My Tangent – No More Ping-Pong

18 July 2010

Afternoon,
Hallelujah! I finally think I’ve eliminated the “ping-pong effect” from old to new blog. I have, fingers crossed, manually corrected all Postings links to when I began my Blog; that is, back to May 4, 2009.

All-things-being-equal you won’t be transported in Internetland to my old Blog – Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt. All links should be cross-referenced to any and all 437 Postings, thus far, at A Genealogy Hunt. Now wait and see, some 13-year old computer genius will email me and say that I could have done it this way and avoided all the manual effort. I’ll wait til s/he turns 53.

For your information the current URL, or Internet address for A Genealogy Hunt is http://agenealogyhunt.blogspot.com. You can set this URL as a Favorite or you can Subscribe by clicking on the Subscribe Tab at the top of the page under the Header and then select A Genealogy Hunt.

As of today the total number of Visitors to A Genealogy Hunt equals 5,046 and the number of Page Views totals 11,324. Visitors to Quilt SB totals 844 and Page Views equals 1,930. Top Listed.net has A Genealogy Hunt ranked currently as the number 2 Genealogy Site and Quilts SB has ranked in at number 4 of Quilting Sites. When you get a chance check our new Posting, Kanzashi.

If everything goes right in the next month, I hope to delete the old Blog, Genealogy, A Treasure Hunt from the Internet. As far as I can discern all records and Postings have been duplicated and transferred over to A Genealogy Hunt.

And thank you for your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to contact me via email or via a comment to the Blog if there appears to be something wrong with any link.

Enjoy,

Jim

My Tangent – Paper Mountains and Cheerios

17 July 2010

Morning,

I’m in a quandary. There are a number of things specific to my research that I have to do and I just seem to be sitting on a mound of paperwork. My immediate reaction is “humph”. The paperwork in my genealogy research and from the various projects seem to be overwhelming… but not overwhelming in a way that I can’t do or know what to do… but just where do I start. Have you ever had one of those days?

The Transcription Project of the Grenada Registers of Records is going very well. The next 1832 Record that I am working on involves gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour, his wife gg-grandaunt Sophia (née Smith), and ggg-grandfather James Smith. It is about 10 pages long. My issue is that my grey matter keeps trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

I’ve been collecting Actes de Naissances, (aka Birth Certificates) for my July, Merle, Collomière, and Dubuc lines from the Civil Registers of Bordeaux, France. I have reached to about 1807 so far. This Project leads me back to the late 1700s. Next the transcriptions and the translations. There is also a few thoughts ringing in the vast emptiness of my skull as to the search for the birth documentation of gg-grandfather Benjamin Victor Abraham.

The work on A Genealogy Hunt blog site and the imbedded links has progressed to 5 April 2010. I have to change each embedded link that refers back to a previous Posting. There is no automatic way to change the coding shy of doing it manually by editing each individual link. It is key that I finish this task in order to avoid the frustration of bouncing between the old blog site and the new.

Effort has been delayed on my website. I have many thoughts and considerations about it and what I need to get done but it is either age or my other self-imposed projects that keep me from getting to it.

Nine new microfilms arrived for me at the local Family History Center. I’ve got to get my new Access 2010 database going in order to develop my tracking system. This system helps me to get somewhat organized and avoid duplicating orders. You have to realize that I have become a microfilm junkie. There is so much information out there, and as it keeps on becoming available daily that there are times that one could think of being buried by an electronic avalanche. Many of those brick walls are falling down.

I know I attempt to work at this obsession of mine 24/7, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a 30/7 week. I think I’ll move to Mars… as long as the Internet and WiFi connections work.

And this is just about my genealogy. And each of the quadrupeds got their three Cheerios this morning. Now back to work…

Oh and by the way I’m working on a new line of Christmas quilts. Check out the latest additions at Quilts SB.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 320s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1832 Benjamin and Sophia (née) Smith Ventour

14 July 2010

Afternoon,

In my search for the origins or any hint of relationships of ggg-grandfather James Smith I was able to cross-reference the Indenture of Part 319s to the 31 December 1832 Slave Registers of former British Colonial Dependencies. This Document is available from The National Archives of the UK via Ancestry.co.uk. After a review I was able to discover a further corroboration. The information provided pertains to gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour husband to gg-grandaunt Sophia (née Smith) daughter of ggg-grandfather James Smith.

(Image: A Scholar by Rembrandt, 1631. Hermitage, St. Petersburg)

This document, albeit an accounting summary, indicates that Benjamin Ventour decreased his slave holdings “By Sale to O. Rowley Esq.” There is no mention in the accounting of the name James Smith within the body of the paperwork. My limited understanding of the legalities of contract law leaves me with the question “Why was ggg-grandfather James Smith included as one of the parties in the Indenture dated 27 October 1832?”

Here are the images, Pages 358, 359, and 360 of the Slave Registers.

And now to continue with the second part of the Indenture. All-things-being-equal there may be some clues as to both the inclusion of ggg-grandfather James Smith and of further possible ancestry and familial relationships.

My apologies for not perfectly lining up the columns of information in my transcriptions, but working with Google Blogger, HTML, and Word 2010 together sometimes can be a challenge.

And Lorna, thanks for the additional insight.

Part 319s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study – 1832 Benjamin and Sophia Ventour & James Smith

13 July 2010

Afternoon,

And at times there is success in the finding of genealogical information. In this case I have completed transcribing the first of two Indentures that include, I believe, three members of my family tree. They include ggg-grandfather James Smith; his daughter, gg-grandaunt Sophia (née Smith) and her husband, Benjamin Ventour.

This Indenture was entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 27 October 1832 and created the day before 26 October 1832. I’m not quite sure how the transaction involved each party but it appears that the sale contract is between Benjamin and Sophia Ventour and Owsley Rowley. Why ggg-grandfather James’ name is included, at this point, is beyond me?

The images are downloaded from Pages 289 through 290 are from Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]

Part 318s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study – 1832 James & Gavin Smith Mentioned Again

12 July 2010

Evening,

The Indenture Study continues, but the honorable scribe this time was extremely economical with his handwriting. My apologies but there may be many more lines that wrap automatically in my transcription work. No one said that ancestry or genealogy research would be a piece of cake; especially on my eyes.

This next Record is most definitely a second part to the Indenture entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 28 September 1832 and made 18 July 1832. It appears to be a completion of the transaction of property between one Rosette Overton and James Smith. (See Part 314s.)

Once again, I cannot be certain that this James Smith is my ggg-grandfather James but all-things-being-equal there may be a reasonable possibility that it is. The name of Gavin Smith, the Surveyor, is entered into the writing of the Indenture as it appears that his property is adjacent to the one in question.

In this Indenture the word “Appurtenances” is entered completely, excluding the hyphenated entries, four times. I had to finally look it up as it is a commonly used word in a good majority of the Indentures that I have been transcribing. From Wikipedia, “Appurtenance” legally “could for instance refer to a back-yard that goes with the adjoining house.” At Answers.com, the source of the above image, it is “A right, privilege, or property that is considered incident to the principal property for purposes such as passage of title, conveyance, or inheritance.”

This Record comprises Pages 275 through and including 277 and the images are downloaded from Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380].

Here are the images:

John Sanderson – Chief Justice

The next Indenture entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 27 October 1832 appears to be, all-things-being-equal, one of ggg-grandfather James Smith’s. My reasoning is that the other parties involved are Benjamin Ventour and his wife Sophia. Based on documentary proof, Benjamin Ventour was the son-in-law and his wife, Sophia was a daughter of ggg-grandfather James Smith.

Stay-tuned.

Enjoy,

Jim

Part 317o – Olton Genealogy – Some Research Aids

Afternoon,

Happy National Pecan Pie Day… I wonder if you get many pecan pies in Ontario, California, or Austria?

I thought I would pass on a couple of ideas regarding the search and research for Manfred Percival Olton. You can see a Time Line of his life listed under my Analyses tab below the header.

There is a limited preview of this book – Genealogies of Barbados Familes: From Caribbeana The Journal of Barbados Museum and Historical Society – online at Google Books . Some of the key Olton pages are missing from the online Google version.

The book is actually available through Amazon.com for $55.00. There are some used versions available from $44.50 to $217.55. plus shipping. There are also new versions offered for between $52.00 to $200.62 plus shipping. The Amazon deal appears to be the best deal.

There is a copy of the same book at the Toronto Public Library. There are also copies at the Sacramento Public Library and the Hillsborough County Public Library in Tampa.

World Vital Records has Genealogies of Barbados Families cross-referenced online at their website. The book has been indexed and there are 69 hits for the surname Olton. Main issue here, you may need to have a membership subscription.

Check out the following by Donald L. Hinson, Jr. – Barbados Family Research Reference Guide.

Another good source is The Monumental Inscriptions In The Churches And Churchyards Of The Island of Barbados, British West Indies by Vere Langford Oliver dated 1915 at Archive.org. There are seven Olton hits. He, Oliver, is also the author of the Caribbeana Volumes. In The Monumental Inscriptions there is a Samwel Perry Olton.

There are six Collections indexed and available at the new Family Search Beta site that all may relate to births, baptism, marriages, and deaths in Barbados.

Enjoy,

Jim
