Part 947ss – 1751 Marriage Registration – GGGGG-Grandparents William and Margaret (née Straiton) Scott

27 May 2019

Good Day,

Do you know the difference between an “irregular” marriage versus a “regular” marriage in Scotland? I didn’t…but I do now.

In Scotland, prior to 1 July 1940 an “irregular” marriage, (from Scotlands People), was a recognized marriage “in which a man and a woman made a declaration in front of two witnesses, hence the other name “marriage by declaration”" A “regular” marriage was one where a couple “were married by a minister. The “regular” marriage involved banns being read on three consecutive Sundays at the parish church.

All-things-being equal, there may never be a registered copy of an irregular marriage in the parish registers.

And yes, I have located the 1751 Marriage Registration for GGGGG-Grandparents William and Margaret (née Straiton) Scott.

And why do you ask am I interested in “regular” and “irregular” marriages? Well, I am currently researching my Scott family line in Scotland. Obviously, the type of marriage may result in the lack of documented paper registrations.

Also, on the facing page of the Parish Register in which I found GGGGG-Grandparents William and Margaret’s 1751 Marriage Registration, includes on the facing page the marriage registration of another William Scott to one Margaret Kilgower. Their Marriage Registration refers to both an irregular marriage on 2 July 1750 and a regular marriage in the church on 20 June 1751.

Does anyone know, in Scotland at certain times, could "Margaret" be replaced by "Marion"? I've read on one famous case, in history.

Part 943rs - The Search For GGGG-Grandmother Ann (née Reid) Scott

18 May 2019

Good Day,

I am now at a point in my research of my Scott Family line where I need to figure out who and how are GGGG-Grandfather's parents, my 5-times Great-Grandparents. The possibilities are William Scott and Margaret Sraiton, and, George Reid and Sarah Laurie.

Here are a couple of facts and thoughts that I have collected that, hopefully, should point to some answers.

1. GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott were married 9 April 1784 in Leith, Scotland. See Part 942sr - 1784 Marriage Registration - GGGG-Grandfather James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

2. GGGG-Grandmother Ann Reid's father is confirmed as "Mr. George Reid Farmer in Ratho" on her 1784 Marriage Registration.

2. GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann Scott had 11 children. I am currently in the process of searching for all baptism registrations.

3. The 1st 4 of the listed 11 children of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann are named after their Grandparents, my GGGGG-Grandparents William Scott and Margaret Sraiton, and, George Reid and Sarah Laurie. The 1st 4 names are: William, Sarah, Margaret, and George.

4. From findmypast "Search Scottish Records".

"The Scots have for many centuries followed a relatively simple set of rules when assigning given names to their successive children. While these traditional naming patters were not followed by all families, they were widespread enough that a basic understanding of them can come in handy when hunting for Scottish ancestors.

Being familiar with these patterns will allow you to make genealogical inferences, identify potential new avenues of research and reveal all sorts of clues about the lives of your ancestors.

By the latter part of the nineteenth century, these patterns began to break down and fade out of use so be cautious when using them to identify more recent ancestors.

The traditional patterns used when naming boys were as follows:

  • The first son would be named after the father's father (variation is after the mother's father)
  • The second after the mother's father (variation is the father's father)
  • The third son would be named after the father
  • The fourth son would be named after the father's oldest brother (variation is after the father's paternal grandfather)
  • The fifth son would be named after the mother's oldest brother (variation is after the mother's paternal grandfather)

and for girls:

  • First daughter named after the mother's mother (variation is after the father's mother
  • Second daughter named after the father's mother
  • Third daughter named after the mother
  • Fourth daughter named after the mother's oldest sister (variation is after the mother's maternal grandmother)
  • Fifth daughter named after the father's oldest sister (variation is after the father's maternal grandmother)"

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 942sr - 1784 Marriage Registration - GGGG-Grandfather James and Ann (née Reid) Scott

14 May 2019

Good Day,

Following the discovery of the 1802 Baptism Registration, (see Part 941ss), and as the Registration identified GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott's parents as James Scott and Ann Reid, my next step is to seek out a possible Marriage Registration. All-things-being-equal James Scott and Ann Reid would have been my GGGG-Great-Grandparents.

I have discovered that GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott may have been the youngest of  the 11 children of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

And next, the 1784 Marriage Registration of GGGG-Grandparents James and Ann (née Reid) Scott.

And as far as coincidences go, I noted that GGGG-Grandfather James Scott is listed as a "Wright in Leith".  "The noun "wright" is an Old English word, and it always refers to a person who builds, creates, or repairs something (as in playwright or shipwright).  A Wright: a skilled craftsman.

In my research in Part 512s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – GGG-Grandfather James Smith’s Noted Occupations, I observed that GGG-Grandfather James Smith also at points of time in his life is recorded as having been a Wright.

Part 940sh - GGG-Grandmother Eliza Hall

11 May 2019

Good day,

I’ve begun a journey in the search of information regarding my GGG-Grandmother Eliza Hall. She and GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott were the parents of my GG-Grandfather, the Reverend Alexander Scott.

I have found a Baptism Registration for one Eliza Hall whose parents were Ann Bishe and Harry (aka Henry) J. Hall. Eliza Hall’s baptism occurred in Kingston, Jamaica on 17 March 1804. Included in the registration is her birth date of 30 June 1802.

1804 March 27 Baptism Registration
Eliza Hall, Kingston, Jamaica
FHL 1291763, Image 74 of 228

As GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott’s birth date is recorded as 16 March 1802 on his Baptism Registration dated 12 April 1802, it is safe to say that these two individuals were pretty close in age.

GG-Grandfather, the Reverend Alexander Scott’s Baptism Registration dated 30 July 1833 indicates his birth date as 17 August 1830 in the Parish of St. Andrew, County of Surrey, in Jamaica. His parents are entered as “Alex Reid Scott & Eliza Hall”. In most cases, if the parents are married, the entry could have read as “Alex Reid Scott & Eliza his wife”. This is not a fast rule, but it is something to think about.

In 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott married Eliza Miller. See Part 939ss - 1846 GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott Marries Eliza Miller.

Here's some food for thought, and for your ideas.

1. Eliza Hall, according to the required Slave Ownership Accounting instituted between 1812 and 1834, owned slaves.

2. The 1829 Accounting form, Eliza Hall's signature is witnessed by H. I. Hall.

3. The 1832 Accounting form, Eliza Hall's signature is witnessed by Alex R. Scott.

4. 1804 Baptism Registration for Eliza, her parents Henry/Harry i/J Hall and Anne Bishe. Her birth 1802. See 1st document above.

5. 1833 Baptism Registration for GG-Grandfather Alexander Scott, parents Alexander Reid Scott and Eliza Hall. See Part 932ss – 1833 Baptism GG-Grandfather Reverend Alexander S. M. Scott.

What do you think? Who's connected to who, and how?

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

Part 649s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated Scott Descendant Chart

27 February 2012

Good Day,

And it is great that at times there are family members and connections that are willing to share their research and the details that they have chanced upon. This time the new information and data center on our Scott Family line and genealogy.

Thanks to Tonya, our Scott connection in British Columbia, and her research and continued search, I can add some new detailed information about our ggg-grandfather Alexander Reid Scott to our Family Tree.

Here is my updated Scott Descendant Chart

Instead of going into all the data in this Posting I have provided an updated Scott Descendant Chart; details to follow. It is amazing how this Scott family also includes England, Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Grenada as home locations.

More to come… I have to make supper.

Part 535s - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Indenture Research - 1801 James and Robert Smith - Saint Patrick

24 June 2011

Good Morning,

The Transcription Project continues. This current Document is the first Indenture of Grenada Registers of Records from Item 3 of the microfilm [1563378].

There are two Smiths included in the Indenture but I would chance an opinion that neither is, or at least I should say that there is no apparent filial connection indicated to ggg-grandfather James. The two Smiths are: Robert Smith, an Attorney to Marthé Cornette Victoire de St. Cyr Scott; and James Smith of Bassinghall Street, London.

I have discovered that neither of these two Smiths are/were listed in the Index of the Volume of the Registers. Neither of the two of them are either of the two principal parties executing the transaction as prescribed by the Indenture. The only way that I discovered the two Smiths was by reading and/or scanning the Indenture looking for the written name “Smith”.

A critical issue that is key when reviewing and comparing the Indexes to the actual Indentures or collection of documents is that the Index may only provide a single name. There actually may be more than two parties involved in the transaction. In this case this Indenture includes:

For the One Part –
  • William Lusington of the City of London, Merchant
  • Sir Charles Kent of Chandor Street, Cavendish Square, Middlesex County, Baronet
  • Dame Mary, his Wife
  • Ann Verelst of Aston, York County, Widow, ecetera and ecetera… The inset portrait is of Ann (née Wordsworth) Verelst.
  • Ann Wordsworth of Wadworth, Widow, ecetera
  • James Law of the City of London, Merchant
  • Alexander Scott, Son, Heir at Law, of the Island of Grenada
  • Marthé Cornette Victoire De St. Cyr Scott of Wolfenbuttel in the Dutchy in Lower Saxon, Widow
and for the Second or Other Part –
  • Townley Ward of Henrietta Street in the Parish of Saint Paul Covent Garden, Middlesex County
And there are more names included in the text of these three pages; a wealth of finds. Bottom line, you cannot depend upon Indexes provided. You still have go through the documents and the pages, line by line, page by page… and who know what you may find.

Here are the images of Pages 1, 2 and 3.

Part 533s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1801 Benjamin D’harriette Smith – Charibee Islands & Irish Sterling

22 June 2011

Morning,

Summer solstice has passed and now the days begin to get shorter. And we’re in those penultimate days of the just-waiting-for the thunder and lightning season to begin its fury in Central Florida. The days are hot… but at least I have the pool just outside my living room door and I get soaked hourly to keep a cool and calm brain and body.

So I continue on in the search for my ggg-grandfather James Smith; the search and research for his origins and genealogy. This morning’s Indenture does not have any immediate hints or clues that there is any possible association between Benjamin D’Harriette Smith and ggg-grandfather James. The dates included in the Indenture could approximate the time frame near and about ggg-grandfather James’ life and there may have been some association between him and Benjamin D’Harriette Smith. I only conclude because of the indication that the property that is discussed on Page 488 in this contract is bounded and bordered in the Town of Saint George by what is called “the Carpenter’s yard”.

This Indenture begins on Page 484 and continues through to Page 490 of the Grenada Registers of Records found in Item 2 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

Here are the images of the Indenture.

Part 529s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1801 Benjamin d'Harriette Smith

17 June 2011

Good Morning,

This morning is a foray into the Grenada Registers of records 1799-1811 (v. M4-W4) and Item 2 of the FHL microfilm [1563378]. This new Indenture was entered to the Registers 5 March 1801 and written 31 December 1800.

The Smith who is of concern in this Document is Benjamin d’Harriette Smith. Three earlier posts and transcription works introduced Benjamin d’Harriette (or D’Harriett) Smith. Is he connected to ggg-grandfather James Smith? Not sure… but in my search and research for the origins of ggg-grandfather James I certainly will be keeping my eyes open.

A certain portion of a sentence in this Indenture, on Page 480, caught my eye.

“…On the North East by the Carpenter’s yard formerly the property of Samuel Hall deceased; on the North West by other lands in the po∫se∫sion of the said James Park and Benjamin d’Harriette Smith…

The Indenture is a contract regarding property in the Town of Saint George. Obviously the reference to the occupation “Carpenter” and the surname “Smith” in the same sentence are just two of those triggers or clues that could be suggestive that there could be some sort of connection to ggg-grandfather James. In this case, I don’t know… but maybe?

As soon as I come across information regarding the genealogy and ancestry of Benjamin d’Harriette Smith I will be creating and drafting a Descendant Chart.

Here are the images, as downloaded from the microfilm of the copy of the Grenada Registers of Records; Pages 479, 480, and 481.
