Part 193s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – James Smith Genealogy Time Line Analysis

31 January 2010

Evening,

Hand’s healed from Tinker-bite and temporary crown has been replaced. Last night’s and tonight’s suppers were experiments – Shrimp and Scallop Lasagna with steamed Asparagus and salad; this evening Mozzarella Stuffed Meatloaf, Potato Gratin and steamed Peas and salad. We do eat well… I think.

I needed a break from the Transcription Project that I’ve been working on and as mentioned briefly in Part 191s. I’ve begun a visual analysis of a possible Time Line of ggg-grandfather James Smith. I know one thing about me is that I have to, in most cases, see a visual representation or illustration of the facts and possibilities. This genealogy thing is the ultimate puzzle. It’s sort of like doing a jigsaw puzzle without the cover of the box to provide you with the conceptual picture of what you are expected to complete. You’re always hoping that the pieces will fit together without too much effort… Not so at all times in the pursuit of our ancestral lines.

Today I’ve created a Time Line Analysis in which I have plotted a number of facts pertaining to ggg-grandfather James Smith and his immediate family. The time range that I am using is 1760 thought 1850. Here it is –

A quick explanation… Facts based on documentation and data discovered are all entered in black followed by a posting code in parentheses. For example, (P61s) is my abbreviation for Part 61s. You can cross-check my work by entering “Part 61s” in the upper left-hand Search box on my Blog page. You will be able to see the source of my information. All definitive information regarding the Smith Family is entered above the Year Scale in the Time Line. Any information that may have relevancy but is not proven at this point is entered below the Time Line connected by a red line and arrow.

I have included my thoughts and construed ideas and entered them in red. In this case these statements could be above or below the Time Line.

Please feel free to comment and I will be including all my work and analyses papers in a new tab on my Blog page titled, Analysis.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 192s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1807 Archibald, John, James, James Jr., Robert, and Hector Smith

Evening from the overcast and drizzling Gasparilla Tampa,

Tampa is the only city that I know that annually celebrates the outright raping, murdering, and pillaging of its citizens. And it’s all for the damn beads!

Avast, it is José Gaspar, and all-things-being equal, it is a pretty damn good possibility that this was all a creation of the Tampa Tourist Board beginning beginning in about 1904 to bring visitors to the City… and to provide the “equivalent” celebratory parties and parades of Mardi Gras and New Orleans. Who knows?

I spent some considerable time on the next document, an assignment of power of attorney, dated 8 October 1807 and entered into the Grenada Register of Records on 19 April 1808. And I mean this one has Smiths. Unless I missed one, I count six Smiths – Archibald, John, James, James Jr., Robert, and Hector. I just have to determine if one or more of these Smith gentlemen are part of my genealogy and ancestry.

This Document was found on pages 489 through and including 493 in the Grenada Register of Records 1797 to 1817 (v. G2-R2). Images were downloaded from FHL [1563328].

The pages are as follows:

Part 191s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1807 James and George Smith

29 January 2010

Afternoon,

Well sometimes in the search there is always a tip of an iceberg that just may stick its summit out of the reams and reams of papers. The next document from the Grenada Register of Records, in Item 5, may be just one of those tips.

The document dated 17 April 1807 and entered 1 December 1807 presents two, albeit three, hints that there may be some connection. The hints are the name “James Smith” and his written occupation, which I believe is “Mill Carpenter”. I do know that my ggg-grandfather James Smith was a Carpenter but from the information I have and from the communications I have received he lived in the Parish of St. George. The James Smith of the 1807 document is of the Parish of St. Andrew. The location is not a major issue as there are only six Parishes comprising the Island of Grenada and the Parish of St. Andrew borders the Parish of St. George. It is only about 12.7 miles or 20.4 kilometers from St. George’s in St. George to Grenville in St. Andrew. (According to Bing Maps the trip today should take about 22 minutes.)

So is this James Smith the ggg-grandfather James Smith, I’m looking for?

He could not be either of the two Jameses, (I'm sorry I do not know the plural of my name), named in Part 178s, as one appears to have been living in Logie, Scotland and his son, the other one, had passed away sometime prior to 26 December 1797 or 14 years earlier. But without any other clues, the search continues.

And as far as I can see from this document there is no indication of a familial connection to George Smith who is included in the writing.

Here are the two pages; 416 and 417 from the Grenada Register of Records from the microfilm FHL [1563328], 1797 to 1817 (v. G2-R2).

In order to get some of the wording of the note in the margin I conducted a search for relevance and similar association. I was able to get the title of the Law from section 47 Geo. III. from The Laws of The British Colonies, In The West Indies And Other Parts of America Concerning Real and Personal Property and Manumission of Slave; With A View of The Constitution of Each Colony., by John Henry Howard, Volume 1, London 1827.

I am amazed to the account and the history that I am being afforded as I continue my search from my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Part 190s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1807 Gavin Smith

28 January 2010

Evening,

No Christmas trees this posting. I just got in early from my shift at the FHC, and I just put away, i.e. reviewed six microfilms all of Bordeaux, France. This review project is the search for Birth Registrations for the Collomiere, Dubuc, July, and Merle. The ranges of my search included 1819-1822 and 1837-1840.

The next work of my transcribing is of the Document on Page 287 as found in Item 5 of microfilm FHL [1563328]. The Smith, this time is Gavin Smith the Surveyor. My previous references to Gavin Smith are included in Part 131v and Part 174s.

The Document is extremely short.

My eyes are given a rest, but I had to check out the reference to the “Levera Estate”. I discovered two cross-references in my stash, thanks to Steve. Both are publications by the Surveyor Gavin Smith. The publications are:

1801 Map of The Island of Grenada, and
1824 Reference To The Plan of The Island of Grenada.

The information is extremely interesting and the above inserted clipping from the 1801 Map highlights Levera in the Parish of St. Patrick. Once again, no hint of a connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The Page 287 Document appears to be a Letter of Certification; as follows:

And my transcription:

Entered 26th June 1807
These are to Certify that the Admeasurement of the
Land of Levera Estate made by me and which was sold by the
late Charles Ashwell Esquire to Meʃss Fraser Stuart & Lackey
containing as by the Diagram annexed to the said Sale 257 ½
acres (and which Diagram is copied in the Secretary’s Office) is to
the best of my knowledge and Judgment correct and I am of Opinion
that the Seller of the said Land has a Right according to the Customs
and Usages of this Island to include the King's fifty Paces in the said
Sale and to receive the Money from the Buyer for the same fee which
Reason (and not by mistake) I did include the said King's fifty Paces
in the above 257 ½ Acres. St. George's Grenada 26 June 1807

Gavin Smith

the sworn Colony Surveyor of this Island the Party signing and executing
the above Certificate as his Act and Deed this twenty sixth day

A point of information - Charles Ashwell, who is noted in the Letter, passed away in 1798.  The next transcription should be interesting. Stay tuned.

Part 189s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1807 Andrew Smith

Good Morning,

Can anyone tell me when is it a good time to dismantle a Christmas tree that sits in the front window of a living room? One of my neighbors on my street still this January 28, 2010 has a visible and physically displayed Christmas tree showing at their main bay window and I see at each night when I walk the dogs. I'm not complaining, cause it is their business, but I'm just wondering. I think to recall that they set the tree up around the beginning of November and remember that they were the first ones on the street that had lights shining brightly welcoming the joy of the electric season. And now it's the end of January. Christmas and the Day of Kings both have come and gone. Am I missing something? I'm just curious. Does anyone know of such a thing called a Valentine tree?

Anyway so much for Christmas trees, now to continue on with my transcription work.

The first document today is from the Grenada Register of Records 1797 to 1817, (v. G2-R2), Item 5. This short document was downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563328] and appears to be an assignment of the power of attorney from one Andrew Smith who is acting on behalf of a client who had previously given him power of attorney. It is confusing, but then again so is any of the legal jargon. Previous reference was made to Andrew Smith, who I believe is the same one as mentioned in Part 187s.  As far as I can read there is no hint of connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Following are the images of the two pages 286 and 287:

Part 188s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1805 George Smith

26 January 2010

Evening,

And at times there are two Records that appear in the Grenada Register of Records that are connected. This is the case of the next two documents both entered 30 April 1807. The documents are, from what I can read, dated 14 April 1805, 15 April 1805, and 12 April 1807.

My source is the microfilm FHL [1563328] and Item 5, of the Register of Records 1797-1817 (v. G2-R2).

The Smith in these documents is one George Smith, Esquire, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Judicative for the Island of Grenada at the dates on record in 1805 and 1807. As far as I can read, and transcribe I do not see any explicit clue that would connect George Smith to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The documents of pages 268, 269 and 270 follow:

My Tangent – The Dog Bit Me, Then I Bit Me

Afternoon,

And my dentist didn’t believe my story, as he fit me for a replacement crown. As I said, “My dog bit me… then I bit me!” How else would I describe the puncture marks in my right hand and the pieces of broken tooth in my left? And I’m really now going to wonder how my insurance companies are going to handle this one. Red tape, request denied. Appeal, then appeal… It was an act of dog!

I began the work on my new website, Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt, which is going to be found at www.genealogyatreasurehunt.com. Nothing's downloaded as yet, so please do not try to follow the URL address. I’ve been working on the front page. I’ve made sure that my Blog will be attached. I’ve created a draft of the relationships of links and I’m trying to make sure that it is something that’ll be easy to navigate. My expectations are that this will be my form of archiving and grouping the tremendous amount of genealogy and ancestry material that I have and continue to amass.

If you have any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions feel free to contact me.

And of course my eyes are more crossed than ever. The new set of Indentures and Records from the Grenada Register seem to have a new scribe, with a smaller handwriting style. The next two includes one George Smith who was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court circa 1805.

Andy’s finishing the stippling to the forth-coming quilt. I’m really happy about the design of this one, ADII. Just wait ‘til you see it.

More to follow,

Enjoy,

My Tangent – Up and Squirrels

24 January 2010

Evening,

I really got into the movie Up as the continuous and immediate distraction “Squirrel” is so, so true.

Grey has been at it again. (See My Tangents on December 2 and December 13. And he’s got the Rats, Tinker and Bella just a screaming, albeit yapping, back-and-forth, forth-and-back every two minutes.

At time you can just transpose into the minute brains of the Rats and you can see the gears ticking.

I’ve got my toy. Squirrel! Yap, yap, yap. My that water is nice. Squirrel! Yap, yap, yap. Time to relax… Squirrel! Yap, yap, yap. And I can watch Grey. He just sits well out of their reach in the branches overhanging the back yard. Squirrel! Yap, yap, yap.

A word of advice to my readers, regarding the Indenture and Report Transcription project… I would suggest skimming over, unless you are really interested, the transcription work. In my short notes on a Posting page that may have a transcription, I try to address my observations and my quick thoughts. I’m not telling you not to read my transcriptions; I’m just saying that after a while they become bloody boring, unless there may be some immediate connection to an ancestry connection. And also, please save your trees, they all do not have to be printed. All-things-being-equal this work should be remaining in the Clouds even long after I’ve gone.

And it was quiet for a little bit. You know… Squirrel, yap, yap, yap. And Tinker’s gone a running. Oh and that’s the 11-pounder who attacked me savagely last night…

Enjoy,

Part 187s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1806 Andrew Smith

Afternoon,

And to continue my indenture and record transcription project, I am still working on those documents from the Grenada Register of Records. My source is from one microfilm FHL [1563328].

There are from my finding, I believe 33 microfilm reels in this specific collection the Registers of Records, 1764-1931, of the Supreme Court of Grenada.

As I am searching for clues to the very existence of my ggg-grandfather James Smith, the senior, I have been loosely restricting myself to those records which may have been entered to the Registers between the years from 1764 through about 1850 and which contains any entry of the surname Smith. My present count is about 13 microfilms. And I am still only on the first one, FHL [1563328], Register of Records 1797-1817 (v. G2-R2).

Each microfilm is subdivided into Items or Chapters. To date I have transcribed Items 1 through 4. Last night I began on the first Record from Item 5.

The mention of a Smith in this Record is that of one Andrew Smith. He appears to be an Attorney who is located in London, England and is about to or has already departed for Grenada and the West Indies. The date of the Power of Attorney is 19 November 1806.

From the information that I can glean from this record there is no concrete evidence that there is any genealogical connection to my ggg-grandfather James.

Here are the three pages, images; 177, 178, and 179 of the document.

And here is my transcription. A “?” attached to a word is a transcription that I am not sure of, and a “_____” represents a word that I cannot make out.

My Tangent - Teeth - Thoughts and Changes

Morning,

Does anyone know of any adaptation to the idiom “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”? Well as of last night I do. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, or he might bite himself!

Tinker, the rescued Rat Terrier may have been abused somewhat prior to arriving at our house. And then again it just may be one of her many quirks. She initially, after we took her in, would wake up from a deep sleep with a start and a scream and then she would bite. And that was over a year ago. Well she had calmed down and stopped biting... or so I thought.

Last night, all 11 pounds of her was asleep beside me when I was awakened to a pair of fangs and set of canines piercing my right hand. I’m the one who screamed, at 3:30 in the morning. And the next thing I knew I had bit down so hard that I broke one of my own teeth, I think one of my caps.

So there I was, bloody hand and spitting out broken bits of tooth, trying to clean up and remain calm. And when I awoke this morning, who should be cuddled up beside me… that’s right Tinker the Terrier, the Terror Thumb Tearer and Tooth-Trasher of Tampa.

I certainly appreciate everyone’s thoughts and comments about the changes that I’ve made to my Blog, Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt. And I can say more are on the way. The majority of the requests have to do with how you navigate through the Blog. Some of you are interested in the different individual Genealogies and some of you are interested in our Quilts.

And I’ve noticed that traffic has increased since I began my Blog last May. This is great. The average of number pages visited has now hit at 25 pages a day. Thank you.

The next change, on the horizon, will be your ability to easily access the past information that you are interested. And this access will be on PC, Notebook, Laptop or Mobile. All-things-being-equal I hope to be able to set up the navigation on the Blog coupled with a Website that will be interesting, appealing, and easy to use. Please send me your suggestions.

My goal is not so much as to present, as I’ve written before, a series of begats, but more to allow you to be able to be a part of my own work, search, and research. My work in Genealogy is such that I get a kick in just that, the working and research of genealogy. And thanks to all of you who have been sending me suggestions and ideas, and your thoughts and assistance.

Oh and by the way, I didn't bite down on Tinker. I bit down, or up on me.

Enjoy,

Part 186p – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1809 Birth – GGG-Grandfather John Parker

23 January 2010

Evening,

At sometimes I get very lucky.

Downham from St. Leonard's Churchyard
Image Source: Bill Boaden / CC BY-SA 2.0

Following my Parker Family search project and subsequent to Part 185pw in the FHL microfilm FHL [1278942] in Item 7 in the Parish Registers for Downham, 1653-1900, of the Church of England, Chapelry of Downham of Lancashire, I discovered a barely legible copy of the page containing the Baptismal Entry of ggg-grandfather John Parker.

The copy of the page from the Parish Register of the Baptism Entry follows:

And my transcription of the highlighted entry is:
1809
July
28? John Son of William and Mary Parker Downham
born May 28th . _____

Apart from the fact that the image of the page is extremely blurred, I am having a difficult time making out the word the follows the phrase “born May 28th.” I’m not sure if it a word that is crossed out or underlined, and if it is applicable to the entry. Anybody have any suggests?

I have updated the Parker Descendant Chart and have included it in this posting. I will also, shortly be adding it to the “Robertson Chart” link at the top of my Blog page.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 185pw – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1808 Marriage – GGGG-Grandparents William Parker and Mary Walker

Afternoon,

And as I have written, who knows what may turn up just around the bend… or in this case just around the turn of the microfilm reel.

One of the projects that I have been working on is that of trying to gather the pertinent and associated documentation for my maternal line as it relates to my mtDNA. My Haplogroup is H1a1. This is my maternal DNA that traces from me from my mother, née Robertson; from her mother, my grandmother Madge (née Goodey) Robertson; from her mother, my great-grandmother Mary Alice (née Crossley) Crossley; from her mother, my gg-grandmother Elizabeth (née Kendal) Parker; from her mother, my possible ggg-grandmother Isabella (née unknown) Kendal. You can read my initial writing at My Tangent dated 9 November 2009.

Accordingly the Kendal and Parker research that I am conducting centers near Clitheroe and Downham in Lancashire in England. And with that I discovered an FHL microfilm [1278942] which may offer some of the data that I am looking for.

In Item 10 of the microfilm of the documents, Parish Registers for Downham, 1653-1900, Church of England, Chapelry of Downham, Lancashire I came across, apart from others, the possible 1808 Marriage Registration for gggg-grandparents William and Mary (née Walker) Parker. And gggg-grandmother Mary’s maiden name Walker is a new find. The date of their marriage is 30 January 1808 at the Chapel of the Parish of Downham.

Here’s the highlighted page and entry –

And my transcription –
Page 18

This Marriage was ʃolemnized between Us { William X Parker’s Mark, Mary X Walker’s Mark

And following this I was able to find the 23 July 1809 Birth Registration of who appears to be their eldest son, ggg-grandfather John Parker.

I’ll be updating the Parker Descendant Chart after I post ggg-grandfather John’s Birth Entry. Stay tuned.

Part 184b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1890 & 1891 Birth Registrations – Harry & Blanche M. Brunhammer

22 January 2010

Evening,

And we get two for the price of one.

US Census Bureau map of Gloucester City, New Jersey. Image Source: Wikipedia.

I shocked myself when I began working on the Gloucester City, New Jersey Birth Registration Entry for Andy’s grandfather Harry Brunhammer. Last night when I downloaded the image for the Birth Registration from the microfilm FHL [494216] I was working on only grandfather Harry’s documentation. As I was piecing the two parts together due to the fact that the complete image was too large for the Minolta scanner, I noted that the first Entry was that for grandfather Harry’s 1st cousin (or Andy’s 1st cousin 2-times removed) Blanche M. Brunhammer.

The series of 290 microfilms held at the FHL are the microfilms of the original records and indexes at the New Jersey State Library in Trenton. The above-referenced microfilm FHL [494216] is titled, Births Atlantic-Essex v. 34 1890-1891.

Grandfather Harry’s Birth Entry is dated 5 February 1891 and his cousin Blanche M.’s is dated 29 July 1890. Their fathers, Eugene and Julius (aka Geies, Jules), were their fathers, respectively.

Part 183b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1890 Marriage – Eugene Brunhammer & Anne Walsh

Morning,

And the monsoon season is back. The street flooded last night and as the washing machine went on the fritz, I’ll have to get out my backup washer. I can see myself in the street with a wash-board.

Oh well. (Sorry, not intended to be a pun.)

Yesterday I stumbled on a prize; the 1890 Marriage Registration of Andy’s great-grandparents Eugene Brunhammer and Anne Walsh. After a few years of searching and digging the Brunhammer Family Genealogy, more and more of the pieces, albeit documents, are turning up.

A series of FHL microfilms, actually 290 reels provide the Records of births, marriages, and deaths of New Jersey for the years 1848 through 1900.

The actual microfilm is FHL [495709] is Marriages Atlantic-Hudson v. 18 1889-1890.

The page image was too large for the Minolta scanner so I had to cut it into two parts and save two images. I then them together as best as I could using Corel Draw and was able to produce a single image of the Registration. Please excuse the shading at the join as I did not work on the gradients of gray for each piece. Here’s the highlighted page from the Register.

As best as I can read from this Entry, it appears that the date of great-grandparents Eugene and Anne (née Walsh) Brunhammer’s wedding was Tuesday, 27 May 1890.

And following this discovery I came upon, in another New Jersey Register the Birth Registration of Grandfather Harry Brunhammer. Stay-tuned as I have to do a similar type of piecing job.

Enjoy,

My Tangent – How Boring Is Genealogy?

21 January 2010

funny animated gif Morning,

After listening and talking to a few friends and family members these past couple of days I had to ask the question “How boring is genealogy?” You know, unless you are the one bitten by the genealogy bug and doing the hands-on research and the searching, nine times out of 10 listening to someone drone on about genealogy is bloody boring. 10 years ago I would've given that same answer. I would have said diplomatically and very polite "That's very nice", while thinking; “Damn I'm tired” and then stifle the yawn.

So how does one go about writing a blog about genealogy and life family ancestry research that may appeal to the general reader? How do you make the study of ancestry much more than a droll compendium of names, begats, and dates? What would make a reader to set a perpetual link to your blog and want to check back time and time again for an update?

I think a part of it has to do with the mystery and format of how the details and information are presented. Top-level keep it short. Too much information is overwhelming, not to the aficionado of genealogy but to the lay reader who may or may not have a passing interest. An individual blog posting, newsletter or website article should contain itself to one topic… one idea, or one person. And one has to remember to keep it simple.

Keep it as simple as possible. I’m not implying that the genealogist or researcher may be light-years ahead of the reader or listener, but because the reader, who may be interested at the moment, takes time to grasp the information and data and then takes more time trying to assimilate the details into the complexity of their own thinking processes.

The first and foremost question that I believe the reader may ask is “How am I related to this person that is being discussed?” That alone requires a complex construction within an individual’s capabilities. The listener or reader is trying to determine from whom within their own immediate family the subject originates.

And with that statement I’ll stop right here… I just realized that I could write on for miles and miles, of Internet bytes, but I stop right here and be back with more thought, bit by bit, and I’m sorry but that is a bad pun…

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent – New Pages and Easier Navigation!

Good early morning,

I just found out that Google Blogger has added the capability of additional pages. If you look right below the main header – Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt… you’ll see that I have immediately added four tabs or links. The four are:
  • Smith Charts,
  • Robertson Charts,
  • Brunhammer Charts, and
  • Doherty Charts.
You can click on any of them and you will be able to see a page with corresponding family charts and diagrams.

Hurrah! This should help you find a Descendant Chart or a family-related diagram with much more ease. As you can see I have created the four main family groups, so please note that any family associated with each main family group will appear on that specific page.

These pages are still in construction and there may be some glitches.

One main glitch is the “Click here to continue reading…” at the bottom of each page, at present does not function. I have not included any additional data or info to each of the Chart Pages. You should be able to click on any chart or diagram to increase its size.

I will eventually be changing the left-hand green column once I am satisfied that the new function is working well. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or questions.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 182s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Indenture Research - 1804 Danl Smith

20 January 2010

Morning again,

And I go to sleep dreaming of large, dusty register books, and I wake up and immediately my fingers are typing a new transcription.

I hit an “Aha!” moment this morning. No, I haven’t discovered a connection in my search of the genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith, but I did realize that after all the practice that I have had these past couple of weeks in transcribing the script and legalese of the records from the Grenada Register of Records that I am able to anticipate the construction and wording of a document. I’m able to ascertain what may have been faded or overcome by years of grime and age on the page.

This morning’s first transcription does not necessarily bring me any closer to discovering the ancestry of ggg-grandfather James Smith but I am able to find a new Smith entry. This Smith is one Danl Smith who is a witness to the document. The other witness is a George Toppin. And just a quick note, I think I remember that my father, who was born in Grenada, had an acquaintance whose surname was Toppin.

It was mentioned to me yesterday that the name George Wilson, as found in Part 178s was also a name from Grenada connected to my father. The take home message – there may be any type of clue and or some associated connection in the body of these documents that may point to a possibility in the genealogy hunt.

This record is an image from the microfilm FHL [1563328] in Item 4 – Grenada Register of Records 1797-1817 (v. G2-R2).
