Part 939ss - 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott Marries Eliza Miller

09 May 2019

Good day,

At long last!

I have found a good source for the 1846 Marriage of GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott to Eliza Miller.

Transcription -

"JULY 8 - BURY AND NORWICH POST, AND EAST ANGLIAN - 1846
MARRIED
Same day, at Lyston, Essex, by the Rev. J. I. Worship,
Alexander Reid Scott, Esq., of Kingston, Jamaica, to
Eliza, only daughter of the late Alexander Miller, Esq,
of the same place."

The "same day" refers to the previous Marriage Registration and the time frame of "On Tuesday last".  Calculating that from the date of the Bury and Norwich Post, and East Anglian, 8 July 1846, I would say that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott's and Eliza Miller`s marriage happened on 7 July 1846.

There is an issue that their 1846 Marriage was registered in Sudbury, Suffolk, England in the 2nd Quarter. According to the Post it took place, from my interpretation on July 7, which is in the 3rd Quarter. Note also, the difference between the two Counties of Essex and Suffolk. Liston, Essex is less than 3 miles north of Sudbury.

Also, something should be noted, that today Lyston is spelled as Liston in Essex.

We have found the Marriages Registered in April, May, June 1846.

Here are the copies of the 1846 Marriage Registrations for GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott and Eliza Miller.

Here is an quick update, which or course can change as the research continues, of GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott`s and Eliza Miller`s Ancestry Chart.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 938sr - Figure Out How You Relate To Someone Based on cMs (CentiMorgans)

24 April 2019

Good Day,

I have been introduced to a very good tool that assists with trying to figure out the probabilities based on the cM - Centimorgan.

From the International Society of Genetic Genealogy Wiki

"In genetic genealogy, a centiMorgan (cM) or map unit (m.u.) is a unit of recombinant frequency which is used to measure genetic distance. It is often used to imply distance along a chromosome, and takes into account how often recombination occurs in a region...

The genetic genealogy testing companies 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA and MyHeritage DNA use centiMorgans to denote the size of matching DNA segments in autosomal DNA tests. Segments which share a large number of centiMorgans in common are more likely to be of significance and to indicate a common ancestor within a genealogical timeframe."

The tool is the DNA Painter, The specific tool I am referring to is the Shared cM Project 3.0 tool v4. Click on the highlighted links provided.

Here are the results of me to a 1st cousin who's a match at 23andMe. 23andME indicates a cM result of 816.

Here are the relationship probabilities.

As I know that the individual is my 1st Cousin, it is a forgone conclusion that he, KLS, and I are rated at a 95.25% probability.

And here is the produced chart of possible matches and their associated cM ranges.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 937ss – GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott – A Confusion?

20 April 2019

Good Day,

Note to self – The discovery of more documents may and can change the actual connections of your ancestors to me. Based on the discoveries, everything is subject to change.

From the records I have discovered in my search regarding GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott, there is a wee bit, actually a lot of confusion. The confusion is whether there are 3 or 4 wives and partners. At this point of my search I have followed the trail of the documents and I believe that GGG-Grandfather Alexander had 6 children, that I have been able to account for, belong to his 3 wives and partners.

His wives and partners were –

1. Anne Wall – I have discovered that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott and Anne Wall were not married at the time of their sons’ baptism. They did have 2 sons:

a. William Scott – b. 1824
b. Allan Scott – b. 1828

2. Eliza Hall – I am still looking for the possibility of a Marriage Registration. They had 1 son.

a. Alexander Scott – b. 1830

3. Eliza MillerGGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid married Eliza Miller in 1846. They had 3 children:

a. Isabel Anne Georgina Scott – b. 1847
b. Charles James Cater Scott – b. 1849
c. Fanny Auguste Mary Scott – b. 1853

GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott passed away some time between 1853 and 1861. His death could have happened somewhere between Kingston, Jamaica and Liverpool, England.

After his death, Eliza (née Miller) Scott married George Louthean. GGG-Grandfather Alexander’s widow Eliza became George Louthean’s 3rd wife.

I have presented an almost concise date line of events. Outlining the events in this manner has help me to further hone in on what and how they occurred in GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott’s life.

1801 October 1 – George Louthean of Liverpool marries Sarah Alcock of Liverpool at the Parish of Liverpool. (Document on file)

Part 935sm – 1855 Marriage – GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott

17 April 2019

Good Day,

The day is the 12th of May 1855. It is Saturday, and it is a nice day for a wedding.

This is the date that Great-Great Grandparents Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott were married.

Here is the 1855 Marriage Registration.

Anglican Church. Parish of St. George (Grenada) (Main Author)
FHL #
1523656

My transcription –

were married in St. George’s Church by License with Consent of

in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred and fifty-five
By me Jas Alex Anton, Rector

This Marriage was solemnized between us Alexander Scott, Sarah Ann Rosetta McKowen

In the presence of Henry Ganaway, Henry Sharpe

No 163

As the 1855 Marriage Registration states that Great-Great Grandfather Alexander Scott was a “Clerk in Holy Orders” and “of St, David’s Parish", is it possible that this may have been one of his early appointments in Grenada once he finished at St. Augustine’s College in Canterbury, England?

Also could GG-Grandfather Alexander have been “stationed” at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Genville in the Parish of St. David’s?

And here is a coincidence. Both witnesses' first names were "Henry". GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah's first son "Henry Alexander Cumberland Scott" was born just under a year later, on 16 April 1856 at Paradise Pen, Kingston, Jamaica.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 934ss – 1841 UK Census – Could This Possibly Be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott?

16 April 2019

Good Day,

As I made mention in Part 933ss, I have come across a possibility of an 1841 UK Census that could, all-things-being-equal, include GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at the age of 11-years. The Alexander Scott that I may found appears to be attending a school in on Lee Road, Park Terrace in the Parish of Charlton, Kent, England.

Here is the 1841 UK Census for Charlton -

My transcription –

Page – 25

Place – Lee Road, Park Terrace

Houses Inhabited – 1

Names of each Person who abode therein the preceding night – Alexander Scott

Age and Sex – Male – 11

Profession, Trade, Employment or of Independent Means – Proprietary School Where Born, Whether Born same County – N(o)

Is this GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at 11 years old? Did GG-Grandfather Alexander attend the Proprietary School?

I started to check Genuki and it appears that not many schools in the area existed prior to the 1841 UK Census. The Blackheath Proprietary School may be the one listed in the 1841 Census. The summary from the Enumerator's Schedule breaks it down as follows - County of Kent, Hundred of Blackheath..., Parish of Charlton.

The Enumerator's description -

"The Houses from the Boundary Stone by Brunswick Place along the East side of Lee Road Cresswell Park, Park Place and as far as the Boundary Stone in Lee Road. All the houses in the Park called Blackheath Park within the Parish of Charlton and that part of Redbrook Upper Farm in the parish of Charlton without the Borough of Greenwich."

A couple of things that make a logical argument that this could be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott.

(1) Same name

(2) Approximate same age, 11 years old. GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott was born 17 Aug 1830. The 1841 Census was taken by the Enumerator on 11 Jun 1841. Ages recorded in the 1841 Census were as close to actual ages for those 15 and under. Anyone over 15 was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.

(3) In the columns "Where Born", the 1st of 2 columns asks, "Whether Born in same County, the response for Alexander Scott is "N". The 2nd column may be the one that indicates that this is not GG-Grandfather Alexander as the question is "Whether Born in Scotland, Ireland, or Foreign Parts". This column is left blank.

There are several files on record regarding the Blackheath Proprietary School at the National Archives. It would be a good luck to check the files, especially the 1841 listings of the student attendees and to discover where they, especially this Alexander Scott originate.

Today, the Blackheath Proprietary School no longer stands, excepting at the possible site there are buildings. Above the portal of one of the buildings is the following sign.

Part 933ss – 1851 UK Census – GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott Attends College

14 April 2019

Good Day,

At times, certain “plain” documents can reveal much more than you may be looking to find. In this case, it is the 1851 UK Census.

And a “Hello” to a new family connection TK. We’ve been able to find and trace to our MCRA (Most Common Recent Ancestor) based on our Family Ancestry work and our Autosomal DNA testing.

Our common ancestors are GG-Grandparents Rev. Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott. My Great-Grandmother was Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith. TK is descended from Great-Grandmother Ella’s brother, my Great-Granduncle Hubert Somerville Scott.

Here is a copy of the page of the 1851 UK Census that identifies, who more than likely is GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott when a young man of 20 years old.

My transcription -

1851 UK Census

City or Borough of – Canterbury

Name of House… - St. Augustine’s College
Name and Surname… - Alexander Scott
Condition – U(nmarried)
Age of Male – 20
Rank… - Missionary Student
Where Born – Jamaica, Kingston

This is interesting as GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott, who was born in Jamaica, does, in his early 20s head back to the Caribbean to follow his “Missionary” zeal.

I have come across a possibility of an 1841 UK Census that could be GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott at the age of 11-years. The Alexander Scott that I have found appears to be attending a school in Charlton, England.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 932ss – 1833 Baptism GG-Grandfather Reverend Alexander S. M. Scott

11 April 2019

Good Day,

Today I am working with the Baptism Registration of my Great-Great Grandfather Rev. Alexander S. M. Scott. The date of the Baptism registration is 30 July 1833. It is the “Record of Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Saint Andrew in the County of Surry in the year 1833”. This is the same Parish in Jamaica in which I was born and baptized, 118 years later.

Here is a copy of the page from the digitized copy of the Parish register transcripts, 1664-1880, Church of England, Diocese of Jamaica. Registrar; Jamaica. Registrar General’s Department, (Author). The FHL #4005286; Image 188 of 219 is from the Family History Library collection.

Here is the entry of GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott’s 1833 Baptism entry. GG-Grandfather Alexander's entry is the last one, #34.

My transcription –

371 Record of Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Saint Andrew in the County of Surry in the year 1833

No – 34

When Baptised – July 30th

Child’s Name & When Born – Alezr Scott 17th August 1830

Parent’s Name –

Christian – Alex Reid & Eliza

Surname – Scott & Hall

Abode – ?? Pen

Profession –

By whom the ceremony was performed – Revd T(homas) B Turner

To date I have discovered the following sons and daughter of GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott and GG-Grandmother Sarah Ann Rosetta McKowen.

1. Henry Alexander Cumberland Scott – born 16 Apr 1856; died 10 Jun 1857

2. Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith – born 6 Sep 1857, Nassau, Bahamas; died circa 1945, Grenada

3. Leonard Campbell McKowen Scott – born circa 1858

4. Hubert Somerville Scott – born 20 Sep 1858, Nassau, Bahamas

5. Percy St. John Scott – born circa 1861

Regarding my search and research, I would think that GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah were married in about 1855 and somewhere between Grenada and Jamaica.

If you have any thoughts, ideas, or questions, please feel to ask.

Beginning with my Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith, I am now searching for all possible sources of information associated with my Scott Family Line.

Next on the docket GG-Grandparents Alexander and Sarah Ann Rosetta (née McKowen) Scott's Marriage Registration and GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott's Burial notice.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 860s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated James Smith Descendant Chart

01 September 2013

Good Day,

Okay, I have re-created and redrafted with some minor changes my current James Smith Descendant Chart. I have re-positioned three of the great, great grands: great-great grandaunt Mary Ann; great-great grandaunt Sophia; and great-great granduncle George.

This positions the children of ggg-grandparents James and Mary Ann (née Dore) Smith in the following order on the Descendant Chart:

  GG-Granduncle George Smith;

  GG-Grandaunt Sophia (née Smith) Ventour;

  GG-Grandaunt Mary Ann (née Smith);

  GG-Grandaunt Eley Smith;

  GG-Grandfather James Smith;

  GG-Granduncle Henry Smith; and

  GG-Granduncle Thomas Smith.

My logic is currently based on my research and documentation concerning births, marriage, and burials, as well as the Last Will and Testament of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. (See Part 347s.)

I will shortly be updating the pull-down links at the top of the page of A Genealogy Hunt.

If you have any comment, thought, idea, or question, please feel free to contact me at A Genealogy Hunt.

Part 649s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated Scott Descendant Chart

27 February 2012

Good Day,

And it is great that at times there are family members and connections that are willing to share their research and the details that they have chanced upon. This time the new information and data center on our Scott Family line and genealogy.

Thanks to Tonya, our Scott connection in British Columbia, and her research and continued search, I can add some new detailed information about our ggg-grandfather Alexander Reid Scott to our Family Tree.

Here is my updated Scott Descendant Chart

Instead of going into all the data in this Posting I have provided an updated Scott Descendant Chart; details to follow. It is amazing how this Scott family also includes England, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Grenada as home locations.

More to come… I have to make supper.

My Tangent - Happy 4th Day of Christmas - Two Genealogy Resolutions Completed

28 December 2010

Good Afternoon and Happy 4th Day of Christmas.

Four Calling Birds, Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree. That’s $1,011.96 for Day 4 of Christmas gifts. Certainly an expenditure to help the economic turn-around. The true lover must have certainly appreciated his or her true love... but nothing to my pocket.

I have been working very slowly on my genealogy research over these past couple of days. But I did accomplish two of my Genealogy Resolutions: Number 2 – To populate a database of microfilms and microfiche that I have reviewed; and Number 3 – To find an iPad Application which will provide an extract of the data in Number 2. And hurrah, two completed before January 1, 2011. (You can check out my other resolutions at My Tangent – And Today I Ponder – Genealogy Resolutions.)

The database is built in MS Access. To date I have entered 251 microfilms and microfiche rentals that I have used in the progress of research. This is only a portion of my records. The surnames of research included in the database are: Abraham, Brunhammer, Crossley, Gavalas, Goodey, July, McCullogh, McKowen, Olton, Parker, Prestwidge, Redhead, Robertson, Roy, Scott, and Smith. This list does not include the variations and multiple spellings that I have encountered of the surnames.

The countries included in the database: Grenada, Scotland, France, Barbados, Jamaica, England, French Guiana, Sénégal, Bahamas, Greece, Wales, St. Vincent, Canada, and the United States. Provinces in Canada include: Nova Scotia, and Quebec. The States of the USA are: Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. Please note that these are locations specific to my genealogy work with the FHL microfilms and microfiche only.

Number 3 – Done. I am now able to remotely connect my iPad directly to my PC and desktop. Using the application iTeleport I can actually pull up MS Access, and all other software as are resident on my PC, and I am able to see, review, and use any software, database, or document. This is a great tool that further allows me the freedom of not having to lug around reams of paper and binders or ensure that I have a compatible application working on my iPad.

I am having a hell of a time trying to commit myself to the latest and greatest document in my sequence from the Grenada Registers of Records. This individual Record has six pages and I have completed transcribing two. The writing is extremely small and it does take time. I have to just hunker down and forge forward with my commitment to myself and just get to work transcribing.

Work continues on my 12 other Genealogy Resolutions. Onward and upward.

Enjoy,
Jim

Part 123s – Smith Robertson Genealogy - Smith Descendant Chart Update 7

20 November 2009

Afternoon,

Thought I would quickly put up the latest update of the Smith Descendant Chart. Per my tracking this should be Update 7.

Just a word of note… Any new additions to the Descendant Chart from previous updates should have the labels of the name and/or dates, and at times, the square or circle symbol, in red. The notations in red should be cross-referenced to postings in my Blog where information and/or data concerning an individual may be located. You can enter the “P121s” notation as “Part 121s” in the Search box in the upper-corner of the left-hand green column under the heading “Search This Blog”. And no, Toni I have not as yet figured out how to allow the reader to click on the red notation to link it directly from the image to the Blog posting… Maybe in time…

Enjoy,

Part 121s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1857 Birth Great-Grandmother Ella Margaret Louise Scott

19 November 2009

Morning,

And today I thought I would quickly jump to another country… the Bahamas, for the registration of my great-grandmother Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith.

Did you know that “the water used at the christening of the Princess Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, was brought from the river Jordan"?

Source: The Nassau Guardian and Bahamas Islands’ Advocate And Intelligencer,
published the 9th of September 1857

The format of civil registration in the Bahamas for my great-grandmother Ella Margaret Louise’s birth seemed to mirror that of Grenada, which of course makes sense, as they were both a part of the British Empire at the time. I am just at odds trying to understand why the birth registrations were predominantly just a registration of a “human being” and not necessarily an individual. I’ve highlighted the line where I believe her birth, sans nom, is registered.

The above page of the Civil Registration was located on the microfilm FHL [222934] Births 1854-1857, Birth, marriage and death registers, 1850-1959, Registrar General, Bahamas.

My transcription –
BAHAMAS
BIRTHS IN THE Eastern District of the Island of New Providence DURING THE THREE MONTHS ENDING THE 30th DAY OF September 1857.
No. – 19
WHEN BORN. – 6th September
NAME, IF ANY. –
SEX. – F
NAME AND SURNAME OF FATHER. – Alexander Scott
NAME AND MAIDEN SURNAME OF MOTHER. – Sarah A.R. Scott formerly McKowen
RANK OR PROFESSION OF FATHER. – Episcopal Clergyman
WHEN REGISTERED. – 10th September
SIGNATURE OF REGISTRAR. – C.E. Spenser
BAPTISMAL NAME, ID ADDED AFTER REGISTRATION OF BIRTH. –

And then I went looking through WorldVitalRecords.com. I was able to find a database of scanned images of pages from the Nassau Guardian.

Using the birth and registration dates I thought that I would just check out some scanned pages near that time range. I lucked out. It was a “Eureka Moment!” I discovered a two line Birth Announcement that ties. It has to be the Birth Announcement for my great-grandmother Ella Margaret Louise Scott. And from the information that I have discovered to date, great-grandmother Ella Margaret Louise only had four brothers. I have not been able to find any data referencing any other female sibling. This may be her.

Sources: The Nassau Guardian, Nassau, Bahamas
and WorldVitalRecords.com

My transcription –
BIRTH – At Briney?, on the 6th instant, the wife of Revd. Alexander Scott, of a daughter.

Thanks Ray and Dave for your attempts at transcribing the place of birth “At Briney?”. I still not sure exactly what it is, but the Civil Registration above is titled “THE Eastern District of the Island of New Providence”. This would lead me to believe that “Bimini” is not the place, and which is not an actual physical location on New Providence. I just wonder if any of the other or out-islands were included in a “registration district” versus an actual location. If any one has any thoughts, insights, please feel free to comment or email me.

Enjoy,

Jim
