Part 163c – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Birth Search, circa 1841 – GG-Grandfather William Crossley

05 January 2010

Morning,

Insert - Parish Church, Todmorden From Weaver To Web website; © Castle Series. E. & B. Ltd.

As with all searches into the lives of each ancestor, there are three vital records that should be gathered to assist us in an elementary understanding of the re-creation of their existences; Birth, Marriage, and Death.

In Part 157c I was able to use the England Censuses from 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871 to trace some of gg-grandfather William Crossley’s life-line. The 1841 Census indicates that he was 5-months old when the Census was taken as of the night of 6 June 1841. This would infer that he was born in about January of 1841. This is not necessarily gospel but my Crossley families had been living in this area of the Parish of Rochdale for some time.

Inserted is the 1841 Census page as found through The National Archives and Ancestry.co.uk. Included in the enumeration are ggg-grandparents Abraham and Hannah (née Newall); gg-grandaunts Mary, Hannah, and Sally; gg-granduncles Thomas, Peter, and Abraham; and gg-grandfather William, the youngest.

The front page of the series of enumerations in which this page numbered 10 was included was as follows:

And my attempted transcription of the front page –

From the website Todmorden and Walsden baptisms at St. Mary’s Todmorden dated 4 May 1842 for five of the seven Crossley children listed in the 1841 Census. This includes gg-grandfather William; gg-granduncle Thomas and Peter; and gg-grandaunts Anna and Sarah. GG-grandaunt Mary the eldest daughter is listed as being baptised on 30 January 1842. GG-granduncle Abraham, (the junior), is missing.

A brief history of St. Mary’s at Todmorden is provided at the Todmorden and Walsden website.

I was able to map the area of District 33 to some extent, as outlined, using Google maps, and I was able to find a number of William Crossleys listed in the FreeBMD Indexes as provided through the Civil Registration Index of General Register Office in London. This task will be a bit more time-consuming as both gg-grandfather’s first name and surname are not necessarily uncommon.

Stay tuned and enjoy,

Jim

Part 141c – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1865 Baptism - Great-Grandmother Mary Alice (née Crossley) Goodey

08 December 2009

Evening,

It is amazing at times what one can find on the Internet. From the website Todmorden and Walsden, there is a brief discussion of gg-grandparents Abraham and Hannah (née Newall) Crossley. There is considerable information regarding the Crossley surname.

According to the Todmorden and Walsden website the Crossley family “by 1851 had moved to number 34 (Square Road). Abraham died at number 34 in 1864, about 30 years after first arriving on the road. He was still working as a mechanic. The widow Hannah remained in the house with her unmarried daughters Alice and Mary. They had moved away by 1881.

From my records, my gg-grandfather Abraham Crossley died 21 March 1864.

Great-grandmother Mary Alice Crossley was born 23 December 1864, and as noted in Part 140c the informant was Hannah Crossley, possibly my ggg-grandmother Hannah (née Newall) Crossley.

I’m curious. The write up stated that “The widow Hannah remained in the house with her unmarried daughters Alice and Mary.” Could great-grandmother’s name, Mary Alice have been created from a combination of the names of her aunts, my gg-grandaunts Alice and Mary? According to my current information, gg-grandaunts Mary and Alice were ggg-grandmother Hannah’s eldest and youngest daughters, respectively. (You can see their positions in the family on the Crossley Descendant Chart, I introduced in Part 132c.)

And my intent was to only present the page of the Register which includes the Baptismal Entry. I discovered the page on the microfilm FHL [1542167], Item 1, Parish registers for Walsden, 1845-1933, Chapelry of Walsden (Lancashire), Church of England.

My transcription follows –
Page 178

Part 140c – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1864 Birth - Great-Grandmother Mary Alice (née Crossley) Goodey

Afternoon,

Following Part 132c, I’ve decided to begin presenting those documents I may have on file of my Crossley Line.

Today I’m beginning the ancestry of my maternal grandmother Madge (née Goodey) Robertson with her mother, my great-grandmother Mary Alice (née Crossley) Goodey.

The inserted picture of great-grandmother Mary Alice to the left may have been posed for around 1915 and 1917.

Great-grandmother Mary Alice Crossley was born the 23rd of December 1864. This Christmas would have been 145 years ago. Her parents were gg-grandparents William and Elizabeth (née Parker) Crossley.

I have included the Certified Copy of An Entry Of Birth number 425 which I obtained from the General Register Office in England.

My transcription –

Part 132c - Smith Robertson Genealogy - Crossley Descendant Chart

29 November 2009

Early Morning,

Couldn’t sleep tonight so I thought I would work on the first draft of the Crossley Descendant Chart. This is one of my ancestral lines in my genealogy that I have been able to uncover a great many generations. My earliest Crossley ancestor is my 8-times great-grandfather Anthony Crossley.

For some of us in our part of the family tree we could be his 10-times great-grandchild. From the records and history that I have been able to gather he was born in around the north-western part of England, in about Lancashire. I’ll provide some more documentation and possible evidence in future posts. He is alleged to have been born around 1655… and that’s about 354 years ago. Wow!

.

His wife was 8-times great-grandmother Martha (née Fielding) and they were purported to have been married at St. Chads, the Rochdale Parish Church, in the County of Lancaster about February 1679.

And here is the new Crossley Descendant Chart. This Chart is larger than normal, and may take more than one page to print.

Enjoy,

Jim
