Part 929bg – GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer 1844 Death Registration

Good Day,

Well, sometime in genealogy the hunt can take many different turns. This morning I discovered the 1844 Death Registration of GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer.

All this time I was looking for a registration under the name of Brunhammer. Who knew that she was registered by her maiden name Ganzer? It is just one of things that, when doing genealogy research, one must expect to think outside the proverbial box.

GGG-Grandmother Catherine (née Ganzer) Brunhammer was the 1st of 3 wives of GGG-Grandfather Joseph Brunhammer. GG-Grandfather Jacques Brunhammer was, based on my research their eldest son, and the Brunhammer who left France and with his family came to the United States.

I noticed that her passing was reported on the 14th of November 1844 by GGG-Grandfather Joseph Brunhammer and her 27-year old brother and GGG-Granduncle Nicolas Ganzer. She had died at her home, on the evening before the 13th of November at 5:30 pm.

This information is also an update. Previously I reported GGG-Grandmother Catherine’s passing in October 1844. It is now updated to the 14th of November 1844.

The Brunhammer-Ganzer home was on Rue Ste. Blaise in Dornach, which is a part of Mulhouse in Haut-Rhin, Alsace.

Yes, I found above, on Google, a current day mapping of the street where the Brunhammers lived.

Part 928bk - Updated Brunhammer Katz Descendant Tree Chart

Good Day,

As I mentioned I have linked into what I believe is the Katz Family line reaching back to 10-times Great-Grandparents Katz.

The information includes documentation and references to BMD registrations, especially in and around the towns of Durlach and Pforzheim in Baden, Germany.

Here is a created Brunhammer Katz Descendant Tree.

The Descendant Chart follows up to 10-times Great-Grandparents Conrad and Catharina Katz. Remember it was their 6-times Great-Daughter Marie (née Katz) Brunhammer who immigrated with her husband, Great-Great Grandfather Jacques (Jacob) to the United States.

The newly inserted/changed details in the Brunhammer Katz Descendant Tree have been added since my last update. The inserted and changed details are in red. I have also added many offspring and children to the main database.

Part 927ks – 1734 Birth Registration of 5-Times Great-Grandmother Maria Sophia (née Satzger) Katz

Well, I am certainly glad that there are more than one set of eyes reviewing this work.

I was able to find the 1734 Birth Registration of 5-times Great--Grandmother Maria Sophia (née Satzger) Katz in the Durlach directory. And the example of penmanship is certainly a positive reason for us to continue teaching cursive writing in schools today.

Fact –

1. 5-times Great-Grandmother Maria Sophia (née Satzger) Katz was christened on 25 November 1734 in Durlach, Bavaria.

2. Her parents are identified as 6-times Great-Grandfather Philipp Heinrich Satzger and 6-times Great-Grandmother Maria Elisabetha.

3. 6-times Great-Grandmother Maria Elisabetha’s surname does not appear to have been included in the Registration.

4. 6-times Great-Grandfather Philipp Heinrich Stazger’s occupation can be read as a “turner”. See Part 925ks at https://agenealogyhunt.blogspot.com/2018/11/part-925ks-1762-marriage-of-5-times.html

Clue –

5. The assumption is that 6-times Great-Grandparents Philipp Heinrich and Maria Elisabetha Satzger may have had other children.

Fact –

6. I was able to find 5 more Birth Registrations for 5 more children of 6-times Great-Grandparents Philipp Heinrich and Maria Elisabetha Satzger.

7. 6-times Great-Grandmother Maria Elisabetha’s name was included on the additional 5 Birth Registrations in various forms. These included Maria Anna and Anna Elisabetha. 6-times Great-Grandfather Philipp Heinrich’s name appears to be consistent on all the 5 other Birth Registrations.

8. 6-times Great-Grandmother Maria Anna Elisabetha’s surname was included on the other Birth Registration. It was either Hager or Hagerin.

Fact/Clue –

9. It appears that, unless there are other children born before 5-times Great-Grandmother Maria Sophia (née Stager) Katz, before 1734, she may have been the eldest child.

10. It may be possible that 6-times Great-Grandparents Philipp Heinrich and Maria Anna Elisabetha (née Hager) Satzger may have been married sometime in the early 1730s.

Part 925ks – 1762 Marriage of 5-Times Great-Grandparents Johann Friedrich and Maria Sophia (née Satzger) Katz

You know when a genealogist hoots and hollers when s/he believes s/he has found a possible critical document that fits right into a family tree.

And yes, that is what happened last night.

Even though a Family History film is denoted as completely indexed, one should not, not search through the digitized images to hunt for a document. Case in point this 1762 Katz/Satzger Marriage registration.

Here’s is what I found.

4. 5-times Great-Grandmother Maria Sophia’s father is listed as 6-time Great-Grandfather Philipp Heinrich Satzger.

5. Both 6-times Great-Grandfathers Johann Katz and Philipp Heinrich Satzger are entered of having passed away before the date of 15 June 1762.

6. 5-times Great-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz was born on 24 Mar 1763, 9 months and 1 week after his parents, 6-times Great Grandfather Johann and Maria Sophia (née Satzger) Katz were married.

Part 924bk - 1763 Birth and Baptism of GGGG-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz

Good Day,

Just some quick notes – “GGGG” and “GGGGG” are abbreviations of “4-times Great” and “5-times Great”. These Greats are being used with reference to Andy. You may have to add another 1 Great or 2 Greats to determine your relationship.

Well it looks like the sources and the documentation are just waiting to be found. All-things-being-equal it appears that we have been able to locate the Baptism and Birth Registration of GGGG-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz.

Here is the copy of the 26 March 1763 Baptism Registration. The source of the document is from the Evangelische Kirche Durlach (A. Durlach) Family History Library FHL 1238229.

The facts and the clues.

Fact –

GGGG-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz was born 24 March 1763 and baptized on the 26th in Durlach.

Fact -

His parents are listed as Johann Friedrich Katze and Sophie Satzgerin.

Fact/Clue –

Johann Friedrich Katze and Sophie Satzgerin are Andy’s 5-times Great-Grandparents.

Fact –

In Bavarian dialect surnames of women sometimes are formed by adding the ending "-in", used in standard High German to indicate noun variants for women or items of grammatical feminine gender. Therefore GGGGG-Grandmother Sophie’s surname could be read as Satzgerin or Satzger.

Fact –

Durlach was a town in what was considered Bavaria.

Fact –

4-times Great-Grandfather Johann Friedrich was named after his father, 5-times Great-Grandfather Johann Friedrich.

Fact/Clue –

In the right column there appears to have been added the date of GGGG-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz’s passing on 26 January 1819, at the age of 55 years.

Fact/Clue –

5-times Great-Grandfather Johann Friedrich’s status and occupation is entered as “local citizen and roper”

Thanks to Gert who assisted with the transcribing and the translation of the entry. I’m still struggling along with the recognizing of the script and the language.

Gert noted that there is a very strong coincidence and that there is a current restaurant with the name of "Judy's Pflug" in Karlsruhe-Durlach, see: https://judys-pflug.de/ . This may have been the same as to the which seems to be the former "Pflug", The Plow Inn as noted in the listing of the Godparents.

I've added GGGGG-Grandparents Johann Friedrich and Sophie (née Satzger) Katz to the Brunhammer Katz Descendant Tree.

Part 922bk – 1792 Marriage of GGGG-Grandparents Johann Friedrich KATZ and Eva Catharine KLEIBER

And the search continues. We are tracing back in time to see what we can find about the Brunhammer - Katz Family line.

As I mentioned and discovered in Part 921bk, GGG-Grandfather Ludwig, aka Louis, Adam Friedrick Katz's parents were (Fact/Clue #6) GGGG-Grandparents Frederick and Catharine (née Kleiber) Katz.

I have found the 1792 Marriage Registration of GGGG-Grandparents Frederick and Catherine (née Kleiber) Katz in the registers of the town of Durlach.

I was expecting more information on the Katz side of the family. The Registration does not provide GGGG-Grandfather Johann Friedrich Katz's parents. It does include GGGG-Grandmother Eva Catharine Kleiber's parents, GGGGG-Grandparents Johann Adam and Christine (née Scharmann) Kleiber's names. And that is 5-times Great!

Part 921bk – 1805 Baptism of GGG-Grandfather Ludwig (Louis) Adam Friedrich KATZ

I am now venturing into unknown and untapped areas of my genealogy research. Thank you to Lynn, John, Helmut, and Gert.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Part 920bk, there are several clues and notes that are obvious from the 1847 Death Registration of GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz.

Fact -

1. GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz was 41 years old when he passed away in 1847.

Clue -

2. Possible year of birth calculated at 1806.

Fact -

3. The death registration states that he was born in Durlach, Bavaria.

Fact -

4. Durlach, Baden, Germany is about a 38-hour walk, according to Google maps, north-north east from Soultz, Alsace, France.

Fact/Clue -

5. His surviving wife was listed as GGG-Grandmother Françoise (née Schaffhauser) Katz.

Fact/Clue -

6. His parents are/were GGGG-Frederick and Catherine (née Kleiber) Katz.

Searching online via Family Search I found the indexed information of the Birth Registration in Durlach, Baden, Germany dated “3 February 1805” for one “Ludwig Adam Friedrich Kaz”. His parents are listed as “Freidrich Kaz” and “Cathrina Kleinberin”

“Ludwig” I know is the German for the French “Louis”.

The indexed information is listed from the record collection “ Deutschland Gerbuten und Taufen, 1558-1898”, FHL #102550723 Image 13 of 784.

I found the record -

This is the information about GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz, who was your GG-Grandmother Marie (née Katz) Brunhammer's father. His name was Ludwig Adam Friedrich Katz. His parents, are 4-times Great-Grandparents Frederic and Catharine (née Kleiber) Katz. GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz was born in Durlach, Karlsruhe, Germany. He was baptized in 1805.

Part 920bk – 1847 Death of GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz

Sometimes I need a time of boredom and frustration to lay off my genealogy and the research. And sometimes it just takes a kick, and a few choice finds to put it back into gear, for some time.

On July 13, 2017 I posted “Part 902bk – Brunhammer Katz – Who was GG-Grandmother Marie (née Katz) Brunhammer’s Father?” on A Genealogy Hunt.

It was at this time that I discovered the 1847 death registration of Great-Great-Great-Grandfather Louis Katz. I wasn’t sure that Louis Katz was the father of Great-Great-Grandmother Marie (née Katz) Brunhammer. Today I am almost 100% certain, based on a series of documents and sources that I have been able to find and uncover.

The document was –

(I have only translated what I believe is the critical part of the Death Registration.)

From this document we can see and note several clues.

1. GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz was 41 years old when he passed away in 1847.
2. Possible year of birth calculated at 1806.
3. The death registration states that he was born in Durlach, Bavaria.
4. Durlach, Baden, Germany is about a 38-hour walk, according to Google maps, north north east from Soultz, Alsace, France.
5. His surviving wife was listed as GGG-Grandmother Françoise (née Schaffhauser) Katz.
6. His parents are/were GGGG-Frederick and Catherine (née Kleiber) Katz.

My research now moves to Durlach. I am now looking for a Birth Registration for GGG-Grandfather Louis Katz in and about 1806.

I just received news from Family Tree DNA that my Smith Y-DNA has another 111-Marker match. This time with a 9 Genetic Distance. The match is one John Faree Follis. This now makes that I have 8 relatively close 111 Y-DNA marker matches.

And the surnames of the individuals realizing the match are Fallis/Follis, Robinson, Seymour, and Ware. Not one Smith. 3 Fallis/Follis; 1 Robinson; 3 Seymour; and 1 Ware.

Does this mean that there is possibility that my Smith name may have been something else in a time long ago and faraway?

According to the Family Tree DNA Y-DNA TiP Report, and using the information of matching the latest John Faree Follis there may be a probability of 82.61% that in 12 generations, (that’s 12 generations backwards) we, John Faree Follis and myself, Jim Smith may have shared a common ancestor.

And how long is a generation?

From a male perspective it may be a “generational interval of 31 to 38 years”. (ISOGG, “How long is a generation? Science provides an answer”, by Donn Devine). 

If I use the average of about 34 ½ years my calculation would be that about 12 generations back or about 414 years in the past John Faree Follis and I may have an 82.61% chance of sharing a common male ancestor. That means that maybe around 1603 there may be a Follis who could have been a Smith or a Smith who could have been a Follis. (I think.)

And in our Y-DNA 111-marker matching, between John Faree Follis and me there is a 9 Genetic Distance, according to the tests as provided by Family Tree DNA.

The definition of Genetic Distance used by Family Tree DNA “is the number of differences, or mutations, between two sets of results. A genetic distance of zero means there are no differences in the results being compared against one another, i.e., an exact match.”

From my results I have noticed that there is one Jeffrey L. Smith and we match at the 37-Marker test of our Y-DNA. According to Family Tree DNA there is a probability of 89.16% that 12 generations back, about 1603, we may have shared a common ancestor. I wonder if Jeffery L. Smith has ever considering completing the 111-Marker test?

Currently and according to the FTDNA results there are 25 Smith matches at the 12-Marker testing and only two others, excluding myself have completed the 111-Marker testing. All-things-being-equal a possible matching to these two other Smiths falls away considerably as neither of them match my results at the 10 or less Genetic Difference.

Part 913bf – Brunhammer Fürst – 1818 GGGGG-Grandmother Anne Marie Bruhamer's Passing

Last night flipping through electronic pages of the digitized images of Baptism, Marriage, and Death registers I was able to find the Death Registration for GGGGG-(5-times)-Great-Grandmother Anne Marie (née Fürst) Bruhamer. She passed away at one of her son's home in Hochstatt, Haut-Rhin at 10:00 pm on the 25th of July 1818. The son who reported the passing was GGGG-(4-times)-Great-Grandfather Sébastien.

GGGGG-Great-Grandmother Anne Marie was 68 years old at the time of her death, as it was reported, and further, she was recorded as the widow of GGGGG-(5-times)-Great-Grandfather Conrad Bruhamer.

This is my attempt at transcribing the document. I am having a bit of a problem transcribing, reading, the actual name of the street of GGGG-Great-Grandfather Sébastien's home.

Part 912b – Brunhammer Plus – An Updated Brunhammer Genealogy Ancestry Chart

Good Day,

PC’s back in working order. It appeared that one of the voltage spikes that occurred during the wait for the electricity to come back on after the storm may have fried a couple of circuit boards.

I've been asked by a number of you if they could see my ancestry charting of the family tree. At times it can be somewhat confusing when one has to move through a number of pages on the PC screen or follow a distinct family line back in time.

I have re-created an ancestry chart using GenoPro. I like using GenoPro because it allows me to move persons, aka ancestors and descendants, around quick freely. I find it not as restrictive as some other software programs that are available.

"GenoPro makes it easy to build simple family trees, but it also allows you to easily and quickly build complex family trees. Not all families are simple."

I have now created a Brunhammer chart using GenoPro. Even beginning with Andy's parents, Eugene John and Myrtle Frances Gertrude (née Doherty) Brunhammer, I still have to recreate the Brunhammer family, going back to Andy's 8-times Great-Grandparents, using two visible images. And this work-chart is by no strength of the imagination complete.

The square boxes represent male ancestors and the circles, females. I have used a blue border with a yellow fill-in to represent Andy's bloodline. Andy's generation, as well as his nieces and nephews, and grand-nephews and grand-nieces are not included in either of the two images. I will not publically publish any information regarding any living relative.

Regarding his grand-nephews and grand-nieces, you can add 2 more levels of greats to a possibility of 10-Great-Grandparents.

Part 911b – Brunhammer – 1746 Birth Registration GGGGG-Great Grandfather Conrad Brunhammer

As I’m listening to the weather updates, and having prepared as best as I can, I need to keep preoccupied.

I was able to find the Baptism Registration of GGGGG-Great Grandfather Conrad Brunhammer and his seven other siblings; Andy’s 5-times Great-Grandaunts and Uncles. The Baptism Registration were all found in the parish records of Saint Fridolin Catholic Church in Säckingen (also Bad Säckingen) Baden, Germany.

I believe that this is building that may have housed the Saint Fridolin Catholic Church.

This is the entry of GGGGG-Grandfather Conradus Brunhammer.

Part 910bf – Bruhammer Fürst – 1776 Marriage Registration

Good Day,

In my search for the answer whether the two Marie Anne Schwimmers are related, at this time I have a feeling that they may not have been… But this can change if there is a distant past connection.

And the other issue that I have encountered is that the Church Marriage Registers for Hochstatt in Haut-Rhin between the years of about 1734 through 1753, mid-18th Century, do not appear to exist. This may or may not have been due to the constant turmoil resulting from the Reformation, the Thirty Years’ War, the French Revolution, and the constant conflicts regarding the lands and countries.

There is a positive note because of my search. I believe I have come across the Hochstatt Marriage Registration of GGGGG-Grandparents Conradus Bruhammer and Anna Maria Fürst. This is 6-times Great to Andy, and to some Brunhammer descendants 7-times Great and 8-times Great.

All-things-being-equal, and from what I can garner from the Marriage Register, GGGGG Conrad Bruhamer was from Sackingen. His parents, GGGGGG-Grandfather Conrad and GGGGGG-Grandmother Elisabeth (née Looserin) Bruhamer had passed away at the time of his marriage.

He married GGGGG-Grandmother Anna Marie Fürst. Her parents were GGGGGG-Grandparents Peter and Anna Marie (née Schoflerin) Fürst. I am not sure but from the details of the Latin one of them may have also passed away prior to the marriage. I am a bit confused as to exactly where they were from.

The marriage does take place in Hochstatt, in Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France.  It appears that the marriage did take place on the 10 June 1776. There may be references to certain requirements which were completed prior to the actual wedding.

And of course, this now opens the opportunity to search for a Birth Registration for GGGGG-Grandfather Conrad Bruhamer in Säckingen.

According to Google Maps, Hochstatt is approximately 63.3 kilometers, walking about 13 ¼ hours, from Säckingen.

Part 909bs – Brunhammer Schwimmer – The Search Continues

Good Day,

As a part of my search to discover whether or not Marie Anne Schwimmer (bc 1816) and Marie Anne Schwimmer (bc 1820) are related it is necessary for me to create a worksheet ancestry chart in order to verify all possible connections.

It is known that there are a number of Family Trees available in Internetland that exist without any source documentation or citation details. That is where I like to start. I use that information and then I search for the corroborating documents.

The following Brunhammer Schwimmer Family Tree is the beginning of that work.

For me, the best type of software I use for this type of exercise is GenoPro 2016. There is a freedom with this software that permits me to create a worksheet and to use it like an electronic "white board".

And here are a few notes and a key regarding understanding my work on the actual worksheet.

1. I have identified the 2 Marie Anne Schwimmers; each one married to GGG-Granduncle Laurent Brunhammer and Sébastien Brunhammer. See the blue box and the red arrows.

2. The red lines, not including the red arrows, are the coordinating links that I have found to date and they represent the Brunhammer connections.

3. The blue-bounded yellow-filled boxes and circles represent direct blood-line ancestors. The boxes represent Males and the Circles represent Females.

4. The "~" represents an approximate year.

5. The "<" represents the possibility of a date before the one given.

6. The ">" represents the possibility of a date after the one given.

7. The column of "Greats" on the left-hand side of the worksheet represents the level of the ancestor on the Brunhammer Family Tree and the relationship to Andy. In other words, "6-Greats" refers to Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather Conradi Bruhamer or 6-times Great-Grandfather Conradi Bruhamer.

Part 908bs – Brunhammer Schwimmer – 1851 Marriage Registration Sébastien Bruhammer and Marie Anne Schwimmer

The work in finding out whether Marie Anne Schwimmer is related to Marie Anne Schwimmer continues. Today I am working on the 1851 Marriage Registration of GGG-Granduncle Sébastien Brunhammer and Marie Schwimmer.

GGG-Granduncle Sébastien was 4-times Great-Grandfather Sébastien’s youngest son. He and GGGG-Grandmother Marguerite (née Ruess) had 3 sons; GGG-Grandfather Joseph, GGG-Granduncle Laurent and GGG-Granduncle Sébastien, that I am currently aware of. GGGG-Grandparents Sébastien and Marguerite (née Ruess) Brunhammer also had 4 daughters: GGG-Grandaunts Agnes, Therresse, Magdeline, and Marguerite. (I’ll be researching their families and descendants later.

Also, I should make a note here. It is concerning the surname Brunhammer. I have seen and come across various and sundry documents that have the name spelled in different ways. This just means, that by all accounts, all are correct. The surnames are Bruhamer, Bruhammer, Brunhammer, and Brunhamer. As you cross the generations you may see and know the surname in any of these spelling formats. None of them are incorrect. And any of them may apply to various branches of the family tree. In general, I will be referring to the surname as Brunhammer primarily as this is the format that I was first introduced to the name.

Now the youngest brother GGG-Granduncle Sébastien Brunhammer, who appears to be named after his father GGGG-Grandfather Sébastien did marry a wife whose name was also Marie Anne Schwimmer. This was the same as his older brother GGG-Granduncle Laurent. His wife was also Marie Anne Schwimmer.

And my quest is to find out whether the two Marie Anne Schwimmers were or were not related.

In Part 907bs – Brunhammer Schwimmer – 1842 Marriage Registration Laurent Bruhammer and Marie Anne Schwimmer we discovered that this Marie Anne Schwimmer was the daughter of Antoine Schwimmer and his late wife Marie Ann Schlienger. This Marie Anne Schwimmer was born in 1816.

And here is the first of two differences. The Marie Anne Schwimmer who married younger brother Sébastien Bruhammer was born in 1820.  Also her parents were Michel Schwimmer and Marie Anne Münch.

I have now found the 1851 Marriage Registration for GGG-Granduncle Sébastien Bruhammer and his wife Marie Anne Schwimmer. Here is my work from the Archives départementales du Haut-Rhin.

Part 907bs – Brunhammer Schwimmer – 1842 Marriage Registration Laurent Bruhammer and Marie Anne Schwimmer

In my effort to find out whether Marie Anne Schwimmer is related to Marie Anne Schwimmer I am working through the discovery, transcription, and translation of possibly relevant documents.

The following is the 31 December 1842 Civil Marriage Registration of 3-times Great-Granduncle Laurent Bruhammer and his wife Marie Anne Schwimmer which is based, I believe, on the required practices began on the 25th of September 1842.

1. Sunday, 25th September 1842, 11:00 am
2. Sunday, 2nd October 1842, 11:00 am
3. Wednesday, 5th October 1842, 8:00 am
4. Saturday, 31st October 1842, 5:00 pm

And based on my limited understanding I would gander to guess that 3-times Great-Granduncle Laurent Brunhammer and his new wife were married on 5 October 1842. The prior 2 dates may have been the posting of the bans and intention of marriage. The 31st of December may have been the closing of the books/registers for 1842.
