Part 627s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Robert Smith (Entered 1801) – Grand Roi and Mon Plaisir Estates, Saint John – Part 2 of 2

19 January 2012

Good Day,

I could become a Vegan, but under one condition. I would have to do without Tofurkey Sausages. Not matter what I did with them there sausages last night they still tasted like dead, soggy, and re-cycled cardboard. I fried them with onions and then simmered them in apple cider vinegar and chicken broth. I coupled the meal with a Delicata Squash, Apple, Potato, and Yogurt mash and a Green Pea salad with celery and onions. Give me NO Tofurkey. Mind and palate lesson learned.

The Transcription Project continues. The search for the origins of ggg-grandfather James Smith appears to be never-ending. Thanks to all of you who have been following A Genealogy Hunt and have been sending me ideas and suggestions. They are most welcome.

The next set of Transcriptions is the second Part, of two of the 1799 Document from the Grenada Registers of Records. The sole Smith included is Robert Smith. There are no explicit clues as to any connection to ggg-grandfather James. The above inserted image is something representational I found of The Consolidated Bank Limited. In the body of this Document there is reference to “…twenty thousand Pounds three per Cent Consolidated Bank Annuities Upon the Trusts following…”

Here are the images of Pages 110 through and including 113 as downloaded Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

Part 626s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Robert Smith (Entered 1801) – Grand Roi and Mon Plaisir Estates, Saint John – Part 1 of 2

17 January 2012

Good Day,

In my continued sear and research for the origins and genealogy of my ggg-grandfather James Smith at times I chance upon a name, aka surname, that sort of catches my eye. And just before I go any further, this Document appears to be a followup to the previous one that only includes the name Robert Smith.

The name that has caught my eye is that of "Marryat". I wonder if it my have been an original format of the current name "Marriot"? Just thinking our loud. Anyway from A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Colonial Gentry by Sir Bernard Burke, C.B. LL.D… Vol. II, edited by Ashworth P. Burke. London, 1895, I discovered information that more than likely is of the same Joseph and Samuel Marryat, which are names included in this Document.

Here are the first five Pages of the 1799 Document which appears to be a schedule of payment options and choices. The name Robert Smith appears as Legal Counsel. Once again there does not appear to be any immediate connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Here are the images of Pages 105 through and including 109 as downloaded from the Grenada Registers of Records and Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

Part 625s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Robert Smith – Grand Roi and Mon Plaisir Estates, Saint John – Part 2 of 2

16 January 2012

Good Day,

The cold continues here in Tampa. Supposed to be warming up this week… and only 4 ½ months until the beginning of Hurricane Season.

And staying with my Transcription Project in the search for the genealogy, ancestry, and origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith, today’s Posting of A Genealogy Hunt presents the next four Pages of the 1799 Document from the Grenada Registers of Records. (See Part 624s for the first five Pages.)

The above inserted image is a cut-out from the 1801 Gavin Smith Map of the Island of Grenada. The portion that I have included approximates the location of the two Estates; Grand Roi and Mon Plaisir. The Red oval is placed in the contiguous location.

Here are the images of Pages 102 through and including 105 as downloaded from the Grenada Registers of Records and Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

Part 624s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1799 Robert Smith – Grand Roi and Mon Plaisir Estates, Saint John – Part 1 of 2

15 January 2012

Good Day,

When is a Risotto not a Risotto? According to what I have read, there is no true Risotto but made with three types of rice: Arborio, Carnaroli, and Nano.

Okay, okay, something to do with the ‘pearl’ in the center of the rice. Well last night I tried something different, once again, for supper – Chicken and Orzo Pasta… and made it like a Risotto. ‘Twas ever so easy to prepare. Chicken breast cut in some fork-sized bites, water and chicken broth, and Orzo pasta all thrown into the pot. Brought to a boil and then lowered heat and stirred every so often for about 12 minutes. In the meantime I fried up some sliced mushrooms and minced garlic in olive oil and butter. Once the chicken orzo concoction was sort of done, I threw in the mushrooms and garlic, some various herbs, pepper and salt, and about a ¼ cup chopped Nasturtium flowers, stems, leaves, and all. Then I stirred in a bit more than a ¼ cup of Parmesan Cheese. Served it with shaved Parmesan Cheese on warmed plates. Too, too good.

And then I got back to my Transcription Project in my search and research for the genealogy and origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. I have decided that one of my genealogy priorities this 2012, sort of a resolution, (but don’t count on it), is to transcribe as much of those Smith-related Documents from the period of 1764 through 1850 that are available from the Grenada Registers of Records. All-things-being-equal I would hope to find more hints, clues, and leads to the origins and genealogy of ggg-grandfather James. For your information, that would be about 23 of the 33 16mm microfilms that are housed at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

In keeping with my goal, here is the next 1799 Document of the Grenada Registers of Records from Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563378]. This one includes the attorney Robert Smith of Basinghall Street, London. His name, and work appears to be a possible constant over a number of Documents. There does not appear to be any reference or link to ggg-grandfather James Smith included in the nine pages of this Indenture.

For your information I try to include as many as possible surnames as labels to my Postings. All-things-being-equal the following are names, as transcribed, included in this 1799 Indenture:

  • James Campbell
  • Alexander Cockburn
  • Thomas Harrison
  • Me∫srs French and Johnston
  • Sir Richard Carr Glyn
  • Monsr LeVevier
  • Marie Madelaine Coulon Mariecheau
  • Monsr Marreaud

  • James Mays
  • Jean Baptiste Ollivier
  • John Orr
  • Henry Poole
  • William Postlethwaite

Part 538s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1796 William Smith – Last Will and Testament – The Logie Connection!

27 June 2011

Good Hot Evening,

In the heat of the day, with the lack of the precious commodity of air-conditioning, I have been able to stumble upon a prize Document. This Indenture is the Last Will and Testament of William Smith.

Is this William Smith a connection to my ggg-grandfather James Smith? That I cannot answer… but there are a number of answers that are revealed from the script of this 1796 Last Will and Testament.

In the body of the Will is the reference “As for all the rest and Residue of my Estate and Effects of whatsoever nature or kind I give and bequeath the same to my dear Brother James Smith living at Logie in Scotland…” James Smith! Brother! Living at Logie in Scotland! This is a connection that I have been searching for, the detail that will connect Smiths of Logie, Scotland to Grenada.

I introduced in Part 178s a James Smith, a Weaver from Logie in Scotland who in 1803 is searching for information regarding his brother William Smith’s estate. Accordingly it is written that the brother William Smith was a Merchant in Grenada.

This looks to be the Last Will and Testament of the “lost” brother, William. As the LWT was written on 1 December 1796 and sworn to on 3 December 1796, it would appear that William Smith passed away sometime between the 1st and the 3rd. The Saint George Parish Death Registration, in Part 440s “1491 Mr. William Smith, Merchant; was buried on the 2nd day of Decbr. 1796” is the next confirmation.

Examining William Smith’s 1796 Last Will and Testament there does not appear to be any mention of any direct family inheritance, that is, the only immediate relative that is mentioned in the text of the Will is his brother James Smith of Logie. There are notices of bequests to others but I cannot conclude that there are any gifts given to any direct relative save that to his brother.

In the 7 June 1803 entry of the Power of Attorney by James Smith, the Weaver of Logie, it is indicated that “Whereas William Smith of the Island of Grenada Merchant died lately without iʃsue and whereas James Smith late of St. Georges in the same Island according to the best of my Information died sometime before the said William Smith…”. (See Part 178s.) This means, of course, that I need to now search and find any documentation that may lead me to William Smith’s nephew James, son of James Smith the Weaver of Logie.

William Smith’s Last Will and Testament was found in the 1796 Grenada Registers of Records, Volume F, pages 329 – 331. The same copy is downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563320]. Here are the images –

And as a part of the Item gifted in the will are "Joes". I had to find out what a "Joe" is/was? It appears that it is a slang term for a Johannes, a Portuguese coin. At about the time some of the currencies used in Grenada and the Windward Islands included a Spanish doubloon which passed for $16 and a half joannes or joes for $8. (From The Shipmaster's Assistant and Commercial Digest by Joseph Blunt, 1851, New York.) That resolves that issue.

And now to search for the son and nephew James Smith. Could this be a connection to ggg-grandfather James?

Enjoy,

Part 533s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1801 Benjamin D’harriette Smith – Charibee Islands & Irish Sterling

22 June 2011

Morning,

Summer solstice has passed and now the days begin to get shorter. And we’re in those penultimate days of the just-waiting-for the thunder and lightning season to begin its fury in Central Florida. The days are hot… but at least I have the pool just outside my living room door and I get soaked hourly to keep a cool and calm brain and body.

So I continue on in the search for my ggg-grandfather James Smith; the search and research for his origins and genealogy. This morning’s Indenture does not have any immediate hints or clues that there is any possible association between Benjamin D’Harriette Smith and ggg-grandfather James. The dates included in the Indenture could approximate the time frame near and about ggg-grandfather James’ life and there may have been some association between him and Benjamin D’Harriette Smith. I only conclude because of the indication that the property that is discussed on Page 488 in this contract is bounded and bordered in the Town of Saint George by what is called “the Carpenter’s yard”.

This Indenture begins on Page 484 and continues through to Page 490 of the Grenada Registers of Records found in Item 2 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

Here are the images of the Indenture.
