Part 260s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1825 James Smith – Again The Carpenter

05 April 2010

Evening,
And now I follow with a Record that obviously is the successor to the previous one transcribed in Part 259s.

This Record was made 30 July 1825 following the previous made 28 July 1825. I am not cognizant as to the structure or workings of the 1825 English legal profession so I do not know how 5 shillings and a peppercorn, in two days became £1121-1-0.

I cannot be sure that the James Smith in this Record is ggg-grandfather James, but he is certainly the same one as in the Record in Part 259s. I have circumspectly cross-referenced some of the names mentioned in the Document to the same listed in the Slave Schedules of former British Colonial Dependencies, 1812-1834. These are the same Schedules of which I believe accorded to ggg-grandfather James.

The images of the pages 398 through and including 400 are downloaded from Item 1 of the microfilm FHL [1563380] as filmed of the Grenada Registers of Records 1825-1834 (v. H5-O5).

Part 259s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1825 James Smith, the Carpenter

Afternoon,

You know you are obsessed when the garden needs to be worked on and taxes have to be worked out and supper with shrimp had to be prepared and you know you’ll get around to them sometime today, but you’ve got to work on a couple of transcriptions cause there is a great possibility that they may be referencing ggg-grandfather James Smith and you need to know if there is a clue of some sorts. And now I can breathe!

There is no clue in the following Record, pages 396 and 397, as to the origins of ggg-grandfather James’ genealogy or ancestry. But all-things-being-equal as this 1825 James Smith is listed in the Document as a Carpenter there is a great possibility that this is ggg-grandfather.

Here are the images of the pages of the Record as found in the microfilm FHL [1563380], Item 1 from the Grenada Register of Records 1825-1834, (v. H5-O5).

  1. Only 10 shillings?
  2. And another peppercorn?
  3. Is this ggg-grandfather James Smith, the Carpenter?

Part 258s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1826 James Smith – Possibly GGG-Grandfather James

02 April 2010

Afternoon,

Today’s a good day to start off with a new microfilm of another Register of the Grenada Registers of Records. This morning I go back 10 years from my last Posting, Part 256s, and I do believe this Record, dated 14 August 1826 relates to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The copy of the Register is found in the Grenada Registers of Records, 1825-1834 (v. H5-O5) and FHL [1563380]

The Record is the recording of a Bill of Sale of a parcel of land including buildings, etc., in the Town of Saint George for the exorbitant price of five shillings and one peppercorn. There does not appear to be any hint or clue as to the genealogy or ancestry of ggg-grandfather James, but my research into the yearly rent of “one peppercorn” certainly is an eye-opener into the legal wranglings of contract law.

From Item 1 of the microfilm of the Register, here are pages 393 and 394.

The inserted map is an overhead picture of the Carenage at St. George’s. As the photo, from Bing is dated 2010 I cannot be certain, of course of the exact location of the plot or parcel of land referred to in this 1825 Record. Comparing this photo to a map provided at the website of Travellers Guide Grenada you can see the approximate location of Young Street.

Favor to ask. Please notify me if I may make an error in spelling. Please note that I try to transcribe what I see, and sometimes I may not get it exactly as the document, record, or website may have committed. It is the English teacher in me.

More to come.

Part 257s - Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study Matrix Update

01 April 2010

Afternoon,

For the purposes of easily finding Transcriptions/Records associated with specific Smiths I have updated the Smith Indenture Study Matrix. I have now completed Items 1 through 8 of those Smith-related Records that I could find from the microfilm FHL [1563329]. This microfilm is a copy of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2).

Please note that I have not segregated the Posting numbers by unique individuals.

I have only listed the singular Smith names. In other words, there may be more than one individual with the same name, for example, Andrew Smith. I have only recorded those names as single entries if and only if there is a unique prefix or suffix added to the name. For example, James Smith and James Smith, Junior each are represented on single lines of the Matrix. The listed Smith may or may not be the same individual but the transcribed Record(s) may not have any clues or hints as to that fact.

In order to see a specific Part, please enter the Part number, e.g. Part 244s, into the “Search This Blog” box. You can also see a copy of this Matrix at my Analysis Page.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Part 256s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1835 Richard Oliver Smith

Afternoon,

At times I am just flabbergasted at the history and the people that are a part of this Transcription Project that I have committed myself. And I know that I could spend hours just following that tangent that may or may not have anything to do with the genealogy or ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The following Record is a short one and appears to be a Letter of Substitution assigning to Richard Oliver Smith. And of course I know that at this point in time I have not found any hint or clue of a connection to ggg-grandfather James. I will keep looking.

The person assigning the Letter of Substitution is one William James D’Urban. Just do an Internet search of his name and check out what comes up. One of the ones that I found may have been the reason for this Letter of Substitution. I discovered his name via Google Book Search in a book titled “A List Of The Officers Of The Army And Royal Marines On Full, Retired, And Half-Pay With An Index. 1839”, published by W. Clowes and Sons et al, London.

Here is the single page 558 from the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837, (v. R2-Z2.) downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Part 255s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1834 James Smith

Morning,
The James Smith included in today’s Record transcription may or may not be ggg-grandfather James. I cannot tell from any of the content of this Document.

It definitely is a continuation of the business matters of James Smith and John Sly and the Thomases et al. (See the previous Posting at Part 243s. Therefore I cannot incite any discussion as to the genealogy or ancestry of ggg-grandfather James Smith from the Record’s subject matter.

The pages 468 through and including 471 were discovered in the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2.) and extracted from Item 8 of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Here are the images of the pages.

My Tangent – All Out Canine Defensive - Milestone

Morning,

It’s all-out war. Me against them. Me and the canines. Not my teeth, I can’t afford another dog-induced crown. It’s me and the LabRat Unit against the orange and tabby she-devils. I need to do my genealogy and my quilting without the distraction of a cat conflict.

Green Jeans planted the spring garden – three types of eggplants, four types of tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, zucchini and summer squash. Thai, Spicy Global, and Regular Basils. Asparagus beans, aka Asian long beans. And my previous efforts are sprouting.

And this morning, they had attacked. Dirt had been sprayed over the boardwalk. The Basils took a hit. And when we went for our morning walk two of the feline recruits were just lying in the sun on the other side of the street. I was so tempted to unhitch the whining hounds.

The gas of the Critter Rid does not seem to work for the purported 30 days. It only works for one day. And my mask down, I now wait for the next shock and awe.

Oh and by the way, thanks to all for visiting both Blogs, Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt and Quilts SB. March saw a new milestone of the total number of visitors since I began blogging. A total of 627 visitors world-wide; 457 (a record for Genealogy, a Treasure Hunt) and 170 (three weeks of Quilts SB). And this isn’t any April Fool’s joke.

Enjoy the morning,

Jim.
