Part 243s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1831 James Smith

22 March 2010

Afternoon,

Continuing with the Transcription Project the next Record is one dated 10 May 1831 and entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 21 May 1831. The James Smith concerned, along with John Sly, are being assigned Power of Attorney by James Thomas, a Wine Merchant of London on behalf of the estate of his deceased, elder brother John Thomas.

The inserted image is of the Wine Vaults, at the London Docks, east of St. Katherine's Docks, and were constructed in 1805.

As the time frame between execution and entry of the Record is short it can be postulated that the actual assignment occurred in Grenada. It could be possibly ascertained that there is a greater probability that this may be ggg-grandfather James Smith. But, from the Document there is no further indication of ggg-grandfather James’ ancestry or genealogy.

The Record is pages 553 and 554 of the Grenada Registers of Records and the images are downloaded from Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563329].

My Tangent – Not Your Average Genealogy – The Voca People

21 March 2010

Afternoon,

The rain has me stuck to my PC. (Of course, if the sun was shining I probably would be just as stuck.) And I just needed something to liven my spirits while I trudge through the script of clerks long passed away… who really did not care about this Jim Smith, but who were just doing their jobs, albeit “human copy machines”. And this genealogy and ancestry search certainly at times needs a break.

Have you encountered The Voca People from the Planet Voca where they only communicate via music, sound, and songs? Well? (And this/they are "Humen Voices")

And now back to the Transcription Project.

Enjoy,

Part 242s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1829 Richard Oliver Smith

Again, good morning,

Weather report… Rain, sun, rain, sun, rain, sun. Take your pick.

My next transcription is a Record entered to the Grenada Register of Records, a Bill of Sale between Robert and Abigail Gentle and Richard Oliver Smith. My genealogy and ancestry radar immediately piqued. There may be a connection of sorts to the Smith family lines through to this Robert and Abigail Gentle. But sorry to say, there is no hint of blatant linking to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

The Record entered 20 December 1830 to the Registers is dated 15 December 1829 and I’ve downloaded the images from the microfilm FHL [1563329], Item 7.

The pages are 451 and 452:

orning,

No cat this morning, and I spent a sleepless night last night just transcribing.

First on my list of Records, a Bill of Sale between Cecille Smith and William Cockburn attorney to Richard Oliver Smith. The Bill of Sale is dated 1 December 1828 and was entered to the Grenada Register of Records 20 December 1830. There is no contained information that would connect either Smith to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

And the pages 450 and 451 from Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563329]:

Part 240s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1830 Joseph Smith

20 March 2010

Morning all,

That damn cat has been back again! This time the devil-feline dug up sprouting beans and peas. And I have to maintain some sort of level of composure, but its waning fast. I’ve got the spray and the pellets, and they are a waste of money, that didn’t work. The next, thanks Judith for the suggestion, is the chicken wire. And my next suggestion is a moat of fire.

And thanks to the Heritage Springs Genealogy Club for inviting me to speak at your monthly meeting. I was sure that my droning would have lulled everyone into an immediate and assured slumber. Your choice of topic “How to use what you find” certainly was a good one and I really hoped that my story-telling provided the necessary impetus to incite your genealogy search ideas. Thanks to every one for the great questions regarding the search of your family histories and ancestries.

Continuing with my Transcription Project I’ve stumbled upon a new Smith from the Grenada Register of Records. From Item 7 of the microfilm [1563329] the “new” Smith is one Joseph Smith.

The Document is a Manumission document and all-things-being-equal there is no immediate and obvious connection to my ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Here are the copies of pages 439 and 440:

My transcription and a quick point of note… At times there may be what appears to be a legitimate error; spelling, construction, or grammar in my transcription. I attempt to transcribe the content of the document exactly as it is written. And even though I was an English teacher, at one point of time in my career, I try to make sure that I do not make any corrections to the content of my transcription.

Part 239s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1830 Richard Oliver and Cecile Smith

19 March 2010

Morning,

And my transcription work continues. This morning the Record is very short, and it includes Richard Oliver and Cecile Smith. I’m not quite sure, from reading this brief Document how the two are related, but I can be sure that I do not read any direct cross-reference that there is a connection to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Last night my research involved examining Parish Records of Logie, County Perth in Scotland, as a follow up to my Blog Postings Parts 178s, 181s, and 191s. You can also see the beginnings of my analysis work of this Smith relationship in my Analysis Page titled “A Possible Smith Descendant Chart”.

I also began work researching the Smith surname in Caribbeana, Volume 1 as edited by Vere Langford Oliver, where I discovered a descendant chart and other writings pertaining to Richard Oliver Smith. These works were published in 1914. I will be presenting this research shortly.

The Record, pages 301 and 302 is extracted from the Grenada Registers of Records, 1817-1837 (v. R2-Z2) and downloaded from the microfilm FHL [1563329].

Here are the pages 301 and 302:

Morning,

The pollen count is increasing. Bless you. And I carry a box of Kleenex with Aloe & Vitamin E & Lotion. Bless you. And I’m beginning to look like I’m auditioning for the part of Rudolf. Bless you. And I wipe the dogs and my hair down, after a walk with a damp paper towel. Bless you.

I’ve been pre-occupied with the creation of our new Blogsite, Quilts SB. Also we’ve been working on the re-creation of this Blogsite, soon to appear named – A Genealogy Hunt.

The next transcription was somewhat a strain on my blood-shot eyes. You’ll note there are many more blanks this time in the body of the document. (Another set of eyes certainly would be helpful.)

The Record appears to a Power of Attorney dated 18 February 1830 of Richard Oliver Smith. It is entered to the Grenada Registers of Records on the 25th of April of that same year. The name Smith is written 19 times in the body of the Document, and I could not find any valid cross-reference to ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Here are the pages 205 through and including 208 from Item 7 the microfilm FHL [1563329]:
