Part 254s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 Richard Oliver Smith – Once Again

31 March 2010

Early Evening,

You would think that I would get bored from all these transcriptions… I do. But it’s the old adage, of sorts, “you can’t leave no stone unturned”.

And I wouldn’t believe it if I was not me. But just after I wrote the phrase “you can’t leave no stone unturned”, I thought that I would try and find out, albeit surf, from whence that phrase came from. Look at what I found! I’m totally in shock! Check out who the artist is. Leave No Stone Unturned.

Source of image: Lifting stones to assess a fisherman's capability in Djupalonsandur in Iceland.

The next Record from the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2.) and Item 8 of the microfilm FHL [1563329] is pertinent to Richard Oliver Smith. That’s right, no hint of the origins of ggg-grandfather James.

And the Document on pages 267 and 268

Part 253s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 Richard Oliver Smith, and Again

Afternoon,

I spent the day transcribing. My first Record is attributed to Richard Oliver Smith, dated 24 June 1833. Again there is no connection, hint, or clue of ggg-grandfather James Smith. I feel like a scribe.

This Record, a Bill of Sale, is from pages 266 and 267 of the volume of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2.). The Document image is from Item 8 the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Part 252s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1832 Richard Oliver Smith Again

Evening again,

And the work continues. The next Smith-related Record of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2) is dated 3 October 1832 and entered 2 November 1832. The Smith highlighted is Richard Oliver Smith. Once again there is no blatant clue as to the possibility of a genealogy or ancestry connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith. This Record is downloaded from Item 8 of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

30 March 2010

Evening,

Tonight’s supper, scallops with pancetta and leeks in lemon butter sauce and rice with five grains. Quick easy and very good.

I spent some time yesterday working on my Transcription Project in my continued search for the genealogy and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. My first transcription is of a Bill of Sale by Richard Oliver Smith. And as mentioned previously, I have not found any hint of a connection to ggg-grandfather James.

The date of the Bill of Sale is 1 November 1832 and entered to the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2) on 2 November 1832. The Record is downloaded from Item 8 of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Part 250s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smiths from Logie, Scotland – Investigation Continued

29 March 2010

Afternoon,

The sun is shining, but the temperature has dropped somewhat.

And here’s the thing, if the Smiths from Logie, located in the then County of Perth, in Scotland are our ancestors it is perceivable that we could realize a genealogy and an ancestry back to about the 1660s, give or take a few years. On the other hand if there is no connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith, I guess I look for another Smith line… and I’ve done someone else’s work for them.

Today’s work and research is a continuation of the same from Part 178s and Part 248s. I’m trying to see if there are any connections to the Jameses and William Smiths from Logie in Scotland.

From the Old Parochial Records of Logie I have been able to construct a possible Smith line and include the related generations of a family that overlays approximately 100 years. I have been able to get a hold of the majority of the Baptism and Marriage entries from the Old Parochial Registers of Logie. I have also worked the other Smith entries available in the Old Parochial Records of Logie.

This Descendant Chart shows the Smith family as I have been able to construct it from the records. The red-highlighted individuals are the Jameses and the Williams.

I’ve attempted to create the generational connects, as follows:
  1. William Smith and Janet Rob had seven children. Charles was their eldest and was baptised 22 November 1695.
  2. Their youngest son, James Smith, was baptised 16 March 1711.
  3. James, baptised 16 March 1711, married Margaret Reid 4 June 1733.
  4. James and Margaret’s eldest son, James was baptised 20 January 1734.
  5. James and Margaret had two sons named William, one baptised 2 May 1736. Their youngest son, also named William was baptised 20 July 1753.
  6. James Smith Jr., who for all apparent reasons appears to be the James who was baptised 20 January 1734, married Isable McFarlane.
  7. James Jr. and Isable eldest son was James who was baptised 19 April 1767.
  8. The blue-highlighted individuals are Charles Smith. I believe it was this Charles who is the identified “Wright” in the 19 May 1733 Banns of James Smith and Margaret Reid.
Now in the 26 December 1797 Record entered into the Grenada Register of Records on 7 June 1803, see Part 178s, it is possible to say that the James Smith of Logie who is identified as a “Weaver” and who is searching for the estates of his late brother William and his late son, James, may be the James Smith (aka James Smith Jr.) who was baptised 20 January 1734. Mathematically, that would make, at the time, James Smith the weaver about 63 years old and his late brother William at least 44 years old. Also this James, (aka James Smith Jr.), Smith’s son would have been somewhere about 30 years old.

And I know this is a lot to take in… but here is where I’m at, at the moment. In my continuation of this I will present some other thoughts. But please feel free to comment, ask questions, and add something that I may have overlooked.

Oh and by the way, here is the Smith worksheet, which includes my extracts from the Old Parochial Records of Logie.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 248s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smiths from Logie, County of Perth, Scotland - Investigation

27 March 2010

Afternoon,

Today I’m working on some entry finds from the Old Parochial Records of Logie of the County of Perth in Scotland, as a follow up to the work I began in Part 178s. The records which were found in the Grenada Register of Records 1797 - 1817 (v. G2-R2) from Item 3 in the microfilm FHL [1563328] prove a relationship of one James Smith, a brother William Smith, and his son James Smith.
Inserted 2007 Map of Logie, Scotland

My analysis work does not necessarily prove that there is a definitive connection between GGG-Grandfather James Smith and the three Smiths of, what I'm calling, the Logie record. I am attempting to search for and see if there may be a genealogy and ancestry relationship. To date I have been able to find at least 38 pages from the Old Parochial Records of Logie, that are Smith related. The Old Parochial Records include baptisms, banns, and marriages.

From the Logie records and the relationship of the three men, James Smith, his deceased brother William, and his deceased son James, I think I have found parochial entries that may, and then again may not, be applicable.

I located three James Smiths in the Logie Old Parochial Records that appear to fit the parameters. There also appears to be a relationship between the three James Smiths; father, son, and grandson. All-things-being-equal, these Smith could be of the same generation of GGG-Grandfather James, or maybe one generation removed.

The first, of interest, is of a James Smith who married a Margaret Reid on 4 June 1733 at Logie. According to the Banns there are two more Smiths included in the entry; William Smith, Schoolmaster and Charles Smith, Wright. And of course my eyes immediately focused on the word “Wright”. All things being equal this James Smith could be either the Smith at the top of “Possible Smith Descendant Chart” of the James Smith, the Weaver.

Here is the page of the Banns and the Marriage entry from the Old Parochial Register for Logie, 1688 to 1855. It was found in Item 2 of the microfilm FHL [1040124].

My transcription --
May 29th, 1733 Saturday
The which day James Smith and Margaret Reid both in
this parish enrolled their names to be proclaimed in order
to Marriage, and William Smith Schoolmaster in Logie be
came Cautioner for their person’s which is ten shilling sterling
Before these witnesses John Bryce cordiner in Blair and
Charles Smith Wright in Logie & C.
June 4, 1733 Monday
The which day James Smith and Margaret Reid
both in this parish were married.
Mr. Patrick Drichal minister.
This is quite a bit to take in and I will pause here and continue in my next posting. I will then present the eight children of James and Margaret (née Reid) Smith.

Enjoy,

Part 247j – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1878 GG-Grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July – Death Registration From Cayenne

26 March 2010

Greetings,

The National Archives of Outre-Mer are finally up online. Thanks to Yann for keeping in touch and we’ve been waiting for this moment for a couple of years. The Registry Records for French Guiana and our July plus genealogy and ancestry are now available. Hurrah!!! Would anyone like some French stamps?

Inserted image - Town Hall, Cayenne, French Guiana.

The records are viewable via the Internet and the image copies are tremendous. The Home Page to IREL ANOM, the online Archives of the French Colonies can be accessed at this link. And it is in French.

The first document and entry I was able to find was the 1878 Death Registration for gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July.

From my understanding of the French documentary requirements birth, marriage, and death registrations are supposed to be recorded at three locations: Nationally at Paris; at the Department level, in this case Outre-Mer; and locally at the place, as at Cayenne in French Guiana. Whether this was a consistent practice is beyond my knowledge, but I am always on the look-out for at least three possible registrations and/or documents relating to a vital event.

In my Posting Part 36,

I was able to provide, with Annie’s help the National Registration entry of gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July’s death. This one, including the Index is from the Cayenne, Guyanne Registry. It was found on the online Outre-Mer Archives.

Salutations,

My Tangent - The Feline Wars - A New July Discovery - And Quesadilla Pie

25 March 2010

Morning,

This morning I checked the battlefield. No feline mercenary destruction. And there appears to be three sprouting beans. Jack I’m not, but I feel like I’ve set up a battle-zone comparable to the Plains of Abraham. Trenches are dug. The black pepper cover is set. A spy nest has been craftily erected at the bathroom window. The recruits have been brought in. And the troops of marauding quadrupeds are itching for their hourly attack and romp. Now we’ll have peas and beans!

Yesterday I think I transcribed the longest Record from the Grenada Registers of Records yet. I wonder if I had become a lawyer I would speak and write in repetition. But at least I’ve finished the work on Item 7. Only one more Item left, number 8 and about five or six documents from the microfilm FHL [1563329]. I think that the next set of Records that I’ll be working on will be FHL [1563330]

Hurrah for Yann. He has discovered some documents at the ANOM Archives pertaining to great-grandaunt Marie Amélia Blanche (née July) Poupon. One of the documents is her 1879 Marriage Registration to Laurent Théodore Amand Ludonier Poupon. I thought my name was long. And the answer is I do not know, but I prefer it to the other type.

Check out our new Quilts SB blog site. To date, I’m amazed at our current ranking of 17 of the top Quilting websites by Top Listed.net. Not bad for being open for only 13 days. This morning Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt was ranked number 5 out of the top 50.

Last night's supper was a chicken quesadilla pie. The ingredients included shredded leftover chicken, jalapeños, cilantro, cheddar cheese, flour, baking soda, eggs, salt, pepper, milk, and more cheese. Sort of a twist on a quiche and a frittata. And now I'm looking for ideas for a Kabocha Squash.

Now back to my work and transcriptions.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 246s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1822 to 1832 George, Samuel, John, Abel, Samuel George, and George Robert Smith

24 March 2010

fternoon, for the second time, and the sun is shining…

My genealogy and ancestry link and connection research for my ggg-grandfather James Smith just gets more and more lengthy and definitely a wee bit more complicated. The following Smith-related Record from the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2) is one of five Records from Item 8 of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

There are six Smiths who are mentioned in this Record but only one Smith, a George Smith appears to be the critical part of concern. Is this the same George Smith as previously mentioned in my Postings: Part 199s; Part 200s; Part 202s; and Part 203s? I don’t know. There is no specific evidence that could indicate the one and the same. Also, there may a slight possibility that this George Smith could be a son of ggg-grandfather James Smith as briefly mentioned in his Last Will and Testament. (See Part 61s.) Other than this there is no definite hint as to the genealogy or origins of ggg-grandfather James.

This new Record is a long document and it is of eight pages; 75 through and including 82. This Record could be a Power of Attorney and it does get somewhat confusing, especially with the number of persons and names involved. It is long and I did find myself dozing at times as I was just getting “brain-twisted” with all the legal jargon and phrases.

Here are images of the pages 75 through and including 82:

Part 245s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study Matrix Update

Afternoon,

I’ve updated the Smith Indenture Study Matrix. I have now completed Items 1 through 7 transcriptions of the Smith-related Records that I have been able to download from the microfilm FHL [1563329]. This microfilm is a copy of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2).

Please note that I have not segregated the Posting numbers by unique individuals.

I have only listed the singular Smith names. In other words, there may be more than one individual with the same name, for example, Andrew Smith. I have only recorded those names as single entries if and only if there is a unique prefix or suffix added to the name. For example, James Smith and James Smith, Junior each are represented on single lines of the Matrix. The listed Smith may or may not be the same individual but the transcribed Record(s) may not have any clues or hints as to that fact.

In order to see a specific Part, please enter the Part number, e.g. Part 244s, into the “Search This Blog” box. You can also see a copy of this Matrix at my Analysis Page.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Part 244s - Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1831 John Charles Smith

23 March 2010

Afternoon,

And I have reached another mile stone, more sort of a mile paper, in my genealogy and ancestry research and my Transcription Project. Today’s Transcription is the final Smith-related one in Item 7 of the Grenada Registers of Records of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

The inserted image is Jackson Pollock’s Number 7, 1951, found at the National Gallery of Art.

This Record concerns one John Charles Smith and to date this is my first encounter, in my work of this individual. I do not have any entry or any cross-reference in my genealogy to this name. There is also no apparent hint or clue as to a relationship to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The copies of pages 581 and 582 –
