Part 738p – Smith Groh Genealogy – 1910 Census – GGGG Grandparents William H. and Arvilla L. Placeway - Pinckney, Michigan

I have spent the day, apart from attacking the jungle that is slowly creeping from the conservation area behind our house, searching and researching documentation specific to our Placeway Family Line.

Yesterday's street flooding reached the highest yet. I think I have to find a deal on a good gondola.

GGG-Grandfather Brayton C. Placeway’s parents were CK’s GGGG-Grandparents William H. and Arvilla L. Placeway.

First on the docket of complimentary data and information is the 1910 US Census from Pinckney Village of Putnam Township in the County of Livingston, Michigan. GGGG-Grandparents William H. and Arvilla L. Placeway’s home was on Unadilla Street.

Not that I consider myself uninformed, I had no clue of the street name, “Unadilla”. And I had to look it up… From Wikipedia, the word Unadilla is derived from an Iroquois word for “meeting place”. How apropos… There are similar locations called Unadilla in California, Georgia, Nebraska, New York, and of course, Michigan. There is also a Unadilla snout moth.

And back to the genealogy at hand. Here is the image of the 1910 US Census in which I have highlighted gggg-grandparents William H. and Arvilla L. Placeway.

The source is The National Archives: Thirteenth Census of the United States, 1910 (NARA microfilm publication T624, 1, 1,178 rolls) from the Records of the Bureau of the Census, Records Group 29 in Washington, DC. I have downloaded the actual copy from the Ancestry.com 1910 United States Census Federal Census online database.

Part 711p - Smith Groh Genealogy – The Mystery of Brayton C. Placeway - 1906 Detroit

Good Day,

And my genealogy hunt continues to understand the life and times of ggg-grandfather Brayton C. Placeway... and continues.

Last night I stumbled across, through Genealogy Bank, a couple of articles, actually minuscule notices from a couple of newspapers. All-things-being-equal they each had to have something to do with ggg-grandfather Brayton.

The first is from the 19 July 1906 issue of the Pinckney Dispatch.

If this is ggg-grandfather Brayton, the Local News blurb writes that he is visiting his parents. It indicates that he now, at 18 years old, is living in Detroit, Michigan about 60 miles away from his parents, gggg-grandparents William and Arvilla (nee Spaulding)Placeway.

A couple of facts can be extrapolated from the news note. This include:

1. Pinckney, Michigan is where ggg-grandfather Brayton and his twin brother, ggg-granduncle Clayton were born.

2. GGGG-Grandfather William Placeway did not pass away, as yet, until 1911, when he was visiting one of his daughters in Iowa.

My question - What was ggg-grandfather Brayton C. Placeway doing in Detroit? Guess I'll have to keep searching and research more documents and data bits.

Social notes from city and town newspapers are sometimes a great place to find a small detail(s) of an ancestor's life.

Part 689p – Smith Groh Genealogy – The Mystery of Brayton C. Placeway – 1888 Birth Registrations

In Genealogy research, one day the documentary pickings are dry, and the next, you just don’t have enough time in a given 24 hours to keep up with the onslaught. In this day and age the question is which of the many online doorways I venture past to see if my information and data is there. Last night I opened a door (albeit a link) at Family Search and there, even though I wasn’t looking for the exact register pages guess what I found.

The secret to my genealogy search and research is to look under every nook and cranny, open every door and gateway, so-to-speak. I try not to limit myself to only just one, in this case, online service.

Even though there are reams and reams of paper and old books and portfolios just stacked on shelves in some deep and dimly lit basement that have not made it into the elusive Cloud, somewhere in place and time, the modern offensive of technological acquisition seems to bring a new set of finds daily.

This time from Family Search, and the extensive program of digitizing the collections of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I have chanced upon a gem of a find. Last night I discovered the Birth Registration of the twin brothers, ggg-grandfather Brayton C. and ggg-granduncle Clayton C. Placeway. The original document pages are at the Michigan Department of Vital Records, Lansing, Michigan.

This document is in the Collection – Michigan, Births, 1867-1902; DGS Film Number 4204545. (The DGS is the Digital Folder Number.) Included in the Collection are 137 microfilms of which the one that has the Placeway Births Registrations is FHL [2321094].

At present and according to Family Search there are 164,866 images of pages in this Collection which, I would tender to guess that the work at digitizing all 137 microfilms is still in progress.

Part 671p – Groh Smith Genealogy – Updated and Divided Placeway Descendant Chart – The Cloud Does NOT Have All The Answers

I continue my journey into the reaches and discovery of the Placeway Family Line… specifically that of soon-to-be great-great-great-grandfather Brayton C. Placeway. All-things-being-equal I have chanced upon, in the Cloud, notation, information, and data back until the 7-times great-grandparents Robert and Mehitable (née Hamilton) Placeway (aka Plaiceway).

And here is where I most certainly do NOT “throw caution to the wind”.

As you know A Genealogy Hunt is my journal.

It is the chronicle of my work and effort to search and research those branches and family lines and ancestors that are in some way connected. But I have to keep reiterating to myself “Prenez garde!” I need to ensure that I check all sources of information and data. I need to ask myself “And where did that piece of newsflash come from?” There is a great deal of data and information, via the Internet, that is not sourced nor cited. And further I want to know “Where the hell did that bit of detail come from?”

Information discovered on the Internet, aka extracted from the Cloud, is a great stepping-stone. It is that nugget that can either provide the answer, or lead you through a doorway that may provide you with the sources that you are searching.

My work and efforts in the realm of genealogy lead me down many paths. Each doorway is a panorama of that which passed by in a brief moment of time.

With the newly added figures to my original Placeway Descendant Chart, I have had to divide the single Chart into two… otherwise I will have to provide a bevy of magnifying glasses for all readers. Here are the new Placeway Descendant Charts I and II.

The Placeway Descendant Chart I now includes the conceivable addition of 7-times great-grandparents Robert and Mehitable (née Hamilton) Placeway and of 6-times great-grandparents William and Mercy (aka Mary) (née Robbins) Placeway.

The Placeway Descendant Chart II includes the conceivable addition of ggg-grandfather Brayton C. Placeway’s second wife Johanna Plischke.

Part 670p – Groh Smith Genealogy – A New Placeway Descendant Chart

Good Day,

As promised I have now created a new Placeway Descendant Chart. This Chart creates a clearer picture of the genealogy as accredited to the Placeway Family Line.

I have been gathering a considerable amount of information and data, and I am currently chasing down source documentation to ensure the accuracy of the details. It is all a part of A Genealogy Hunt.

As you can see in the Placeway Descendant Chart any new information and updated data has been added in red. I have also now included the actual blood line, which I am currently researching. The symbols are bordered in blue and filled in yellow. This provides me a “quick-glance” tool when I refer to the visual of the Descendant Chart.

Also please note that this information and data is always under construction. It may change as I am presented with more and more correct source documentation. I usually begin with family history, lore, and hearsay, which may include a pedigree that I may find on the Internet. I then try to locate source documentation to give “credence” to the data and information.

Check back regularly for additions, changes, and updates.

Part 669mp – Groh Smith Genealogy – New Information and Updated Miller Descendant Chart

Good Day,

No rest for the obsessed…and at times I need a wee bit of motivational inspiration.

Sometimes I wish, without a Ouija board, that the ancestors in my genealogy search and research would just reach out and say… “Hey Smith, you’re on the right path!”

Definitely would be nice.

And I continue the gathering and collecting of information, data and details for the new Groh Smith Genealogy.

Last night I decided to hone in on the Placeway Family Line.

I believe I discovered a tremendous amount of data and possible evidence of great-great-great-grandfather Brayton C. Placeway. This not only includes his ancestors, but if the information is correct it certainly reveals a glimpse into his life and occupations.

As I check up on the details and the possible sources, I have updated my Miller Descendant Chart.

Note that all new and updated data, from my previous Descendant Chart has been added in red. This Chart will soon change as the number of ancestors to be included has increased exponentially. Going forward you will soon see a new Miller Descendant Chart and a new Placeway Descendant Chart.
