Part 730s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Updated Sheridan Descendant Chart

09 July 2012

Good Day,

In my genealogy work and research I need to continually update the Family Line Descendant Charts that I create. Here is the newly updated Sheridan Descendant Chart.

A number of people have asked me as to what software I use to create my Descendant Charts. I use GenoPro. I like the relative freedom that GenoPro allows me to create and re-create, as well as move data around.

If you have any questions, comments, ideas, family history, and thoughts, please feel free to contact me.

Enjoy,

Part 729s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1878 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle Dennis Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

Good Day,

Next on the venue of my Sheridan Family Line and Genealogy search and research is the 1878 Baptism Registration of great-granduncle Dionysius.
From the Baptism Registers of St. Peter’s Church in Wilmington, Delaware, great-granduncle Dennis Sheridan was baptized 20 January 1878 by Father John A. Lyons. I chanced upon a portrait of the Reverend Monseigneur John A. Lyons as presented at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s site. Great-Granduncle Dennis’ birthdate is recorded as 16 January 1878.

Here is the actual page image as downloaded from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

And now on to Ireland and the search continues.

Part 728s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1876 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Ellen Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

08 July 2012

Good day,

The research of the genealogy of a family line sometimes leads to more questions, and with the presentation of this next Baptism Registration some do arise. Lesson learned – Check out all churches of the same and of similar denomination that are in close proximity to a family home or family location when looking for vital and parish records.

According to the 1910 US Census gg-grandmother Helen/Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan had six children. To date I have found the Baptism Registrations for the first four: great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty (Part 717s); great-granduncle John J. (Part 724s); great-grandaunt Catherine (Part 725s); and great-grandaunt Margaret (Part 726s).

The first three children; g-grandmother Mary Helen, g-granduncle John J., and g-grandaunt Catherine were all baptized at St. Peter’s Church. The fourth child; g-grandaunt Margaret was baptized at St. Paul’s. Why? All-things-being-equal the walking distance today, according to Google maps, is just about 12 minutes; less than one mile apart.

The next Baptism Registration is that of great-grandaunt Ellen Sheridan dated 25 February 1876. Her birth date is listed at 20 February 1876. She was baptized at St. Peter’s. And again why?

I located it in the Baptism Registers from St. Peter’s Church. Here is the actual page image as downloaded from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

And my transcription of the Latin –

Something definite to note, the spelling of the surname on the Baptism Registration is "Sherdan" as opposed to "Sheridan".

My take home message – In my genealogy search and research, I shall not take anything for granted.

Part 727s - Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy - Which John J. Sheridan is Which?

Good Day,

The Hugh Sheridan, that I have been researching, appears to have been from another Sheridan Family who lived in New Castle Town. All-things-being-equal it appears that he may not be one of your immediate ancestors. But then again he may be, as he was also a Sheridan. My confusion is that great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty did have a younger brother, great-granduncle John J. Sheridan who was born 22 November 1867, (see Part 724s) and this Hugh's elder brother was also named John J. Sheridan.

The other John J. Sheridan was born in the 1860s as well. This one, according to the 1920 US Census had eight children, the eldest being 22 years old in 1920. He is the one who had a younger brother named Hugh. I believe that their father's name was also Hugh. In 1920 this John J. Sheridan family, including his brother Hugh lived at 29 West Fourth Street in New Castle Town in New Castle County. (Accordingly this is now "Old New Castle".)

Great-Granduncle John J. Sheridan, according to the 1910 US Census was single and living with his parents, great-great-grandparents Thomas and Helen/Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan. His age is given as 42 years. They lived at 1000 Pleasant Street in Wilmington City, in New Castle County. This location was with 3 minutes from St. Paul's Catholic Church which is on West Fourth Street in Wilmington.

So you can now understand the confusion... Two John J. Sheridans, both born in New Castle County in Delaware in the 1860s. Both had siblings with similar and near closely related names. Both were from Irish Catholic families. Both lived at or in the vicinity of a street with the name of Fourth, 4th. The key point is that one was married while the other, your great-granduncle John J. was single.

Pleased note that the "greats" and "grands" designations are as the individual relates to Andy.

And now you see how miniscule details can make the difference on identifying who may or may not be an immediate ancestor and relative.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 726s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1871 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Margaret Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

06 July 2012

Good Day,

The research of the genealogy of a family line sometimes leads more questions, and with the presentation of this next Baptism Registration such a question arises. The Baptism Registration is that of great-grandaunt Margaret Sheridan dated 19 October 1871. Her birth date is listed at 13 October 1871.

The next Baptism Registration is located from the St. Paul’s Church Register of Baptism. I have been able to download the two pages from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084].

Here are the images of the two pages. Great-Grandaunt Margaret’s Baptism Registration is the 4th one of gg-grandparents Thomas and Ellen (née Haley/Healy) Sheridan children that I have been able to find.

Part 725s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1869 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Catherine Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

04 July 2012

Good day and Happy 4th of July,

Genealogy search and research of the Sheridan Family Line of Wilmington, Delaware continues.

Next on the find is the 1869 Baptism Registration of great-grandaunt Catherine Sheridan, 13 May 1869. The Registration indicates that her parents were gg-grandparents Thomas and Catherine (née Healy) Sheridan and that her birthdate was 8 May. Great-Grandaunt Catherine appears to have been named for her paternal grandmother ggg-grandmother Catherine Sheridan.

The inserted image is the page from the St. Peter’s Church Records as downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787747].

The Latin –

Maii

13 Bapt Catherinam, filiam Thomas Sheridan et
Catherina Healy, natum 8 Maii Sponsoribus Patricum
Nash et Maria Murphy

My translation –

Note – No year is written on the page, but this Baptism Registration is from the 1869 section of the Register.

May

13 Baptized Catherine, daughter of Thomas Sheridan and
Catherine Healy, born 8 May. Sponsors Patrick
Nash and Mary Murphy.

I wonder if there was a “Do You Think You Can Dance” show in 1869? Either that, or that judge surely aged well…

There are a couple of possible and logical, even though not definite, assumptions that can be made from the naming of the first three Sheridan children: great-grandaunt Mary Helen, great-granduncle John Joseph; and great-grandaunt Catherine. I am making this GUESS purely on the possible application of the general Irish naming convention.

Great-Grandaunt Catherine Sheridan may have been named for her grandmother, her father, gg-grandfather Thomas Sheridan’s mother, Catherine. We have the documentary proof that ggg-grandmother Catherine (née unknown) Sheridan was living in the Sheridan household per the 1870 US Census in Wilmington, Delaware. (See Part 120s.) The Irish naming convention applies – 2nd daughter was usually named after the father’s mother.

As gg-grandparents Thomas and Ellen M. Sheridan’s first child and daughter was baptized Mary Helen Sheridan, and based on the Irish naming convention – The 1st daughter was usually named after the mother’s mother, we could venture to say that gg-grandmother Ellen M. (née Healy/Haley) Sheridan’s mother’s first name may have been “Mary”.

The first son, great-granduncle John Joseph Sheridan, according to the Irish naming convention – The 1st son was usually named after the father’s father, could have been named for gg-grandfather Thomas Sheridan’s father. I have not found any document stating ggg-grandfather Sheridan’s name, I could go out on a limb and conjecture that ggg-grandfather Sheridan’s first name may have been “John”. Time and continued research will tell.

More to come, stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 724s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1867 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle John Sheridan – Wilmington, Delaware

02 July 2012

Good Day,

I’ve done my puttering outside in the garden; the only way to attack the cleanup without succumbing to the heat is to segment the yard and property. My only issue is whether to subdivide our yard and garden into 12 equal parts or 365 unequal segments.

My genealogy work today is the presentation of great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty’s siblings. All-things-being-equal her parents, gg-grandparents Thomas and Ellen M. (née Haley) Sheridan may have had seven children. I have been able to identify six while number seven is at this point in time a mystery.

Based on the records that I have found to date great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty was the eldest. The next in line was great-granduncle John Joseph Sheridan. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware 22 November 1867 and baptized at St. Peter’s Church on the 24th.

The above-inserted is the image of the page from the St. Peter's Church records downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

The Latin transcription –

And of course, this opens a new question – Who was the Sponsor “Mary Sheridan”? How was she related to gg-grandfather Thomas Sheridan? Something to think about...

Part 717s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1866 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandmother Mary Helen Sheridan

18 June 2012

Good Day,

Today my genealogy search takes a veer to the left, or is it the right, in the discovery of the ancestors of the Doherty Family Line. From the Registers of Baptisms of St. Peter’s Church in Wilmington I have located the Baptism Registration of great-grandmother Mary Helen (née Sheridan) Doherty.

The date of great-grandmother Mary Helen’s baptism is 15 August 1866. A daughter of gg-grandparents Thomas and Helen (née Haley) Sheridan, her birth is recorded at the day previous, 14 August.

Here is the image of the page from the Church records as downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm [1787748].

Good Day,

The Genealogy trek continues with the discovery of the vital registrations of grandaunt Helen Doherty (aka Dougherty)’s very short life.

In my project to gather all documentation of all Doherty family and ancestors I have uncovered the pertinent vital records for the life of great-grandaunt Helen Doherty, the only daughter of g-grandparents Gerald and Mary (née Sheridan) Doherty.

The first document and image are the pages, extracted from the 1895 St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms. Grandaunt Helen was born 24 January 1895.

She was baptized by Father M Y Fallon at St. Paul’s Church 3 February 1895. Her sponsors were John and Mary E. Doherty.

Part 712d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1893 Birth and Baptism – Grandfather Gerald Doherty

13 June 2012

Good Day,

The Doherty Genealogy and Family Line research and search carries on. From the 1893 recordings of the St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms I have located the Baptism Registration of Grandfather Gerald Doherty.

Here is the image as downloaded from the St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084]. Due to the size of the page and image, I had to copy the left and right size of the page individually. I then cut and paste the two pieces to create a single image.

Part 705d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Doherty Descendant Chart Updated

05 June 2012

Good Day,

Since I posted Part 665d, my last update to the Doherty Descendant Chart, I have definitely added a number of new bits of information and data. As I continue to mention, and write, my work in genealogy is “Always Under Construction”. Even though everything has happened in the past, I am constantly finding and learning new details about ancestors and family members.

I am a very visual person. I have to see everything in pictures, especially in the form and Descendant and Ancestral charts. Above is my latest update to the Doherty Family Line and the Doherty Descendant Chart.

As always the Doherty Descendant Chart is in reference to the ancestral relationships to Andy. I have highlighted his direct Doherty line by indicating his immediate blood line with yellow and blue symbols. All new, updated, and changed data is emphasized in red. The codes that are interspersed throughout the Chart are the Part numbers as referenced to my Postings and discussion on A Genealogy Hunt.

If you have any questions, comments, thoughts, and ideas, please feel to get in touch with me.

Part 684d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1869 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Margaret Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

12 May 2012

Good Day,

The search and research continues into the genealogy and gathering of documentation of the Doherty Family Line. The Baptism Registrations of the first four of eleven children of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty have now been found from the Registers of St. Peter’s Church, now Cathedral in Wilmington, Delaware. And now I have to find the subsequent seven.

This next one is of great-grandaunt Margaret Doherty. Her baptism is dated 26 December 1869 and the Registration refers to her birth date as the 22nd of the same month.

Once again the Priest/Scribe has entered and spelled the family surname Doherty as “Dougherty”. The Priest/Scribe is the same as the one who registered great-grandaunt Margaret’s elder sister great-grandaunt Mary Ellen, a year earlier.

Here is the image of the Page from the St. Peter’s Parish Register and downloaded from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

And the Baptism Registration is in Latin.

Decembris

1869

M.A. McGrane

My attempt to translate –

December

1869

26 Baptised Margaret, daughter of Philip Dougherty
and Margaret Doughtery, born 22. Sponsors
John Kelly and Bridget Hayes

M.A. McGrane

And now begins the search for the appropriate documentation for the seven younger siblings. All-things-being-equal the Doherty Family may have progressed to a different Church.

Based on the possibility that great-grandaunt Greta Doherty was born about 1870, I have been able to find three possible Roman Catholic Churches in Wilmington. Documentation exists for three other Churches apart from St. Peter’s. These three Churches are: Saint Ann – 1870; St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception – 1857; and St. Paul – 1869. All-things-being-equal St. Paul’s may be the closest church to the Doherty home… and as transportation to Church circa 1870 was more or less by foot or some sort of equine mode.

The top inserted image is of 1010 and 1012 King Street in Wilmington. Borrowed from the University of Delaware Library, Special Collections Department. It is from the Wilmington Dental Manufacturing Company. Catalogue of Artificial Teeth and Condensed Price-list of Dental Materials, Instruments, Furniture, &c. Well the search continues. If you have any question, comment, thought, or ideas please feel free to contact me.

Part 683d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1868 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Mary Ellen Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

11 May 2012

Good Day,

The Genealogy of the Doherty Family Line continues with my pursuit of the gathering of all documentation that I can get my hands, or PC, on.

GGG-Grandparents Philip and Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty’s third child and daughter was gg-grandaunt Mary Ellen Doherty. She was born 14 January 1868 and baptized at St. Peter’s Church, in Wilmington, Delaware on the 19 January 1868. This time the Doherty Family surname is spelled Dougherty in the Church Register.

She was baptized on the same day with two other children. One of the children is Margaret Ann Dougherty, daughter of Patrick and Ann (née Coughlin) Dougherty. Apart from having the same entered last name, Dougherty, as gg-grandaunt Mary Ellen Dougherty, and being baptized on the same day, this Margaret Ann Dougherty was born on the same day, 14 January 1868.

The inserted image is the Page of the St. Peter’s Church Register including the birth and baptism information of gg-grandaunt Mary Ellen Doherty. Note that her name in Latin is written “Mariam Ellen”.

Now the questions are:

1. Was the Priest/Scribe, who entered the detailed information into the Church Register, aware of the two spellings of the surnames Doherty and Dougherty?

2. Was a spelling mistake made by the Priest/Scribe regarding the surnames?

3. Was Patrick Dougherty’s last name truly Dougherty, or was it Doherty?

4. Could have Patrick Dougherty been related to either ggg-grandfather Philip Doherty or ggg-grandmother Margaret (née Doherty) Doherty?

My transcription –

Part 679d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1866 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandaunt Helen Doherty, Wilmington, Delaware

09 May 2012

Good Day,

Now isn’t genealogy amusing? Not amusing in a “snide” or “sarcastic” way, but in a sort of “fun” and “challenging” type of way.

My search of the St. Peter’s Church Registers of Wilmington, Delaware now has produced the documentation of the 11th Doherty sibling – great-grandaunt Helen Doherty. This is the mystery Doherty. All-things-being-equal, great-grandaunt Helen appears to have been gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret Doherty’s second child and the first of eight daughters.

Great-Grandaunt Margaret was born, in Wilmington, Delaware, on 25 March 1866. She was baptized at St. Peter’s Church 1 April 1866 when she was just seven days old.

The above inserted image is the actual page of the Church Register. I downloaded it from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787748].

Part 678d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1864 Birth and Baptism – Great-Grandfather Gerald Doherty, Wilmington, Delaware

08 May 2012

Good Day,

Well the search for genealogy records, vital ones of the Doherty Family Line, has kept me reviewing the Parish Registers of St. Peter’s Church in Wilmington, Delaware.

Based on the discovery of the Marriage Registration of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret Doherty dated 4 January 1863, see Part 674d, I decided that there may be a chance that some of gg-grandparents Philip and Margaret’s children may have been baptized at the same Church.

As chance would have it I was able find the Baptism Registrations of the first four of 11 children.

The first and the eldest was great-grandfather Gerald. I can read that he was baptized in December 1864, but the actual date of the baptism is not clear due to a close binding of the Register. According to the Register great-grandfather Gerald was born 28 November 1864.

I have downloaded the image of the page from Item 4 of the microfilm FHL [1787748], from the original 1796 – 1930 Church records at the Diocese of Wilmington in Wilmington and Dover, Delaware.

Here is my attempt at transcribing the Latin entry.

Part 120s – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – Discovery - GGG-Grandmother Catherine Sheridan

17 November 2009

Afternoon,

Following up to my note in Part 116s regarding a search and the new Sheridan Descendant Chart in Part 112s I achieved success. I discovered the Sheridan Family listed on an 1870 and an 1880 US Census. The new updated Sheridan Descendant Chart follows.

The surname of Sheridan is presented in a number of ways listed on the 1870 and 1880 Censuses. The variations of spellings are: from 1870 – Sheradin; and from 1880 - Shearden; Sherdian; Sheardian; and Sheardia. Only two enumerators and five different spellings...

Check out the ages of gg-grandfather Thomas. He is listed at 32 years on the 1870 Census, and 10 years later on the 1880 Census he has only gained three years and is listed at 35 years. GG-grandmother Ellen on the other hand is 25 years old in 1870 but has aged 13 years to 38 years old on 1880 Census. There must be something in the water in Wilmington, especially between 1870 and 1880. Great-grandmother Mary (née Sheridan) Doherty and great-granduncle John do age the mandatory 10 years from Census to Census.

One-year old great-grandaunt Catherine, who was born circa July 1869, may not have lived past childhood as she is not enumerated in the 1880 Census. All-things-being-equal she may have been named for her grandmother, ggg-grandmother Catherine, who in 1870 is living with the family and may be a widow at 55 years old.

Two more; great-grandaunt Ellen, who may have been known as Nellie, and great-granduncle Dennis had been added to the family by the 1880 Census. Great-grandaunt Ellen was born about 1876 and great-granduncle was born about late 1877.

On the 1st of June in 1880, the Sheridan family lived at 8 Madison Street in Wilmington, in the County of New Castle, Delaware. GG-Grandfather Thomas (listed Shearden), who was a Boiler Maker, had been unemployed for the past 12 months. In the 115th Column the heading asks the following: Is the person (on the day of the enumerator’s visit) sick, or temporarily disabled, so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business or duties? If so, what is the sickness or disability? And I’m not sure I can make out or understand that which the enumerator wrote – “Diaspectie”.

Here are the highlighted pages of the 1870 and the 1880 Censuses.

Are the neighbors, at 10 Madison Street, Mary Kane, and John and Bridget Sheardian, in the 1880 Census, relatives?

And going to post I just discovered more family information on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Censuses. Stay-tuned.

Part 116s – Smith Genealogy – 1848 Baptism - Great-Granduncle Victor Smith

15 November 2009

Afternoon,

Blog administration completed… Sunday mornings. And the email comments are coming in. Thanks Helen, for the Sheridan family tip. We’ll see what turns up later today when I start my Internet ancestry search. Hopefully today I can work on reducing at least one of the genealogical mountains of paper.

This afternoon the first ancestor and family tree posting is the Baptism Entry for great-granduncle Victor Smith. I located the following page on the FHL [1526356] microfilm. The page is included in Item 8 of the microfilm.

For your edification, Items on the FHL microfilms can be likened to chapters in a book, or to divisions. A microfilm can have one or many Items. Usually it is a sequence in the filming of a document, or a series of documents, books, related or unrelated, and that are included in a FHL microfilm. As you can see at the image of the summary of FHL [1523656] at the section of page titled “Film Notes” there is only in total, one microfilm number – FHL INTL Film [1523656]. But there are many Item numbers, from 1 through and including 20. This is a facilitation that assists with a search of images on the film. In this case the filmed image of the page for the Baptism Entry for great-granduncle Victor Smith should be found on the microfilm at Item 8, and it does.

The microfilm FHL [1523656], Item 8 is Baptisms 1844-1892 of the microfilm that includes the Parish registers of 1784 through 1971 of the Anglican Church, of the Parish of St. George in Grenada. With corresponding technology I have made a jpg copy of the image, and with the use of certain software I have attempted to trim the external parts of the film background of the page, sharpen the legibility, and reduce the bleed-through from the back-page, and tweak the image so that I can get a reasonable facsimile. With other software I have highlighted the actual entry for quick reference.
