Part 521s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1799 James Smith – Pointe Saline & Morne Rouge Plantations

Good Afternoon,

This morning a quick breakfast of eggs in a nest of spinach and scallions, topped with parmesan cheese, and sprinkled with chili vinegar. And a good afternoon to you. It’s is a wonder when you look in the refrigerator and think “Maybe, I have a craving for that…”

The work on my Transcription Project continues in the search of the origins and genealogy of ggg-grandfather James Smith. And this time there is a James Smith included in this 19 October 1798 Indenture entered the 5th of June 1799 to the Grenada Registers of Records.

There is no information nor any details provided for this James Smith. It appears that in conjunction with a R. Blood, he, James Smith was witness to the Indenture as written. The Contract appears to be an Indenture of Lease and Sale of two Plantations or Estates; Pointe Saline and Morne Rouge. The contractual considerations appear to be a grand sum of five shillings and one pepper corn between the Campbells and Edmund Thornton. (What ever happened to the dealing in single grains of Indian corn?)

The above inserted map is of 1801 Grenada “taken from an actual Survey made by Gavin Smith...” I have superimposed a red circle to approximate the locations of the Pointe Saline and Morne Rouge Plantations or Estates. (Thank you Steve for the copy of the map… As you can see I am able to refer to it in many occasions. Pretty slick, MA?)

This Indenture made the nineteenth day of October in the thirty
eighth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God
of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth
And in the Year of our Lord One thousand and seven hundred and ninety eight
Between Edmund Thornton of Finsbury Square in the County of
Middlesex Esquire of the one part and John Campbell the Elder
Alexander Campbell and Alexander Campbell the younger
of the City of Glasgow Merchants and Partners carrying on Trade in Copartnership
under the Firm of John Campbell Senior and Company of the other Part
Witne∫seth that for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings of lawful
Money of Great Britain to him the said Edmund Thornton in hand well and
truly paid by the said John Campbell the Elder Alexander Campbell and
Alexander Campbell the Younger at or before the sealing and delivery of these
Presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged He the said Edmund Thornton
Hath bargained and sold and by these Presents Doth bargain and sell unto

Campbell the younger their Executors Administrators and A∫signs All that
Cotton Plantation or Estate of him the said Edmund Thornton called Pointe
Saline situate and being in the Parish of Saint George in the Island of
Grenada containing by estimation three hundred and thirty acres of Land
or thereabouts be the same more or le∫s bounded on the East by lands now or
late belonging to the heirs of Charles Clarmont Esquire deceased and on the North
South and West sides thereof by the Kings fifty paces next the Sea or howsoever
otherwise the said Plantation or estate is situated or bounded And also all
and every those One hundred and fifty nine Negro and other Slaves of him the said
Edmund Thornton now being upon or belonging to the said Plantation or Estate
whose Names are particularly mentioned and set forth in the list marked A
in the Schedule hereunder written indorsed or such of them as are now
living and all the progeny Offspring I∫sue and Increase of the females of the said
Slaves And also all that other Cotton Plantation or Estate of him the said
Edmund Thornton called Morne Rouge Situate and being in the said
Parish of Saint George in the said Island of Grenada containing by estimation
One hundred and forty Acres of Land or thereabouts be the same more or levs
bounded on the East by Lands now or late belonging to the Heirs of Robert Young
Esquire deceased on the South partly by lands now or late of Joseph Dert and
particularly by Lands of Culais Flavigny (a free Mulatto) on the West by lands
now or late belonging to the said Heirs of the said Charles Clarmont deceased and
on the north by the Kings fifty paces next the Sea or howsoever otherwise the said
last mentioned Plantation or Estate is situated or bounded And also all
and every those One hundred and sixteen Negro and other Slaves of him the said
Edmund Thornton now being upon or belonging to the said last mentioned
plantation or estate whose names are particularly mentioned and set forth in
the list marked B in the said Schedule hereunder written or hereon indorsed
or such of them as are now living and the progeny Offspring I∫sue and Increase
of the females of the said last mentioned Slaves And also all other Negroes now
living on or belonging to the said Estate or either of them And also all
and singular Me∫suages Edifices Erections and Buildings whatsoever erected

called Pointe Saline and Morne Rouge or either of them or any
part thereof respectively or thereto or to either of them or any part of parcel thereof
respectively belonging or appertaining And also all Trees Woods Underwoods
Ways Paths Pa∫sages Water Watercourses Easements Emoluments Privileges
Hereditaments and Appurtenances to the said Plantations or Estates or
either of them or any part thereof respectively belonging or in any wise
appertaining or accepted reputed taken or known as Part parcel or member
thereof respectively And also all Horses A∫ses Mules Horned and other
Cattle whatsoever Mills Cisterns Utensils and Implements whatsoever to
the said Plantations or Estates or either of them or any part thereof respectively
belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion and reversions
remainder and remainders yearly and other Rents i∫sues and Profits thereof
are of every part and parcel thereof To have and to hold the said two
Plantations Lands Me∫suages Tenements Slaves Buildings Stock and Premises
hereby bargained and sold or mentioned or intended so to be with their and
every of their Appurtenances unto the said John Campbell the elder Alexander
Campbell and alexander Campbell the younger their Executors Administrators
and A∫signs from the day next before the day of the date of these Presents for and
during and unto the full end and term of One whole Year from thence next
ensuing and fully to be complete and ended Yielding and Paying
for the same unto the said Edmund Thornton his Heirs or A∫signs the rent of
One Pepper Corn only on the last day of the said term if the same shall be lawfully
demanded To the intent and purpose that by virtue of these Presents and by
force of the statute made for transferring uses into po∫se∫sion the said John
Campbell the elder Alexander Campbell and Alexander Campbell the younger
may be in the actual po∫se∫sion of the said Premises hereby bargained and sold
and may be thereby enabled to accept and take a Grant and Release of the reversion
