Part 929bg – GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer 1844 Death Registration

09 December 2018

Good Day,

Well, sometime in genealogy the hunt can take many different turns. This morning I discovered the 1844 Death Registration of GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer.

Rue Ste Blaise, Dornach
Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin, Alsace
France

All this time I was looking for a registration under the name of Brunhammer. Who knew that she was registered by her maiden name Ganzer? It is just one of things that, when doing genealogy research, one must expect to think outside the proverbial box.

GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer was the 1st of 3 wives of GGG-Grandfather Joseph Brunhammer. GG-Grandfather Jacques Brunhammer was, based on my research their eldest son, and the Brunhammer who left France and with his family came to the United States.

I noticed that her passing was reported on the 14th of November 1844 by GGG-Grandfather Joseph Brunhammer and her 27-year old brother and GGG-Granduncle Nicolas Ganzer. She had died at her home, on the evening before the 13th of November at 5:30 pm.

This information is also an update. Previously I reported GGG-Grandmother Catherine’s passing in October 1844. It is now updated to the 14th of November 1844.

The Brunhammer-Ganzer home was on Rue Ste. Blaise in Dornach, which is a part of Mulhouse in Haut-Rhin, Alsace.

Yes, I found above, on Google, a current day mapping of the street where the Brunhammers lived.

Here is an image copy of the 1844 Death Registration –

And if your eyes are better fine-tuned to reading the script, please note that this is my attempt. I would most welcome any other thoughts that would help to correct my mis-reads and/or omissions.

Here is an updated Brunhammer Ganzer Descendant Chart.

The search continues.  And I just keep on going.

If you have any comment, question, thought, idea please feel free to contact me via email at A Genealogy Hunt or jsmith58@gmail.com.

Part 623b – Brunhammer Genealogy – New and Updated Descendant Charts

14 January 2012

Good Day,

Following up with the discovery of the related information regarding Great-Grandaunt Lizzie Brunhammer (see Part 616b) I have updated the Brunhammer Descendant Chart. The Genealogy of the Brunhammer Family continues to grow.

This Descendant Chart is not only restricted to Andy’s Blood Line; the identified in individuals in blue and yellow. It also includes various Collateral Lines as those individuals; ancestors and connections, relate to him.

And as the information and data, the ancestors and the relative connections continue to grow, based on our search and research, I have found it necessary to split the whole Brunhammer Descendant Chart into three Parts: A, B, and C. These three Parts will be added to the Brunhammer drop-down menu at the top of each page on A Genealogy Hunt. I will also include a complete Brunhammer Descendant Chart but I must warn you that as the genealogy grows the complete one will become harder to read.

And the search and research continues.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 615b – Brunhammer Genealogy – New and Updated Descendant Chart

04 December 2011

Good Day,

Supper, not bad… actually quite good. Sous-vide pork loin chops spiced with garlic and herbs; mashed carrots mixed with olive oil and lemon; and roasted peppery spring potatoes accompanied with fig and mint yoghurt dip. Not bad… and I’m still experimenting. Really enjoy cooking with my Sous-Vide thing-a-ma-jig, even though it looks like an old-school doctor’s sterilizing unit.

And tonight I decided to work on the preliminary new and updated Brunhammer Descendant Chart.

This Descendant Chart pictures the Genealogy of the Brunhammer Family, especially Andy’s blood line. (All direct blood line individuals, albeit the ancestors are highlighted in blue-outline and yellow.)

As you can see there are a number of new additions, in red, to the humungous Chart. I will in time be splitting or dividing the Chart into associated Parts.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 136b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1841 Birth – GGGranduncle Henry Laurent Brunhammer

03 December 2009

Evening,

I’m on a roll right now. I’ve located the Table, Index, and Acte de Naissance for gg-granduncle Henry Laurent Brunhammer. He is the fourth child of ggg-grandparents Joseph and Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer. One major thing to note is the way the name is entered into the documents; not the surname but the forename. It is entered as both “Henry” and “Henri”. This is a new bit of learning for me… I always thought “Henry” with a “y” was the Anglicized version of the French “Henri” with an “i”. The issue is not what the name is entered in on the Registration Entry or the Acte de Naissance, but that all three entries; the Table, the Index; and the Acte were entered, I would presume by a Francophone.

The Table Décennales; the 10-Year Table’s entry reads – as transcribed:
Nom – Brunhammer
Prénom Naiʃsaience – Henri Laurent
Dates du actes – 15 Juillet 1841

Translation –
Name – Brunhammer
Birth name – Henri Laurent
Date of Acts – 15 July 1841

My source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732713].

The Index for summarizing the births for that year, 1841, found on microfilm FHL [732717] of the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin) follows. You’ll notice that there has been a change in the 1841 Index. The names of the parents are not included as they were in the 1835 and 1835 Indexes. The names were also not included in the 1837 Index.

My transcription –

And of course, I found the actual Acte de Naissance, the Birth entry to the 1841 Register. My source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732717].

And here I go with the transcription –

15 July 1841
In the year 1841, the 15th of the month of July at 8:00 o’clock in the evening, before us the undersigned Antoine Bauer, First Deputy, filling in for the Mayor by delegation dated the 29th of August, 1837, as officer of the civil state of the town of Dornach, in the Canton of Mulhouse, Department of Haut Rhin, appeared Joseph Brunhammer, foreman, 35 years old, residing in this city who presented to us a male child born today at 7:00 o’clock this morning in the house of Mr. _____ _____, _____ _____ _____ in this city, declaring him, and of Catherine Ganzer, stateless, 33 years old, and which he said he wanted to give the names of Henry Laurent. The presentation and what statement made in the presence of Nicolas Ganzer, wood engraver, twenty-four, and Louis Ignace Diehly, teacher, 21 years old, both domiciled in this city, and that the witnesses were _____ by the father of the child, and the father and witnesses signed with us the presentation of birth after reading and interpretation.
Brunhammer Ganzer _____ Baur

Three observations –
  1. This time the ggg-grandfather Joseph signed his name Brunhammer with two “ms”.
  2. Nicholas Ganzer could possibly be related to ggg-grandmother Catherine Ganzer, and
  3. GGG-Grandfather Joseph’s occupation is legible to read “contre-maitre” which by definition and translation is that of “foreman”. Foreman of what? That’s next to find out.
If you have any comments or questions please feel to do so at any time.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 135b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy - 1836 Birth - GGGranduncle Jean Brunhammer

02 December 2009

Afternoon,

In my gathering of documentary evidence in my research of the genealogy of the Brunhammer Family, the next name on the Tables Décennales, the 10-Year Table, is that of gg-granduncle Jean Brunhammer. Per the 10-Year Table the date of the Acte de Naissance, the Birth Certificate is 13 May 1836.

My source and discovery is the same page of the 10-Year Table as that noted in Parts 133b and 134b. That page listed the 1837 and 1835 Birth Registrations for gg-grandfather Jacques and gg-grandaunt Catherine, respectively. The source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732713].

Transcribed –
Nom – Brunhammer
Prénom Naiʃsaience – Jean
Dates du actes – 13 mai 1836

And amongst my files I have been able to find an Index specific to gg-granduncle Jean’s birth registration. Source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732717].

Nature of Birth –

The Acte de Naissance, Birth Certificate, aka registration was located. The following is a clipping from the page of the Civil Register. My source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732717].

In the year 1836, the 13th of May at 6 o’clock in the evening, before us Antoine Baur undersigned, Mayor and Officer of Vital Statistics of the Municipality Dornach District of Mulhouse, Haut Rhin Department, testified Joseph Brunhammer, _____ master?, 32 years old, residing in this City where we introduced a female child born yesterday the 12th of this month at 7 o’clock in the evening, in the house of Christian _____ _____ behind the village in the Commune of him saying and of Catherine Ganzer his wife, his wife, laundress, aged 27 years, living in this City, and _____ he said he wanted to give the name of Jean, the said statement and presentation made in the presence of Mara _____ _____ 40 years old, and Antoine Flarÿ, journalist, 33 years old, and the father and witnesses signed with us, the act of birth after he ______ _____ has been done and interpretation.
Brunhamer _____ Flarÿ Baur

And of course two things come immediately to note. The registration indicates a “female child”, “sexe féminine” versus a male child “sexe masculine”. This would not be something to highlight except the name “Jean” is a masculine name, or translated “John”, whereas the feminine name would be written as “Jeanne”, literally translated as Jean.

The second note that I need to point out is the actual spelling of the last name Brunhammer. It appears that the surname is spelled, dependent upon the scribe or clerk who is writing the registration, index, document, etc.. You should note that it written as both Brunhammer and Brunhamer; one “m” versus two “mm”. I would to point out that in any of my future posts I will transcribe the surname Brunhammer, or Brunhamer, as I can make it out on a specific document. Any argument as to the correct way of spelling it may be beyond the limitations of my puny brain.

Enjoy,

Part 134b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1835 Birth GGGrandaunt Catherine Brunhammer

01 December 2009

Evening,

And on the Table Décennales, the 10-Year Table, as I mentioned in Part 133b the name Catherine Brunhammer stands out. The source was the Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin), microfilm FHL [732713].

This is Andy’s gg-grandaunt Catherine, his gg-grandfather Jacques (aka Jacob) Brunhammer’s elder sister.

Part 133b – Brunhammer Doherty Genealogy – 1837 Birth Jacques (Jacob) Brunhammer

29 November 2009

Afternoon,

DMC Mulhouse-Dornach 1874; Histoire de D.M.C.

Based on all the information that we have gathered to date, we can almost step out and state that we think that the genealogy of every Brunhammer and Brunhamer in the United States is linked to Jacques (aka Jacob) Brunhammer.

And as there appears to be no available documentary proof, we have deduced that gg-grandfather Jacques (aka Jacob) Brunhammer immigrated to the United States sometime during the last four months of 1875… We definitely know that the rest of the family, his wife, gg-grandmother Marie and six of his children arrived in Pennsylvania on the 17th of May 1876, as outlined in Part 92b.

GG-grandfather Jacques, using the name Jacob, became an American citizen in 1883. See Part 96b.

For more information of the Brunhammer Family, see Parts 93b and 95b. This is by no mean the totality of the Brunhammer ancestry and genealogy… it is only a beginning.

What of his earlier life? What of his birth and boyhood? Where exactly in France was he from?

As far as we can tell from the documentation and data that we have discovered, gg-grandfather Jacques Brunhammer was born the 22nd of October, 1837. We have been able to locate three sources of information.

The first is Le Table Décennales or the 10-Year Table. This was discovered on the microfilm FHL[732713], Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Tables décennales - Naissances 1823-1853; Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin).

In this case the month written as “8eme” is literally translated as the 8th. But the 8th month is October from the old Roman calendar, from the Latin “octo” meaning “eight”. It does not represent August, which in the majority of French documents is spelled out as “aout.”

The next page is the Index Page from the microfilm FHL[732717], Registres de l’état civil, 1793-1882, Tables décennales - Naissances 1823-1853 ; Officier de l’état civil, Dornach (Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin.)

As there are a number of blanks in my transcription I have not attempted any translation. I would like to challenge any one reading this Post, especially Brunhammers, to attempt a chance at transcribing that which I seem not to be able to read. My visual acuity could change when I get my new glasses next week... Maybe?

I can extract the following from the actual Acte: Jacques Brunhamer was born the 22nd of October, 1837 in Dornach in the Canton of Mulhouse and Department of Haut Rhin. He was born to Joseph Brunhamer, who was 31 years old, and to Catherine Ganzer, his wife who was 28 years old. The registration of birth was presented by a midwife named Françoise, and I can’t make out her last name. From that point I am having a bit of difficulty trying to make out the remainder of information. Please send your thoughts and ideas by either commenting to this Posting or to me by email.

And of course, if you noticed on the Table Décennales, the 10-Year Table above, there are three more Brunhammers listed: Henri Laurent, Jean, and Catherine. Stay-tuned and find out if they are related.

Enjoy,

Jim

27 October 2009

Afternoon,

As I mentioned I have split the Brunhammer descendant line into two Charts: I and II.

Chart I (Part 93b) begins with Andy and follows his paternal blood line through Chart II.

The lineage is as follows:

Andy

GGGGGG-Grandfather – Joannes Conradus Bruhamer; b.c.1704,? ; d.1776, Bad Säckingen, France

As you can see the surname Brunhammer is represented in a number of different ways and spellings. To date, and dependent upon the source and sources, we have found the following iterations: Brunhammer, Bruhammer, Brunhamer, Bruhamer, and even Preenharness.

Please note that as always, this family history search and research project is always under construction. Data and input can and may change based on the availability and source of documentation and information. Part 93b – Spotlights and Brunhammer Descendant Chart I

25 October 2009

Last night when I was walking, actually I was hobbling, the dogs, Bella started barking at the night sky. She sometimes barks at birds and planes, as they fly overhead. I’m not really sure what’s in her mind at times, but I think she thinks that she can actually catch something. Well it was dark, and she kept barking. That’s when I saw them. Not birds. Not a plane… but four white circles, skipping around in the evening sky. It was the tracing of some spotlights. Spotlights from the high school a couple of miles away… and a prom or dance I think; it was about midnight. Crazy dog… Ferocious 11-pound canine, chasing spotlights.

Well I began working on a Brunhammer Descendant Chart in GenoPro. It’s one of the genealogy softwares that I use, and it is software that allows me a bit more freedom of a visual perspective and less of a mechanical constriction. I use a number of other genealogical programs dependent upon the types of attributes and features that I want to highlight and work with. When you pick or are looking for a program, think about what it is that you would like to accomplish. There are many ones now available, and if you need any assistance please feel free to get in touch with me.

In this case, and as there are many generations of Brunhammers, and I really do not want to compel you to go blind, I am creating two Brunhammer Descendant Charts. Brunhammer Descendant Chart – I begins with great-great-great grandfather Joseph Brunhammer and flows down to Andy. Please note that I will NOT be providing any information on these charts, or in this Blog, about any living person. Andy’s name, by his permission, will be the only name that may appear simply as a point and person of reference.

The yellow and blue symbols represent Andy's direct blood line. All information on this Descendant Chart is based on current and available information. It may change as new and more correct data is discovered. New and updated data may be entered in red.

Key - The added letters and numbers to the right of a name in the Descendant Chart, for example, I-P92b, can be used to locate an image of the document as it appears in the Blog - http://jklsmith.blogspot.com; B = Birth; C = Baptism/Christening; M = Marriage; D = Death or Burial; W = Will; I = Item of Interest; 85b = Part 85b. The small letter “b” represents a surname; in this example b = Brunhammer.

Please know that these descendant charts are always a work in progress. Additions, changes, corrections, upgrades, etc., may be made from time to time. If you have any question or comment please feel free to email me.

The next descendant chart, Brunhammer Descendant Chart II will continue back in time, by generations from ggg-grandfather Joseph Brunhammer. It is currently under construction. Stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim
