Part 782p – Smith Groh Genealogy – When is a 1904 Civil War Pension Index Not? – GGG-Grandfather Leo Pariza – Wisconsin

25 October 2012

Good Day,

At times the search and research into the genealogy of a family line and into the background of an ancestor does become a wee bit confusing.

Most recently I discovered two Index Cards relating to ggg-grandfather Leo Pariza. Both are labeled of the Civil War Pension Index which is a collection of The National Archives in Washington, DC. The two cards are dated 8 March 1904. Except for a few minor differences, it could be stated that both cards were completed on behalf of the same person, Leo Pariza.

But here’s where there I stumbled into a bit of confusion.

The confusion is that these cards are a part of the collection entitled the Civil War Pension Index. The cards are registered in the “Name of Soldier: Parisaya, Leo (alias) Pariza Leo.” This is the first piece of a puzzle. Was ggg-grandfather Leo’s surname Pariza or was it actually Parisaya?

My second misunderstanding is just what gives with the dates? The American Civil War from my knowledge was from 1861 through 1865… and ggg-grandfather Leo Pariza was born either in 1878 or 1879, based on two different sources. Therefore he could never have participated in the Civil War. Another possibility is that this entry may have been referenced to his Father.

After a bit of investigation and research, it appears that entries included in the Civil War Pension Index includes, not only the Civil War but other wars and conflicts. These, for the lack of segregation into a separate Index are included in the Civil War Pension Index. GGG-Grandfather Leo was involved in the Spanish American War. I will be presenting my concluding evidence in my next Posting.

Here are the images two Index Cards from the Civil War Pension Index as downloaded from The National Archives via Ancestry.com.

And here are my two summary Clooz reports: CWPIWI000001 and CWPIWI000002.

My Tangent – Ancestry.com is Acquired By Permira for $1.6B

24 October 2012

Good Day,

And now that I am back, it is time to catch up and continue my search and research into the genealogy of my Family Lines and Ancestry.

But...I wonder how the acquisition of Ancestry.com by the European private equity firm Permira Funds will affect the subscription service I pay for, positively and negatively?

According to Ancestry.com “there will be no anticipated changes in its operating structure with this deal. The company will remain in Provo, Utah, and it will continue to focus on investing in content, technology and expanding product offerings…” The key word, of course, is “anticipated”…

Permira is “a European private equity firm with global reach… specializes in five sectors: Consumer, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrials and TMT (Technology, Media, Telecommunications). There are currently, according to Wikepedia, 25 companies in the Permira funds’protfolio…” This could mean that Ancestry.com could now become only 4% of the focus of Permira’s controlling management team of Kurt Björklund and Tom Lister.

And what does this mean to me, a genealogy researcher, who pays for the Ancestry.com subscription service? Time will only tell.

Check out this article from Bloomberg.com, dated 25 February 2011. The question is how, is Ancestry.com strictly perceived now as a potential investment, or an investment in the lives of our ancestors’’ descendants? Again I repeat, only time will tell.

Enjoy,

Part 695d – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1873 Birth and Baptism – Great-Granduncle John Patrick Doherty – Wilmington, Delaware

26 May 2012

Good Day,

This is my 900th Posting to A Genealogy Hunt. A Genealogy Hunt began as a blog in May 2009. All-things-being equal this may mean that I take about 65/6 days off every year. Maybe, but how do I account for the 240 Postings to Quilts SB during the same time period.

The second St. Paul’s document in my genealogy search that I was able to find is the Baptism Registration of great-granduncle John Patrick. His birth, in Wilmington, is recorded 13 March 1873 and his baptism was celebrated 16 March 1873.

Based on the documents that I have found and we now have on file the following are the Doherty (aka Dougherty) siblings up to 1873:

Baptized at St. Peter’s –

1. Gerald – Born 28 November 1864 (Part 678d)

2. Helen - Born 25 March 1866 (Part 679d)

3. Mary Ellen – Born 14 January 1868 (Part 683d)

4. Margaret – Born 22 December 1869 (Part 684d)

Baptized at St. Paul’s –

5. Philip – Born 3 September 1871 (Part 693d)

Here is the image of the page 36 from the St. Paul’s Register of Baptisms. I have downloaded it from Item 5 of the microfilm FHL [1788084].

And my transcription –

36

1873

Register of Baptisms

Date – March 16
Name of Child – John Patrk
Lawful Child of – Phil. Dougherty & Margt
Born – March 13
Sponsors – Jas Kane & Cath. Kane
Name of Priest – M. Fallon

Note that the priest, once again, did enter the Doherty surname as “Dougherty” in the Register of Baptisms.

Stay tuned for the next update to the Doherty Family Line.

My Tangent - Panic; Electronic Tools

02 March 2012

Good Day,

Today, in this day and age, I realized how electronically vulnerable I really am. And for anyone who does work on genealogy, of which the data files and folders become as precious gold, this can become a serious matter.

In my car, on a quick trip to my PC experts at Citrus Computers here in Tampa, I had to take in my desktop to get it tweaked, fixed and a new “case-applied”. My notebook mouse and cursor functionalities had seized up when I was updating my anti-virus software Kaspersky 2012. Further, the battery was draining on both my iPad and iPhone. Now realize that I backup up my desktop to another hard drive and at a distance via Carbonite. My notebook is a pure backup and my iPad is a “show and tell” tool.

But I was pinning when I realized that I would not have my means, any means of electronic communications and/or work tools. I picked up all my gizmos, and on the trip home I immediately thought “What would I do if I was in a new car accident?” And I subsequently began to think, not of my physical corps, but of my electronic Avatars. How I would survive in my created world without any electronic tool for my means of communications? Heavens forbid I would have to talk orally, and with the vocal chords as found in my upper throat.

Well, everything is back in place, now. Everything is connected and working, backed-up and protected.

Just something to think about… Oh and yeah, thanks to the guys at Citrus Computers.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 634s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1802 Benjamin D’Harriette Smith - St. George’s, Grenada – Last in Item 3

29 January 2012

Good Day,

This is the continuation of my Transcription Project in the search for the genealogy and origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. And this is the last Smith-related Document in Item 3 of the Family History Library microfilm FHL [1563378].

The inserted image is of the file stacks of microfilms at the Family History Library.

This Document is comprised of Pages 474 through and including 477. There have been, from my discovery, 108 Smith-pages in the Grenada Registers of Records. These are manifestly labeled in the Index assuming that a Smith is one of the “To/From” Parties. This does not mean that there could be more mentions and inclusions of the name Smith, it just means that these are the Pages that are listed in the Index.

Here are the four images of Pages 474 through 477 as downloaded from Item 3 of the microfilm FHL [1563378].

And my transcription. This contract is between Benjamin D’Harriette Smith and James Park. Once again, I do no read any clue to a connection to ggg-grandfather James.

My Tangent - Soup Spoon - Kabocha Pumpkin Soup - Genealogy List

17 November 2011

Good Morning from A Wet Tampa,

He stands frozen, staring at the table, all muscles taut. And he is focused on the table, not moving his head in either direction. I approach, he doesn’t move. Nothing breaks his line of vision. But there is something in that brain of his that has him transfixed.

I sure as hell can’t figure it out. I try to follow his line of sight. At his immediate front, a wooden TV table, a spoon on a napkin, set for the new Kabocha Pumpkin soup experiment.

Then I realize that he is staring at the reflection of the whirling overhead fan in bowl of the soup spoon. He is just staring, and staring. He, Radar, starts to growl. His object… the twirly bug in the soup spoon. And all we can do is laugh. Nothing passes this 16-pound guard dog. Nothing whether it is a plane in the sky, a possum rustling in the hedge, or a teeny, tiny bug spinning in the oblivion of the bowl of a soup spoon.

And I am still chuckling.

With the issues of my PC upgrades, the excitement of our MQX Quilting Evolution announcement, I have been somewhat remiss with my work on my genealogy research. But all in all, A Genealogy Hunt, last night was ranked #1 Genealogy Website at TopListed.Net. This morning it ranked at #4.

Today I will be sitting down and try to organize my thought processes of my genealogy research and search. I need to focus in on prioritizing those branches I want to pursue.

Oh and the quick recipe for the Kabocha Pumpkin Soup. About ½ a Kabocha Pumpkin peeled, seeded, and chopped into cubes. Six whole cloves and 2 ½ cups of chicken broth. Bring to boil, lower heat and let simmer for 20 minutes. Remove cloves. Add 1 onion, 1-inch ginger, 6 cloves of garlic all finely chopped. Some salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 more minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of white Miso (paste) blended in ½ cup of chicken broth. Sprinkle with some chopped cilantro. Enjoy… One comment, “Best soup I ever had.”

Stay-tuned… and enjoy your day.

Regards,

Jim

My Tangent - Tigger's Family Tree

27 October 2011

I know, I know... I just had to post this. Thank you Walt Disney and A.A. Milne.

It also makes one think when the ancestry search and research is triggered by "fabricated" and "construed" documentation. Makes me ponder when a Family Tree is created and enhanced with flash and glitter when genealogy becomes a numbers' game!

Enjoy,

My Tangent – Tracing Family History – My Review and Thoughts

19 August 2011

Good Day,

Over a bowl of congee this morning, and thinking about all the outstanding emails that I must respond to, I figured that I had better respond to one specifically, if not in part. I was asked to review the August 2011 Issue of Tracing Family History magazine. The request came as result of a Tracing Family History staff member who just happened to chance upon my Blog, A Genealogy Hunt. Pretty slick! So’s the magazine.

You need to know something from the get-go. I am a subscriber, and have been for some time to Tracing Family History. I really do like Tracing Family History… I am an immigrant and a naturalized US citizen, but I was born a Brit, in a British colony, now independent country. When I did get hooked with this past-time, actual full-time, hobby of genealogy some seven years ago, I learned quickly that the American publications were good but did not fit that which I needed to help me to pursue my ancestral search from some major distance. I needed to learn how to investigate and research by British roots, especially my English and Scottish ones.

My ancestral trek did not start at Ellis Island nor did I have the wherewithal to claim some ancestral passenger on the Mayflower. I’m not saying that I do not have any Plymouth-landing forebears. I just know that entered the United States of America through Houlton, Maine some years ago, and set up house and shop in Tampa, Florida. I have the copies of my subscription of Tracing Family History mailed to my home in Tampa, Florida.

Each issue is jammed packed with articles, stories, regular contributions, and a wealth of knowledge that at most times may touch a specific area that may be relevant to any of my searches, especially in and of the United Kingdom. The August issue certainly provides a compendium of articles and stories. Below the portrait of Daniel Radcliffe on the front cover, certainly apropos for the release of the latest and last Harry Potter film, and byline title “Harry Potter’s Diamond Roots: get inspired!” my eyes catch a new “How To” headline “How To – Scottish Records Civil Registration and Censuses.

The catch of the white on red “How To…” on the front cover is a wee bit misleading when I open to the Contents page. The two “How To’s…” on the Contents page are “Housing The Working Classes” and “You Are Legend: Ancestors Who Fought In The Spanish Civil War”. The Scottish “Civil Registration And Censuses” article, the first part of a series by Chris Paton, is actually listed under the “Beginner’s Guide” for page 14. The Daniel Ratcliffe article is listed as a “Cover Story” and is about “the South African diamond mining industry in the roots of Harry Potter star…

I immediately go to page 14; Civil Registration and Censuses by Chris Paton. A first in a new series, great... but I’m not sure a series of what, and I am predisposed to believe that it is of, in a broad sense of Scottish genealogy research. And let me assure you, this is exactly what I need.

Immediately and into the first few paragraphs I have learned that at a point in time “it was, for example, actually enough for two people to simply declare themselves as marrying in front of witnesses without a minister present.” And of course this throws some sort of monkey wrench into my research, assuming that there is no related documentation. Ah well… lesson learned.

Chris Paton’s article is a good and concise first part. I am definitely looking forward to his next installments in future issues of Tracing Family History.

Stay tuned for more thoughts and my own comments. I am always still learning.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent – Preparing A Document/Indenture For Transcription and Genealogy Research

13 March 2011

Greetings,

As you are well aware I have just finished the transcription of an Indenture from the Grenada Registers of Records of 31 pages in the search and research of the genealogy and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. I have posted four of the seven parts of that specific work and transcription. The next three parts are to follow.

The work, that is, the transcribing, at times, can be extremely tedious… and elicit the thought “why the hell am I spending all this time on this document that may not have anything to do with my ancestors?” Then again, it MAY just provide the one iota of a clue or hint that could lead to more information and facts about my relatives, especially ggg-grandfather James.

But this is only a part of the process and procedure. I thought I would fill you in to what I actually do to prep an old document, these Indentures that I have been transcribing.

There is a very good collection of the Grenada Registers of Records at the Family History Library available from Salt Lake City, Utah. The collection, titled “Land and Property” is made up of 33 16mm microfilms. The collection includes Indexes and Records spanning a time frame from 1764 through 1931.

My goal in my immediate project is to find and work with those records that may be related to the surname Smith. And as I am searching for any detail of my late ggg-grandfather James Smith who passed away in 1842, I have restricted myself to those records during a time frame from about 1773 through 1842. That is about 69 years of Smith-related documents. Not a small task.

Once I find a Smith-related Indenture, I download images of the pages of that document and save the images as jpg files. (Case in point, the last Indenture I worked on had 31 pages, therefore 31 images.) The capturing process takes place at a local Family History Center where I have the appropriate FHL microfilm on loan.

My next task is to work with each individual image. The first inserted image is an example of what the downloaded image may look like immediately after I first acquire the copy.

I next, using a photo touch up software, (I use FotoFinish), I will crop the image to eliminate the unnecessary parts of the copy. Once satisfied with the cropped image I will next work on the exposure of the image. This process helps me to reduce the extraneous “dirt” and “crud”, as well as the “bleed-through” from the back and other pages. Once I have a relatively good looking exposure-fixed and cropped image I will then use the “Auto Correct” function in my MS Office 2010 Picture Manager software.

The next image is a sample of one that I worked on. It is the “after” image to the above “before” one.

And at this point, I am now ready to start working on the transcribing of the actual document. Oh and by the way, I do NOT delete my original copy. I keep it just in case that I may need it to cross-reference it should I not be able to work with the complete image of my adjusted image.

Oh and by the way, the top image is a plate image, available in public domain, of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Enjoy,

Jim
