Part 225s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1820 Laurence L. Smith

28 February 2010

Another good late afternoon,

And before I start making supper; tonight’s main dish – Ginger Chicken stir-fry with sesame noodles, I thought I would quickly post my next transcription.

(Inserted image by Tina Rupp from 30-Minute Meals, Everyday with Rachael Ray, April 2007.)

This next Record, pages 493 and 494 is a short one from the Grenada Register of Records and Item 2. And in this Record introduces a new Smith – Laurence Lewis Smith. There are no tell-tale clues to his ancestry or genealogy, and at this point definitely to indication that there is a connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Pages 493 and 494 from Register, as downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563329] -

Part 224s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1819 Richard Oliver Smith

Late Afternoon,

Today I was able to finish a number of Transcriptions of Records in my continued search for the ancestry of ggg-grandfather James Smith. And I keep saying to myself, “I’m not giving up… I’m not giving up.” The one thing for sure is that I am certainly getting to know a smidgen of the genealogy of the other Smiths associated with Grenada in and around the early 1800s.

This first Document from the Grenada Registers of Records from the microfilm FHL [1563329] from Item 2 is an Indenture signed on behalf of one Richard Oliver Smith by his Attorney W. Mitchell. From my reading it appears that William Mitchell was given Power of Attorney on behalf of Richard Oliver Smith some 11 years earlier; (see Part 197s).

The date of this document is 24 July 1819 as well as it was entered to the Register on the same day. I haven’t seen too many of these sorts of “fast” written and registered records. And of course, there are no hints in the text that may give me a clue as to the genealogy of ggg-grandfather James.

Here are the two pages: 83 and 84.

Part 223s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1818 Smiths of Jordan Hill Plus

27 February 2010

Afternoon,

You know sometimes this Indenture Project can really and truly just become so overwhelming, that I ask of myself, “Why bother?” But I need to know and I need to find out just where ggg-grandfather James Smith originated from. And that’s my goal in my search and research of the genealogy and ancestry of my Smith family line.

This next Document, five pages; 312 through and including 316 is really tedious and more of a mind twister. The Record was entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 29 June 1818. I downloaded the image from Item 1 the microfilm FHL [1563329] which provides the entries from 1817 to 1837 and volumes R2 through Z2.

And did I get a number of Smiths – Archibald Smith of Jordan Hill; James Smith; James Smith, Junior; Archibald Smith, Junior; Archibald Smith, Youngest, all of Glasgow, all Merchants, and operating as copartners in the firm Leitch and Smith operating in Grenada. Also, in the Document there is William Smith, of Glasgow and a Baillie acting on behalf of the Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow.

I had to look up, in Webster’s 1913 Revised Unabridged Dictionary the definition of a Baillie… and I found the following: “An officer in Scotland, whose office formerly corresponded to that of sheriff, but now corresponds to that of an English Alderman… [See Bailiff].” And my response: my surname is too, too common!

All-things-being-equal, even though I have struggled with my transcription of this Document I cannot see any possible hint that these Smiths are in any way immediately connected to ggg-grandfather James.

Here are the copies of the five pages; 312 – 316 of the Record:

And my long and laborious transcription… I certainly would invite any assistance to help with those words, represented by an underscore, or blank “_____” that I have not been able to decipher.

My Tangent – Overcast, Earthquakes, Snow, and Matrixes

Good Saturday Morning,
It is a dreary and dismal day. Sunshine Florida is just a figment of my imagination. It doesn’t exist, and “pour tous les anciens” there certainly is no yellow brick road leading here to the glorious relaxed and beach living lifestyle. Hah! But I suppose I could be shoveling like in the Northeast, or scrambling out of the way of tsunami waves in Tokyo or clambering over broken buildings in Chile… or sitting at some accelerator pedal hearing in DC. Nope, I’m just here at my PC working on the Transcription Project and factoring out the color and fabrics of our new quilt.

(The inserted image is of Fanore Beach, Clouded Sun II by Michael Fairclough.)

Here’s the newly updated Matrix for the microfilm FHL [1563329], Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2).

You can also see my other worksheets at the Analyses page of my Blog.

I spent the time yesterday tracking down an errant file some spam-heathen had snuck into my PC via the Internet. It’s a DLL file that causes programs not to do what they are supposed to do. Found it. Trapped it. Quarantined it. Took a bit of effort and it was sort of like that mosquito that gets into your bedroom at night and buzzes around your ear, just when you want to fall asleep. You know what I mean. And I squished it. It’s gone.

Enjoy,

Part 222s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1815 James & William Smith

25 February 2010

Morning,

The next Record includes both the names James and William Smith. Not knowing of this James Smith’s relationship with the other names addressed in the Document, there is no apparent clue that could lead me to know, at this present stage of my genealogy and ancestry search that this James could be my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The Record is of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2) of Item 1 of the microfilm FHL [1563329]. The date that this Document was written was 13 July 1815, sworn to 28 May 1818, and entered to the Registers 26 May 1818. And of course, the dates of the sequence of events do not make any sense to me as the swearing of the Document occurred two days after the Record was entered to the Registers. Do any of you have any ideas?

All-things-being equal here are the two pages; 299 and 300 –

Part 221s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1817 Archibald, James, & James Jr. Smith

24 February 2010

Evening,

Here’s the picture: 10-pound dog, Tinker, growling and snarling; a cache of 20 pounds of gnaw-bones; three other dogs; Tobi, Taylor, and Bella weighing a total of 152 pounds cowering with puzzled expressions. I don’t speak dog, but I certainly can imagine what was being said. The bones are back in the plastic bag in a cupboard out of canine reach. Peace.

The Transcription Project continues. This next record does not appear to have any piece to the genealogy puzzle of ggg-grandfather James Smith, nor does it have any hint of any clues to his ancestry. This next Record is of page 154 and 155 dated 26 August 1817 and entered to the Grenada Register of Records 8 September 1817.

I downloaded the image of The Record from the microfilm FHL[1563329] from the 1817-1837 (v. G2-R2) portion in Item 1.

The three Smiths included in this Document can be cross-indexed to the Documents transcribed to date in Parts 192s, 207s, and 210s.

Part 220s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1816 James & David Smith of Carriacou, Grenada – New Study Matrix

Early morning,

Another freeze is forecasted for Tampa this coming Friday. Well, there’s nothing to left to cover. And my new tomato plants are in pots that I can bring them into the warmth. I’m trying those upside-down planters again this spring.

I have updated the Smith Genealogy Indenture Study Matrix. There are actually now two; one for each microfilm that I have finished or am currently working with – FHL [1563328] and FHL [1563329]. I’ve attempted to keep the same names in each Matrix and they are a part of my genealogy and ancestry research as I search for that hint of evidence.

Continuing with my Indenture Project, the next Smith-related Record as found in the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. G2-R2) is found on the microfilm FHL [1563329].

This Document, on pages 136 and 137, is dated 31 October 1816, avowed 26 July 1817, and entered 6 August 1817. There are a ton of names entered to this Record including James and David Smith. There is no hint that this is ggg-grandfather James or that David Smith is of any relation to my ancestor.

Part 219s – Smith Robertson Genealogy - Is James Smith the Mill Wright ggg-grandfather James Smith the Shipwright?

22 February 2010

hank you, Felicity, Paula, and David. Also thank you to the reader who commented favorably in Chinese. I am just beginning to fathom the many places in this world that readers of my Blog are checking in from. It is amazing how technology tools have given us the continued development and increasing power of communication. (I’m so sorry T that this may cause more “nn”.)

As I mentioned I have been thinking about my last two Transcriptions, Part 216s and Part 217s and the possible connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Here are a few of the points that sort of stick out from the Records when I attempt to correspond and understand ggg-grandfather James’ genealogy. Ideas and thoughts compiled and authored by both Ray and Eileen certainly have been key and helpful to the exploration and collection of these following points and ideas.

The name – James Smith. Both Records’ principal character was a James Smith. GGG-grandfather was James Smith.

The location – Saint George, Grenada. The James Smith of the Records, as well as ggg-grandfather James, is of, but not necessarily from, the island country of Grenada.

The time frame – 1816 and 1817 - Both Records were written, sealed, received, and entered in 1816 and 1817. GGG-grandfather James Smith, from what I have been able to find, already had business dealings and had begun a family in Grenada. GG-grandaunt Eley and gg-grandfather James, Junior, were born in 1812 and 1815, respectively. This allows for a correlation and cross-reference of time.

The occupation – Mill Wright. The James Smith of these Documents is addressed as a “Mill Wright”. A James Smith, in a record from the Grenada Registers of Records dated 15 May 1841; see Part 60s, appears to be referred to as “retired from the firm…”, “in the trade or business of ShipWrights to commerce…” Another Record dated 20 June 1807, references James Smith, (see Part 191s), as “Mill Carpenter for divers good…” Also in Part 129s the article from The Times dated 27 December 1802 refers to a James Smith, possibly of Grenada and as “Carpenter of the Veʃʃel”.

Two other source records refer to James Smith and the indication of some “water-related” construction.

The first, from an article titled “Plans For Conveying Water Into Town” from The Grenada Magazine: Or Monthly Miscellany Of Religious and General Information. No. I. January, 1833. Vol. I.; published in Grenada by William Edward it is coincidental that “ – Near the residence of James Smith, Esquire, “The Hope,” a pure stream of water passes the public road –“ and that the article discusses the development of the conveyance of water to Saint George. “The Hope”, from my understanding did belong, at one time, to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The second is the entry of a Law, No LXXXVIII. “An Act for introducing a supply of Water into the Town of Saint George… dated 22nd December 1836" and a subsequent amendment Act, No, 88. (2) from the publication The Laws of Grenada, And The Grenadines; From The Year 1766, To The Year 1852 edited by William Snagg, Esq., and printed by the Public Printer of Grenada, 1852. The James Smith included in this Act, as appointed Commissioner, may be ggg-grandfather James. And not that it is impossible, his son, gg-grandfather James, Junior, could also be the appointee named James Smith, but he may have just turned 19 years old.

And then my logical question is “Why did William McIntosh,” as recorded in Part 216s appoint James Smith the Mill Wright his Attorney?

I will continue my thought processes in my next Posting.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 218b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1925 Marriage – Philip Green & Anna C. Brunhammer

21 February 2010

Afternoon,

Just back from Home Depot… It’s amazing how many people are buying new young plants to plant when there are still two more full moons to be had in the sky. Clear sky on a full moon night, in Tampa means a greater chance of frost, especially for the months of October, November, December, January, February, and March. That’s supposed to be our six days of winter. This year screwed up.

Exploring the tracks of the Brunhammer Family genealogy grandaunt Anna C. Brunhammer follows her two older brothers, grandfather Harry, (Part 214b), and granduncle Eugene, Jr., (Part 215b), and ties the knot with Philip Green on 9 September 1925.

Part 217s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1817 James Smith – A Quick Follow-up

Morning,

Subsequent to receiving power of attorney from William McIntosh the 16th of August, 1816, James Smith then by Letter of Substitute nominates Laurence Vonweiller his power of attorney on the 21st of May, 1817. And then, the two Documents are entered to the Grenada Register of Records, respectively on the 5th and 6th of August 1817. (See Part 216s.)

All-things-being-equal the James Smith on both Records has to be the same person. Both are recorded of Saint George, Grenada. Both are registered as Mill Wrights, and both are assigned as Attorney to William McIntosh.

Here is the short Letter of Substitution from bottom half of page 135 of the Grenada Register of Records, 1817-1837 (v. G2-R2) and found on the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Part 216s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1817 James Smith – Is This Evidence?

20 February 2010

Evening,

My mind is in some sort of whirl, trying to decide on how to assimilate into my search for ggg-grandfather James Smith the next two Records that I have transcribed... And so I sat at the piano and played for a couple of hours to think through my methods and tactics. There’s a voice in my head, albeit hiding amongst the synapses and dendrites that keeps saying that there may be something here regarding my genealogy and my ancestry.

The first Document is from the Grenada Register of Records, 1817-1837 (v. G2-R2) as recorded on the microfilm FHL [1563329] and is found at pages 134 and 135.

This is a Power of Attorney of one William McIntosh, Merchant of Glasgow, Scotland who appoints a James Smith, Mill Wright of Saint George, Grenada, as his Attorney. Now, you can understand my question, in the preceding My Tangent, “When is an Attorney Not An Attorney?

James Smith, of this Record, is identified as a "Mill Wright". And of course it is possible for a Mill Wright to become an Attorney; to be appointed to act on behalf of the interests of someone else. A Mill Wright could also become over the course of his life career an Attorney, the Lawyer-type.

And the fact that James Smith is listed as a “Mill Wright” is definitely an occupation of which to have a further inspection. As a cross-reference see Part 60s and Part 131s. GGG-grandfather James Smith is listed and indicated as a "Shipwright". Webster’s Dictionary defines a wright as “a person who makes, constructs, or repairs: used chiefly in compounds wheelwright, shipwright”. I’ll go into that more in my next postings.

Here are the pages; 134 and 135:

My Tangent – When Is an Attorney Not An Attorney?

Afternoon,

My head is in a spin this morning, and not saying that some of you may consider that it is in a spin at most times anyway, but here is my question… When is an attorney not an Attorney? See that I have maintained a lowercase on the first “attorney” and I’ve capitalized the second, “Attorney”.

And really, I am serious; this is not a trick question. This is me trying to understand something that I have found in my Transcription Project that may or may not provide some sort of clue in my search for the genealogy and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

This is what I’ve found as to definitions of the word "attorney".

Today’s definitions:
1. From The Free Dictionary, by Farlex – attorney
  • (Law) a person legally appointed or empowered to act for another
  • (Law) (Business/Professions) US a lawyer qualified to represent clients in legal proceedings
  • (Law) (Business/Professions) South African a solicitor
  • [from Old French atourné, from atourner to direct to; see ATTORN]
2. From the Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary – attorney
  • Etymology Middle English attourney, from Anglo-French aturné, past participle of aturner
  • Date: 14th Century
  • one who is legally appointed to transact business on another’s behalf; especially :Lawyer
3. From AskOxford.com, Oxford Dictionaries – attorney
  • a person appointed to act for another in legal matters
  • chiefly US a lawyer
  • ORIGIN from Old French atorner ‘assign’
And so, come back and just take a gander at my next couple of postings in my Transcription Project. Is there some shred of evidence as to the origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith? Or is it just happenstance? And the search continues.

Enjoy,

Jim
