Part 956ss - Am I Related to Sir Walter Scott?

Good Morning,

Yesterday I spent my research time, hoping that I may “stumble” across a connection and to source, what some people have in their online family trees, to Sir Walter Scott.

Not sure whether I did.

Sir Walter Scott was born in the Edinburgh area in 1771. He became a lawyer and a famous writer.

GGG-Granduncle Cumberland Reid Scott, GGG-Grandfather Alexander Reid Scott’s younger brother was born in 1805. He was born in the Edinburgh area.

GGG-Granduncle Cumberland was noted as a writer. In the 1830s an Act was passed in Jamaica appointing him as a lawyer.

GGG-Granduncle Cumberland had 2 wives: Isabella Ferme in Edinburgh and Elizabeth Dunn in Jamaica. At this point I have not determined whether Isabella passed away or whether she was separated from Cumberland.

One of his 2 sons with Isabella, George survived infancy. The 3 children he had with Elizabeth all died in infancy.

I was able to follow George and his marriage to Jane Graham. Together they had 6 children, all 2nd cousins. Two passed away in infancy. The other 4 all reached adulthood; all of them passed away being single. I am not sure whether the 4 had any children.

This is the first time that I am really at a loss. I was hoping that I may be able to “find” a distant cousin of GGG-Granduncle Cumberland who may have had some information about a possible connection to Sir Walter Scott.

As GGG-Granduncle Cumberland Reid Scott is the 13th child of GGGG-Great-Grandparents James and Anne (née Reid) Scott, guess I’ll have to follow another Scott line.

Part 955sd – 1662 Marriage Registration – 8-Times Great-Grandparents James and Elspeth (née Dumbar) Scott

Good Day,

Today, as I follow my Scott Family line back in time, I have found the 1662 Marriage Registration for 8-times Great-Grandparents James and Elspeth (née Dumbar) Scott. They were married 24 September 1662, Julian calendar, in Colinton, Midlothian.

And now that I have move back in time, I realize that documentation may be halted due to the earliest dates of recording the Parish Records. According to The Phillimore Atlas & Index of Parish Registers by Cecil R. Humphery-Smith, 3rd Edition, 2003, here are some beginning dates as to when certain Parishes in Lothian and S.E. Lowlands, specific to my research may have started.

From The National Records of Scotland –

Regarding dates and the Julian versus Gregorian calendars -

“Change to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752. Scotland, along with England, Ireland and Wales, formally adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. This required a correction of 11 days and Parliament decided that Wednesday 2 September should be followed by Thursday 14 September with no intervening days numbered 3 to 13”

“There are two significant and separate developments that 
was the adoption of 1 January as the first day of the year affect dates in the Old Parish Registers (OPRs). The first instead of 25 March. The second was the calendar reform which began in 1582 when some European countries replaced the old-style Julian calendar with the new style Gregorian calendar. The latter was based on a more accurate calculation of the length of the year and required an adjustment of 10 days to align the calendar year with the solar year.” 

Stephen P. Morse has a Julian to Gregorian conversion application.

According to 8-times Great-Grandparents' the 1662 Marriage Registration was registered in Colinton Parish, Midlothian on the 27th September 1662, Julian Calendar.

I am not, even though I spent a good portion of my employment career as a banker, a student of pecuniary history. And of course, I had to look up information regarding the "Rix Dollars".

From Wikipedia and James Wood (1909), The Nuttall encyclopaedia. Frederick Warne, London, New York.

"Rixdollar is the English term for silver coinage used throughout the European continent."

Sounds like the Rix pattern of European coinage may have foretold of the current Euro.

And here is an updated Scott Family, in 2 images, showing the descendants from my 8-times Great-Grandparents James and Elspeth (née Dumbar) Scott through to my Great-Grandparents William James and Ella Margaret Louise (née Scott) Smith.

Part 954cs – 1675 Baptism Registration 7-Times Great-Grandmother Margret Crawford – Possibly?

Good Day,

Today I am presenting the 1675 Baptism Registration of Margret Crawford, daughter to John Crawford and Margret Scott. This Baptism Registration is extremely legible and provides succinct and detailed information. The Registration was created in the Parish of South Leith.

There is only one problem. At this juncture, I cannot guarantee with 100% certainly that this is 7-times Great-Grandmother Margret (née Crawford) Scott. I do not have any documentation that I can directly make the connection. The documents that I now have indicate a person or persons with the name of Margret/Margaret Crawford.

During the period of 1700 to 1709, 7-times Great-Grandparents David and Margret (née Crawford) Scott had, which I have accounted for, at least 6 children, including 6-times Great-Grandfather Patrick Scott. From what I can discern, at least 5 of the children where registered in the Parish of Duddingston.

All-things-being-equal, from the present Parish Church of South Leith to a central location in Duddingston it is just less than 3 miles away. The distance is about an hour walk.

I haven’t been able to find a documented source regarding 7-times Great-Grandparents David and Margret (née Crawford) Scott’s Marriage Registration. 5 of the 6 Baptism Registrations that I have found for their children do include the phrase “his spouse” immediately after Great-Grandmother Margret Crawford’s name, with reference to 7-times Great-Grandfather David Scott.

At this point in time, I can venture to say that it is a reasonable conclusion that this 1675 Baptism Registration may be that of 7-times Great-Grandmother Margret (née Crawford) Scott. And when more documentation is found, I will work with it at that time.

And, of course, it is extremely interesting and worth noting that the Margret Crawford’s mother listed in the Baptism Registration is that of one Margret Scott.

I certainly would appreciate your thoughts.

Part 953ss - 1674 Baptism Registration 7-Times Great-Grandfather David Scott

Good Day,

The Scott search continues.

To date I have gathered somewhere in the vicinity of 200 documents, give or take. And yes, the script at most times is relatively easy to transcribe. At other times...

I have chanced upon the 9 July 1674, (Julian calendar), Baptism Registration for 7-times Great-Grandfather David Scott.

The Baptism Registration also introduces 8-times Great-Grandparents James Scott and Elspeth Dunbar.  David Scott was, of the documentation that I have discovered to this point, the 8th of their 9 children.

Transcription -

9 July 1674

And now the research becomes a bit more cryptic as I move back in time.

From this Baptism Registration I am immediately attracted to three items of note.

First, all the surnames included in the Registration are all surnames that are specific to my collection of ancestors: Scott, Dunbar and Lawson.

Second, I believe I need to research the "John Scott of Baiglie". From a quick attempt, I have learned that there is a Baiglie in Perth. In Walter Scott's book "The Fair Maid of Perth or St. Valentine's Day", originally published 15 May 1828 there are a few references to the "Wicks of Baiglie". Coincidence?

And the third item is the occupation of "John Dunbar" as "Gloover". This is an occupation of interest, as in a previous discussion we thought that the word may be "Gloober".  In the above example the "v" in the word "Gloover" is written exactly the same as the "v" in the name "David".  According to ScotlandsPeople glossary a "Glover" is one who makes gloves. Any thoughts?

And as I always say and write, "the next document can always present something different, as well as a tittle bit more of information that you were not aware".
