Part 737b – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1940 High School Graduation – Patricia (née Bulah) McKenna

20 July 2012

Good Day,

This genealogy researcher and avid investigator continues to find connections in the most unobtrusive and discreet way. I am always looking for an iota, a shred of evidence that can connect me with that distant branch on my Family Tree.

This time I travel, electronically to California, to Los Angeles and to Manual Arts High School. Manual Arts High School, according to Wikipedia, was established in 1910 in the middle of bean fields, one-half mile from the nearest bus stop. It was the third school in Los Angeles and is the oldest high school still on its original site in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

I chanced upon the 1940 Senior Class as presented by the Manual Arts High School Yearbook, The Artisan W40. And I discovered on Page 53 Patricia Bulah.

Based on my research and logical deduction, this is second cousin Patricia Bulah, daughter of 1st cousin twice removed Muriel C. (née St. Philippe) Bulah, daughter of great-grandaunt Marie Adèle Céléstine (née July) St. Philippe. Great-Grandaunt Céléstine was one of the younger sisters of great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham. And both were daughters of my gg-grandparents Jean Jacques Alfred and Catherine Cora (née Merle) July.

Here is the Page 53 extracted from The Artisan Winter40, the Manual Arts High School 1940 Yearbook… Ancestry.com provides a database of various school yearbooks from across the United States.

Oh and by the way, I discovered that Frank Capra, Kathryn Grayson, Irving Stone, and Paul Winfield were just a few of the notable alumni of the Manual Arts High School. Another point of interest is that the name of the Class of W’40 at Manual Arts High School was the Mounties, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 466jm – Smith Robertson Genealogy – New Online Gironde Archives - GAEL

10 March 2011

Good day,

Spring has certainly taken over the Tampa Bay area. My first set of Amaryllis is blooming. And the pollen is silently blanketing the cars in the driveway and graciously coating my face and hair each time I exit the front door. “Achoo, achoo”, and Dragon Naturally Speaking keeps asking me to “Please say that again.

And the day begins in my search and research of my genealogy and ancestry.

The Smith-related and Grenada Registers Indenture that I am currently working on and transcribing is 31 pages long. I have completed 21. The scribe has a tight penmanship and there are large smudges to boot. My goal is to finish it by Saturday.

I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my emails this morning.

Annie had sent me the announcement and connection to a new online database “Gironde Archives En Ligne” – “GAEL”. The Department of Gironde in France, has now provided a free database which we immediately found pertinent documents for gg-grandparents Jean Jacques Alfred and Catherine Cora (née Merle) July.

I have not surveyed all the capabilities of GAEL as yet. One topic – “Entrée thématique : Les passeports (1800-1889)” provides a number of hits for both surnames July and Merle.

One such document is the page of the 1860 “POLICE GÉNÉRALE. PASSE-PORT POUR L’INTÉRIEUR.” It is the Interior Passport for gg-grandmother Catherine Cora Merle and her two children, a two-year old son, (great-granduncle Pierre Gustave Henri July), and an eight-month old daughter, (great-grandaunt Marie Amélia Blanche (née July) Poupon). It was issued in Bordeaux the 1st of February 1860 for travel to Gorée in Sénégal. Here is the link to the said page.

Eleven months later, great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née Merle) July was born.

Check out my previous Postings regarding the research and search of my great-grandmother Marie. You can search for previous Postings by entering her name in “Search This Blog” in the right-hand column.

And thank you to Annie for your assistance.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 462s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Possible mtDNA J1b1 Subclade – Abraham, Castex, Charbonnier, Chevalier, Clergeau, Clopath, Emery, July, Merle, Olton, Rénier, Smith, Titus, Vogt…

21 February 2011

Good Afternoon,

ZC just received news from Administration of the J-mtDNA Group at Family Tree DNA.

The classification of Haplogroup J could, based on the results, be restated as J1b1.

“I see that they have classified you as Haplogroup J, but based on a quick review of your HVR1/HVR2 results, I believe you should more properly be classified as J1b1 and thus I have moved you into that subgroup within the project.”

What does this mean to our genealogy and search?

From Wikipedia - “A Haplogroup is a group of similar haplotypes that share a common ancestor with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutation.

The Subclade, J1b1 is “a term used to describe a subgroup of a subgenus or haplogroup.” (Wikipedia)

Here is an updated DNA Pedigree Chart, which does now include the tracing of the possible J1b1 mtDNA lineage.

See my Posts Part 456s, Part 450s, Part 449s, Part 448s, and Part 447s for my preceding discussion of our paternal grandmothers’ mtDNA.

To date our documented paper trail is to gg-grandmother Catherine Cora (née Merle) July who was born in France in 1836 and passed away in French Guiana in 1886. I do know the ggg-grandmother Jeanette Etienette (née Castex) Merle is also a part of this mtDNA lineage but I am yet to discover an physical evidence of her vital records.

The Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS) differences for the HVR1 and HVR2 tests are, respectively: 16069T, 16126C, 16145A, 16172C, 16222T, 16261T, 16519C, and 73G, 242T, 263G, 295T, 315.1C, 462T, 489C. The inserted extract of the J1b1 subclade is from a paper by Mannis van Oven and Manfred Kayser.

To date the related surnames that I can include that may also be recipients (albeit owners) of this mtDNA classification include: Abraham, Castex, Charbonnier, Chevalier, Clergeau, Clopath, Emery, July, Merle, Olton, Rénier, Smith, Titus, Vogt. Please let me know if I have forgotten a surname which may also belong.

The following paragraph was found as an ancestry description of the J1b1 subclade.

J1b1: The mitochondrial haplogroup J contains several sub-lineages. The original haplogroup J originated in the Near East approximately 50,000 years ago. Within Europe, sub-lineages of haplogroup J have distinct and interesting distributions. Haplogroup J1b is found distributed in the Near East and southern Iberia, and may have been part of the original colonization wave of Neolithic settlers moving around the Mediterranean 6000 years ago or perhaps a lineage of Phoenician traders. Within haplogroup J1b, a derivative lineage haplogroup J1b1 has been found in Britain and another sub-lineage detected in Italy. Further research will better establish the relationship of these two geographically distant, yet evolutionarily related, haplogroups. Bryan Sykes in his Seven Daughters of Eve book named this mtDNA haplogroup Jasmine.

(See Charles Kerchner’s MtDNA Haplogroup Descriptions & Information Links).

That's it for now.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 459 – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Am I Bored? – Updates Today

17 February 2011

Good Day,

And I still continue my Indenture Transcription Project in the research for the origins and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. At times this process can become somewhat tedious if not “boring”, especially if there is no apparent glimmer of hint or clue. For this reason, and to feed my insatiable appetite for genealogy research I have some other concurrent family search projects ongoing.

  • I’ve made headway with respects to a possible further location of Verdelais in the Department of Gironde in France following up on the ancestry of my gg-grandmother Catherine Cora (née Merle) July.
  • I have found some possible connections and documentations to my family line of Castex in the 10-Year Tables with respect to my ggg-grandmother Jeanette Etienette (née Castex) Merle.
  • The first YDNA results for my Robertson line have returned. And lo and behold there is an exact Robertson match in the preliminary results for the first set of 12 markers.
  • Microfilms have arrived referencing my search for my Merrifield Line.
  • Work continues in my transcription and translation project of the possible July Family documentations especially those from Sarlat in the Department of Dordogne in France.
  • I have initiated a Family Tree DNA Family Finder study to complement the current Smith YDNA and Robertson et al mtDNA studies and results.
  • I am investigating the mtDNA results referencing the Olton Smith et al lines.
  • Of course, I continue with the Grenada Registers of Records Transcription Project in the search for the origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.
  • And…
And when I do become really bored, there is… Oh and by the by, I am seeing a drastic increase in visitors to A Genealogy Hunt. The average number of visitors has increased up by 100% to at least 40 Visits per day. Not bad for a very small niche blog that doesn’t offering anything but my journal and muses of my thoughts and research.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 458m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Merle Family Line – Verdelais, Gironde, France - Maybe?

16 February 2011

Good Evening,

Today I’ve been working on a couple of branches of my Family Tree… which of course, proves how easily it is to get side-tracked in the realm of genealogy research.

I discovered a post-it note on my desk that had the word “Verdelais” on it. It was in my own hand-writing. My mind was taxed… I remembered that I had had written this at some point when I was doing some ancestry research of my July and Merle lines.

Using Google Maps, I discovered that Verdelais is about 43.7 km, 27 miles, south-east from Bordeaux in the Department of Gironde, in France.

I logged on to the Archives Départmentales, État civil de la Gironde. I decided to search out Verdelais and discovered two possible collections: Aubiac-et-Verdelais and Verdelais. The information provided

Translated –

Information - Administrative history: During the Revolution, the parish of Saint-Maurice of Aubiac and its annex, Our Lady of Verdelais form the commune of Aubiac-and-Verdelais. In 1890, Aubiac-and-Verdelais becomes Verdelais.

The evidence provided online are the 10-Year Tables Registers with Marriage, Birth, and Death registrations. From what I can appreciate, after a quick perusal, is that there are a number of Merle-related documents. All-things-being-equal, and I can guarantee the facts as yet, but it would appear that there may be some connections to gg-grandmother Catherine Cora (née Merle) July’s paternal ancestors.

As I wrote on December 8, my number 10 Resolution was “Continue and organize my research of my July Family Line, into Sarlat, Dordogne, France.” This new information would be a continuation and sub-set of this Resolution. Now I have to get the Civil and Parish Registers of the Verdelais area in an attempt to see if my thought process may have some justification.

And I continue,

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 456s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - DNA Pedigree - New Ancestry Chart

13 February 2011

Morning,

Last night I thought that I would reproduce an Ascendancy Chart which incorporates relevant and associated DNA information. There is so much that I need to learn, (self-imposed), regarding my genetic genealogy. A fair reference work, Genetic Genealogy, is available on Wikipedia.

In my work I thought that I would like to have a visual representation of genetic pedigree or my ancestry and bloodline. My Chart simply provides the YDNA - R1b1b2a, and mtDNA - H1a1 and J1b, Haplogroup designations of my ancestors.

Oxford Dictionaries defines bloodline as “a set of ancestors or line of descent of an important person.” My question, “Do you have to be an important person to have a bloodline?”, as according to Oxford Dictionaries. (I'll reserve my comments.)

I stumbled upon, in my research a website, Modern Software Experience, by Tamara Jones, which is right up my alley. Check out the page “What is genealogy?

And thank you Megan Smolenyak for the brief moment of your time yesterday in Largo. Yes, I do have a triple whammy – The most common name in the English Language, Smith… The most common of European YDNA haplogroup – R1b1b2a, and one of the most common of mtDNA classifications – H1a1.

And so I continue to search for my most common, "important" person in my ancestry. Hah!

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 450s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Our mtDNA Results Lean To J1b

07 February 2011

Afternoon,

Based on ZC’s present results, and the immediate differences results from the Cambridge Reference Sequence, (see Parts 448s and 449s), it may be possible to infer that the sequence may be classified as J1b. J1b is a subclade of the Haplogroup J.

I have highlighted the HVR1 results in the inserted 2004 Schematic Tree for European mtDNA Variation. This representation is from the thesis by Piia Serk, from the University of Tartu, in Estonia.

In my research of my genealogy and ancestry I am constantly “drilling-down” to locate more and more information. As discussed, my father’s maternal line mtDNA resulted in a J Haplogoup classification. This means that my father, Frederick Kenneth Lloyd Smith received his mtDNA from his mother, grandmother Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith (and Mann). She received hers from her mother, my great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham who in turn received hers from her mother, my great-great-grandmother Catherine Cora (née Merle) July.

My search and research, at presents stops at my great-great-great-grandmother Jeannette Etienette (née Castex) Merle. I have not found any information on my Castex line as I have not delved into those records as yet. All-things-being-equal those records and documents could begin in the vicinity of Bordeaux, in Gironde, France.

A geographic line of the passage of these J-mtDNA results would be from Bordeaux, France to Sénégal in West Africa, to Georgetown in British Guiana (now Guyana), to St. George, in Grenada. Other lines of transfer from Bordeaux to Sénégal, to Cayenne in French Guiana, to Paris and Brittany, France as well as from British Guiana to San Diego, in California, USA.

To date, the individuals in our Family Tree with the surnames who may be recipients of this J-mtDNA include: Abraham, Castex, Charbonnier, Chevalier, Clergeau, Clopath, Emery, July, Merle, Olton, Rénier, Smith, Titus, and Vogt.

Quite a bit to assimilate at one given time… but I’m getting there.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 449s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Grandmothers Abraham (J) and Goodey (H1a1) mtDNA Results

06 February 2011

Morning,

It is amazing what information and data is available today online. At times I wonder if the "grey matter" between my ears will either explode or simply turn into mush... but I am enthralled at times at the amount, whether good or bad, is readily available and accessible. In my further research of my ancestors and the search for my genealogy I am continually trying to understand as much and everything that I possibly can.

With the good news, that my father's maternal mtDNA is classified as J, and whereas my own maternal mtDNA is documented as H1a1, I have determined to find out as much as I can about mtDNA. (Please be assured that I DO NOT account for all that I discover online and on the Internet as gospel truth.) The above-inserted image if a model of human migration based on Mitochondrial DNA from Familypedia.

Here is a question. How does the attributes of one’s grandmothers’ mtDNA influence a person’s makeup and being? My grandmothers were Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith and Mann, J-mtDNA, and Madge (née Goodey) Robertson, H1a1-mtDNA.

Accordingly mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA spans 16,569 DNA building blocks. This represents just a fraction of the total DNA in cells. The mtDNA testing done Family Tree DNA, that is the three, HVR1, HVR2, and CR Reference Sequence tests, tests all 16569 Positions against the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS). The results of the each test are the recorded differences against the CRS. The CRS is NOT a record of the earliest human mtDNA. It appears to be the sequence conducted in the 1970s “of the mitochondrial genome of one individual of European descent” which is used as the comparative base point. (See Wikipedia – Cambridge Reference Sequence).

The immediate differences results from the Cambridge Reference Sequence are as follows:

For the Smith, Abraham, July, Merle, Castex line – J-mtDNA Haplogroup

HVR1 – 16069T; 16126C; 16145A; 16172C; 16222T; 16261T; and 16519C

HVR2 – 73G; 242T; 263G; 295T; 315.1C; 462T; and 489C

For the Smith, Robertson, Goodey, Crossley, Parker, Kendal line – H1a1-mtDNA Haplogroup

HVR1 – 16162G; 16209C; and 16519C

HVR2 – 73G; 263G; and 315.1C

CR – 750G; 1438G; 3010A; 4639C; 4769G; 6365C; 8860G; 10993A; and 15326G

This information and data can be somewhat prodigious to learn and absorb. The following YouTube clip from the National Geographic Genographic Project helps me to understand a wee bit of my J-mtDNA ancestry.

Regards, and enjoy the Super Bowl,

Jim

Part 448s – Smith Genealogy – J-mtDNA Results Again - Castex, Merle, Clergeau, Rénier, Chevalier, Clopath, Charbonnier

05 February 2011

Morning,

In the pursuit of our genealogy, the J-mtDNA results, following up on Part 447s , are critical in determining a possible match which could lead to the discovery of a most common ancestor. Of the FamilyTree DNA accessible and open records, ZC’s mt-DNA results matched 13 High Resolution (HVR1 + HVR2) sets.

To date we have received four responses. All-things-being-equal there could be an ancestor-in-common in any one of these four matches but the documentary and paper trails currently do not provide the clues. Still nine more returned replies are in the works… hopefully.

The following are ZC’s J-Haplogroup differences relative to the Cambridge Reference Sequence (CRS). These are the differences that are used to match to possible corresponding others. A match means a possible connection. Per FamilyTree DNA, "A match on HVR1 and HVR2 has a 50% chance of a common ancestor within twenty-eight generations. That is about 700 years."

The immediate differences results from the Cambridge Reference Sequence are as follows:

HVR1 – 16069T; 16126C; 16145A; 16172C; 16222T; 16261T; and 16519C

HVR2 – 73G; 242T; 263G; 295T; 315.1C; 462T; and 489C

Based on the current results, and our documentation and paper trail we are able to get back on our grandmother Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith/Mann’s maternal line to her great-grandmother, our great-great-great-grandmother Jeannette Etienette (née Castex) Merle. That is about back to, give-or-take a couple of years, 1810. That’s Two Centuries… of paper trails. There’s still quite a bit of searching left to be done…

But in the mean-time we can add some additional family members to this pool of J-mtDNA results. Yann and his siblings are also direct descendants of great-great-grandmother Catherine Cora (née Merle) July. Their great-grandmother Marie Eugéne Berthe (née July) Clergeau and Rénier was a younger sister to my great-grandmother Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham.

Based on the mtDNA theory and application daughters and their children should also carry the J-mtDNA. This will add surnames, from the connected families – Castex, Merle, Clergeau, Rénier, Chevalier, Clopath, and Charbonnier.

The list of surnames included in this J-mtDNA grouping now includes - Abraham, Castex, Charbonnier, Chevalier, Clergeau, Clopath, Emery, July, Merle, Olton, Rénier, Smith, Titus, and Vogt.

A lot of food for thought,

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 447s – Smith Genealogy – mtDNA Results – Olton, Smith, Abraham, July, Merle, Castex

02 February 2011

Greetings,

Great news this morning, and thank you Miss Z.

Today we have another piece of our family puzzle in place. Grandmother Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith (and Mann) identifies as Jasmine, one of the seven daughters of Eve. (See The Seven Daughters of Eve, 2001, by Bryan Sykes.)

In the search for the answers to our genealogy and ancestral origins, we have received notice that our Smith, Abraham, July, Merle, and Castex lines is of the J Haplogroup. This is the preliminary result of the mtDNA testing from Family Tree DNA.

From Eupedia.com, Haplogroup J originated in the Middle East 45,000 years (ago), making it one of the oldest mitochondrial haplogroups in Europe and the Middle East. During the Neolithic Era, that is, 8,000 to 10,000 years or so ago, this J Haplogroup, which appears to have been previously derived and lived in the Near East or Caucasus, may have been associated with the spread of farming and herding in Europe. (See Wikipedia.)

This news means that Zoë, Toni, David, Paul, Leigh, Julie, Andrew, Sophia, Rachel, Jeffrey, and Cailey all share the same mtDNA. My father Frederick Kenneth Lloyd Smith, my aunt Cécile Esme (née Smith) Olton, and their brother, my uncle, Desmond Lloyd Smith shared the same mtDNA as their mother, grandmother Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith (and Mann). It is their maternal mitochondrial DNA.

Beginning with Grandmother Jeanne, I have constructed a quick ancestry of my grandmothers who all should have had the same mtDNA.
  • Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith/Mann – My grandmother – Born circa 1890, Georgetown, British Guiana; Died – circa 1967, Georgetown, British Guiana
  • Catherine Marie Antoinette (née July) Abraham – My great-grandmother – Born 2 Jan, Île de Gorée, Sénégal; Died – 25 Jan 1940, San Diego, California, USA
  • Catherine Cora (née Merle) July – My great-great-grandmother – Born 2 Nov 1836, Bordeaux, Gironde, France; Died – 13 Sep 1886, Cayenne, French Guiana
  • Jeanette Etienette/Elinore (née Castex) Merle – My great-great-great-grandmother – Born – unknown, France; Died – unknown
Stay-tuned for more details and results as I receive them.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent – Crossed Systems, The Cloud, and Updated July Descendant Charts

14 December 2010

Good morning,

As I mentioned time and time again, this Blog is a catch-all of the notes of my work and research in the search of my genealogy and ancestors. I have been also asked as to whether it is a lot of work maintaining A Genealogy Hunt. The simple answer… Yes.

But there is a self-serving benefit to me; I am able to contain the majority of my work in one place, on the Blog. I can also access this Blog from any operating computer system with almost any operating system. I do work with Microsoft Windows, Linux Ubuntu, and Apple systems. It is convenient… and I am constantly looking for ways to cross-over from system-to-system-to-system.

My obsession is the research and I am working to try to ensure that I have my data and information readily available at any given moment. I might be saving the trees and I certainly am saving wear and tear on my back, not having to lug around multiple and cumbersome binders and reams of paper. Thanks be for the Information Revolution. This also includes immediate, well almost immediate access to online databases, subscriptions and memberships. And now there is… The Cloud, aka the Internet. From Wikipedia – “The fundamental concept of cloud computing is that the computing is ‘in the cloud’ i.e. that the processing (and the related data) is not specified, known or the same place(s).” I thought that I was doing that… I think, sort of.

In the meantime, I found that my July Descendant Chart was becoming too, too crowded to fit in one image. I have therefore split the Descendancy into two visuals/images. July Descendant Chart I begins with gggggg-grandfather Pierre Jullie (aka July) and follows through to his great-grandson, my great-great-grandfather Jean François July. July Descendant Chart II starts at gg-grandfather Jean François July and then continues to my father, his great-great-great grandson Frederick Kenneth Lloyd Smith. (I hope I got the greats and the great-greats right.)

Here are the two new Charts. I will also be adding them to the top pull-down menu under the label “Smith”.

Enjoy… I certainly am.

Jim

Bonjour,

The Cloud, alias l'Internet.

Part 418j – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated July Descendant Chart – 10, Maybe 11, New Ancestors

10 December 2010

Early Morning,

And I’ve been somewhat busy yesterday and today. No, I haven’t been doing anything else… just more research and search of my genealogy and ancestry.

This time it’s been about my July Family line… and I seem to have stumbled upon a motherload of data and documentation. This information and documentary registration is from various Registers of the Sainte Marie Parish in Sarlat in Dordogne, in France. Note the different spellings of the July surname.

This is the number 10 of my genealogy to-do’s in My Tangent of December 8, 2010. I have updated my July Family Descendant Chart with this preliminary information.

All newly added ancestors are highlighted in red. There are 10, maybe 11, new ancestors, including my gggg-grandparents Pierre and Marguerite July. I will be presenting and posting the registrations in subsequent Posting on A Genealogy Hunt, so stay tuned.

Please also note that this information is preliminary as I have downloaded images of pages of the individual Registrations and Index from the Sainte Marie Parish Registers. The Registers have all been recorded on microfilm available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

All comments, questions, and ideas are welcomed. Also any assistance in the forth-coming transcription work – from the original French script – and translation from French to English is always invited.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bon chance,

Part 396m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated Merle Descendant Chart – More Ancestors

22 October 2010

Early morning,

This search of the genealogy of my Merle Family line has been an education to say the least. The discoveries have been assorted, and I’m sure there are at least a number more ancestral candidates just waiting around the corner.

As always, I try to keep up with a visual representation of my work. This newly updated chart includes three new half-brothers to ggg-grandfather Jean-Baptiste Merle. Please be aware that neither their stories nor my search ends here. There is still much more to uncover.

I am a wee bit confused as to the naming scheme of his children that gggg-grandfather Jean Merle had in mind. Seven sons; two names – Jean and Pierre. It will certainly be interesting to learn the complete story.

And then there is the mystery of gggg-granduncle Jean Merle. Is he gggg-grandfather Jean’s brother? Why does he have the same name? Have I missed something somewhere in my search? Please note that this work and research is a continuous work in progress. Nothing as far as my knowledge is static. As new information and data is presented, which is more detailed and more correct than the original there will always be change.

Stay tuned for the next episode.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bon chance,

Part 395m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1794 Jean Merle – Birth

21 October 2010

Afternoon,

I just learned that gggg-grandfather Jean Merle, the Cooper did not sign this 1794 Acte de Naissance, Birth Certificate for the registration of his son, ggg-granduncle Jean. But another Jean Merle did. That’s right, another Jean Merle… who was also a Cooper. Don’t you just love genealogy? This certainly isn’t a puzzle one can buy in a toy or hobby shop that comes neatly packaged in a box with 1,000 pieces.

From the registration “assistée de Jean Merle, aîné oncle Paternel de L’Enfant, tonnelier”, and translated “assisted by Jean Merle, elder paternal uncle of the child, cooper,” at this point in time of my research I cannot fathom who this Jean Merle is. All I can say is that he is most definitely the uncle of ggg-granduncle Jean and possibly the brother to gggg-grandfather Jean Merle. Is he my gggg-granduncle as well? Maybe…

This new Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration is of ggg-granduncle Jean Merle, son of Jean Merle and his first wife, Jeanne. And this time her maiden name is spelled “Ozereau”. (Again, phonetically, it is close to the two other variations “Auzerel” and “Ozerel”.)

The date of the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration is “Le six Floréal l’an deux Republicain”. From my calculation this converts to 25 April 1794. The registrations records that ggg-granduncle Jean was “Est Née hier à quatre heures du Matin”, that is, “born yesterday at four in the morning.” That being said, it appears that he was born at 4:00 am on 24 April 1794, and in the French Republic vernacular, on the day of the “Rossignol” or Nightengale.

Here are the images of the Index and the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registation downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1647065].

This is the number eight child that I have found for gggg-grandfather Jean Merle. And I now know that there are at least two signers of the actes de naissance, birth registrations, gggg-grandfather Jean Merle and possibly, gggg-granduncle Jean Merle. See Part 387m for discussion of the eight signatures.

And now comes the new discovery. This new gggg-granduncle, Jean Merle is from Floriac; “habitante de Floirac”. From the map I’ve found that the area of Floriac is possibly a suburb on the southeast border of the city proper of Bordeaux.

The search continues. Who is gggg-granduncle Jean Merle? Are there more Merles in Floriac? And…

Bon après-midi,

Part 394m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1797 Pierre Merle - Birth

20 October 2010

Evening,

And now I move to 1798. To date, in the search of my direct and collateral Merle lines, my direct line genealogy is to my ggg-grandfather Jean-Baptiste Merle and his parents, my gggg-grandparents Jean and Marguerite (née Pepin) Merle.

The definition, from the 1913 Webster Dictionary, Collateral (in Genealogy) is – “Descending from the same stock or ancestor, but not in the same line or branch or one from the other; opposed to lineal. Note: Lineal descendants proceed one from another in a direct line; collateral relations spring from a common ancestor, but from different branches of that common strips or stock. Thus the children of brothers are collateral relations, having different fathers, but a common grandfather. – Blackstone.

GGG-grandfather Jean-Baptiste Merle’s seven siblings are my collateral ancestors. Our common ancestor is their father, my gggg-grandfather Jean Merle.

I was able to get copies of the Index and the actual Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration of the seventh sibling, ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle, from the Civil Register. Please be aware that this is the second ggg-granduncle Pierre; and both Pierres’ parents are gggg-grandfather Jean Merle and his first wife, Jeanne Auzerel. The two were born in 1797 and 1804, respectively.

The following are the images of both as downloaded the microfilm FHL [1647077].

Working on the conversion of the date of the Acte de Naissance “le premiere Frimaire de l’an six de la republique francaise une et indivisible” or 1st Frimaire, Year 6, I have calculated the date of registration as 21 November 1797. The birth date of ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle works out to be 20 November 1797. Accordingly this is the 30th of Brumaire, Year 6 the preceding month; and the name of the day “Rouleau” or Roller. (See the above inserted image.)

Also there may be a wee bit of confusion of the actual date of the acte de naissance. I transcribe the year as “l’an six de la republique”, and translate “year 6 of the Republic”. When I use the conversion calculator at Wikipediale premiere Frimaire de l’an six” converts to 21 November 1797. But there is another conflict. Per the image from the microfilm FHL [1647077] you notice that the year of 1798 is a part of the left-hand label. All-things-being-equal I will go by the actual date recorded in the acte de naissance. An important note is that the Republic year format did NOT start on January 1. Year 6 began on 22 September 1797. And you know what this means. I now have to go back and re-check the dates I have converted for the younger brothers and sister.

One more set of documents is in the pipeline for the eldest brother. Just wait until you see/read what his
name was.

I’ll be back.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bonsoir,

Bon chance,

Part 393m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Update – 1800 Birth Registration – GGG-Granduncle Jean Merle

Afternoon,

Working in partnership certainly eliminates the feeling of “solitude” traipsing the leads and clues, following the reams of documentation of one’s genealogy. The search and research for one’s ancestors certainly reduces the element of “alone-ness” when working together, even if one researcher is in west-central Florida, and the other is in west-central France. Oh, and by-the-by, the distance is just over 4,500 miles or 7,300 kms.

Thanks to Yann he has forwarded his efforts at transcribing the 1800 Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration for our ggg-granduncle Jean Merle.

Bon après-midi,

Part 392m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1800 Jean Merle - Birth

19 October 2010

Afternoon,

The next set of documents that I have found in the search for my genealogy and re-creation of my Family Tree, are those specific to the 1800 acte de naissance, birth registration of ggg-granduncle Jean Merle. As I explained in my previous Posting, Part 391m, my pursuit of my Merle ancestors continues to get more and more confusing.

In this case, and based on the documents that I have provided up to this point, gggg-grandfather Jean Merle has now, including this son, Jean, two other sons named Jean and one named Jean-Baptiste. (I wonder if there may be some connection to George Foreman?)

The birth of this son, ggg-granduncle Jean Merle was registered civically on the 18th of Floréal in the 8th year of the Republic. The registration took place at Bordeaux. The converted date is 8 May 1800.

From my search I cannot find a Ten-Year Tables, Tables Décennale for the year 1800. Per the online documents as provided by the Departmental Archives of Gironde there is a note that indicates that the Tables begin in 1803. (See the above inserted image.)

I was able to get copies of the Index and the actual Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration from the Civil Register. The following are the images of both as downloaded the microfilm FHL [1647083].

All-things-being-equal this ggg-granduncle Jean Merle was born 7 May 1800. But there is a difference in the spelling of the surname of his mother, Jeanne Ozerel. From the 1804 Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration of ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle, his mother’s name is recorded as Jeanne Auzerel, see Part 389m. Having taught phonetics many moons ago, I would chance to say that this is the same person and the difference would be only in the spelling and writing of the scribe.

Oh and by the way, the address provided on both the 1800 and the 1804 Actes de Naissance, Birth Registrations are the same; 44 Rue St. Joseph, in Bordeaux. The conclusion – the same parents, gggg-grandfather Jean Merle and his first wife Jeanne Auzerel aka Jeanne Ozereal.

And now on to the next documents referencing the next two, and elder brothers.

Enjoy,

Bon après-midi,

L'enregistrement a eu lieu à Bordeaux.

Bon chance,

Jim.

Part 391m - Smith Robertson Genealogy - The Confusion Of the Merle Search

18 October 2010

Good Early Evening,

The Merle Family gets very confusing.

There are three more sons to add... These will follow in my subsequent Postings.  From what I have found so far gggg-grandfather Jean Merle and his first wife Jeanne Auzerel, aka Ozerel, aka Ozereau did have four sons.

GGGG-grandfather Jean Merle and his second wife, Marguerite Pepin had four children. Again this is what I have found at this point. They had three sons and a daughter.

The birth of ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle was registered the 16th day of Germinal in the 12th year of the Republic.

The marriage of gggg-grandfather Jean Merle to gggg-grandmother Marguerite Pepin was registered on the 29th day of Prairial also in the 12th year of the Republic. That was about 73 days after the registration of the birth of ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle.

My thought, without documentary proof, is that gggg-grandfather Jean Merle’s first wife, Jeanne (née Auzerel) may have passed away sometime between giving birth to ggg-granduncle Pierre or just thereafter.

It would not surprise me that gggg-grandfather Jean’s immediate reaction, being a father with a baby and at least some other small children, was to find a mother to take care of his children. This may suffice as reasoning why there was not a child born to him and his new wife, gggg-grandmother Marguerite (née Pepin) until at least one and a half years later, following their marriage.

This is my preliminary summation based on the logic of the dates of the events and of the similarities in the signatures, see Part 387m from each of the eight birth registrations, and the third fact is that all recorded occupations for gggg-grandfather Jean Merle are that of "tonnelier", a cooper.

I could be on another planet.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bonsoir,

Bon chance,

Jim

Part 390m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated Merle Descendant Chart – 4 New Ancestors

17 October 2010

Evening,

As I’ve always said and written before I am an extremely visual person. I need to see a picture of my Family Tree; especially of that branch of my genealogy that I am working on.

And in this case it is my Merle bough. It is so much easier for me to see a Descendant Chart or at least some sort of diagram that present a very quick picture. (It is in part why I really like GenoPro.) My most recent update to the Merle Descendant Chart was almost a week ago, see Part 384m, and since that point I have added five definitive new, albeit old, ancestors.

Following up from my last update, I have added, in red, another ggg-granduncle Jean, another elder brother to ggg-grandfather Jean-Baptiste. This ggg-granduncle Jean, who was born 27 October 1806, was just over a year older than his other brother, ggg-granduncle Jean who was born 8 November 1807.

Presently I do not have any explanation as to why both of the names are the same. Three immediate possibilities come to mind:
  1. GGG-Granduncle Jean, born 27 October 1806 may have passed away in infancy, before the birth of his brother, ggg-granduncle Jean, born 8 November 1807, or
  2. The Civil Registration does not have the complete names of the two Jeans, or
  3. The naming of a male child, in this case Jean may have been an ecclesiastical tradition.
I have added the name and symbols for Jean Auzerel gggg-grandfather Jean Merle’s wife before he married gggg-grandmother Marguerite (née Pepin). I do not have any explanation, at this point in time, as to what did happen to Jean Auzerel, but I will keep looking.

Also added in, born 5 April 1804 is ggg-granduncle Pierre Merle. He would have been all-things-being-equal, half-brother to ggg-grandfather Jean-Baptiste. And as ggg-granduncle Pierre’s Godmother is entered as Jeanne Merle I am including her, as possibly as sister to gggg-grandfather Jean Merle. This is my guess, and for that reason I have included her symbol in the Descendant Chart connected by a red line.

In this update I have included an exact birth date, on the Chart, if I have it on file. For your information the code in red is the associated Posting and Part number found on my site.

I can also report that I have just stumbled on four more Merles. I will be working on that documentation next. Stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bonsoir,

Bon chance,

Jim
