Autosomal DNA test. It is the search and research into the sources of documentation and family history that can lead one back into the resources of their ancestors.

Autosomal DNA testing is a tool that can assist. It is NOT the definite answer as to who you are descended from.


If you have any question about testing either your Y-DNA, mtDNA, or Autosomal DNA, please make sure that you research and decide which type of testing is the one that you should get. Do not be swayed by the slick advertisements.

Part 923 - Autosomal DNA is NOT Necessarily Genealogy

Good Day,


I read a very good and concise article recently, posted at NJ.com dated November 2, 2018 by David Klein - "One genealogist's impressions of Ancestry DNA's testing service".

"First, based on what I know about my family, the ethnicity percentages are way off. Please notice I didn't say they were wrong; they might not be. I know that these figures are based on probability and subject to change, but my numbers are skewed more Irish (and British even though I don't know of any British ancestors) and less Italian than what I expected. Suffice it to say I'm more than a bit skeptical about these numbers."

I am a very strong proponent of DNA testing, for the purposes of genealogy. And I can say that I personally am not using DNA testing to find immediate relatives. I am more concerned in learning and discovering about my ancestry.


The corporate tendencies of the larger ancestry, albeit companies and their marketing schemes appear to be a consistent tendency to increase the firm's bottom line.

That being said, and as I volunteer to assist persons to delve into their pasts, I have tested my Y-DNA, mtDNA, and Autosomal DNA. My purpose, is to maintain a comparison of, especially Autosomal DNA results, and to keep abreast of the the plethora of companies in the market. Having tested with this many companies also assists me when helping someone with their family history search and research.

To date I have tested with Family Tree DNA; Ancestry; 23andMe; Living DNA; My Heritage; and National Geographic Geno 2.0. I am currently awaiting the results of CRIGenetics.

Here is a comparative schedule of my test results.

Part 819s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – The Genographic Project 2.0 – Hominid Ancestry

Good Day,

Based on The Genographic Project 2.0 and my results, and if I understand this correctly, I am 94.6% - Homo sapiens, 2.6% - Neanderthal, and 2.8% - Denisovan. All three, according to one theory are descended from the ancient human Homo heidelbergensis. And this is conjecture…


From The Genographic Project “By comparing the genomes of apes, Denisovans, Neanderthals, and modern humans scientists hope to identify DNA segments unique to the different groups.

From the DNA Learning Center I have inserted the Human Origins Family Tree presented.


This presentation does not include the Denisova hominins classification. According to Wikipedia, "this was a previously an unknown species. In March of 2010, scientists announced the discovery of a finger bone fragment..."

And the search and learning continues...

Part 818b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – The Genographic Project 2.0 Results Are In

Good Day,

The pursuit and search of one’s genealogy and ancestry today is availed many, many different tools and methodologies. One such new tool is The Genographic Project 2.0. As I mentioned in my previous Post, Part 817s, I, we are just beginning to plow through the information and details.

Andy has also agreed to participate. The interest is to check out the possible results of his Brunhammer and Doherty genealogy and deep ancestry. His “Who Am I?” results are back.


The information is determined from his entire genome; Andy’s complete set of genetic material, and provide results of both parents’ information. Six generations from both parents are apparent. You can see that Andy’s result breakdown is of three of the nine world regions. The three are: Northern European – 45%; Mediterranean – 36%; and Southwest Asian – 19%. The total is 100%.

Andy’s DNA results, which should be very similar for all his sisters and brothers, are determined in terms of genetic markers that all Brunhammer siblings carry. This is a mixture of both recent (past six generations) and ancient patterns established over thousands of years.

Andy’s first Reference Population is British, of the United Kingdom.


His second Reference Population is German.


Included in Andy’s results is his Hominid Ancestry. (Hominid is a primate of the family Hominidae, of which Homo sapiens, us, is the only surviving species.) These are based from about 60,000 years ago. The results are pertinent to deep, deep ancestry. From The Genographic Project “A 2011 study by Stanford University researchers concluded that many of us carry ancient variants of immune system genes involved in destroying pathogens that arose after we left Africa.


The overall outcomes are the combination of genes, based on one theory, that Neanderthals, Denisovans, and modern human beings are all descended from the ancient human Homo heiderlbergensis. I definitely need to read more regarding this information.

Part 817s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – The Genographic Project 2.0 Results Returned

Good Day,

In my course of search and research of my own genealogy and ancestry I am always checking all possible avenues. My results of The Genographic Project 2.0 have returned. There’s a ton of information I’ve got to wade through and I will be posting my observations and my questions as I progress on A Genealogy Hunt.


In the category “Who Am I?” the above are my results. Accordingly this information is determined from my entire genome, and per the study results, both parents’ information, going back six generations is observable.

As you can see my results break down as follows: North European – 39%; Mediterranean – 37%; Southwest Asian – 19%; and Sub-Saharan African – 4%. Per the information provided The Genographic Project 2.0 can display one’s affiliations with a set of nine world regions. (I will have to find out whether I am excluded from the other five regions.)

My DNA results are compared to the reference populations currently in The Genographic Project database and estimated which of these are the most similar to me in terms of genetic markers that I carry. This is a mixture of both recent (past six generations) and ancient patterns established over thousands of years.

My first Reference Population is German.


My second Reference Population is Tuscan (Italy).


As you can see the designations are based on similar percentages.

And that’s it for this Post. I have a lot of reading to do… as well as, my grey matter is definitely going to have to learn and understand what the hell it all means. My immediate question is "As The Geneographic Project database increases in size, will I see any significant change"? Presently over 559 thousand people have participated.

Part 537rs - Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated DNA Haplogroup Ascendancy Chart

Good Morning,

And a very wet good morning… without air-conditioning good morning to all. The positive thing is that it is overcast and should remain this way all day, and so I cannot complain… much.


With the release of the new Deep Clade results of our Robertson Y-DNA, I have updated the Smith YDNA and mtDNA Ascendancy Chart.

Please note that the close results between the Smith and the Robertson YDNA Haplogroup classifications. Interesting, if I say so myself.

Part 532s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith FTDNA Y-DNA 111 – DYS Values Returned

Greetings,

The first set of the Smith DNA Y-Chromosome Segment (DYS) values have been returned. These are the results of the Smith Family Tree DNA Y-DNA 111 markers tests. I have included all results in the following listing. But in order to understand what you are looking at, I have found some definitions that may help.

Locus – A specific spot in the genome. A variable locus will have several possible alleles. (From Family Tree DNA)

DYS# – DNA Y-Chromosome Segment (DYS): A nomenclature system which assigns DYS numbers to numbers to newly discovered markers. They are the “names” of each marker. (From Family Tree DNA)

Alleles – One of the different forms of a gene that can exist at a single locus. Since mutations in the allele value occur very slowly with time, one should see the same allele value for a male and his great-grandfather for example. (From Family Tree DNA)


The theory and idea is that one should be able to compare one’s DYS values to other individuals to see how closely or distantly one may have shared a common ancestor. The more DYS markers’ alleles match between two individuals, with the same or variation of a similar surname, the greater the probability that the two individuals may share a common ancestor. (But of course, there could be a chance that the two individuals do NOT share a same surname due to some earlier incidence as adoption, name change, etc..)

The supposed example would be that as any immediate Smith male relative who shares the same common ancestor, great-great-great-grandfather James Smith, one would expect that anyone of them would have the similar allele results. And here are the 111 results.

To date I have received notification from Family Tree DNA that there is two matches, Denny and Thomas Seymour whose results may match 63 of my 67 Markers, with a Genetic Distance of 3. This is a fairly close match and does present a great probability of a possible common ancestor. Interpreting the results this may mean that in 20 generations or somewhere in the vicinity of 400 years, or approximately 1611 we could realize a common ancestor.

Now in our case we have a Smith matching against a Seymour… Not possible you say? Most definitely possible. Someone changed the surname. Denny has traced his paternal line to a Richard Seymour who was born approximately 27 January 1605 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. Per the research, Richard Seymour’s father was Robert Seymer who was born in the same location at about 30 November 1573. Further study has revealed that the surname may have also been written as Seamer and Semer. So bottom line, someone could have changed the name to Smith.

A Genetic Distance, as defined by Family Tree DNA - Genetic Distance is the number of differences, or mutations, between two sets of results. A genetic distance of zero means there are no differences in the results being compared against one another, i.e., an exact match. This is the meaning when comparing Y-chromosome DNA or mitochondrial DNA. This is the computed total, from what I understand of the differences be the alleles from two different test participants. In other word if my Smith Locus 94 of DYS #712 scored "20" and the Seymour's Locus 94 of DYS #712 scored "30", the difference between 20 and 30 is equal to a Genetic Difference of 10.

In the current matching, the case with our Smith and the Seymour participants, the Genetic Distance can be written to say that based on the results there is a greater than 99.41% chance that there may be a common ancestor at about 20 generations or around the year 1611, give or take a few years.

The results of the Smith Y-DNA 111 Markers are in. We are now just waiting for the results to the Seymour Y-DNA 111 testing. With the increased information we will be able to see what the Genetic Distance will be calculated.

The first set of Andy’s DNA Y-Chromosome Segment (DYS) values have been returned. These are the results of the Brunhammer Family Tree DNA Y-DNA 111 markers tests. I have included all results in the following listing. But in order to understand what you are looking at, I have found some definitions that may help.


It is this combination of allele results that places the Brunhammer into the Haplogroup I2a2.

Part 515b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – YDNA 111 Test Results – Possible I2a2a or I2a2b Haplogroup

Good Early Morning,

The first test results of the new Family Tree DNA YDNA 111 markers have returned. We have now an extended set of YDNA Marker results for the Brunhammer Family Genealogy.

According to Family Tree DNA, this test which is only for males, provides “results that identify the deep ancestral origins of the paternal line. It includes a panel of 111 Y chromosome Short Tandem Repeat (STR) markers. The large number of markers refine the predicted time period in which two individuals share a common ancestor…

From the results of the markers a haplogroup is determined. From About.com Genealogy, “Haplogroups characterize the early migrations of specific population groups, and therefore, can potentially be used to connect your distant ancestry with a particular geographical region… Haplogroups are assigned letters of the alphabet, and refinements consist of additional and letter combinations…

Andy’s Brunhammer Haplogroup has been confirmed by Family Tree DNA as I2a2. All-things-being-equal this haplogroup classification is very rare. (See the Wikipedia entry.) The highest frequencies of the I2a2 haplogroup showing up can be suggested to around Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Croatia.

Coupled with the most recent YDNA 111 marker testings, we are waiting for the results of the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) L161. You can see, in the above inserted Y-Haplotree that the L161 “branch” is in a light blue. This means that the Family Tree DNA test is in progress. If the test result is negative, that is L161-, this would mean that Andy’s Brunhammer deeper ancestry is more than likely not included in this branch of the YDNA Family Tree.

According to one of the Group Administrators of the Family Tree DNA – Y-Haplgroup 12a Project, he just wrote and said that “Based on your (Andy’s) 111 marker results, we can predict with confidence that you will test L161-. All people in our Dinaric-N, Dinaric-S, and Disles groups have tested L161-.” And we had to look Dinaric and Disles up.

The Dinaric Alps is a mountain range in West Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia, connected with the main Alpine system by the Julian Alps. (Check out Wikipedia’s entry – Dinaric Alps.) This mountain ranges extends for 401 miles (645 kilometers). Disles is another matter. This is a newly-coined word specific to the most recent research of YDNA. From what I read, there seems to have been possible movement, albeit migration, between the Dinaric Alps, Scandinavia, the Scottish Isles, and Ireland.

As relayed by the Group Administrator, “the term Dinaric is not meant to imply that Andy’s (the Brunhammer’s) group originated in the Dinaric Alps, just that is common there. Another place of origin could be in Poland, Belarus, and Russia where the Salvic people originated. The Dinaric DNA type is strongly associated with the Slavic people but it is also found in Hungarians, Germans, Greeks, Italians, etc.” And we keep testing to find further possibilities of the deep ancestry and origins of the Brunhammer Family Line.

And what does all this mean? The Brunhammer YDNA Haplogroup is I2a2. The Tests results, positioning on the Y-Haplotree are:

L21^, M170^, M258^, P19^, P212^, P38^, PS76^, U179^, L68^, M438^, P215^, P37.2^, L178^, M423+, and P41.2-.

The “^” symbol means “Presumed Positive”. The “+” equals “Tested Positive”, and the “-” represents “Tested Negative”. As mentioned above we’re awaiting confirmation of the test results for L161.

My Tangent - My Genealogy Efforts - My Short List

Morning,

Today's a challenge; I'm trying to get myself organized without being too, too organized. There is no point in getting stressed out over not getting something done on time or at least when I schedule it.

AB is well on the road to recovery. Just making sure that the sink doesn't get too filled up with dirty dishes, all meals are on time and with some modicum of nutrition, and the Pack walked regularly, leaves a little time for me. In retrospect, could I have gone into the care-provision industry? Hell no... I'm far too, too self-centered. And what was I thinking about, that many years ago getting a Master's Degree in Organizational Management?

Anyway, with a breather, I thought I would update my genealogy resolutions and continue the never-ending list of my personal projects all in my quest to fill in the limbs of the branches of my Tree. My list of resolutions and projects like my Tree just keeps getting longer and longer.

Here is my short list and where I think I am...

1. Search and research the origins of my GGG-Grandfather James Smith from/to Grenada. The Transcription Project continues. As I mentioned in the last My Tangent this Project had just got considerably larger. I have begun downloading images from the Grenada Registers of Records, Item I, 1785-1786 of FHL [1563320]. To date, the Indexes and 123 pages. I have also started a transcription of an Indenture, beginning on Page 351 of Item 10, 1822-1823 of FHL [1563379].

2. My MS Access Database of microfilms and microfiche that I have created and reviewed is complete. This certainly gives me quick approach to making sure that I do not re-order a microfilm or microfiche from the FHL if not necessary.

3. I have given up, for now, looking for an iPad application that will allow me to hook directly to my PC at home. There is way too much “invisible wave” interference. Plus, it appears that associated data movement charges by my provider certainly can go through the roof. I have found a number of alternate methods using my iPad, Google Docs, and Hot Wire locations. Keeps the expenses down.

4. The updating of Legacy Family 7.5 software is completed. Now I need to understand the wherewithal to uploading it to Ubuntu 11.04. And yes, I have a lot of work to work on my Family data.

5. My Robertson Family Tree is growing bit-by-bit. Thank you to those who have kindly provided new and key information. Recent photographs and documents were received pertaining to my Grandparents Frederick Henry and Madge (née Goodey) Robertson and his parents, my Great-Grandparents Elizabeth Charlotte (née Merrifield) and Alexander Pirie Robertson. Thank you Mother and Helen. I am still open to receive any “old” family photographs and information. Please feel free to contact me.

6. We are searching for any pertinent information regarding my Uncle Stuart Alistair Frederick Robertson's wife, Daphne Joan (née Fuller) Robertson Roberts. Any lead would certainly assist us to acquire Uncle Stuart's RAF service records and papers.

7. Continue my research and discover definitive ancestral lines of my GGG-Grandmother Elizabeth (née Kendal) Parker. The parish records microfilms for the Downham area are just awaiting my search and review.

8. My Family Tree DNA Family Finder and 23andMe results have been returned. I am trying to understand the elements and definitions of the result returns. There is also the issue of the overlap of similarities or lack thereof of the differences between the viewpoints of the two companies. I need to update my DNA listing links to provide easy access to my charts and analyses.

9. Try to understand the concept of 23andMe’s Ancestry Painting and Family Tree DNA Illumina Omnis Express Chromosome Browser.

10. Understand the scope of y-search.org which results in two 64-to-67 YDNA marker matches. My User ID is CJY7M. Both I and my 64-to-67 match have upgraded to the new Family Tree DNA 111 YDNA marker testing. We are both waiting in anticipation to learn if the new data will provide any more cohesive details or eliminate the possibility of a possible common ancestor. The pending items are due back by June 6.

11. The results to the new Family Tree DNA Walk Through the Y test have been returned, I think. 956 Chromat files have been returned. I haven’t got a bloody clue what a Chromat file is.

12. One 61-to-67 match has been returned in the Robertson YDNA results to date. The unique thing about this match is that the match’s surname is also Robertson. I need to make contact in order to ascertain the possibility of a common ancestor. According to the Family Tree DNA TiP (Time Predictor) Report there is a 61.73% probability of the possibility of a shared common ancestor in 12 generations. This increases to an 84.65% probability in 16 generations. Beginning with my generation I have documented data of Robertsons for a total of about 10 generations. A good reference table is found at Family Forest.

13. Continue and organize my research of my July Family line, into Sarlat, Dordogne, France. In progress. I have found a possible series of new birth and death registrations which could take this family line to about 1588.

14. Solve the mystery of GGGG-Grandparents Joseph and Sarah (née Pudney) Goodey. I haven’t even opened the paper files in this area as yet.

17. Commit myself to complete at least 5 of my 22 remaining National Institute For Genealogical Studies courses. I have already completed 32. I keep postponing my start and pick-up date.

Part 498s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – First 23andMe Results Returned – Paternal Haplogroup = R1b1b2a

Morning,

Well the “brain-learnin’” continues. This is an amazing trek trying to pinpoint the origins of my ancestors and my genealogy.

I received the first part of the results from my 23andMe testings. It appears that the results for my X and Y, aka the sex, chromosomes are back.


First of all my Paternal Haplogroup is registering as R1b1b2a. As recorded by 22andMe, R1b1b2a is a subgroup of R1b1b2. R1b1b2 is the most common Haplogroup in Western Europe, where its branches are clustered in various national populations. Per 23andMe, the above map approximates locations of Haplogroup R1b1b2 circa 500 years ago, before the era of intercontinental travel.

The positive factor of this result is that it is the same result and Haplogroup as tested by Family Tree DNA. But this is only the YDNA. I am still awaiting the other results.

This should be the same Haplogroup for all the male Smiths, Landreth-Smiths, Lloydsmiths, Lloyd-Smiths, Malins-Smiths, et al who are descended from ggg-grandfather James Smith of Grenada.

Next the mtDNA and my maternal line Haplogroup, and the Autosomal DNA.
