In my genealogy work and research I need to continually update the Family Line Descendant Charts that I create. Here is the newly updated Sheridan Descendant Chart.

A number of people have asked me as to what software I use to create my Descendant Charts. I use GenoPro. I like the relative freedom that GenoPro allows me to create and re-create, as well as move data around.

Part 729s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1878 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle Dennis Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

Good Day,

Next on the venue of my Sheridan Family Line and Genealogy search and research is the 1878 Baptism Registration of great-granduncle Dionysius.

From the Baptism Registers of St. Peter’s Church in Wilmington, Delaware, great-granduncle Dennis Sheridan was baptized 20 January 1878 by Father John A. Lyons. I chanced upon a portrait of the Reverend Monseigneur John A. Lyons as presented at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s site. Great-Granduncle Dennis’ birthdate is recorded as 16 January 1878.

And two extremely key facts have been presented in this Baptism Registration of which has not been found in writing, up to this point. GG-Grandfather Thomas and GG-Grandmother Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan’s place of origin in Ireland are the Counties of Mayo and Galway, respectively. And now on to Ireland and the search continues.

Part 728s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1876 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Ellen Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

Good day,

The research of the genealogy of a family line sometimes leads to more questions, and with the presentation of this next Baptism Registration some do arise. Lesson learned – Check out all churches of the same and of similar denomination that are in close proximity to a family home or family location when looking for vital and parish records.

According to the 1910 US Census gg-grandmother Helen/Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan had six children. To date I have found the Baptism Registrations for the first four: great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty (Part 717s); great-granduncle John J. (Part 724s); great-grandaunt Catherine (Part 725s); and great-grandaunt Margaret (Part 726s).

The first three children; g-grandmother Mary Helen, g-granduncle John J., and g-grandaunt Catherine were all baptized at St. Peter’s Church. The fourth child; g-grandaunt Margaret was baptized at St. Paul’s. Why? All-things-being-equal the walking distance today, according to Google maps, is just about 12 minutes; less than one mile apart.

The next Baptism Registration is that of great-grandaunt Ellen Sheridan dated 25 February 1876. Her birth date is listed at 20 February 1876. She was baptized at St. Peter’s. And again why?

I located it in the Baptism Registers from St. Peter’s Church. Here is the actual page image as downloaded from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

Something definite to note, the spelling of the surname on the Baptism Registration is "Sherdan" as opposed to "Sheridan".

My take home message – In my genealogy search and research, I shall not take anything for granted.

Part 727s - Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy - Which John J. Sheridan is Which?

Good Day,

The Hugh Sheridan, that I have been researching, appears to have been from another Sheridan Family who lived in New Castle Town. All-things-being-equal it appears that he may not be one of your immediate ancestors. But then again he may be, as he was also a Sheridan. My confusion is that great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty did have a younger brother, great-granduncle John J. Sheridan who was born 22 November 1867, (see Part 724s) and this Hugh's elder brother was also named John J. Sheridan.

The other John J. Sheridan was born in the 1860s as well. This one, according to the 1920 US Census had eight children, the eldest being 22 years old in 1920. He is the one who had a younger brother named Hugh. I believe that their father's name was also Hugh. In 1920 this John J. Sheridan family, including his brother Hugh lived at 29 West Fourth Street in New Castle Town in New Castle County. (Accordingly this is now "Old New Castle".)

Great-Granduncle John J. Sheridan, according to the 1910 US Census was single and living with his parents, great-great-grandparents Thomas and Helen/Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan. His age is given as 42 years. They lived at 1000 Pleasant Street in Wilmington City, in New Castle County. This location was with 3 minutes from St. Paul's Catholic Church which is on West Fourth Street in Wilmington.

So you can now understand the confusion... Two John J. Sheridans, both born in New Castle County in Delaware in the 1860s. Both had siblings with similar and near closely related names. Both were from Irish Catholic families. Both lived at or in the vicinity of a street with the name of Fourth, 4th. The key point is that one was married while the other, your great-granduncle John J. was single.

Pleased note that the "greats" and "grands" designations are as the individual relates to Andy.

And now you see how miniscule details can make the difference on identifying who may or may not be an immediate ancestor and relative.

Part 658d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – The Great-Grandaunts Doherty – 1940 US Census – Wilmington, Delaware

Good Day,

Good news. This morning Ancestry.com has indexed the 1940 US Census for the States of Delaware and Nevada. And we need Delaware…

Immediately, and this time with the correct spelling, I discovered the Census Page from Enumeration District 4-21 for the five Doherty great-grandaunts: Greta C., Frances G., Mary T., Katherine, and Elizabeth.
Their house was at 911 West Eighth Street in Wilmington, in New Castle. Five maiden grandaunts all living together; all great-grandfather Gerald Doherty’s elder sisters.

The address of the big house was at 911 West Eight Street… It is no longer there. Today it is a part of the I-95 embankment, overpass, and exit ramp. See the inserted image from Google maps.

Part 657d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Doherty – 1940 US Census – Wilmington, Delaware

The sun is shining through the clouds this morning… and it is a gorgeous day here in Tampa.

As mentioned in my last Posting regarding the 1940 Census and the Brunhammer Family, I would next search for the Doherty Family.

Flipping the images, as provided by Ancestry.com, I started at the 127th Page, where I discovered the Brunhammer Family. All I had to do was flip through four more Pages and there at 2006 Woodlawn Avenue, in New Castle County in Wilmington, Delaware, was the Dougherty Family. Is this the correct Family? Doherty versus Dougherty…

Most definitely the right family… Included in the household are Andy’s grandparents Gerald (Doc) and Myrtle (née Holmes) Dougherty albeit Doherty; his uncles Gerald (Doc), Phillip (Phil), William (Bill), and John (Holmesy); his aunts Katherine (Kitty), Helen, and Nancy; and his mother Myrtle F(rances).

The Enumeration District is indicated as 4-45 and the Census was taken on April 5, 1940.

Here is the image of the page of the 1940 US Census highlighting the Dougherty Family. Obviously the enumerator may not have asked how to spell the surname Doherty. He or she, the enumerator, must have made an assumption and wrote the surname as Dougherty.

As a note and from About.com Genealogy – The name Docherty is from the word “dochartach” meaning “obstructive.” Docherty is the most common Scottish form of this surname, while Doherty and Dougherty are usually of Irish derivation.

The above inserted image from the National Archives and Records Administration shows tabulators recording information from over 120,000 enumerators who scoured the United States to collect data for the 1940 Census.

And now to continue my genealogy trek and search.

Part 656b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Brunhammer – 1940 US Census – Wilmington, Delaware

And of course I had to search and find… and search again. The 1940 US Census is now available online; in image format. It hasn’t been indexed as yet, but it is available if you are wanting to turn the pages. And I do, that is, did.

The 1940 Census is available online from the National Archives at their site – 1940 Census Official 1940 Census Website.

Search capabilities are available via Location and via Enumeration Districts. By entering a Street name into the Location search field, along with the State, County, and City, the search engine provided me with six Census Schedules for specific Enumeration Districts.

When I linked over to the first Enumeration District Census Schedule for Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, the site only allowed me to view the first page of 36 pages. I am not sure if it was my system or the National Archives database which was halting my preceding any further than Page 1.

I then opened up my Ancestry.com subscription and was able to open up their new link to the 1940 US Census. I was able to find the exact Enumeration Districts as relayed by the National Archives website.

And lo and behold after paging, that is flipping, through 127 pages, that is images, and scanning down each list of enumerated names, I discovered the Brunhammer Family at 1834 Union Street in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware. The Enumeration District is provided as 4-45 and the record of the Brunhammer Family occurred on April 5, 1940.

The Brunhammer Family included Andy’s grandparents Harry and Ann (née McAteer) Brunhammer; his two aunts, Madeline and Clair; and his father Eugene. Bingo!!!
