Evening,

Thought I would reformat the Matrix that I introduced in Part 445s. This should present the image of the summary data in a more legible form... hopefully...

Part 445s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – Smiths To Date

Afternoon,

Today I decided to take just a small respite from my work on my Transcription Project. The actual work is relevant to the search of the genealogy and origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. I am trying to determine from where and when he did “appear” on the Island of Grenada. For all intents and purposes ggg-grandfather James could have been born in Grenada… There is no immediate or actual discovered proof as to his origins.

The effort of my Transcription Project is to review as many Indentures, Contracts, and Documents from the Grenada Registers of Records which include, at least once, the surname Smith. I have limited, within reason, my search to the mid-to-late 1700s to the mid-1800s. I am hoping that in my review I may stumble across a hint, clue, lead, intimation, suggestion, idea, etc., which may lead me to that “Eureka” moment and assist me to discover the earlier generations of my Smith ancestors.

In the process of my search I am working with those Indentures, Contracts, and Documents from the Grenada Registers of Records that have been collected on microfilm by the Family History Library. As I work with each microfilm, which does represent a period of time, I have created Matrixes which record each unique Smith that I encounter and have included in a specific Posting in A Genealogy Hunt. These Matrixes can be seen listed under the Analyses tab in the Menu at the top of each page.

In a further effort, I have created a new Matrix which summarizes each unique individual named Smith as he or she may appear in a Document, and in my related Posting, from a specific microfilm. (See the write up on Grenada Family History as presented by The National Archives.)

I am currently working to provide an online and clear Matrix. If you would like a copy of the Matrix please contact me. If you any questions, comments, ideas please feel free to contact me.

Enjoy,

My Tangent – Can Genealogy Be Somewhat Overwhelming?

28 January 2011

Good afternoon from Tampa,

Last night I was asked the question, “Can genealogy be somewhat overwhelming?” And without missing a beat, I responded, “Yes.” But the secret is to keep organized… which of course does apply to any aspect and/or interest of one’s life.

And today I thought I would just jot down a quick list of those things and current projects that I am working on and pursuing in my genealogy.

1.  Search Engine Optimization – Per Wikipedia, “Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results.” In the evolution of SEO one such is the Top Listed Network. It had disappeared for a period of time and I have been trying to find out where it went or had my link been broken. Well, praise be, it returned yesterday, and I am once again a ranked site. You can link on to the Top Listed – Genealogy button on the left-hand column on any of A Genealogy Hunt’s pages.

In the meantime I have been attempting to set up a new SEO with Technorati. Technorati, according to Wikipedia, “is an Internet search engine for search blogs.” And I really have to get it through my thick skull that I have to read every step and instruction given. This isn't a model airplane.

2.  FHL Microfilms – I have near-completed my MS Access database of Family History Library microfilms and microfiche. To date, including the five new microfilms referencing my Merrifield search I ordered last night, I have entered 213. The database can be cross-referenced by various combinations including Surname, Country, Title, and Date(s). Now all I have to do is to find all the FHL pink-slip receipts hidden throughout this house.

3.  Sarlat, in Dordogne – July and Varigeau(d) Families – In my pursuit of my the research of my July and Vaurigeau family lines I discovered some more birth and burial registrations . I cannot guarantee that these 12 newly located Sarlat registrations are pertinent to my family genealogy but it is a find. The years involved are 1643 through 1670. I did discover that there are some periods of times missing in the copies of the recorded registers.

4.  In the area of DNA, both YDNA and mtDNA, I am awaiting the new FamilyTree DNA results to the Robertson (YDNA) and Smith (mtDNA) lines. Thanks to G and Z, it will be intriguing to see what marker-matches, (if any), surface.

5.  On Saturday, February 12th at the Largo Public Library, the Pinellas Genealogy Society is hosting a Seminar featuring Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak. One of her presentations is entitled “Trace Your Roots with DNA” which is also the title of one of the books she has authored.

6.  Smith Indenture Transcription Project – My new transcription work is an 1819 Indenture featuring Richard Oliver Smith, his deceased father William Smith, his two sisters Mary (née Smith) Lewis and Grace Smith, his mother Sarah Dean(e), and his purported-to-be wives Mary Broderip and Harriet, as well as other incidentally included persons. This next Document is a long one and has many pages. The Richard Oliver Descendant Chart provides a quick overview of who’s who.

7.  My subscription copy of the February/March issue of Internet Genealogy magazine arrived. I do like this magazine and the collection and diverse topics of the introductory use and effect of technology and the Internet to Genealogy. There is a good and preliminary article, "iPad and Your Genealogy Research!" by Tony Bandy. And speaking of iPads, I panicked last night and early this morning as I had mistakenly left my iPad at a location where I had been doing some research. In my concern and panic, I drove to find my errant iPad at the wee hour of 3:00 am. It was still there… and do you realize that there is NO traffic on the roads at that ungodly time of the day.

And I’m still keeping up with my 2011 Genealogy Resolutions… not yet overwhelmed.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 444s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1822 – Richard Oliver and William Smith

26 January 2011

Morning,

In the due course of my search and research, I'm certainly learning of the genealogy and inter-connections of the other Smiths who may have been involved in the history of the Island of Grenada. At times it seems like a momentous task to check out every Smith-related document and indenture in the search for the origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. This next Indenture, sorry to say, does not have any immediate relation to ggg-grandfather James.

(Lincoln's Inn, by Thomas Shepherd, 1830, from Wikimedia Commons)

This Indenture does however include Richard Oliver Smith and his deceased father William Smith. It also, from my understanding and research, includes the possible name of Richard Oliver Smith’s existent, or to be father-in-law Edmund Broderip the Younger. (See my Richard Oliver Descendant Chart.)

This next Indenture, pages 345 and 346, from the Grenada Registers of Records, appears to be a prelude contract to a further and continued transaction document. I will be following up with the subsequent Contract.

Here are the downloaded images of the two pages as acquired from Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].

Part 443s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1821 GGG-Grandfather James Smith Sells Portion of Property

25 January 2011

Morning,

Following up on the heels of Part 441s it appears that ggg-grandfather James Smith converts five shillings and one pepper corn into the 1821 sum of £858 - . - . And in response to my question and inquiry, it appears that ggg-grandfather James sells a portion of land, which is a parcel of land of Good Hope Estate to Mary Jane Marecheaux.

It is amazing as to what I am learning as I spend the effort and time searching and researching for my Smith origins and the ancestry of ggg-grandfather James. The question is “Would I have ever known the distant facts and/or details of the lives of my ancestor had I not ever stumbled into the pursuit of my genealogy?” The probable answer, prior to 2003, when I began my trek, I more than likely did not really care nor have any aspirations of checking out my ancestors’ lives and histories. And now I am obsessed.

This next Indenture in my Transcription Project, as I mentioned, appears to be a finalizing contract referencing the preceding Contract dated 7 September 1821. From my reading it appears that this follows, or ties to some other Indentures dated 29 February and 1 March 1816. I discussed the purchase of Good Hope Estate by ggg-grandfather James from Julien Lussan (aka Lu∫san) in Parts 400s and 401s.

This 1821 Sale to Mary Jane Marecheaux is for six acres and 10 perches or about 6.1 acres. GGG-Grandfather James purchased Good Hope Estate in 1816 and the approximate size of the property was 44.7 acres. Mary Jane Marecheaux’s purchase approximates to about 13.7% of the total of ggg-grandfather James’ property. From the land location specifications in the Indenture it would appear that this parcel of land is located at approximately the south-west corner of the Good Hope Estate. (My guess…)

The following are images of the Pages 299 through and including 302 from the Grenada Registers of Records as downloaded from Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563379].

Part 442s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study – Updated Research Matrix

24 January 2011

Afternoon,

I introduced an organizational component of my research and work early on in my Indenture Transcription Project; the Research Matrix. The purpose of the Research Matrix is to provide an immediate cross-referenced Index, of sorts that I can refer back to those Blog Postings that are particular and specific to a Smith ancestor or possibility.

I am a visual person when it comes to the organization of information, which of course could mean “Don’t move that pile cause I know exactly where that piece of paper with that bit of data is hidden in that stack.” And my organization on line at times can be somewhat prodigious…(a diplomatic way of saying “overwhelming”.)

I have created related Smith Indenture Study Matrixes. The data and Smith names provided on each Matrix, is relevant information which provides an immediate cross-reference table to each and every individual FHL microfilm that I have worked with or am working on, as associated with the Grenada Registers of Records. These Matrixes are filed under my menu tab labeled “Analyses”. The major thrust of this Study is the search and research for the origins and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

This new Smith Indenture Study Matrix is an update, mapping my work in progress, is associated with the microfilm FHL [1563379]. These Records are of the Grenada Registers of Records 1811-1825 (v. W4-H5). The previous update is at Part 406s.

If you are new to reading A Genealogy Hunt, the purpose of an Indenture Study Matrix is to present a visual and consolidated summary of those Postings of transcriptions of Records associated with specific Smiths. To view the Matrix, click on the image and increase the viewing aspect per your viewing software or application. Please note that I have not segregated the Posting numbers by unique individuals only by unique names, as encountered in each Record.

I have only listed the singular Smith names. In other words, there may be more than one individual with the same name, for example, James Smith. I have only recorded those names as single entries if and only if there is a unique prefix or suffix added to the name. For example, James Smith and James Smith, Junior each are represented on separate, single lines of the Matrix. The listed Smith may or may not be the same individual but the transcribed Record(s) may not have any clues or hints as to that fact.

In order to see a specific Part, please enter the Part number, e.g. Part 441s, into the “Search This Blog” box. You can also see a copy of this Matrix by clicking the Analyses tab at the top of the page under the header and choosing the corresponding title on the pull-down menu.

I'm using SmartDraw VP to create the Matrix and hopefully, sometime soon, I hope to provide immediate links to relevant Posting as indicated within the Matrix. At some point, I hope to present the Matrix with working links. The nice thing about SmartDraw VP, it has the link capability in a SmartDraw form. This is a definite goal when I attack the creation of the A Genealogy Hunt website.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Part 441s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1821 GGG-Grandfather James Smith – Good Hope Estate

23 January 2011

Evening,

And tonight’s supper was a variation on Aloo Palak Sabji. I added cherry tomatoes from the garden and fresh zucchini, and then I accompanied each plate with home-made Roti. Good food for a cold Tampa night. The inserted image is of Palak. The store I bought it at labeled it Water Spinach.

Thank you for the positive compliments that I have recently received regarding my work on A Genealogy Hunt. My presented work online is a journal of my research and search for my genealogy and family ancestry. It is a way that I am able to organize myself without having to leaf through many hand-written notebooks and reams of paper. And yes, at times, it can seem overwhelming… I have come to a personal conclusion that genealogy is not for the feint-of-heart or for those who cannot muddle through with the lessons of the development of patience.

Continuing in my Transcription Project, the next Indenture is, all-things-being-equal, referential to ggg-grandfather James Smith. This Document is another “One Pepper Corn Rent” contract between ggg-grandfather James and one Mary Jane Marecheaux, which I believe is the spelling of name that I can make out. There are no immediate or explicit clues as to ggg-grandfather James’ origins.

I am a wee bit perplexed by the intent of this Indenture in its reference to Good Hope Estate. I’m not sure of the wording, and as I am not either a surveyor nor a contract lawyer, as to whether ggg-grandfather is selling Good Hope Estate or just some portion of land thereof.

Here is the downloaded images of Pages 298 and 299 from Item 7 of the FHL microfilm [1563379] from the Grenada Registers of Records.

My Tangent – A New Way To Pay For Research?

Afternoon,

I have to vent today. In my morning research of my genealogy and ancestry I stumbled upon a personal Family History Site. I was interested and I linked on to the site and within a short space of seconds I was immediately transported to a separate page. This new page indicated that if I so desired to continue using this family-specific site I would either have to become a paying member or I would have to offer up some approved and accepted pertinent genealogy information. You can imagine my immediate reaction.

First of all I am a blatant supporter of free enterprise and entrepreneurship. I believe that everyone has the right to make money in anyway s/he can, within the bounds of the laws of the land and country. But isn’t this going a bit far?

This “ingenious” impresario is now levying fees for his or her own family information. Are they offering a service? Is this a product to a niche market, to other family genealogists interested in the same family names? Maybe? And there is a “relaxed”, but wordy disclaimer that they are not qualified professional genealogists… but that they are experienced. What is the real product being sold?

So what are the authors’ expectations? Is this a prostitution of their work? Would I be making the same argument if the author published a book or hard-copy and attempted to sell it on Amazon.com or at Barnes & Noble?

I do have a choice to pay a membership so I can review the data on line… Also I have the choice if the opportunity presents itself to purchase a book or publication. These are my choices, and I do have a number of paid subscriptions to a number of data sites and research-specific sites. Are my hackles up cause this is a family-specific history? I think that I would have preferred a link-to a screen; albeit page that immediately announced that there was a subscription possibility.

But here is my thought, or should I say my fear – Will we soon see every Tom, Dick, and Susan jump on the bandwagon and start charging for his or her own family research, no matter how excellent, or how bad it is? Will every self-serving genealogist out there, globally, now want to become mini-Ancestry.coms, WorldVitalRecords, FindMyPast.com, or ScotlandsPeople? Remember these are huge databases that provide libraries of available data and information.

Okay that’s enough… I’ve got to get back to my own research.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 440s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1797 – The Logie Smith Mystery Continues

21 January 2011

Good Afternoon,

I think I may have solved a part of a mystery... well, a mystery to me. This is all from the due course of my search and research for the origins and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

In Part 178s I introduced a James Smith, a Weaver from Logie in the County of Perth in Scotland. Long story short, he was, in December of 1797 searching for the Estates of his departed brother William Smith and of his son James Smith. Both, it appeared had been Merchants in Grenada.

Yesterday, going through some of my filed images, I discovered a Burial Registration dated January 1797. It is the burial record of one, Mr. William Smith, Merchant, who was buried on 2 December 1796.

Here is the image of the page 255 of the Parish of St. George Register from Item 2 of the microfilm FHL [1523656].

This part of the Parish Register, 1784 to 1804, was transcribed by John Randolph Bertrand and Wilfred Jones-Bateman and was declared on 13 March 1903. Here is my transcription of the transcription.

255

1797
1491 Mr. William Smith, Merchant; was buried on the 2nd day of Decbr. 1796

signed Thos. May
Rector of St. Andrew & St. David

All-things-being-equal, this Burial Registration could be an entry referencing the brother William Smith of the Weaver James Smith of Logie, Scotland. Here are the sequence of events in what I believe is date order.

  1. 2 December 1796 – Burial of William Smith, Merchant in Grenada
  2. January 1797 – Entry of Burial Registration in Saint George Parish Register
  3. 26 December 1797 – Contractual appointment of George Wilson Power of Attorney by James Smith, Weaver, of Logie Scotland and brother of William Smith
  4. 26 December 1797 – Written mention of search for the Estates of William Smith and of James Smith, brother and son, respectively, of James Smith, Weaver of Logie, Scotland
  5. 7 June 1803 – Entry of 26 December 1797 contract and Indenture to Grenada Registers of Records

I did also find a detached and disconnected Register entry, which based on the clear-cut information entered, may or may not suffice for the burial registration of the son of James Smith the Weaver of Logie, Scotland.

Downloaded from Item 2 of the microfilm FHL [1523656] here is Page 210.

As you can read from my transcription there is not much in the text to hang-a-hat-on, so-to-speak.

210
1795
1218 _____ Smith, was buried in St. George’s _____ on the
18th day of September 1795
Witness
_____

signed Thos. May
Rector of St. Andrew & St. David

All I can say is that there are three clear facts that could “possibly and cogently” tie this entry to the son, James Smith, of James Smith the Weaver of Logie, Scotland. The facts are:

  1. Location – Grenada
  2. Surname – Smith
  3. Date of burial – 18 September 1795 which occurred prior to the date of James Smith the Weaver’s Power of Attorney Contract, 26 December 1797

And at this point I rest my case... for now. Ponder a bit and let me know your thoughts.

Regards,

Jim

Part 439m – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1844 & 1846 Christenings – Great-Granduncles George Bailey and William Merrifield

19 January 2011

Afternoon,

And now I’ve chanced upon the possibility of two great-granduncles; great-granduncle George Bailey Merrifield and great-granduncle William Merrifield. They would have been elder brothers of great-grandmother Elizabeth Charlotte (née Merrifield) Robertson.

This is the next result of my search and research of the Merrifield Line, an ancestral branch of my maternal Robertson Line and family genealogy. Great-grandmother Elizabeth Charlotte (née Merrifield) Robertson was my grandfather Frederick Henry Robertson’s mother. The following is my new and updated Merrifield Descendant Chart.

You will note that I have now included ggg-grandfather George Bailey and his two grandsons, my great-granduncles George Bailey and William Merrifield.

All-things-being-equal both great-granduncle George Bailey and great-granduncle William were named for their maternal and paternal grandfathers, respectively.

The information that I have most recently encountered is taken from the database entries to the FHL Family Search.

Record Title: England, Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900
Name: George Bailey Merryfield
Event: CHRISTENING
Event Date: 07 Jul 1844
Event Place: Clifton, St Andrew, Gloucestershire, England
Gender: Male
Father: John Merryfield
Mother: Esther Merryfield
Digital Folder Number: 4191932

Record Title: England, Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900
Name: William Merrifield
Event: CHRISTENING
Event Date: 26 Jul 1846
Event Place: Clifton, St Andrew, Gloucestershire, England
Gender: Male
Father: John Merrifield
Mother: Esther Merrifield
Digital Folder Number: 4191932

I was also able to find the Birth Indexes for indicating both entries at FindMyPast.com. The following are the downloaded images of the two pages.

My transcriptions –

SURNAME of PARENT – Merryfield
NAME (if any) of SEX of CHILD – George Bailey
SUP. REGISTRAR’S DISTRICT – Clifton
Vol. – XI
Page – 255

SURNAME of PARENT – Merrifield

And now to find copies of the actual registrations. Next.

Enjoy,

Part 438bm – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1841 Marriage – GGG-Grandparents John and Esther (née Bailey) Merrifield

Morning,

And wonders never cease… the searches, the finds… and the “Ah-hah!” moments. This genealogy thing is forever a giving thing. It is like a continual finding of Christmas presents under an evergreen tree that is never taken down and put away for the season.

(Image: Holy Trinity Church, Westbury on Trym, Bristol, Steinsky, 2006)

In the continuation of my research into my Merrifield Family Line I stumbled upon a couple of choice finds tonight. I have copies of the BMD Indexes of Marriages Registered in October, November, December 1841 for both great-great-grandparents Esther (née Bailey) and John Merrifield. The following is my transcription. Note that gg-grandfather John’s surname is entered as “Merryfield”.

NAMEDISTRICTVOLPAGE
BAILEY EstherClifton11393
MERRYFIELD JohnClifton11393

The following are the pages of the Indexes.

Next I discovered the following information as an entry in the new Family Search Historical Records Database, for England, Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900.

record title: England, Bristol Parish Registers, 1538-1900
Name: John Merryfield
Event: MARRIAGE
Event Date: 17 Oct 1841
Event Place: Westbury on Trym, Holy Trinity, Gloucestershire, England
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Father: William Merryfield
Spouse: Esther Bailey
Spouse's Marital Status: Single
Spouse's Father: George Bailey
Digital Folder Number:4185367

I have not as yet garnered a copy of the actual Marriage Registration, but all-things-being-equal this data entry will provide me with the information necessary to get a copy of the same. Possible FHL microfilms which may have the original record are 1595525, 1595528, 1596411, 1596360, and 1749372.

And a new ancestor is included in the data entry information, gg-grandmother Esther (née Bailey) Merrifield’s father, ggg-grandfather George Bailey. This is another new limb of my Robertson Family Tree.

So to continue… I will be updating the Merrifield Descendant Chart shortly.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 437s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1821 GGG-Grandfather James Smith Finalizes Sale of 810 SqFt – £1,386.0.0

18 January 2011

Good day and a Merry Winnie the Pooh Day…

The sun is shining and our house is shaking off the doldrums of last week and the cold and rain… and preparing for our shot of a mini-Spring. The Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting thunder-storms, then sunny and cold, then sunny and very cool for the remainder of January. Here’s hoping that we won’t get anything lower than the average predicted temperature of 59°F.

And so I continue with my Indenture Transcription Project, in the search for the origins and genealogy of ggg-grandfather James Smith, who made his home in Grenada.

The next Indenture from the Grenada Registers of Records follows up, what appears to be the final paperwork on the sale of a small parcel of land; 810 square feet. This Document follows my previous work on a preluding Document I worked on in Part 432s.

This property appears to have been sold by ggg-grandfather James to one Catherine Baillie of the Town of Saint George and her 2-year old infant son, William Miller. There also appears to be a caveat added into the Document that includes another William Miller who is not is Grenada, but in Trinidad.

Here are images of the Pages 137 through and including 140 downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563379].

The nature of this Indenture, which of course I am not purporting that what I think is the correct and viable source of certainty, is that there could have been an association between ggg-grandfather James and Catherine Baillie. This is purely conjecture... that is a part of the questions that I have jotted down after I transcribed and read the Indenture.

On to the next Indenture – a contract between ggg-grandfather James Smith and one Mary Jane Marecheaux.

Stay tuned, and enjoy,

Jim

Part 436jv – Smith Robertson Genealogy – July/Vaurigeau(d) – Sarlat Discovery Database Cont’d

16 January 2011

Good Evening,

And I’ve been working on my Sarlat Discovery Database. The prime purpose of this exercise is to organize my search for the genealogy and ancestry of my July (aka Julie, Julle, Jully) and Vaurigeau (aka Vaurigeaud) family lines. I am trying to determine the ancestors of my gggggg-grandfather Pierre July as well as those of my ggggg-grandmother Magdelaine (née Vaurigeau) July, his daughter-in-law who was married to his son, ggggg-grandfather Pierre.

I was able to locate Indexes of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from the Parish Registers of what I believe are the churches of Sainte-Marie and Notre Dame of the Town of Sarlat in the Départment of Dordogne in France. My preliminary work is presented in Part 433j where I presented my first MS Access Database Reporting.

The following Table is an extraction and a transcription of the individual entries of those Parish Registrations that may or may not be applicable and connected to my family lines. This is also NOT a complete listing as there are other Indexes that I have to review. My database also does NOT include the Indexing of the Marriage Registrations. The information was transcribed from images of the original documents as captured in the microfilm FHL [1415457].

Bonsoir,

Bon chance,

Jim
