My Tangent - Out Damn Ghost!

Good Afternoon,

Well here’s the story concerning my PC. The motherboard gave up the ghost.

From what I’ve read and sort of understand, a motherboard may hardly ever breakdown, but there are a number of forces that can cause one to do so. These forces coupled together, as in my case, include extreme power capacity, electric surges from a power source, and dust, and dog hair. There are a number of other issues that are minor, but can also add to the problem. Well it happened to me. Also a number of kicks in of extra power of the faulty external drive further impacted this situation. Solution - new motherboard, and I should be getting my desktop back soon.

I’ve been using my notebook for work on the 1836 Birth Registration of ggg-grandmother Catherine Cora (nee Merle) July. I am somewhat frustrated using only one monitor and a miss some of the software that I have on my desktop. But all in all it is working, just at a slower pace. Check out my next Posting.

And of course the delay is holding up my genealogy search and research for the origins of ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Part 377s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Indenture Research - 1810 Archibald, James, John, and James, Jr. Smith

Evening,

I continue my Transcription Project. This time in the search for the origins and genealogy of ggg-grandfather James Smith I am working on the transcription of a 9 October 1810 Indenture entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 29 January 1816.

There are four Smiths noted in this Record: Alexander; James; John; and James Junior. As far as my research has taken me thus far I would venture to say that even though there are two James Smiths, there does not appear to be a relative connection to ggg-grandfather James.

This group of Smiths may be of the same Smiths of Jordanhill, Scotland. All-things-being-equal these four Smiths may and can be paired with individuals indicated in my Smiths of Jordanhill, Scotland Descendant Chart.

The discussion of the Indenture concerns, I believe, the sale/transfer of properties in the Parish of Saint Andrew. The transactions are between one Ferdinand De Creeft and Alexander Smith et al. The inserted map is a highlighted area of the Parish of Saint Andrew and the possible locations of the named plantations and estates. The map is a segment I captured with the software SnagIt from Gavin Smith’s 1801 publication, Map of the Island of Grenada.

Part 376j - Smith Robertson Genealogy - 1822 Pierre Alphonse July - Birth

Good Afternoon,

I am discovering the joys of Ubuntu. This early morning I began a database to record the FHL microfilms and microfiche that I have ordered, reviewed, and are currently on hold for my search and research into my family history, ancestry, and genealogy. I know it is a key point for me to keep myself organized. I do not live down the street from the tremendous source of material, data, and documentation of the Family History Library. I want to make sure that once I order a reference I do not “willy-nilly” order it again... obviously without due cause.

My next family member of whom I have had the chance to find his Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration is that of gg-granduncle Pierre Alphonse July. Per the Ten-Year Tables his birth was registered 23 January 1822.

And from the information that I have, he was the eldest son of ggg-grandfather Jean François July and his first wife, Françoise Poujeaux. He was senior to gg-grandfather Jean Jacques Alfred July by approximately 11 years.

There is indication of two elder July sisters to gg-granduncle Pierre Alphonse July who may have died at birth or in infancy. I found this information on the Family Search database and the International Genealogical Index but there is no corroborating or usable source information. At this point in time I have not been able to find any Civil Registration providing any source.

As indicated, gg-granduncle Pierre Alphonse was “born the day before yesterday...” Calculating this from the date of the Registration, 23 January 1822, his birth date could be Monday, 21 January 1822.

And here is a bit of an interesting find. It is the three points in a triangle following the signature of ggg-grandfather Jean-François July. Per P.L. “Note the 3 points under the signature of Jean-François July means that he was a mason, which was very usual at this time for craftmen.” I followed up on this information and discovered in Dr. Albert G. MacKey’s publication of 1913 “A New and Revised Edition An Encyclopedia of Freemasonary and Its Kindred Sciences” on Page 2 the meaning of the three points.

The question now, what is the meaning of the curved symbol before ggg-grandfather Jean-François' signature? Any ideas?

My Tangent - Windows Versus Ubuntu

Evening,

And I’m using my notebook today. It seems that I can only regulate myself to the corner of the room designated for those individuals that are forever dangerous and should not be allowed to frig, sorry about the slang but I can’t think of a better way of putting it, with PCs. And yes I crashed my system last night and then again this morning. This just seems to be a way of life. And do you know what type of withdrawal I go through... when I cannot search for the origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith’s genealogy and ancestry?

All I know is that since my last crash, a month ago, I was attempting to reinstall all the software that I use and those hardware that are, what I consider important for my obsession. And this time I was installing a local external hard drive with some associated backup software, and the damn thing, the PC that is, got itself so confused that Windows 7 decided not to function.

Praise be that I have been in the process of learning Ubuntu. Ubuntu is an alternate operating system... alternate to Windows. But I had been taking it slow, reinstalling programs from the last crash, and the new external hard-drive and software that are supposed to take a quick back-up of my key programs so I can avoid having to take all the time it takes to reload after a crash. Say that in one breath.

Well having Ubuntu, and almost going into a panic mode as I had to get all the paperwork for our quilt submissions completed. These submissions are due tomorrow for the November 6 Show at the USF Botanical Gardens. We are now submitting 12 quilts into the show. And I was considering sepuku with a wakizashi.

Ubuntu to the rescue... But you have to understand that that which I wanted to do, create documents, fill-in forms, and work with images with Ubuntu was all new territory to me. It was akin to learning a foreign dialect something like Swahili, not that I am even conversant in Swahili.

Well I got the submission forms completed. I printed them and the images, times four for the red tape and paper work. And then I was to post our next new quilt, OP Angel to Quilts SB and our Quilts SB Etsy Shop. Hallelujah for Ubuntu.

And then I prepared myself to post my latest transcription and translation of the 1822 birth registration of gg-granduncle Pierre Alphonse July... He’s the July that immigrated way back when to Maine, in the United States. And then my PC, with Ubuntu crashed. I swear these machines were not made for me. What can I say?

I’ll try to get the work done on the Acte de Naissance for gg-granduncle Pierre Alphonse July on my notebook... And then its to the shop on Monday for my desktop.

Part 375j – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Marie Jully – Birth Transcription Update

Morning,

It is always a surprise and a pleasant one at that, when I receive an email out-of-the blue with an offering of assistance to my genealogy research and effort. This is what makes this pursuit of the re-construction of the family tree so, so unique. The search for one’s ancestry and genealogy is just something that possibly ties individuals and complete strangers together.

Following up on my recent work in Part 373j regarding the Birth Registration of ggg-grandaunt Marie Jully, I received a tremendous work of transcription and translation of the same document from P.L.

Thank you P.L., and the 11th of Fructidor still stands. As I stated previously, the conversion could possibly mean that ggg-grandaunt Marie was born at six am on the 28th of August 1799. Oh and by the way, the post-Revolutionary name for that date was Pastèque or Watermelon. (Yup, watermelon! There was a name for each of every of the 366 days of the French Revolutionary Calendar.)

Faisant suite à mes travaux récents en 373j Partie, en ce qui concerne l'enregistrement de naissance de mon arrière-arrière-arrière-grand'tante Marie Jully, j'ai reçu un énorme travail, de la transcription et la traduction du même document à partir de PL.

Part 373j – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Marie Jully – Birth Registration

Good Afternoon,

And this morning after my skate – 10.5 miles, 16.9 kms., and the planting of my fall garden – tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, beans, peas, squash, and parsley, I decide to attack the 1799 Acte de Naissance, the Birth Registration of ggg-grandaunt Marie Jully. Please note that I have used the surname Jully and not July. Jully is the spelling of the surname as it appears on this Birth Registration. Her parents are recorded as Pierre Jully and Jeanne Colomière.

From the Civil Registration and the FHL Collection - Registres de l'état civil, Bordeaux (Gironde). Officier de l'état civil (Main Author), 1793-1888; Naissances (C) 1798 jan-sept (actes no. 310-fin) -- Naissances (N) 1798 sept- 1799 sept -- Naissances (S) 1798 sept- 1799 sept (actes no. 1-1592), I downloaded the image of the Acte de Naissance from the microfilm FHL [1647079]

Inserted above is the Index which includes the name of ggg-grandaunt Marie Jully.

Apart from the transcription and translation, this time there is also the date conversion of the date from the French Republican date. From what I can make out, the registration date appears to read “Le Onze Fructidor de L’an Sept de La Republique Franc”. This translates, I think, to 28 August 1799. (I used the French Republican Calendar on Wikepedia as my reference.)

I cannot make out the actual date of birth, and I may be a bit confused as to grasping the actual day.. I can make out the first part of the Acte de Naissance, Birth Registration to read “Est née Le huit du courant a Six heures du matin…” Translating, that is “Born the eighth of the current day at six o’clock in the morning…” Any other eyes would certainly be implored.

En dehors de la transcription et de traduction, cette fois, il ya aussi la conversion de la date à partir de la date républicain français. D'après ce que je peux faire sortir, la date d'enregistrement apparaît comme suit: «Le Onze Fructidor de l'An septembre de La Republique Franc». Cela se traduit, je crois, pour le 28 août 1799. (J'ai utilisé le calendrier républicain français sur Wikepedia que ma référence.)

Je ne peux pas faire à la date effective de la naissance, j'ai peut-être un peu confus quant à saisir le jour même. Je peux faire la première partie de l'acte de naissance à lire, «Est née Le Huit du courant a Six heures du matin ... » Des yeux d'autres, serait certainement imploré.
