Part 333s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1834 James and Archibald Smith - Carriacou

11 August 2010

Morning,

The research and search continues. My Transcription Project of Indentures from the Grenada Registers of Records has now moved to Item 7 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]. The Smiths involved in this Indenture are James and Archibald who at present I do not have any documentary proof that either gentleman is, or was, a part of my ancestry and genealogy.

The Indenture is a contract that is between the Smiths and their partner Robert McCunn and one, Pierre Aman Belfon regarding the Hermitage Estate, I believe in Carriacou, and its matters and contents. There is no definitive or immediate hint or clue of any connection to ggg-grandfather James.

(The inserted map of Carriacou is from the Department of Sustainable Development, Organization of American States.)

There may be some association with at least the Indentures I worked on in Part 264s and Part 265s.

Here are Pages 15, 16, and 17 including the mentioned Schedules A and B.

Part 332s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Smith Indenture Study Matrix Update

09 August 2010

Good Morning Again,

Yes here it is, a newly updated Smith Indenture Study Matrix for the microfilm FHL [1563380].

If you are new to reading A Genealogy Hunt, the purpose of the Matrix is to present a visual and consolidated summary of those Postings of transcriptions of Records associated with specific Smiths. This Matrix presents cross-references, by Part number to the associated Postings of the microfilm which is a copy of the Grenada Registers of Records, 1825-1834 (v. H5-O5).

To view the Matrix, click on the image and increase the viewing aspect per your viewing software or application. Please note that I have not segregated the Posting numbers by unique individuals only by unique names, as encountered in each Record.

I have only listed the singular Smith names. In other words, there may be more than one individual with the same name, for example, James Smith. I have only recorded those names as single entries if and only if there is a unique prefix or suffix added to the name. For example, James Smith and James Smith, Junior each are represented on separate, single lines of the Matrix. The listed Smith may or may not be the same individual but the transcribed Record(s) may not have any clues or hints as to that fact.

In order to see a specific Part, please enter the Part number, e.g. Part 289s, into the “Search This Blog” box. You can also see a copy of this Matrix by clicking the Analyses tab at the top of the page under the header and choosing the corresponding title on the pull-down menu.

I'm using SmartDraw to create the Matrix and hopefully, sometime soon, I hope to provide immediate links to relevant Posting as indicated within the Matrix .

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Part 331s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 Smith, Steele, and Ventour

Morning,

I’ve finally finished the last Smith-related transcription of Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]. This is an entry to the Grenada Registers of Records 1825-1834 (v.H5-O5).

As previously mentioned in my search for the origins and ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith I am transcribing all and any of the Records entered to the Grenada Registers that may have some reference to the surname Smith. GGG-grandfather James passed away in 1842 so I am trying to limit the range of this search to approximately a 60-year period. It is an arduous task and one hell of a lot of years and a lot of Documents. I am just hoping to find some hint or clue which may relate to the surname Smith and directly or indirectly to ggg-grandfather James.

The subject Record in this Posting references ggg-grandparents James and Mary Ann/e (née Doret) Smith; their daughter, gg-grandaunt Mary (née Smith Steele); and two of their sons-in-law, Benjamin Ventour and George Steele. There is also a distinct possibility that the final entered signature of the Document, Richard Steele, Assistant Justice could be that of gg-granduncle George Steele’s father. (Please note that none of the signatures or seals entered in the Registers is an original but of copies by the Clerk/Scribe who may have transcribed it from the original document.) The other persons included in the Record, from my immediate knowledge, who are not a part of my Smith family are gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour’s partner Ambrose Hayling, Rosette Overton, John Reynaert, Js Bruce, and Gavin Smith.

This Record, written 21 June 1833 and entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 7 October 1833, appears to involve the same transfer and/or purchase of property in the Town of Saint George as previously discussed. It also seems to be the workings and development of a Trust. See my previous Postings; Parts 329s, and 330s.

Here are the images of Pages 523 through and including 526.

And this is my transcription.

Part 330s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 Definitely More Smith Family

08 August 2010

Good morning again,

When it rains in Tampa, it pours… and I do not mean H2O. One never knows what priceless gem of information one may find in the search and research of one’s genealogy and family tree.

This next Indenture, written 21 June 1833 brings in and introduces more members of my Smith Family Tree. The Document found, and entered 7 October 1833 in the Grenada Registers of Records, first of all, concerns ggg-grandparents James and Mary Ann/e (née Doret) Smith and gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour and his partner Ambrose Hayling. This Record is a part of and follows the Indenture that I have just transcribed in Part 329s. This Record introduces the daughter of ggg-grandparents James and Mary Ann/e, gg-grandaunt Mary (née Smith) Steele and her husband George Steele.

Indicated within the Indenture includes reference to “a marriage had been lately had and solemnized…” between George Steele and gg-grandaunt Mary Smith. It explicitly states that she is the “daughter of the said James Smith”. Check out gg-grandaunt Mary Smith’s and George Steele’s 1832 Marriage Registration in Part 62s.

Here are the images of Pages 521, 522 and 523.

And I keep working. Maybe someday soon I will turn over a clue as to the origins and ancestry of ggg-grandfather James Smith. And as a further piece of information, note that concerning the property in question on of the borders lines up with land owned by Gavin Smith. From my understanding, Gavin Smith was the Surveyor who drafted and created the map that I reference to in Part 329s. Thank you Steve for sending me a copy of the map.

Part 329s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 GGG-Grandparents James and Mary Ann/e Smith, and GG-Granduncle Benjamin Ventour

Early Morning,

Persistence in genealogy sometimes pays off. And no I have not discovered the origins or ancestry of my ggg-grandfather James Smith, but I have just completed the transcription of an Indenture that includes the names of ggg-grandfather James, as well as ggg-grandmother Mary Anne (née Doret) Smith and gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour.

I believe this is a critical document in the events of my genealogy as it does indicate that ggg-grandmother Mary Anne is referred to ggg-grandfather James Smith’s wife. Also this is the second document and record in my library that includes the three; ggg-grandparents James and Mary Anne and gg-granduncle Benjamin Ventour together. The other document is the 11 December 1832 Marriage Registration of ggg-grandfather James Smith and ggg-grandmother Mary Ann Doret. GG-granduncle Benj. Ventour is included on the Registration as a witness to their marriage. (See Part 62s.)

As an aside, please note that ggg-grandmother’s name in this 20 June 1833 Indenture is entered both as Mary Ann and Mary Anne Smith. Her name in the 1832 Marriage Registration is entered as Mary Ann, without the “e”. In both, the Indenture and the Marriage Registration her “x” or “+” marks may indicate to us that she may have been unschooled in writing, and at this point in time we do not have any other definitive or exact spelling of her second name Ann/Anne.

This Indenture written and made 20 June 1833 and entered to the Grenada Registers of Records 7 October 1833 appears to be the exchange of property in the parish of Saint George between ggg-grandparents James and Mary Ann Smith and their son-in-law Benjamin Ventour and a partner, Ambrose Hayling. The inserted image of the Bing map of an aerial view of Saint George, in the highlighted yellow square with rounded corners, indicates the current and approximate location of property referred to in the Indenture.

The two pages of this Indenture; pages 520 and 521 are downloaded from Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]. Here are the two pages.

Here is my transcription. (And we have a different scribe, whose script is much easier on my tri-focals.

Part 328s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – Indenture Research – 1833 James and Archibald Smith, Again Once More

07 August 2010

Afternoon,

Just had a late morning thunderstorm. The humidity has increased. Temperature just dropped to 85˚F (29˚C) and the Heat Index to 93˚F (34˚C). Just found out that the Heat Index is measured in the shade. Earlier this week it was well over 100 degrees, Fahrenheit.

I’ve sort of been struggling with the Record that I’ve been transcribing this week in the continued search for the genealogy and ancestral origins of my ggg-grandfather James Smith. The next document from the Grenada Registers of Records exhibits extremely small and compacted writing, plus the ink has sort of smudged and blurred over since 1833.

The above-entered image is a clip, highlighting the location of the Union Estate, taken from the Map Of The Island of Grenada made by Gavin Smith in 1801.

The name Smith is repeated 60 times in this Record and the compounded name James Smith is repeated, at least 31 times. Not one of them refers to ggg-grandfather James.

The images, Pages 327 through and including 332, are downloaded from Item 6 of the microfilm FHL [1563380]. I believe that this Record is another Indenture of the former works in Part 325s and Part 326s.

Here are the images.

The lines of my transcription may not to wrap correctly on your monitor. I have placed a "hard-return" at the end of each line which should correspond to each complete line in the actual Documents. Here is my transcription.

Part 327s – Smith Robertson Genealogy – 1918 Marriage HL Smith & JLE Abraham

04 August 2010

A wonderful good morning… and a thank you very much to Bernard.

Via email from London and Sweden I received a very nice gift yesterday; the Marriage Announcement from the 5 April 1918 edition of The Daily Chronicle. It is the Marriage Announcement of my grandparents Hubert Lloyd and Jeanne Lucie Ernestine (née Abraham) Smith. Per the Announcement, they were married 3 April 1918 at the St. James-the-Less Anglican Church in Kitty, Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana).

From Zoë’s and Toni’s files we have had a copy of their 23 March 1918 marriage Licence.

And from a 2010 online copy of the Stabroek News, referencing a 30 June 2009 article in the Guyana Review I found images and a brief history of the St. James-the-Less Anglican Church.

It is amazing what can be found and how information can be communicated today online. This is the Internet.

Just think of what grandfather Hubert Lloyd could of imagined of his grandchildren's future when he went to work at the W.I. and P. Telegraph Company.

Thank you, Bernard, Toni, and Zoë.

Enjoy,

Jim
