Part 655s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - 1804 Robert Smith - Saint Patrick's Parish, Grenada

23 March 2012

Good Day,

Well I jumped the gun, in my last posting when I wrote that I would be moving on to Item 5 in my search for Smith-related Documents. According to the Index in the Grenada Registers of Records there are no Smiths in that Register.

This is only based on the Index which typically provides a quick summary of the primary Parties concerned with and included in the Indenture. All-things-being-equal there could be mentioned made of the surname Smith in the body of each and any of the pages in this specific Register.

The first part of my Transcription Project in my search for the origin and possible genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith is to cross-reference all the Indexes through the years 1764 to about 1850. My next stage will be to peruse the actual Documents in the Registers to see if I can identify any Smith. And I will only need another 266 years on this planet to complete that task. Hah!

And so on to Item 6.

This first Document dated 1 May 1804 is a contract between "John Campbell the Elder, Alexander Campbell, Alexander Campbell the Younger, and Donald Maclachlan of Glasgow in North Britain Merchants and Partners (carrying on Trade under the firm of “John Campbell Senior and Company” of the one Part and Robert Smith of Basinghall Street in the City of London Gentleman, a Trustee named and appointed by and on the part the thesaid John Campbell the Elder of the other Part".

As far as my research and search has taken me I have not found any viable link between Roger Smith and ggg-grandfather James Smith. I have come across the name Roger Smith, and of Basinghall Street, who may have been a lawyer and attorney in the City of London.

From the 1899 publication The Regality Club -

This family of Campbells deserves some mention John Campbell Senior was a son of Alexander Campbell a cadet of Kinloch and a captain in the Black Watch and like his brothers Mungo of Kailzie and Colin of Park John Campbell was in the West India trade Like them also he found it profitable and was thus enabled to acquire the estate of Morriston as well as the steading in Buchanan Street He was founder of the very respectable West India house of John Campbell Senior & Co and the history of his family in Glasgow covers the period of the prosperity of that trade in the city for like many others when they had made their fortune in Glasgow the Campbells left it for the serener air of the county
The Regality Club, Third Series. James Macelhose and Sons,
Publishers to the University of Glasgow; 1899.

Here are the images of Pages 63 through and including 67.

And my transcription. I have attempted to read and transcribe the names of the persons, who were listed in the included Schedule, but at times there may be some discrepancies as to what I perceive his or her name may have been.

Part 654s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1803 Gavin Smith – St. George, Grenada – A Diagram of Property

19 March 2012

Good Day,

And just for any of you who may have thought that I had gone missing in my work of my Transcription Project of all Smith-related Indentures from the Grenada Registers of Records… No such deal!

Believe it or not I took a bit of a respite from the search for the genealogy and origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. I have been preoccupied, with my quilting partner Andy, getting our quilt exhibit portfolio, Evolution together and ready for the upcoming MQX East 2012 Show to be held in April in Providence, Rhode Island. Just a small break… and almost all the work is all done.

And so I continue now with my Transcription Project.

This next 1803 Document from the Grenada Register of Records is a continuation of the sale of property between Samuel Bosanquet and Jacob Bosanquet and Gavin Smith. The nice thing about this document is that a diagram of the actual property borders and boundaries is included in the Indenture. I do not have to check out with modern maps to understand the specifications. The Diagram is the one inserted above.

This Document is a continuation of and follows the contract transcription work from Part 642s.

Here are the images of Pages 377 through and including 380. They are downloaded from Item 4 of the FHL microfilm [1563378].

And my transcription –

Part 653am – Smith McCullogh Genealogy – 1801 Marriage Registration – GGGG-Grandparents Thomas and Mary (née Marsingate) Aldridge

06 March 2012

Good Day,

Following up from the transcription of the Births and/or Christening Registers of St. John and St. Martin in Beverley, Yorkshire, England, see Part 651a, I thought I would check to see if there may be the equivalent of a Marriage Register.

I never know what direction I may be headed or which path I will follow in this Genealogy thing and quest. And sure enough I located a microfiche which displays the Computer Printout of the transcribed work of the Marriage Registers for Beverley, St. John and St. Martin BTS, Yorks, Eng 1713 to 1837. This microfiche is FHL [6910854].

Following the information, as provided on the Births and Christenings Registers transcription, that the same parents of the 12 Aldridge children/offspring were Thomas Aldridge and Mary, I discovered a 1 Jun 1801 Thomas Aldridge and Mary Marsingate entry.

Using my iPhone I was able to take a copy of the Computer Printout and download the page image. Here is the adjusted image.

My transcription –

Beverley, St. John And St. Martin BTS, Yorks, Eng 1713 To 1837

Marriages

Surname – Aldridge
Marr.(iage) Date – 1 Jun 1801
Given Name – Thomas
Rel(ationship) – H
Spouse/Parents – Mary Marsingate
Ages –

There are two other Aldridge Marriages registrations: 31 Jul 1797 – Hannah Aldridge and Thomas Crabtree; and 24 Aug 1809 – John Aldridge and Mary Robinson. My immediate thought is that there may be a filial relationship between Hannah and John to gggg-grandfather Thomas Aldridge.

There are no earlier indicated Aldridge Marriages that could be construed as a possible parental connection to gggg-grandfather Thomas. All-things-being-equal, the thought is conceivable that gggg-grandfather Thomas’ parents came to Beverley from elsewhere. On the Birth and Christening Register there is a listing for one Thomas Aldridge, son of Thomas Aldridge dated 17 January 1779. (See Part 651a.) Could this be the correct association? Need to check that out.

And now to continue my search and research.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 652acm – Smith McCullogh Genealogy – Three New Descendant Charts – McCullogh, Aldridge, and Christie

04 March 2012

Burrowed in my house on this gorgeous breezy, albeit windy day, in sunny Tampa, I am closeting myself away from the floating, yellow microbes of the latest pollen assault. I feel claustrophobic, but my eyes, my nose, and my throat, and my diaphragm sort-of thank me for the consideration.

So what do I do cooped up, sans air frais… I attack my PC with the gusto of a genealogy search and rescue mission.

As promised, previously, and due to the expansion of the McCullogh/Aldridge/Christie Descendant Chart I have attempted to re-created three separate new and singular Family Line Charts…

McCullogh Descendant Chart

Aldridge Descendant Chart

Christie Descendant Chart

These should now all be able to be accessed under the top McCullogh label, just under the “t” in the A Genealogy Hunt title at the top of each page.

I am now working on a Trefry Descendant Chart which should expand JK’s maternal line and lineage.

Stay tuned,

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 651a – Smith McCullogh Genealogy – GGGG-Grandparents Thomas and Mary Aldridge – 12 Children

03 March 2012

Good Day,

YES, the pollen count is high… Just ask my eyes, ask my nose. Deadened ears by sonic-choos. See the boxes of Kleenex in every room of this house. And two more months of this cranial hell.

Today I continue my focus on the genealogy and construction of the ancestry of the Aldridge Family line.

Following the lead from the 1851 England Census, see Part 650a,on which it is enumerated that JK’s great-great-great-grandfather Thomas Aldridge was born in “Yorkshire Beverly”. I discovered a microfiche, FHL [6910853] with included extractions from microfilm copies of Bishop’s Transcripts from microfilms FHL [0919386-0919387; 0919421 Item 1].

Here is a generation of my updated McCullogh / Aldridge / Christie Descendant Chart. Shortly, and due to the development and expansion of data and information, I may have to sub-divide the one into multiple Charts.

All-things-being-equal there are three Thomas Aldridges; a father, and two sons christened 29 Sep 1809 and 24 Jun 1815, respectively. There are actually a total of 12 children attributed to the parents, gggg-grandparents Thomas and Mary Aldridge. As two of the sons are both named Thomas I would venture a guess, based on my research experience, that the elder Thomas may have passed away in infancy, and that the second Thomas was given the name Thomas in his stead. The second Thomas is who I believe may be JK’s ggg-grandfather.

It can be deduced that JK’s gggg-grandparents may have been Thomas and Mary Aldridge, the identified parents of the 12 Aldridge children.

I have inserted a downloaded image of the printout of the Beverley, Yorks. St. John and St. Martin Christenings, Page 10.

Note that gggg-grandmother Mary's maiden surname may have be Marsingate. Stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent - Panic; Electronic Tools

02 March 2012

Good Day,

Today, in this day and age, I realized how electronically vulnerable I really am. And for anyone who does work on genealogy, of which the data files and folders become as precious gold, this can become a serious matter.

In my car, on a quick trip to my PC experts at Citrus Computers here in Tampa, I had to take in my desktop to get it tweaked, fixed and a new “case-applied”. My notebook mouse and cursor functionalities had seized up when I was updating my anti-virus software Kaspersky 2012. Further, the battery was draining on both my iPad and iPhone. Now realize that I backup up my desktop to another hard drive and at a distance via Carbonite. My notebook is a pure backup and my iPad is a “show and tell” tool.

But I was pinning when I realized that I would not have my means, any means of electronic communications and/or work tools. I picked up all my gizmos, and on the trip home I immediately thought “What would I do if I was in a new car accident?” And I subsequently began to think, not of my physical corps, but of my electronic Avatars. How I would survive in my created world without any electronic tool for my means of communications? Heavens forbid I would have to talk orally, and with the vocal chords as found in my upper throat.

Well, everything is back in place, now. Everything is connected and working, backed-up and protected.

Just something to think about… Oh and yeah, thanks to the guys at Citrus Computers.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent - Written In The Stars? - And Something To Really Think About

01 March 2012

Good Day,

Is this something written in the stars?

Here is the weirdest thing I have come across in my short sojourn and workings of this my obsession of genealogy.

It is possible that my son’s ggg-grandfather John Robertson, from his father’s maternal line's and his ggg-grandfather Thomas Aldridge, from his mother’s paternal line's families may have known or at least passed by each other at the regular services at the now no longer existing St. Peter’s Church in Liverpool.

Check out the following images, downloaded from the Bishop's Transcripts.

8 November 1845 Bishop's Transcript, St. Peter's Church, Liverpool - William Donaldson aka Robertson
Item 9, FHL [1068927]

10 September 1849 Bishop's Transcript, St. Peter's Church, Liverpool - Thomas Henry Edward Aldridge
Item 4, FHL [1068940]

Now this would have been no big deal if JK’s ancestry, like so many were all from an immediate location on this planet we call Earth. But here’s the rub, JK’s father, me, was born in Jamaica. My gg-grandfather, JK’s ggg-grandfather John Robertson was born in Lanark, Scotland.

JK’s mother, Maureen was born in Montreal. Maureen and I met in Fredericton, New Brunswick at University. All-things-being-equal I believe I have deduced that her gg-grandfather, JK’s ggg-grandfather Thomas Aldridge was born in Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire in England…

But at a moment in time, it appears that the Robertson and the Aldridge Families were in Liverpool. It was between the years of 1845 and 1849 that there were Robertson and Aldridge children baptized in the same Parish Church, St. Peter’s in Liverpool.

Happenstance? Maybe? A chance meeting? Perhaps? But 167± years later I discover that there may have been an earlier connection.

Written in the Stars? Definitely something to think about.

Enjoy!
