Part 882sr – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Haplogroup R-CTS7822

Good Day,

Family Tree DNA has confirmed that my Y-DNA Haplogroup is R-CTS7822.  My Y-DNA Haplotree was created in partnership with The Genographic Project.



The following SNPs have shown up as positive: M207+; M173+; P25+; M343+; Z2105+; Z2103+; M269+;  L150+; L23+; and CTS7822+.

And these SNPs are indicated as negative: YSC0000072-; U198-; U152-; U106-; SRY2627-; P66-; P107-; M73-; M65-; M37-; M222-; M18-; M160-; M153-; M126-; L51-; L151-; and F2863-.

In the above Haplotree diagram I have highlighted the positive SNPs in yellow and the negative SNPs in buff.

This is my bloodline descent from three-times great grandfather James Smith of Grenada...(not Granada.) If you are a male descended from my ggg-grandfather James you too should find that your Y-DNA results would be considered the same.

I am still attempting to search and research the origins of James Smith.  As I learn I will try to divulge.

Part 537rs - Smith Robertson Genealogy – Updated DNA Haplogroup Ascendancy Chart

Good Morning,

And a very wet good morning… without air-conditioning good morning to all. The positive thing is that it is overcast and should remain this way all day, and so I cannot complain… much.


With the release of the new Deep Clade results of our Robertson Y-DNA, I have updated the Smith YDNA and mtDNA Ascendancy Chart.

Please note that the close results between the Smith and the Robertson YDNA Haplogroup classifications. Interesting, if I say so myself.

Part 536r – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Robertson Deep Clade Tests Results Returned – R1b1a2a1a1a*

Good Afternoon,

The next set of the Robertson Y-DNA Deep Clade Tests results have been returned. Following up with Part 482r our Robertson Y-DNA, (thank you GR), Haplogroup was predicted at R1b1a2. At that point the Robertson shorthand classification was M-269 marker.

As of today a portion of the Deep Clade Testing has been completed testing for the U-106 marker which has tested and confirmed positive. What this means is that the eight subclades or branches above the U-106 are presumed positive. Those eight branches are: L23; L150; L51; L11; L151; L52; P310; and P311. The P312 test is confirmed negative. This means that the new confirmed Robertson Haplogroup is R1b1a2a1a1a*.

I have included an attempted cut and pasted image of the Family Tree DNA Y-Haplogroup for our Robertson Line.



Now we have to wait for some more Deep Clade Test results, actually 8 of 9 more. One, L48 has returned as negative, which means that, based on the results our Robertson Haplogroup Subclade is not included in the R1b1a2a1a1a4* series. The other eight will determine, whether they are positive or negative which will indicate what a deeper Robertson branch may be.

The following are a couple of terms with Family Tree DNA definitions that may help.

Deep Clade – A Y-DNA Deepclade test is a test for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that determine a male's place (branch) on the ancestral tree for all mankind. Deepclade testing offers in-depth information about the ancient ancestry and historic migrations of your direct paternal line.

Haplogroup – Y-chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) haplogroups are the major branches on the human paternal family tree. Each haplogroup has many sub-branches.

Subclade – A sub-branch of a haplogroup.

Haplogroups and their subclades (branches) mark human migrations.

Marker – Also SNP or single nucleotide polymorphism. Some Y-DNA sub-branch markers, SNPs, are restricted to a single family that is related in genealogical times (1 to 15 generations).

We now sit and wait for the additional results of the eight remaining Deepclade tests.

Part 483s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith YDNA Confirmed Haplogroup Updated

Almost Afternoon,

Last night when I checked my Family Tree DNA account I discovered that my Smith YDNA Haplogroup had been updated. The Smith YDNA confirmed Haplogroup is R1b1a2a.


Previously it had been reported predicted as R1b1b2a. It is now, based on the most up-to-date testing, R1b1a2a. The “drilling-down” just keeps getting more and more exact.

I use the term “drill-down”, which of course I am not the author, because it helps me to understand that I have to keep examining genealogy and genetic data and information at a deeper level. Wikipedia gives a summary definition.

In information technology, to drill down means to move from summary information to detailed data by focusing in on something. In a GUI-environment, "drilling-down" may involve clicking on some representation in order to reveal more detail.

And from IBM WebSphere Dashboard Framework Glossary to drill down is -

The action of navigating from higher-level data or dashboard visualizations to more specific information in a hierarchical structure.

And that is what is happening in the search and pinpointing of my Smith ancestral origins. It is sort of what I do in my document research trying to discover the origins of ggg-grandfather James Smith.



In the above Y-Haplotree images the green codes are confirmed Haplogroup tests. It means that my YDNA tested positive at these levels. The red codes in the drill-down are where I tested negative. The orange code, specifically [L150 !] means that tests are available and in my case they are being conducted. The next two images provide, diagrammatically, those subgroups of my Haplogroup of which I do not belong. It is a process of elimination… Didn’t I say that genealogy is an exercise in elimination?

In the top image, at the bottom, is my Haplogroup Info. It present my Haplogroup coding of R1b1a2a and what appears to be a formula called “Tests”. The formula, at this point is

P25+ M343+ M269+ M207+ M173+ L49+ L23+ U198- U152- U106- SRY2627- P66- P312- P311- P310- P107- M73- M65- M37- M222- M18- M160- M153- M126- L51- L151- L11-

It is the combination of tests results that produce my Haplogroup. Each code is followed by a “+” or “-“. The “+” means that I tested positive. A “-“ means that the test result is negative.

And so I continue. The pending results for the “Family Finder” and “Walk Through the Y” tests are expected April 4 and 20, respectively.

Part 464rs – Smith Robertson Genealogy – New Robertson YDNA Results

Good Day…

The next set of results of the Robertson YDNA, Panels 2 and 3, that is, Locus/Markers 13 through 25, and 26 through 37 have been returned from Family Tree DNA. Each Locus is “a specific spot in the genome.” At each Locus, Family Tree DNA provides a test result of each DYS# and specific Allele value.


FTDNA explains that an Allele is “one of the different forms of a gene that can exist at a single locus. Since mutations in the allele value occur very slowly with time, one should see the same allele value for a male and his great-grandfather for example.

Thanks to G we now have the beginnings of the results of the first 37 Loci or Markers of the Robertson branch of our genealogy and Family Tree.

Also, at this point of the new results we can see the prediction of the Robertson Haplogroup. The haplogroups are the major branches on the Y chromosome tree, defined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which have accumulated along different lineages as Y chromosomes are passed from father to son over many generations.

Presently there are 20 YDNA Haplogroups, primarily labeled A through and including T. Our Robertson Haplogroup is now predicted at R1b1b2. As this is for the short time a prediction, we will have a complete end result once the additional 38 through 67 Loci tests results have returned.
