Part 343s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1837 James & Archibald Smith Cont’d

31 August 2010

Afternoon,

At this point, the search and research for the genealogy, ancestry, and family tree of ggg-grandfather James Smith has most definitely not come to a standstill. Even though the name James Smith appears to have been a very common and typical name in 1837, I am certainly glad that for this time period I am only limited, as best as I can see, to the island of Grenada.

I am now using the new version, No. 11 of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I have been an aficionado since version No. 1 and it is a tremendous assistance as well as a definite boon for this type of, or any type of writing work. The new version is tremendous. I can dictate and the software keys my words directly to the software that I am using. Amazing stuff...

This next Indenture is a continuation of the one that I began in my Posting in Part 341s. This document is definitely the dissolution of the Copartnership of James and Archibald Smith and Robert McCunn all of the City of Glasgow and doing business in the island of Grenada. From my reading it appears that James and Archibald Smith are buying out Robert McCunn.

There does not appear to be any indication or reference, hint or clue of any association or relationship to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

This Document is the last Smith related documented Item 1 of the Grenada Registers of Records found in the microfilm FHL [1563330].

Here are the images, pages 256 through and including 260.

Part 342j – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Acte De Naissance Project – 1840 Marie July – Transcription Update

30 August 2010

Afternoon,

Following up to the recent transcription of the 1840 Acte of Naissance, Birth Registration of gg-grandaunt Marie July, and Yann has sent me an updated copy. This updated transcription should provide more evidence and information. The research and the search for the ancestry and genealogy of our Family Tree certainly work much better when others offer their expertise. See Parts 339j and 340j.

Here is Yann’s transcription

July le Père? Dussant? _____ L’adjoint de Mairie

From Yann’s work, it would seem that the calculation of gg-grandaunt Marie July’s date of birth may be 27 August 1840. As the Acte de Naissance is dated 29 August 1840, and it states that she was “née avant hier à onze heures du Matin” “born before yesterday at 11 o’clock in the morning.” Logic calculation could imply that she born before yesterday, that is, yesterday could have been the 28th of August, and as it was at 11 am, the implication could be the morning of the 27th. Have fun with this calculation.

Thank you, Yann,

Enjoy,

Jim

Bon après-midi,

Merci, Yann,

Bon chance,

Part 341s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1837 James & Archibald Smith

29 August 2010

Afternoon,

My PC is back and it’s running extremely well. Please be aware that I do not forward any free items or promotions via email.

(The inserted image is from Royalty-Free Cartoons)

And here I return to my Indenture Transcription Project in the search and research for the origins, ancestry and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.  I am now working on a new FHL microfilm of the Grenada Registers of Records.  It includes the dates 1837 to 1881 and is v. Z2-G3.

This first Document is a first part of an Indenture dated 30 May 1837 and entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 14 July 1837. It most definitely is not a Document concerning ggg-grandfather James Smith. It appears to involve the James and Archibald Smith of Glasgow, Scotland and their previously known partner Robert McCunn.

The images of the two Pages 254 and 254 are downloaded from Item 1 of the microfilm FHL [1563330], Registers of records 1837-1881 (v. Z2-G3).

Here is my transcription. (I definitely would like to thank this scribe one day.)

Part 340j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1840 Marie July - Translation

22 August 2010

Afternoon,

The following is an updated transcription of the 1840 Acte de Naissance for gg-grandaunt Marie July. This follows my introduction on my Posting Part 339j.

As it is critical to have images that are as legible as possible, I have enlarged and worked on the gg-grandaunt Marie July’s 1840 Acte de Naissance to provide a better copy. This makes transcribing much easier, to some degree.

Now to continue my search for the next sibling of gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July.

And no, I haven’t given up the search for the origins and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith of Grenada. As my PC is being fixed, I sort of welcome the break from the transcription work of all the Smith-related Indentures. I will be returning to my Indenture Project. But for now I will continue with my Bordeaux Actes de Naissance Project.

Bon après-midi,

Part 339j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1840 Marie July

21 August 2010

Good Afternoon,

Today I am continuing with my Acte de Naissance Project. The next Acte de Naissance in my search and research of my family tree and ancestry is that of my gg-grandaunt Marie July.

GG-grandaunt Marie is a younger sister of my gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July. I discovered her Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration in the 1840 Civil Records of Bordeaux.

From the microfilm FHL [1647144] I have downloaded the image of part of the J Index N 1840 1S 1E 190 from the Civil Registers of Bordeaux.

My translation -

As the Index indicated the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration for Marie July is number 971 and appears to be dated 29 August. The year was 1840.

I discovered the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration at Rep 1S 1E 190. The image from the microfilm FHL [1647144]of the page follows:

Part 338j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1838 Pierre Henri July - Translation

20 August 2010

Good Afternoon,

The good news, I’ve worked the transcription on the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration of gg-granduncle Pierre Henri July. This information adds another collateral branch to my family tree and genealogy. Based on the date of the Acte of Naissance entry of 8 December 1838 gg-granduncle Pierre Henri was born 7 December 1838 before 3 o’clock in the early morning.

The bad news is that my PC, while in the shop being uninstalled of Windows Office 2010 Beta, it crashed. It appears that the Beta did not want to go quietly into the dark night. I now have to have my hard drive completely reformated and reconstructed. Damn! Out you damn Beta! At least I did not lose my data.

And so I continue my search and genealogy research. Following up from Part 337j, I have updated my transcription of gg-granduncle Pierre Henri July’s Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration.

383 July Pierre

I sometimes get myself confused between which document is which. Please bear with me. It is easy to mix up the Indexes from the Registers with the Ten Year Tables.

Bon après-midi,

Part 337j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1838 Pierre Henri July

19 August 2010

Image from Candi's Corner
Afternoon,

Tried something off-the-cuff for supper. I decided that I wanted a Thai shrimp salad. The humidity has been windows-foggy that I quickly cooked some shrimp. Most recipes called for bean sprouts which I didn’t have so I substituted Napa cabbage. I also didn’t have any cucumbers so I used zucchini. I julienned a carrots and a small red onion, found a lime, some fish sauce, red Thai chili curry sauce and brown sugar. And of course, I didn’t have any roasted peanuts, so I threw in some roasted cashews. There wasn’t any left-overs.

There are some problems taking the Windows Office 2010 Beta of my desktop in order to upgrade to an actual copy. Makes no sense, therefore still no PC.

Well, back to genealogy and my Acte de Naissance Project. I am currently working on gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July’s generation. I am attempting to gather all the birth registrations of his immediate brothers and sisters.

The next Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration is that of one of his younger brothers, Pierre Henri July. Great-great-granduncle Pierre Henri was born in Bordeaux, France in 1838. He was, of which I have documentary evidence, one of ggg-grandfather Jean François July’s children. Great-great-granduncle Pierre Henri was number six. (There is also a chance that there may have been two other children, but from the information provided through Family Search I have not seen any document or actual proof.)

From the Registres de l'état civil of Bordeaux I discovered the 1838 Index - Rep 1S 1E 184. The image of the page is downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1647142].

Transcribing the entry -
1383 July Pierre 8 “... (Dbre)

Thanks be that there are Indexes. I found the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration number 1383 for one Pierre, aka Pierre Henri July. His parents are entered as Jean François July and Catherine Dubuc. From my previous research these are ggg-grandparents Jean François and Catherine (née Dubuc) July.

Here is the image of the page which includes the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration 1383. My source is the microfilm FHL [1647142]. The actual section of the registers is Rep 1S 1E 184.

Bon après-midi

Part 336j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1824 Jean Jacques July - Updated Transcription and Translation

18 August 2010

Afternoon,

Continuing from Part 335j, this is an updated transcription of the 1824 Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration for gg-granduncle Jean Jacques July.

Thank you Yann for your valuable assistance. The inserted 2010 Google photo is at the corners where Rue de Raze meets Quai des Chartrons, the approximate locale in Bordeaux where the July family lived in 1824. The following is the updated transcription of the 1824 Birth Registration.

Accordingly the parents of gg-granduncle Jean Jacques July are ggg-grandfather Jean François July and his first wife, Françoise Poujeaux. You can see a visual representation of the relationships in the Pierre July Descendant Chart.

I have been able to get a copy of the page from the Tables Décennale, Ten Year Tables, which has an entry, I believe, corresponding to the 1824 Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration and to the same dated, 1 March entry in the Index.

There is one problem, from my comprehension point. The name entered in the Ten Year Table is July, Jean Cathe. This of course is not gg-granduncle Jean Jacques July’s complete name. If you look at the preceding and succeeding entries it appears that the scribe may have got a few names confused. The entry above gg-granduncle Jean’s reads Jacques, Catherine Jque and the entry below gg-granduncle Jean’s reads Jacques, Louisia Jn.

Here is the image of Page 288 from the Table Décennale downloaded from the Departmental Archives of Gironde in France. (Source: Etat Civil, Bordeaux, Tables NMD, Collection, 1823-1832, Naissances, Cote: 4 E 32.)

The date of entry of the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration in the Tableau Décennale, Ten-Year Table and the Index is 1 March 1824 and the actual birth registration states that great-great-grand-uncle Jean Jacques July was born “before yesterday evening at five o'clock”. The year 1824 was a leap year. If evening is assumed to begin between six and eight o’clock, it could be calculated that great-great-grandfather Jean Jacques July was born at five o’clock on 29 February 1824.

And for one Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration, that is three sources. And now to continue.

Enjoy,

Jim

Bon chance,

Jim

Part 335j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Acte De Naissance Project - 1824 Jean Jacques July

17 August 2010

Good Afternoon,

My desktop is in the shop. Not sure what happened but something happened to my Ubuntu operating system... and the Windows 7 configuration seemed to be running a wee bit slow. I’m now using our new Sony Vaio. This will be my fourth Vaio, and I guess I find it hard to change. Number 3 has been around six years and to refurbish it would probably cost as much as to replace it with a new one.

And as I do not have my desktop, I’ve been going somewhat antsy without my documents and images readily available for the my Transcription Project of the search of ggg-grandfather James Smith.

All-things-being-equal, I have been asked if there any other projects in the search and research of my genealogy and ancestry that I may be doing. Well it just so happens that I have been gathering images of Actes de Naissance, Birth Registrations, that are and may be included in my July line. The surnames included in this search are Collomière, Dubuc, July, and Merle.

This project of course is both a transcription and translation project; transcription from the script which may be either French or Latin, and then translation to English. Any assistance in both the transcriptions and translations certainly would be appreciated.

The first Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration, is that of great-great-granduncle Jean Jacques July. I have downloaded the image from the microfilm FHL [1647119] and the related Index from the subsequent microfilm FHL [1647120]. Both of these films are a part of a series of 297 microfilms titled Registres de l'état civil, 1793-1888 of Bourdeaux, Gironde, France.

Bon après-midi,

Part 334s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1834 James and Archibald Smith – Hermitage Estate, Carriacou

Evening,

Sometimes this transcribing can become a wee bit boring. Three times my head hit my keyboard. I now have "FGHJKL" imprinted across my forehead. On to my genealogy research.

(Image: Yawning, Wood engraving, Tirzah Garwood, 1929 from Adventures In The Print Trade)

Following up to the Posting Part 333s this next Indenture appears to be a subsequent and related document. This next Record from the Grenada Registers of Records is another work of my Transcription Project. It is a long one and is a continued part of my search and research for the genealogy and ancestral origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Sad to say that it appears that the James Smith mentioned in this Record does not appear to be ggg-grandfather James nor is there any hint or clue as to any family relationship. The Smiths included appear to be of the Jordan hill Smiths of Scotland.

Images of the Pages 17 through and including 26 are downloaded from Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563380].
